re: #7 The Major (fka Eric The Fruit Bat)

I think DS9 is my favorite Star Trek series. The original and probably the first half of TNG were too episodic, like they were written for syndication. DS9 was the first to be serialized, and that made it so much more interesting. Sadly, the series that came after couldn’t quite work as well (Voyager had potential, but never found its footing; and Enterprise was hamstrung by the fact that it was a prequel and that terrible finale).

Plus, Quark might be the best character in the entire Star Trek universe.

Months back, we decided that we would try to go see more Broadway shows, and to support the arts.

We’ve seen, in no particular order, Waitress, Amelie, and An American in Paris, over the past few months. To that, we’ve added Natasha and Pierre and the Great Comet.

It. Was. Spectacular.

Visually it was spectacular. The lighting helps bring the show together and draw your eyes all around the theater. It’s a delight to watch.

Josh Groban has an amazing voice, and the rest of the cast aren’t slouches either. The show is immersive, where the cast performs throughout the theater so that performers are actually in and behind you in the balcony seats. They’re running all over the house, and for an old stage hand in my college days, it warms my heart to see this kind of wraparound set (there are seats in and behind the proscenium too). It’s theater in the round, as much of the action is in the front of the house.

Costumes are imaginative and weird (mixing punk/retro with 1800s Russian).

The story is basic, but it works.

I can see why the show got as many accolades as it did.

I believe in the Twitter comments someone posted the name of the company. You could contact them to see if they set up a fund or someone set it up for them.

Another way to help would be using their company over any other if you can.

re: #57 Charles Johnson

It’s an intentional framing. There’s no interest in reporting what is (in this case, for example, why those walk-outs did what they did, what they felt and thought)…the point is to maintain the narrative. This is what unifies the mildest “serious” conservative like David Brooks with the wack-est shithouse rat: the ongoing assertion that anything deemed “left” simply can be dismissed out of hand. (Which is why so many “serious conservatives” can be praised for writing thought-pieces that echo shit that liberals have been saying for years.)

Hippies. Ivory tower elitists. “New Yorkers.”

These are put-downs, but consider the largest semantic implications of why they are putdowns: an entire maleficarium of folk devils and witch-sign. This is what unites the right: a culture, a Tolkien-but-fucking-stupider synthetic folklore in which they’re always the good guys.

The loquacious pud-pullers that write thinkpieces about how any moment now an authentic, serious conservatism will appear and clear the board of all the nutters don’t realize they’re the cedar plank on the pile of burning garbage: they’re not resisting fuck all, they are part of the fire. Every “both sides” invocation drags the crazy fuckers into the fatter parts of the bell curve.

Thank you for that. I know of cases in Korea and Japan where corpses were either tried or dismembered and scattered to show the contempt authorities felt for antagonists to power.

The secret ingredient is that they don’t actually have any of the principles they invoke. They’re bullshitting about ethics as much as everything else; their one best strategy is to convince the world is that everybody else sucks just as much. Morality only exists imbedded inside a calculation of power and advantage.

Whenever they express moral outrage, you start looking for the card they’re palming.

When they accuse someone else of X, they’re either fist-deep in X or planning to be.

Even when they are pointing out an actual misdeed/wrong, it’s because they want leverage and compliance. As such, they’re never “on your side.”

Kind of funny how the emphasis is always on the Confederates, not any Southerner that didn’t want to secede. Or, you know, all the enslaved people that bravely tried to resist slavery, or escape, et cetera.

…and also the omission of all the shit required to keep the Antebellum South. Like the omnipresent privacy violation and on the books thoughtcrimes, the “heh, not really” civil liberties (of white people, just to be clear) and occasional extralegal murder because of the fear of abolitionism, the occasional black child kidnapping ring operating in the North.

My sophomores are doing presentations this month and next, and this slide popped up today during one team’s project, “Interesting Facts about America.” I had to talk to them afterward to address the inconsistencies and the doubtful source material.

