A Gorgeous Performance by Acoustic Guitar Maestro Tommy Emmanuel: “Eva Waits”

Music • Views: 37,063

Live! At The Ryman was recorded live at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN on 27 February 2016, except “Eva Waits” which was recorded on 8 December 2016 at the Big Room in Chico, CA. This is a genuine “had to be there”…no fix ups…no frills recording. Each of my guitars has pickups and microphones that are included when you buy them, so the sound you hear from this recording is exactly as it sounds in the hall. Album is available 5/19/17 more info here: tommyemmanuel.com

GA-06 still seems to be the brass ring right now. If Osoff can pull it off, the GOP is gonna shit a collective brick.

Continuing from the dead thread: Also Rob Quist in Montana. Quist is well-known across the state, Gianforte just lost his race against Montana’s Democratic governor.

Vindication for Anymouse! ;)

Well, vindication for him always saying that Dems should contest every race. The whole “your chances of winning the lotto get a lot higher when you buy a ticket” type thing…

That reminds me, I need to check my lotto tickets. /s

I have thought about running for my own congressional seat if our state Dems don’t put someone up. (I can’t afford such a campaign though without bunches of help - plus I would have to fight off erotic Romance editor and atheist - at least it wouldn’t be a news dump because I admit it openly.)

Every day the Quist campaign was sending 2-3 requests for more money. I actually contributed an additional amount tonight — after making a contribution to his campaign on Saturday. I can’t wait to see my Visa bill for May.

You have much to lean about proper Internet use if you wish to stay hidden…..

Things I learned:

a) Don’t run for office
b) Don’t get a ham license
c) Don’t have a parent killed in warfare
d) Don’t write on Daily Kos about saving your village post office under your assumed name there: a newspaper reporter can suss out who you are from halfway across the state to do an interview on the telephone.

This is also the heritage of that sort of Calvinism that sees wealth as an outward sign of inner grace.

And those who are wealthy will go to great lengths to appear gracious.

Why did we love Dallas? Because it showed that the wealthy could be venal, immoral twits.

It was a form of titillating ideological porn.

Dallas was never a hit in Russia, because they were raised on the notion that the wealthy were innately immoral.

If I were to do something extremely unlikely like win the MegaMillions, I would likely give the majority of it away to causes I favour and to my town’s services (like the public library and park).

I don’t have enough financial acumen to manage that many zeros, and my ability to find someone who can without trying to rip me off would probably fail too.

I don’t think she’s batting away Trump’s hand because she doesn’t like him. I think she does it because she is a narcissist as well and wants to protect her own image. Steely asshole is harder to pull of if you have a reputation for holding hands and being nice. M2C.

40
Amory Blaine  May 24, 2017 • 12:53:23am

One thing I’ve been disappointed with lately is the investigation into David Clarke. Here we have a madman running his department like a complete asshole, yet for all these years, local news i.e. The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel didn’t have the sauce to check out his past. It took an outsider from CNN to come in and do the dirty work. His plagiarism could have been exposed years ago and quite possibly got him booted out of office. This is partly why our politics is so fucked up. The press is not doing its fucking job.

Job description of press:

To help network owners sell advertising space/time.

Their job is not to inform us or present any sort of balanced view of events.

News is not there to inform us, it is there to attract readers/viewers.

The more viewers, the more they can ask for their product.

This is probably the best evidence as to why the GOP is so dead-set on killing this investigation. At best, they had reason to suspect that Trump was dirty and they continued to support him long after they should have cut him loose. At worst, they knew that he was on Vlad’s payroll and went along with his election because he was their best shot at the White House. Neither scenario is going to look good if Donny gets the boot.

45
Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))  May 24, 2017 • 1:22:17am

re: #44 Targetpractice

The GOP realized that to dump Trump meant losing his supporters, who are not really fans of either the Dems or the GOP but love Donny because he successfully sold himself as the anti-politician.

The party certainly liked the fact that DT could say and do things that would wreck any other politician’s campaign (or even career) and come away unscathed or even strengthened. And some of that juju seems to be rubbing off on the GOP in general, which endears him even more to the party and makes it less likely that they would ever move against him.

