The Fox News right wing pundit circuit hasn’t quite figured out that the Muslim travel ban and banning people from specific countries doesn’t work, mostly because the recent European terrorists have been homegrown jihadis, not those who have emigrated from elsewhere (or were even refugees). These are people who have bought into the extremism on their own.

It’s yet another reason why Trump’s Muslim ban fails in the courts on the facts and evidence.

Hm. I think the truth might be closer to the post of a couple of days ago - can’t remember who did it - talking about how they lived in a family with an abusive monster of a father. There’s a common reaction when such arrogant but internally weak men feel disrespected by the outside world…

FOX ‘News’ Just Got Dethroned By MSNBC

For the first time in its 21 years, MSNBC sits atop the cable news universe, knocking FOX News down to its lowest position in 17 years in this week’s Nielsen ratings.

MSNBC finished number one in cable news, and only behind NBA-airer TNT among all cable networks, with a weekday prime average of 2.44 million viewers. Behind them, FOX News, facing internal sexual harassment crises and a growing credibility gap, continued its recent descent with 2.405 million average nightly viewers.

We know how he treats women around him - trophies and something pretty to leer at.

It’s no different for the women closest to him.

What we’re seeing in the dynamic between Melania and Donald in public is probably so much more than that in private, though given that they’re not even in the same building most of the time so far is a good thing - for her.

Trump simply isn’t right in the head, and it’s been apparent for way too long, but the GOP simply doesn’t care. His supporters don’t care, because he tells them what they want to hear, regardless of what he actually does.

What a vile little weasel, waging lawfare to drive poor tenants into destitution for a few lousy nickels.

Isaiah had words for this:

When you come to appear before Me, who requested this of you, to trample My courts?

You shall no longer bring vain offerings, it is smoke of abomination to Me; New Moons and Sabbaths, calling convocations, I cannot [bear] iniquity with assembly.

Your New Moons and your appointed seasons My soul hates, they are a burden to Me; I am weary of them.

And when you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you, even when you pray at length, I do not hear; your hands are full of blood.

Wash, cleanse yourselves, remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes, cease to do evil.

Learn to do good, seek justice, strengthen the robbed, perform justice for the orphan, plead the case of the widow.

Mentioned this before, but the GOP is perfectly pleased at the way that DT’s near-total immunity to consequences for his words and actions has begun to rub off on the whole GOP. They now feel free to say and do things with impunity that they once would have at least tried to cover up or obscure.

That last graf of yours. That he’s not right in the head.

I keep thinking of the cases of elder abuse fueled by dementia that I saw going through family court. The husband would be a crusty old coot, often a WWII veteran (this was the early 90s when I did the escort-to-court thing), and one of the symptoms of dementia is paranoia and irrational rage.

And yes, in public the men were bad enough. Deputies often had to intervene to drag away a guy spraying me with spittle in a rant. In private?

Can you imagine what the reaction from Fox would be if Michelle Obama was acting this way towards Barack? They’d be unearthing every awful, stomach-twisting racist “ghetto abuser” meme they could find, and there’d be an unending parade of so-called experts on the tube yammering and making shit up.

re: #45 Khal Wimpo (wounded at Bowling Green)

Holy Christ. The first time, walking down the red carpet, was maybe just she didn’t want to hold his hand as she was a bit behind him and it was physically awkward.

That there? That was just pure revulsion. An instinctive reaction.

I’ve seen that in battered wives, during the brief time I volunteered to escort them to hearings in Family Court, to keep their deranged husbands from flying at them in a rage. Even being as calming and soothing as possible, I’d reach out to help guide them down one turning in a corridor, and they’d FLINCH like that.

Wow. WTF happened in the last few months? Did the Russians show her the pee-pee tape or what?

At first I was feeling a little sympathy for Melania, figuring maybe she hadn’t had the autonomy to be responsible for her circumstances, and she’s from within 100 miles of where my grandmother was born, and gramma was from a poor peasant family, then I remembered that gramma’s marriage was a hell pretty much of her own making, and she made as much hell as she could for everyone around her. After 49 years, gramma and grampa separated, and gramma said, ‘The first year was OK.’

(Thank you for your service.)

Analyzing Children’s Ability to Detect ‘Sins of Omission’

Stanford researchers found that children as young as 4 years old, under certain conditions, can discern “sins of omission” - misleading but technically accurate information. The researchers found that the order in which information is presented makes a dramatic difference for the study’s youngest participants.