So much wrong in one image

Well, some of the details are correct. There was a free black man named Anthony Johnson, who had been an indentured servant from Angola. He was alive in the late 1600s, had a tobacco farm, and did in fact have an indentured servant named John Casor. Casor took Johnson to court, arguing he was an indentured servant forced to work past his indenture. The court ruled in his favor, and he then went to work for another man. Johnson then sued Casor’s new employer, and the court ruled in Johnson’s favor, stating that Casor had violated the terms of his indenture and had to forfeit his freedom.
en.wikipedia.org

The trouble with the slide, apart from the fake history of Johnson being the “father of American slavery,” is the engraving (or photo — it’s hard to tell) accompanying it. Real historical website sites have no photos or images of Anthony Johnson, because in the late 1600s, there were certainly no cameras. The man in the image is dressed like someone from the mid-1800s, and is most certainly not Anthony Johnson.

I explained to the students that they need to check the reliability of their sources before citing them, and pointed out that in any event, there were no cameras in 1654. I’m also pretty sure that engraved portraits were not common at all during that time, except among the very rich.

recorded in colonial history), if Casor had been an actual “slave”, I.e. a human chattel, it would have been, in effect a property issue ( as it would be until the 1860s) .

It’s all about deflection, to deny white people had anything at all to do with slavery being an inherent part of Southern culture.

In addition, the time in question predates the founding of the nation by a century, so any legal issues arising in the colonial period would have little meaning once the USA became a separate country with its own legal system.

Mayor of New Orleans blew my mind tonight. This speech is absolutely amazing.

I knew Mitch when he was going to law school at Loyola in New Orleans. Not known by many, he was also a song and dance man, having majored in theater at Catholic University in DC. Great guy, with an excellent voice. He was in many performances during his time in law school.

Also met his sister, Mary. This was around 1984. Used to exercise her horse, Buttermilk, with my girlfriend at the time, who had her insane former thoroughbred, Red, stabled with Mary’s horse. Levees are fine exercise venues for horses. We grazed them in Audobon Park.

Many people (non-mountaineers) have gotten into their heads that nearly anyone can climb Everest (Qomolongmafeng 珠穆朗玛峰 as it is known in this part of the world), as long as they have a good guide and the right equipment. So, the number of people trying to climb the mountain has skyrocketed in the last decade, persuaded no doubt by tour operators and news stories of 90-year-old grannies reaching the top. More climbers, more casualties.

Plus, I suspect global warming is screwing with the weather conditions there, so it’s even more treacherous than before.

A lot of folks who move to Colorado get enamored about the “14ers,” peaks above 14,000 ft. There are 52 or 55 of them, depending on how you judge a mountain top. I put the figure at 54. Those mountains, especially the ones close to the Front Range urban corridor, are crowded on clear summer days. On Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park on a good day in August there can be more than 100 people on the summit in the afternoon (it’s a really big summit, the size of two football fields!).

On the other hand, there’s the 13,000 ft. peaks, my favorite! Because there’s *nobody* around.

Also very true.

I’ve watched a number of motivational talks by supposedly ordinary people who have done incredible feats, like skiing toward the South Pole or climbing Everest as a blind person. Their message is usually something like, “If I can do it, so can you.” But they rarely emphasize the amount of preparation and support necessary to undertake a major adventure like that, or if they do, their listeners gloss over that information. So, ordinary people have got it in their heads that climbing Mount Everest or skiing across Antarctica is No Big Deal, as long as you have the resources and the right attitude. It’s not quite that simple.

As for me, climbing to the top of Everest would be really very cool, a grand adventure, but my other goal is to live long enough to see my granddaughter graduate college. Somehow, these two objectives clash with one another. So, I’m sticking with the second goal, tyvm.