Fluffy pablum, by Kathleen Parker

Melania and Ivanka Trump show the world what feminine power looks like

The money shot

It is true that Western women are encouraged to dress modestly, as Melania and Ivanka did. It helps that both are beautiful and have fathomless wardrobe budgets. Despite their apparent ornamentalism, there’s little doubt both women made a lasting impression on Saudi women, who would have recognized and identified with their feminine power. Wordlessly, they projected strength, intelligence, grace — and a timeless wisdom that all women share.

Gag me with a spoon.

Mike Pence Planning to Hold Rally in Louisiana (goes to Politico, more at the link)

Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday has scheduled a free rally in Louisiana on Wednesday that is being promoted by the state’s Republican Party.

An advisory from the Louisiana GOP says that Pence is headlining the event at Cajun industries in Port Allen, just outside of Baton Rouge, where he’s also slated to hold a roundtable with small business leaders.

Louisiana GOP chairman Roger Villere said the rally is being organized by Pence’s office and will be held in a nearby warehouse that holds “a few hundred people.” He described it as “not really a political rally as much as it is a rally for jobs and businesses.”

It was released in his schedule Tuesday.

I’d argue in this instance that what’s killing their ratings was firing Bill’O, as he was not only their biggest ratings draw, but he also was Lumpy’s lead-in. Most of the codgers who tuned in to watch Bill stuck around for a second-helping of bullshit.

The hilarious irony is that if FNC starts being harsh on Trump, they’ll scare off the remaining diehards who want to be told that he’s the greatest thing to happen to this nation.

My cat is dying. He has hours. I’m shocked he made it through the night. He weighs nothing and can barely stand. He is merely two concerned eyes and a furry bag of bones. But he doesn’t complain, and isn’t in pain. So I have no plans to intervene. Now 20 years old, he’s just wasting away.

It’s so sad. Most of last night he was seemingly introspective, and just wanted to be alone outside. He stared at the sky for hours. He’s been weird for the last couple weeks and his diet has become tuna broth and smooshed salmon-water, which barely holds his attention anymore. He no longer reacts to catnip, and literally stumbles into the wall when he turns corners. He used to bound up trees in a primal display to me as I pulled up to my GFs apt, years ago, he was really strong, and opened floor to ceiling sliding glass doors in our second apt… We always figured he had some raccoon in him, since he loves the challenge of getting into the garbage and he always used his claws like fingers. Actually he has always been extremely good-natured. I’ve never seen him use his claws in anger. And he always answers with a noise when when you speak with him.

He knows people well. He often tries to communicate. He’s conscious. He isn’t suffering, but he’s fading fast. His life has beaten every odd ten times over, and he can be a pain-in-the-ass, but somehow none of that makes this feel right. As insignificant as someone else may think the life of a cat is, my relationship to this animal, my friendship with Baxter Milo, has given me new insight into the nature of existence.

Trump’s finally out of Vatican airspace this morning, after having a visit with the Pope, who clearly wasn’t enthused with Trump’s visit. The Pope knows Trump’s word counts for nothing and can’t be trusted with or on anything, and it showed.

Britain, already reeling from the Manchester bombing, is indicating that the US leaked more classified information that undermines Britain’s national security, which is only days after Trump leaked Israeli secrets to the Russians.

All this is on Trump and his spectacularly awful character and judgment. All of this was known before he even ran for office. It was on display and his supporters and the GOP simply didn’t give a fuck about any of it. They want to see government burn, and Trump’s budget is more of the same - gut the very government programs that many of Trump’s supporters rely upon - from Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, on down to various public health measures, like cutting funding for the National Institute of Health and National Cancer Institute.

Why all the cuts to government programs?

Well, something has to cover the costs for his massive tax cut plans (which the GOP at large also intend to do, just over a longer timespan). Double counting and math errors done on purpose to hide the true costs of this massive redistribution of wealth that GOP approves of - from everyone else to the rich.

Give him pets and make him comfortable. He had a good run of 20 years, and an owner who loved him and gave him a good life.

Good kitty. Sympathies to you, Tom.

My money is on Georgia, but if we can take Montana too, then there’s gonna be a lot of bricks shat at GOP HQ. Hell, even if both races were lost, the margins would be so close that it wouldn’t be difficult to do the math and see all the seats in danger next November.

And you know what, their supporters know this, they value their medicare and social security but the reason why the conservative movement succeeds is not the wealthy elite who run the GOP who wish to get rid of those programs entirely but the GOP rank and file who have a problem with other read people who don’t look like them having access to the same programs they do.