From NPR today:

The 25th Amendment to the Constitution, which outlines the succession of high office if a president dies, resigns or becomes incapacitated, provides a logical process for removing a dementia-stricken president. Yet, Appel asks, will anyone actually apply it?

“Regrettably, our current political climate makes it unlikely that such a measure will be invoked, even when necessary,” he says. “Until the system is fixed, and the political culture changes, medical information is rather useless. … To one side, it will be a smoking gun, and to the other side it will be fake news or alternative facts.”

Well, that pretty much tracks. The Fox Noise audience are all demented old shitbags and they love having “one of their own” in the White House.

Statement goes on…

I was referring to what I knew when I did an interview with Bloomberg in New Zealand in May 2015. In that interview I hinted that Julian Assange and Wikileaks would release information about Hillary Clinton in the upcoming election.

The Rich family has reached out to me to ask that I be sensitive to their loss in my public comments. That request is entirely reasonable.

I have consulted with my lawyers. I accept that my full statement should be provided to the authorities and I am prepared to do that so that there can be a full investigation. My lawyers will speak with the authorities regarding the proper process.

If my evidence is required to be given in the United States I would be prepared to do so if appropriate arrangements are made. I would need a guarantee from Special Counsel Mueller, on behalf of the United States, of safe passage from New Zealand to the United States and back. In the coming days we will be communicating with the appropriate authorities to make the necessary arrangements. In the meantime, I will make no further comment.

Man, it has been ‘Be Social’ day at the bike shop. First, two women from the big city found me coming back from the coffee shop and told me ‘We’ve been here for 3 days and are leaving tomorrow, and we had to get in here, but you’re never open!’ While they were still poking around, a guy who I used to ride with and fix his stuff (not on the ride, we have our policies and procedures) and knew all his friends, but haven’t seen him since 2000 came in, and he said he gets to town about once a year, but I’m never open, and the two women laughed, and he and I chatted for about 15 minutes, then he had to go (on a bike ride, with one of our friends) and the two women spent money, and turned out to work at the place where I had my neuro-evaluation last month. Then a guy who hasn’t been in since my accident came and bought a spare tube for his bike with a motor wanted to show me a picture of it on his phone (just like a guy did yesterday, not my favorite trend…) and I had to nicely tell him I don’t allow motors in here (pictures of them are OK, and he persisted there) then he told me it’s a well-kept secret that I’m open regular hours now. The a couple came in from the out-of-state big city, and enjoyed looking at all my old bikes and hearing about the roads around here, then told me about some of their bikes and rides they have done, and he didn’t even pull out his phone to show me his original Eddy Merckx (eat it, spell-check) with 60,000 miles on it. Then the landlord showed up to find out if the swamp-cooler guy showed up (I heard noise on the roof, but saw no one).

Maybe I should advertise so I get more people in here. Nah, I’d never get any work done.

Out of curiosity, I opened two tabs to check the news. Just because I wanted to see how things are being covered. CNN and Fox News. On CNN there’s three columns, on the left is coverage of Brennan’s testimony, in the middle is an auto-update widget thingy with new stories, and on the right is coverage of Manchester. Meanwhile, on Fox News, there’s a single column, top story: Manchester - big photo and about 20 links on different aspects of the story. Depending on the size and resolution of your monitor, you have to scroll down to see anything on Brennan’s testimony (and even then, the article is titled something like “Brennan fans the flames”).

Fox News really is like the old local 11 o’clock news: we’re going to tell you every bad thing that happened today, right before you go to bed.

As of right now, O’Donnell and MSNBC are in contract negotiations. I think Lack wanted to get rid of him, but then the numbers came out that even news is now 1) Rachel, 2) O’Donnell, and 3) everyone else, and the network has forced Lack to reconsider.

I was hoping something like this would occur.

Lack should realize he has about the only guy on TV that routinely calls out Trump for what he is…a pathetic lying bad business man. That is unique and should be celebrated.

339.18 hours? Talk about ridiculous precision.

As a person who has filled FOIA requests, I can say with absolute certainty that 0.19 hours is bullshit. Federal records management goes by 15 minute increments as the smallest fraction. 0.18 hours == 10.8 minutes, I highly question that number as a time keeping methodology anywhere. And, 338 hours for any records search and redaction on a request like that is unheard of. I’ve redacted 1000 page documents with confidential business information (CBI) in them in less time. The statutory privacy and CBI content in 400 pages of that type of information requested would never be that complicated.