We got a lot of that in the 80’s: the notion that success was mainly a matter of attitude and looking and acting successful. As if the attitude enough were sufficient. So a lot of people assumed that if they just snorted enough coke, they would look energetic, active, confident and successful and thus be successful.

And a few were, at least for a short time, and that served as inspiration for more idiots.

Off-topic:

So yesterday afternoon I met with the village clerk and the other village trustee that went to water operator school with me, so we could learn how to properly draw water samples for testing.

It turned out the state sent a list of places to be sampled (all our sampling stations, plus several properties in town).

We then spent two hours in the village clerk’s office pouring over the village map trying to figure out where they got the addresses of homes we were supposed to sample.

It turned out about 3/4 of the addresses the state gave us don’t exist. I’m not sure how we are supposed to get water samples from non-existent homes or businesses.

Call scheduled to the state in the morning to ask WTF.

re: #124 wheat-dogg

My sophomores are doing presentations this month and next, and this slide popped up today during one team’s project, “Interesting Facts about America.” I had to talk to them afterward to address the inconsistencies and the doubtful source material.

[Embedded content]

The photo is 19th-Century anti-slavery activist Lewis Hayden.

That happens to me if I go to bed too early (for me), like 10 pm. Six hours later, I’m awake, a full four hours before I have class. So, now I figure I’ll just stay up later, and still get six hours sleep, but awaking closer to my work time.

And just days after Rouhani, the “moderate”, won the Iranian presidential election with 57.13% of the vote. Of course, the Russians were allegedly backing Raisi, so it makes sense that Trump would attack Rouhani and Iran.

Also, no word on Rouhani’s electoral college margins.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Wilbur Ross says on CNBC: “There was not a single hint of a protester” in Saudi Arabia during Trump’s visit.

Wilbur is certainly aware that Saudi Arabia is a feudal hereditary monarchy that imprisons dissidents…he just assumes that a lot of his viewership is unaware of that.

From Wiki:

Human rights in Saudi Arabia are intended to be based on the Hanbali Islamic religious laws under absolute rule of the Saudi royal family.
The very strict regime ruling the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is consistently ranking among the “worst of the worst” in Freedom House’s annual survey of political and civil rights.

Everyone surrounding Trump is fact challenged.

You’ve got Trump off-mike saying that he had just visited the Middle East, after arriving in Israel.

Israel is part of the Middle East.

Wilbur Ross’s dumbassery about protesters being absent from the Saudi leg of Trump’s trip, even though Saudi Arabia is an authoritarian/totalitarian regime that doesn’t tolerate dissent.

Then you’ve got this nitwit:

It’s dumbassery all the way down.

This is the converse of the Mohammed caricatures kerfuffle some 10 years ago: the people who agitated the masses were well aware that there is freedom of the press in countries like Denmark: the government does not dictate or approve the content of its newspapers.

But they had the masses worked up against the Danish government for “allowing” the caricatures to be published, because the uneducated masses in the Islamic world assumed (based on their own experience) that anything published there was dictated or approved by the state.

Trump’s in Israel, which means that Netenyahu’s doing his best to suck up to Trump even though Trump’s actions undermined Israeli national security and a key intel asset on Islamic State (undermining US national security). He’s trying to give Trump the kind of showy pageantry that the Saudis did, but that just isn’t how Israel works (or Israelis do things).

And Rage Furby’s the one who helped facilitate this attack campaign:

A WhoWhatWhy investigation has uncovered numerous substantive falsehoods and mischaracterizations — raising doubts about a case that changed the 2016 election and American history:

• The girl was presented in news accounts — and Weiner’s plea deal — as being 15 at the time, that is, under the age of consent in her state. She was not.

• Weiner’s victim and her family were not, as represented, Clinton fans — they actually were strong Trump enthusiasts. Her story was trusted in part because she was characterized as having no axe to grind with Clinton or the Democrats.

• Weiner’s “sexting” partner was not simply a victim. Contrary to tabloid accounts, she initiated the contact with Weiner. And she went out of her way to seek advice from a GOP-associated figure behind prior efforts to harm Weiner and other Democrats.