Nothing about Trump’s proposed budget makes sense from an economic perspective. It double counts tax cuts benefits to hide the massive debt it creates, assumes rate of growth that is far in excess of what we’ve experienced over past 40+ years, and falling short means bigger debt still, and he doesn’t even provide any clue as to what taxes are being cut or anything else.

But the cuts to govt programs, especially the safety net are all there - because that’s truly what’s important. Mass redistribution of burdens from the rich on to everyone else, and the rich get the bulk of the tax cuts, because of course.

re: #230 The Vicious Babushka

The problem: Trump’s budget anticipates around $2.06 trillion in extra federal revenue over the next decade, based on the aforementioned increase in economic growth. That new money then would be used to offset Trump’s proposed tax cuts, as the Administration previously said that the tax cuts would be revenue-neutral. Unfortunately, that same $2 trillion also is earmarked for closing [the] budget gap. I tried to come up with a household analogy here, but they were all just too ridiculous. Only in D.C. can someone present this sort of math with a straight face.

If the “budget gap” is the same thing as the tax cut “offset” I think this would make sense.

But I’m pretty sure the budget gap being referred to is the existing budget gap, not the budget cap caused by the tax cuts.

The tick-tock on this leak has the “terror level critical” happening subsequently. The UK anti-terror squad needed the press blackout to apprehend the collaborators, and the WH effed that up.

Yep, and now there’s a distinct possibility there’s a bomb-maker on the loose somewhere in the UK. I highly doubt the Manchester Arena bomber made it himself…..it was made for him, I’d bet.

The Brits, owing to their experience with the IRA, know very well that taking the bomb-makers off the street is crucial to preventing further atrocities. That’s why they’re pissed about this leak - it hampers the intel services’ ability to roll up the rest of the gang.

re: #248 Sir John Barron

Trump’s double counting the tax cuts, including effect on the economy, without counting the cost of lost revenue. He assumes the economic growth at a rate far higher than at present. It’s hardly a fiscal conservative budget, but one that purposefully explodes the debt so as to force even deeper and steeper cuts than he’s already proposed.

I’d agree that Clinton’s email server played a decisive role in deciding the election. But I wouldn’t agree with the idea that the media is responsible for it.
After all, it was Clinton who never seemed to grasp the seriousness of the issue and how it eroded the public’s already shaky confidence in her. Her inability to do those things meant she was never able to put the story behind her. And then the Comey announcement came, which undoubtedly surged the issue back to the top of many voters’ minds.
Whatever the reasons, when people thought of Clinton in the final weeks of the race, they thought of her emails. And that was a very bad thing for her.”

I assume you’ve got your visa already. If not, better put a rush order on one.

Most Chinese ATMs accept American bank cards, but ones at the big banks, like ICBC and Bank of China, are the most reliable. Most Chinese businesses do not take credit cards, so your Visa/Mastercard/Amex/Discover will not be useful other than at those ATMs and some big hotels.

Carry your passport with you at all times, but in a secure place. Pickpockets are common in crowded areas like bus and subway stations. Other than that, China is a very safe place.

If you are flying into Beijing Capital Airport, the international terminal (#3) is pretty far from the domestic terminals (#1 and 2). There is a free shuttle train and a bus, allow for about 30 minutes between terminals.

China blocks Google, Facebook, Twitter, Medium and YouTube, so if you want to stay in touch, download a free VPN before you arrive. getlantern.org and psiphon3.com are what I use. Skype is often unreliable for video calls.

I’ve never been to Dalian, but I hear it’s a beautiful place. Have a great time!

re: #305 wheat-dogg

Thanks! I was just thinking last night about if I needed to get some currency or rely on my credit card the whole time. I’m travelling for work and I believe one of my colleagues will be ferrying me back and forth from the hotel to our office. The hotel I’m staying at has 3 restaurants in it so I probably don’t need to venture out for food either. So, since I probably won’t be that adventurous I may not need currency, but I’ll keep it in mind.

The other thing I was wondering about was the whole internet thing. I’ve been reading up on it and knew those things were blocked and was trying to prep my home router to let me VPN back into the states. I’ll definitely check out those free ones though.

Thanks again! Hopefully my masters, er I mean my job, will allow me some free time while I’m there. :)

Been on hold from the National Visa Center for a while now. Yeah and Republicans think the best way to solve our problems is to cut programs and employees from places like this.

