“Off the Beat” is a regular crime feature in the TC Palm (TC for “Treasure Coast” as in Palm Beach County, Fla.)
The columnist there writes up Florida crime stories for the newspaper in a style similar to Wonkette but without the coarse language.
For example, this article on a woman who was arrested with meth in her bra reporting she bought it at a yard sale in Vero Beach.
More at the link, all of it funny:
A deputy stopped a woman driving a pickup truck April 28 after noticing she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
She pulled into a home on Second Street Southwest in Vero Beach. The deputy asked for her license. She said it was inside the home, which she said belonged to her grandmother.
She identified herself as Holly Smith, but the deputy recognized her as Christina Sarao because the deputy has “had prior interactions with her.”
Sarao hopped out of the truck and started running, and the deputy caught her.
“I have to poop and I’m pregnant!” Sarao is quoted as yelling.
Investigators determined Sarao had three warrants, along with methamphetamine and a pipe in her brassiere.

I said earlier that the “I never said Israel” bit from today was going to be the “that’s when the wheels really started coming off” moment in the histories of this shitshow written in 20 years. I stand by that, and also want to point out that this probably isn’t a great look for Trump:
Trump’s requests to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Adm. Michael Rogers came after then-FBI Director James Comey publicly revealed before the House intelligence committee on March 20 that the FBI had an investigation into collusion to influence the 2016 election.
Both Coats and Rogers were uncomfortable with the nature of the President’s request and refused to comply, the sources told CNN.
Seriously, if this was a story arch on Veep or West Wing or House of Cards, everyone would say it’s too over the top. And yet reality continues to make art look silly.
It’s probably not a coincidence that this happened while the Trump Horror is touring the Middle East.

Of note on Jimmy LaFave, the article notes that he had surgery for a lump (sarcoma) and some radiation therapy. It’s 6 a.m. in Israel. Disgusting tweets from Fuckface Von Clownstick are imminent.
Just a detour from today’s bad craziness: our Nashville Predators finished off the Anaheim Ducks to take the Western Conference title (a first) and are going to their first-ever Stanley Cup Finals. As good as the rest of the team’s been playing this season, Pekka Rinne has been an almost superhuman beast at goal.
Congrats to the team (so far).

My thoughts. I’m no Mitch Landrieu obvs.
Some quick thoughts on the CSA memorials. I have no problem with their removal. Want to wave a CSA flag on your car or property, that’s your right, I think you’re confused personally since I don’t see how one can celebrate the CSA and proclaim to be a proud American but that’s your right. You don’t need to hate your ancestors who fought for the CSA either but they need not romanticized either. I have no illusions. I doubt my second great grandfather enlisted in the 123rd Pennsylvania to end slavery or that he was sensitive to the slaves’ plight. The other thing is we need to acknowledge Southern Union men and women who risked a lot to stand by their country in a difficult hour. Oh and please Virginia let’s not celebrate Lee/Jackson the same way we celebrate King. And honestly let’s get over the war. The CSA’s defeat was a good thing. I get that the average Southern man did not own slaves but even the poorest Southern white man benefited when the planter elites could point to a slave and say “At least that’s not you.” And honestly the CSA was founded on hypocrisy- the right to secede within the CSA was not looked on fondly. Another thing but the rebels and their leaders were treated much more kindly than they were in other countries. The CSA fighting man got to go home. Many rebels of past did not have that luxury.

Happy it’s because of Richard Mellon Scaife and his Pittsburgh Fibune, along with Hate Radio slime like Jim Quinn and everyone at KDKA. I was SHOCKED when I got an internet radio and tuned into KDKA and heard nothing but right wing hate filled bullshit.
i believe it sigh. I am glad to say though that most of my relatives that still live in Pittsburgh are on the left. My great aunt’s children and grandchildren like my rants. Was disappointed to see that my mom’s cousin, who honestly is a very nice guy became a huge Trumper. It’s hard for me reconcile that the guy who makes us pierogis, nutroll, and kielbasa every Christmas loves Trump.

I really think a lot of them are miserable about the country they knew changing. They erally are threatened by minorities in positions of authority. They really are bothered by things like a Happy HOlidays greeting. I think it’s sad honestly. Ive seen my best childhood friend start to approach the word like a man much older than him. It just makes me wonder what he’ll be like when were actually old.

I had the same observations when I talked about while most Southern whites did not own slaves, they still benefited from ti because the planeter elite could point to the slave and say “Well at least you ain’t that guy.” One thing I wish that could have happened in the South in the 19th century would have been for Southern whites to realize their common ground with slaves and overthrow the rotten neo-feudal system that was the Southern elite.

Someone spraypainted “Shame” across a Confederate monument the city of Norfolk, VA voted not to remove.
huffingtonpost.com
Joe Dillard, president of the NAACP’s Norfolk Chapter, speculated the vandalism could have been inspired by news coverage of a contentious battle in Charlottesville, Virginia, over its city council’s decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
While Dillard said he believes the spray-painter in Norfolk was likely someone “disgusted and fed up with these monuments of hate,” he said his organization doesn’t condone the vandalism.
“There are better ways to accomplish having these symbols of hate removed,” Dillard told The Virginian-Pilot.

I think I saw a history channel documentary on the slave patrols. You’re right. They were often selected from the bottom rungs of Southern white society. The position gave them a feeling of power that they may not have had otherwise and that instilled a false sense of racial superiority in them and their descendants.

Watch it last night, amazing speech
And, it reminded me yet again that our president is incapable of speaking with such passion, intelligence and eloquence (not to mention coherence) for sixty consecutive seconds. Let alone over twenty minutes…
Possibly one of the greatest speeches in the history of American politics. Certainly the best in the long history of New Orleans. I’m a Louisianian, I’ve lived in and love New Orleans, I know every one of the damned statues and more than most people know about the Civil War and its aftermath. I grew up during segregation too. I know Mitch Landrieu doesn’t stand a chance of being nominated for president, buy I tell ya, I’d vote for him without reservation.
re: #293 Charles Johnson
Now starting to get attacked by right wingers who think because I pointed out that terror attacks are intended to provoke hysteria and overreactions, that means I’m a disgusting monster who doesn’t care when little girls are murdered.
These people are really fucked up.
Anything seems to be a political statement to a lot of those folk.
You can care about people being murdered at the same time you care that acts of terror are designed to cause overreactions or terror. The two are not exclusive.
Note Ariana Grand has postponed her tour. I don’t know if that counts as an overreaction, but it is a predictable one.