It was Leathers, and another curious figure, Charles C. “Chuck” Johnson, an infamous alt-right cyber provocateur, who teamed up to put the girl in contact with the Daily Mail. (Johnson would later claim in an interview with WhoWhatWhy that he was also responsible for a group of Bill Clinton sexual accusers appearing at the October 9 debate — which was intended to rattle Hillary Clinton and generated enthusiastic coverage by pro-Trump media.)

Johnson is wired into a network of high-ranking Trump confidantes, including Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel and Blackwater Mercenary Group founder Erik Prince, and Steve Bannon. He is especially close to Prince, who has allies across law enforcement including the FBI, telling WhoWhatWhy that the two are “friends” who speak “once a week.”

We asked Johnson about the possibility that unnamed others were involved in setting Weiner up, or “catfishing” him, to harm Clinton. Johnson replied, perhaps self-servingly, that he himself had some doubts about the story as reported by the media, but had relied on Daily Mail reporter Alana Goodman to vet the information:

Which (again) goes to show that the whole “offer” to testify in exchange for immunity was a ploy, Flynn’s lawyer trying to get him away from further scrutiny by offering only enough to satisfy Congressional Republicans. Now that the probe has gone deeper and begun to hit pay dirt, he’s suddenly not so interested in testifying.

Did Trump’s new guy side with NC?

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that racial considerations pervaded the way North Carolina lawmakers drew congressional maps after the 2010 Census in order to maximize Republicans’ advantage.

The 5-3 ruling, written by Justice Elena Kagan, was the latest in a series of decisions by the justices against the excessive use of race in redistricting, the decennial process of drawing new district lines for Congress and state legislatures.

Justice Samuel Alito dissented in part from the ruling, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy.

The high court in March demanded additional lower court review of 11 Virginia state legislature districts that Republicans designed with at least 55% black voting-age populations. That followed a decision against Alabama’s state legislative districts in 2015.

It was a 5-3 ruling; sounds like Gorusch wasn’t involved.

The Saudis have occasionally thrown out the idea of a peace plan.

Israel repeatedly rejects it because it would effectively mean the end of Israel as a Jewish homeland.

Oslo makes it clear that the final status is to be negotiated between the parties - Israel and Palestinians.

Nothing stops the Saudis from making peace with Israel, except that it isn’t in their interest to do so. They need to continue funding instability that undermines their regional rivals.

Same thing with Iran, Lebanon, Syria, etc. They could follow Egyptian and Jordanian route, but refuse to do so, because it wouldn’t play well with the generations of inhabitants indoctrinated on the hate of Israel’s very existence, even though a peace deal would help everyone in the long run. The regimes play on fears, and they’re content with the status quo - same as with Bibi in Israel. Abbas is content too with the status quo. He gets the PA funding and a measure of stability, without having to do the heavy work required to make peace; Hamas likewise is currently okay with the cold war (lack of active violence), without a peace deal. No reason for them to change their position, including bringing elections that might show people are tired of the ongoing situation.

Five Decades Before Trump, the New EPA Truly Made America Great Again

The legacy of Ruckelshaus’ first 100 days laid the foundation for the agency’s growth and the subsequent passage of pivotal environmental legislation over the following years. During his tenure, he saw the enactment of the Clean Water Act and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, as well as the reauthorization of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. Following his departure in 1973, the momentum continued with the passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1974, the Toxic Substances Control Act in 1976, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act in 1976, among others.

A decade after stepping down, Ruckelshaus was asked by President Ronald Reagan to return. The first 28 months of the Reagan administration had proved disastrous for the EPA. Under Administrator Anne Gorsuch, the mother of recently confirmed Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, the agency suffered deep budget and staff cuts, scandals, investigations, and even a key official’s imprisonment — all of which triggered increasing public outrage. Ruckelshaus took over and revived the flagging organization.