Dr Lizardo  May 24, 2017 • 8:16:38am

So here’s the latest regarding the Manchester Arena attack:

- Detectives are investigating a suspected terror cell in connection the attack which left 22 people dead and 59 injured. Ian Hopkins, the chief constable of Greater Manchester police, said it was “very clear that this is a network that we are investigating” as armed raids continued across the city. US intelligence sources are reported to have said that the suicide bomber Salman Abedi, had help.

- Three more men were arrested in south Manchester in connection with the ongoing investigation into the attack and a flat was raided in the centre of the city after a controlled explosion was used to force entry. A 23-year-old man arrested on Tuesday, believed to be Ismail Abedi the brother of the bomber, is still being questioned.

- Salman Abedi’s father, who lives in Tripoli, insists his son is innocent. He also confirmed that Abedi travelled to Libya in the last six weeks.

- One of those detained overnight was identified by neighbours as Adel Forjani. He is said to be in his mid-40s and, like Abedi, from a Libyan family. The Libyan community in Manchester have condemned the attack.

- In messages posted online, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, but this has not been confirmed by officials investigating the blast.

- Twelve victims of the attack have now been named. They are: Jane Tweddle-Taylor, 51; Nell Jones, 14; Martyn Hett, 29; Angelika Klis, 40; Marcin Klis, 42; Georgina Callander, 18; Saffie Rose Roussos, eight; John Atkinson, 28; Kelly Brewster, 32; Olivia Campbell, 15; Alison Howe, 45; and Lisa Lees, 47. All the victims will be named when post-mortems have been completed over the next four or five days, Hopkins sad.

- An unnamed female officer from Cheshire constabulary also died in the attack. She was attending the concert with her husband who was critically injured in the blast.

- Twenty people remain in “critical care” across Manchester. Injuries include major organ damage and potential loss of limbs, according to Jon Rouse, of the Greater Manchester health and social care partnership.

- The home secretary, Amber Rudd, has confirmed that Abedi was known to the security services. Her French counterpart, Gerard Collomb, revealed that Abedi had travelled to Libya and probably Syria, and had proven links with Islamic State, citing information from British investigators.

- Rudd criticised the Americans for revealing Abedi’s identity. She said: “The British police have been very clear that they want to control the flow of information in order to protect operational integrity, the element of surprise. So it is irritating if it gets released from other sources and I have been very clear with our friends that should not happen again.

- Almost 1,000 troops are being deployed to Britain streets after the terrorist threat level was raised to critical for the first time since July 2007. Troops have replaced police guards at No 10 Downing Street, parliament and Buckingham Palace, and elsewhere around London. The changing of the guard ceremony at the palace has been cancelled.

and also:

The top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, Adam Schiff, has said that if US officials leaked critical details of the Manchester bombing investigation, it represents a “real problem” and that the British authorities “have every right to be furious with us.”

“I don’t know what the source was. I can tell you it wasn’t from Congress because we haven’t been briefed,” Schiff, who is a driving force behind the congressional investigation into the Trump campaign’s links with Russia, said. “We would have had to obtain that information from the British because I don’t think we would have had it before they did, and we should have been very careful and respectful of the British investigation and the timing which the British felt was in their investigative interests in releasing that. That should have been their discretion, not ours. If that is something we did I think that’s a real problem.”

Didn’t he spend a lot of the campaign dumping on Obama for telling people our troops were moving in on ISIS in Syria? It’s the usual Trump habit — he does exactly what he criticizes others for doing.

Part of what makes the whole Seth Rich CT such a laugh for me is noting that many of those who are pushing it are the same people who once were absolutely sure Hillary was going to turn evidence against Obama regarding Benghazi in order to sabotage his reelection bid and tee her up for a run against President Romney in 2016.

There really is a simpler explanation, Chris: The media helped put this monstrosity into office and now is trying to save their collective asses yet again by foisting the blame for such onto the losing candidate. She couldn’t put the “scandal” behind her because hacks like yourself would never allow her to do so, you used it to justify your hatred of her and as an argument for why putting someone like Trump in office was “better” by comparison.

Hell’s bells, if Hillary came out tomorrow and said that losing was entirely her fault because she’d used an email server, the “serious” pundits would still insist she wasn’t contrite enough because she wasn’t volunteering to go to jail over it.