McConnell is 75 and would be up for reelection in 2020… I could very easily see a situation where he retires, so we might not get the joy of sending him packing (also, looking at his electoral history, 2008 was his closest election where he got 53% of the vote - perhaps a charismatic presidential nominee and a competent senate nominee could cost him his seat if he runs again). As for Ryan, we can only hope that a Democratic legislature in Wisconsin draws his district in a way that makes it more competitive.

re: #172 Charles Johnson

What bugs me is that his description stretches so much farther than anti-Semites.

I realize I’m repetitive and an armchair theorist, and thus don’t accept my word to be taken as Truth, but I think it’s important that the GOP is an alloy of belief systems all of which postulate that their intellectual opponents can be dismissed as unserious. Their version of religion, of economics, of culture and social policy: they aren’t a coherent set, but they are unified in peddling contempt of dissent, arguing in bad faith.

It’s what ties the “serious conservatives” to the various absolutist factions.

It’s the how of their thought process that makes them even scarier than they already seem, and why ultimately you can’t trust them to hold even to the things they claim are (their) unchangeable principles. The pattern is that they will presuppose their correctness and moral-ness (right and Right), and work backwards to bend the ideas (and the facts, and the world) to fit their needs. David Brooks and the Prosperity Gospel and supply-side economics drink from the same well.

Addendum: another feature of this trend is that there is nothing conservative about their conservatism. They’re wearing The Treasured Old Ways like a fucking Ed Gein skin suit.

The unchanging core of the GOP is tax cuts for the rich. Everything else is secondary to getting tax cuts for the rich.

In practice, this has resulted in the GOP becoming an accretion of every kind of resentful crank in US politics. First it was the racists who were resentful about civil rights legislation. A second wave of religious bigots and racists got their start with the GOP over school desegregation, and eventually became the forced birthers. This multi-decade process has led to the extinction of moderate Republicans in elected office.

The GOP no longer bothers making a rational case for its positions because it doesn’t have to. The GOP base has been thoroughly programmed by hate radio and Fox News, and will vote GOP no matter what. Well-paid both-siderists in the mainstream media give the GOP legitimacy it doesn’t come close to deserving.

ALBANY, Ore. - A wedding 50 years in the making has finally happened, and it was a surprise to the bride.

A terminally ill Vietnam veteran made it his goal to give his wife the wedding she never had.

Charles Upton said during his battle with cancer he made a bucket list. One item on it was a surprise wedding for his wife.

He and his wife met in 1967 when Charles Upton’s sergeant asked him a life changing question.

“‘Do you know anybody that would like to teach a young girl how to speak English?’ Of course I raised my hand. I was engaged to be married at the time so seeing my wife was love at first sight,” said Upton.

The couple is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

Mr. Upton’s 70th birthday is on Saturday.

Sarah Posner:

“…if today’s hearing is any guide, Congressional Republicans are still intent on shielding Trump by undermining the investigation in the mind of the public.

And so, again and again, Republican members of the Committee, particularly South Carolina’s Trey Gowdy, tried to get Brennan to say that no evidence of Trump campaign collusion with Russian meddling in the election exists. But Brennan repeatedly refused to render a judgment on whether there was collusion. Instead, he only repeated his refrain that, because the CIA is not a law enforcement agency, he turned over its intelligence gathering about contacts between the Trump camp and Russians to the FBI, so that the FBI could conduct its investigation into whether there was collusion.”

I don’t know if anyone listens to Ana Marie Cox’s podcast, With Friends Like These, but she has something of a recurring theme, which is basically that white/privileged people need to practice their own sort of respectability politics (the “pull your pants up” sort of politics we saw from certain segments of the black community in the 90s). I think it’s particularly necessary within the conservative movement these days, but I’m not sure there’s anyone around who has the clout and/or wherewithal to actually do that.

Inhofe and similar tools are sublimely sure they can keep the peasants on their side. In this they are reminiscent of the French aristocracy and its sycophants, circa 1789. They even rely on the same methods, superstition and misdirection (with suitable updates).
I wonder if they realize the risk? Probably not, since they have been brainwashed from birth to dismiss all European radicalism as “Marxism,” not realizing that Marx had not even been born when the French revolutionaries were going around lopping heads and pitchforking fatcats. Ironically, the risk is magnified because today’s peasant masses are armed with AR-15s and Glocks rather than pitchforks, something for which Inhofe and his gang can take full credit.

In case you missed it, Gallup did its semi-regular update on creationist views in America, complete with misleading headline:

In US, Belief in Creationist View of Humans at New Low

Sounds great, until you get down to the details.

Namely, what is declining, barely, is young-earth creationism.

The acceptance of the scientific view of the human past has not changed over the last few years of the survey.