Will Trump bow down to his fascist friends in Turkey?

American and Turkish officials have provided directly contrasting versions of how the violence unfolded. Local police officials said the Turkish guards savagely attacked a peaceful protest outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence as Erdogan was visiting, in a bout of violence that was captured in detail on video. Turkish diplomats, though, criticized the local police for failing to quell an “unpermitted” and “provocative” demonstration.

The Turkish foreign ministry’s statement on Monday went even further, criticizing “the inability of U.S. authorities to take sufficient precautions at every stage of the official program.” And it demanded that the United States conduct a “full investigation of this diplomatic incident and provide the necessary explanation.”

Wilson was two faced on the issue. Sympathetic towards the mostly white independence movements but unsympathetic towards the Irish and racial minorities due to his Anglophile tendencies and racism. Read about his turning away a young Ho Chi Minh at Versailles. Perhaps history turns out a little different if he talks to Ho.

So I said that in the future it would be thoughtful to pull ahead to the unused pump. She got all upset and said her husband was going to straighten me out. Hubby came along and she complained to him about what I said to her and he asked her why she didn’t pull up to the empty spot!
I can just imagine the phone lady’s husband arriving on the scene. “Why do you want me to fight this guy?”…”He said there was a store in the next town?”…”Why don’t we go check it out?”…”He was listening to you on the phone?”…”Half the county can hear you when you’re on the phone.”…”No what for a month? How I imagine Trump’s meeting briefs:

Bernadette got Howard a heads up about her father- the big bang theory S5x16

Bernadette: I should probably give you a heads-up about a couple of things. Even though he’s retired from the police force, he still carries his gun. But don’t worry, he won’t shoot it. It’s more of a fashion statement.

Howard: Okay.

Bernadette: And just to be safe, when you talk to him, don’t bring up Jimmy Carter, gardeners, foreign people, homosexuals, Sean Penn, Vatican II, gun control, organic food, the designated hitter rule, recycling or the fact that you’re Jewish.

Howard: Got it, got it. Will you e-mail me that list?

Bernadette: So the thing to watch for, if he’s shouting at you, you’re okay, but if he starts to get real quiet, leave as quickly as you can without making eye contact. Not in a straight line, throw some zigs and zigs in there.

Meanwhile, in Spain……..

Spain’s Attorney General José Manuel Maza is set to examine the legality of a plan outlined by the regional government of Catalonia to activate immediate secession from Spain if the central government in Madrid stops it from holding a vote on independence - something it is planning on doing in September or October of this year.

The independence mechanism is detailed in a secret draft version of legislation being prepared by the Generalitat, the Catalan regional government, and to which EL PAÍS has had access.

Speaking about the document on Spanish national broadcaster TVE, Maza described the text as “surprising” and “strange” in a country governed by “the rule of law,” but refused be drawn on legal issues related to the document, saying he had not yet had time to study the draft. He said however, that he would meet with fellow prosecutors on Monday to examine its legal status.

I think such a move wouldn’t last long - the central government would promptly declare it illegal and, in the worst case scenario, send in the army to arrest the secessionist Catalan government.

The Orange County Register has a four part series about “Rehab Riviera” or the drug rehab system in Southern California.

ocregister.com

One of my friends complained that Scientology’s scam rehab, Narconon, was not mentioned, even though there are a number of NarCONons in SoCal. I pointed out the OC Register article concentrated in part on insurance games and soaring insurance costs. Since Narconon isn’t good enough for insurance (doesn’t use a generally accepted method), it’s not able to tap into that money pot, but not for lack of trying.

If you suck that badly at tying a tie, the narrow end will be so short that the slightest breeze pulls it out of the loop. No one feels like they’re in a position to teach Trump even the basics, so he has to rely on scotch tape to hold his tie together. How many other screwy things does he believe because no one will offer him helpful advice?