Another public hearing, another attempt by Trey to show how he was such a hot-shit prosecutor, and another journey behind the woodshed on national TV. Hillary, Comey, Yates, and now Brennan have run rings around the guy we’re so often told had such success in the courtroom.

Maybe in South Carolina courts. He’s dealing with Washington now. They do things differently and Trey hasn’t figured that out yet.

Ah okay, I only really know their older stuff. That brings me to another point. I love how conservative actors and musicians cry about how they’re treated but they were the ones who had no problem with how the Dixie Chicks were treated for a pretty tame statement. Natalie Maines didn’t praise Saddam Hussein, she merely said she was ashamed to be from the same state as Dubya. Somehow that was bloody murder but Ted Nugent telling Obama and Clinton to suck his gun was great.

I never read Atlas Shrugged but I read the Fountainhead in philosophy class as a junior in high school and it just seemed to me that Ayn Rand just wanted to justify her selfishness through a convoluted philosophy. She also as we know was a okay with using that same government to help herself out. Believing in limited government is one thing, using Ayn Rand as a guide for your entire philosophy is Holy Shit grow up and then there was Ryan acting shocked when he “found out” Ayn was anticlerical.

Cal Poly braces for protest as College Republicans plan to host ‘rape culture’ denier

A month after Cal Poly hosted a series of events as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Cal Poly College Republicans plan to host a speaker who once said, “There is no rape culture in the West.”

Lauren Southern, a Canadian conservative-libertarian activist, onetime political candidate and self-published author of “Barbarians: How Baby Boomers, Immigrants and Islam Screwed My Generation,” is scheduled to speak from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in room 286 of the Fisher Science building. The event is titled “Return of Traditional Women.”

Southern is part of a cadre of young, conservative provocateurs including Milo Yiannopoulos (who himself spoke at Cal Poly in January), Richard Spencer and Tomi Lahren. Vice News Canada labeled Southern as “the alt-right’s not-so-secret weapon.” She announced her Cal Poly speaking gig to her Twitter followers Sunday.

Sadly, this piece of shit is my representative. I just faxed this letter to his Corpus Christi, Victoria and DC offices:

Dear Mr. Farenthold,

Your despicable use of the tragic murder of Seth Rich in an attempt to deflect from questions about Russian meddling in the 2016 election is beyond disgusting. His family has repeatedly asked that their son’s death not be used to score political points, yet you appeared on TV this morning and did exactly that. Your flimsy excuse for using conspiracy theory talking points was that there is “stuff circulating on the internet.” There is also “stuff circulating on the internet” about you having sex with goats. Does that mean it is credible?

You are a disgrace to your constituents, and I intend to back your opponent with my money, volunteer time and vote, in hopes that your political career is over after the next election. Until then, I will assume that any stories I see “circulating on the internet” about you having sex with goats is true.

Yeah why did he use that song?

Wiki:

The opening bass riff from this song “was something that Tony Butler used to play just as a warm-up,” said Steve Churchyard, the engineer for the record.[3] The opening of the song, before Hynde’s vocals appear at about 40 seconds, has been used as the opening theme ‘bumper’ for Rush Limbaugh’s popular American talk radio program since 1984, during his days at KFBK in Sacramento, California. He didn’t use the lyrics, but Limbaugh said in 2011 that he chose it because of the irony of a conservative using such an anti-conservative song, though he mainly liked its “unmistakable, totally recognizable bass line.”[4]

I am now feeling quite proud of myself.
It has been raining relatively hard & non-stop since about 9AM. Between noon and 1PM I usually take my beasts out briefly to drain.
Noticing a sudden change in wind direction, and reduced water impacting my back porch area, I fashioned two rather long leashes so I might send the dogs into the now light spray while I remained under cover.
The beasts quickly realized the disparity in our situations, rapidly completed their business and retreated to cover….

Of course, the strange change in wind direction likely means a tornado is bearing down towards the front of the building. But, we’ll just deal with that later…

Not that it makes Sheriff McDimwit any less of a fool, but I wouldn’t take any bets on the bolded bit being too much of a mere exaggeration…. Texas, y’all……

ETA: kind of a fundamental rule these days: no matter where or what the circumstances of any sort of heinous attack, some RWNJ will pipe up to “blame” everything on lack-of-guns.