The young creationist category has lost, in a very small measure, to a “God guided” view of evolution, whatever that means.

And this is the real problem - the terminology in this poll, like so many other polls, is the driver. Unless a poll dives into the details of meanings of words then what we are seeing may simply be a semantic change.

Republican media poison. 50 years ago you could speak Spanish to someone on the phone anywhere in the country, and nobody would raise an eyebrow. I know because I did it 50 years ago. Maybe you were talking to a friend in Chile, or a teacher or a fellow student. If you were an adult, you might be talking to a diplomat or making a business deal that would benefit the United States. The point is, not even the hard right thought it was a bad thing.

I have some 1940 era magazines, Popular Mechanics and National Geographic and the like. They feature some prominent full page ads for the Berlitz Language School, “The Swing is to Spanish,” with suitably colorful maps and charming illustrations of Latin hospitality. With access to Europe largely closed by the war, many enterprising Americans were looking south for new opportunities. It helped a lot if you knew the language, though, and Berlitz saw an opportunity of its own.

Mentioning Seth Rich on the air might get him escorted out of the building. And he seems to be in the frame of mind where he might just say ‘fuck it’ and go all Network.

Go for it, Lumpy! Then I won’t have to look at that puke-inducing mug of yours.

LOL, make Tucker’s show an hour longer!

Even if Sean Hannity announces his future status at Fox, that still is no excuse for him being a water-carrier for the GOP and his fake news bullshit. Sean Hannity has only one shot at redemption-if he fails to take it……

Finally, a Gallup article from last week that got very little coverage, but is part of the package with the previous two I linked:

Record Few Americans Believe Bible Is Literal Word of God

It’s only a small decline, though. Yet the long term trends on this topic are a bit clearer than that on creationism.

Which brings me back to the methods behind these polls. They are testing the triggering capabilities of special words, more so than understanding of the topic involved.

I realized there actually is one good thing about having Fuckface von Clownstick installed by a Russian cyber agitprop/psy-op.

The complete break down of several GOP institutions under the pressure of trying to pretend this is all OK.

If you told me 6 months ago that Bill O’Reilly would be out at Fox and that Sean Hannity was probably soon to be next I would have laughed in your face.

Hannity, like many at Fox News, has had a couple thousand shots at redemption in the last decade and a half. Shepard Smith is the only guy that took one (NSFW version):

Remember that Lumpy had a two-month “key-man” escape clause on his contract that was triggered by Bill Shine getting the heave-ho. From what I understand, he turned it down. Which is baffling as shit that he wants to get fired outright instead.

Seriously, there’s something very, very wrong here … and it goes beyond his ideology.

Rup *really* wants bSkyb, huh?

That probably figures in, but really it just seems things are changing at Fox News anyway.

They still have a company and need to make the bucks to keep it going. They have taken some big hits over the last year. I don’t think that is going to be good for building a future audience as the current falls away. So, they need a business model change and the bad happenings over the year has hastened the need.

Megyn Kelly leaves. Greta moves, maybe pushed. Ailes crashes and burns in sex scandals. A few women staff members leave or are bought out. Bill O’Reilly finally gets the boot for being the Creep He Always Was. And now Hannity acting all crazy betting his name for whatever.

Seems Hannity’s moves may be very limited.

He’s trying to protect the “Sean Hannity” brand.

It will fail. Especially if he doesn’t repent.

Getting fired makes him a martyr, which if he’s going to create his own online presence is probably a better creation myth then “I left after they started firing all the sexual harassers.” A subscription based on demand streaming podcast/video network could make sense as a business model going forward - especially if he can convince other cast offs to join him in order to generate content.

I’m working on a rebuttal novel to Hillbilly Elegy.

Hard to believe how pissed off I still am at that asshat’s portrayal of life here eastern Kentucky.

Working title is Fuck You JD Vance…
obviously the title will possibly improve during the process…

A perfect example of the times. That ass is still looked upon with loving eyes by a lot of wingnuts. He gets interviews for being Olie North. Yuck. So many Americans buy the act and miss the toxic sludge behind it.

Speaking of polling, here’s an interesting one, and it pertains to the correlation between religiosity and Trump support one hand, and the affinity of Trump to religious nationalism and the rise of the hard right in eastern Europe:

Religious Belief and National Belonging in Central and Eastern Europe

This graph summarizes the tight coupling of religion and nationalism:

The resurgence of religion in the aftermath of the fall of communism in the Soviet Union is one of those phenomenon that would have surprised our comrade ancestors.
