Another Bombshell From the Post: Kushner Discussed Setting Up Secret Communications Between Trump and the Kremlin

Another Friday news blast
Politics • Views: 43,948

The Washington Post has been launching one bombshell after another at the Trump gang, and this Friday we have yet another one: top Trump adviser Jared Kushner had discussions with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak before the inauguration about setting up a secret communications channel between the Trump gang and the Kremlin.

This is looking worse and worse for Trump and his crew of villains.

Jared Kushner and Russia’s ambassador to Washington discussed the possibility of setting up a secret and secure communications channel between Trump’s transition team and the Kremlin, using Russian diplomatic facilities in an apparent move to shield their pre-inauguration discussions from monitoring, according to U.S. officials briefed on intelligence reports.

Ambassador Sergei Kislyak reported to his superiors in Moscow that Kushner, then President-elect Trump’s son-in-law and confidant, made the proposal during a meeting on Dec. 1 or 2 at Trump Tower, according to intercepts of Russian communications that were reviewed by U.S. officials. Kislyak said Kushner suggested using Russian diplomatic facilities in the United States for the communications.

The meeting also was attended by Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser.

And that’s not all. The Washington Post dropped another one today: Senate Intelligence Committee requests Trump campaign documents.

The Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential race, has asked President Trump’s political organization to gather and produce all documents, emails, and phone records going back to his campaign’s launch in June 2015, according to two people briefed on the request.

Trump now has quite a bonfire waiting for him when he returns from Europe.

Important note in the story - WaPo received an anonymous letter in December describing this meeting but were unable to verify.

I’ve openly wondered for a while if Article 5 can be invoked against one of NATO’s own members, if that member is compromised.

Surely there’s a provision for something like a Communist takeover of a smaller member state (Italy or Greece come to mind, back in the old days).

Severe thunderstorm watch posted, with rotating thunderstorms on radar approaching us. Yay spring.

When our Internet service goes out, if there is a tornado warning issued, we have to push a manual button on our tornado siren. (Pesky Internet of Things.) As the village trustee who lives closest to the tornado siren, guess who gets to go outside in a tornado to hold the button.

US has regressed to developing nation status, MIT economist warns

The economist describes a two-track economy with on the one hand 20 per cent of the population that is educated and enjoys good jobs and supportive social networks.

On the other hand, the remaining 80 per cent, he said, are part of the US’ low-wage sector, where the world of possibility has shrunk and people are burdened with debts and anxious about job security.

Mr Temin used a model, which was created by Nobel Prize winner Arthur Lewis and designed to understand developing nations, to describe how far inequalities have progressed in the US.

When applied to the US, Mr Temin said that “the Lewis model actually works”.

In theory it could. Article V is the collective defence treaty for any attack north of the Tropic of Cancer against a NATO state.

During Greece and Turkey’s dust ups, Article V wasn’t invoked because they are both NATO states. I would assume if one NATO state went rogue, NATO could invoke collective defence.

Of course this development preceded Trump and may be the reason for his election. The lot of the people who have fallen behind — the majority of the country it appears — was not greatly improved under Obama. They threw the dice and we all lost. Obviously there are other factors, including racism and sexism, but many of the Obama - Trump voters may have been desperate and took a gamble that failed.

“They thought that slumlords belonged in the White House. They do not have good judgement.”

It also has entered my thoughts that since they have become accustomed to doing whatever they’ve wanted to do their entire lives and getting away with it, they viewed these back channel communications and their underhanded shenanigans the same way. They certainly not only do not have good judgment, they are also ignorant of the way the government they’re supposedly leading works.

Basically, they don’t want you if you’re going to go on their medical system, even if you have money to invest. That’s pretty much the way it is for all first world countries now.

I’m not serious (yet).

There is also Poland, though with that nation bordering Russia I’m not too sure how safe it would be. When we were in Gdansk a couple years ago, Russia was piling armour and aircraft into its exclave of Kaliningrad thirty miles away. People in Gdansk were somewhat nervous. Russia also closed the border to Americans travelling overland (not that I was interested in doing that).

Well, a few voters saying “not because of Sanders” didn’t cause Quist to fail. Montana is somewhere in the range of R+22. The fact Quist did as well as he did means if that Democratic momentum continues, then a lot of House seats become vulnerable. (It also means run candidates for every seat, as NH and NY showed.)

Saskatchewan. I’ve enjoyed our trips there.

When I still had a Sanders sticker on my car driving to The Pas, MB, a lot of people in rural SK were commenting that Trump seemed like a buffoon to them. I heard no one in SK who wanted to talk abut US politics praise him, not one, driving from the MT/SK border all the way round the Great Lakes to Sarnia, ON.

When our Internet service goes out, if there is a tornado warning issued, we have to push a manual button on our tornado siren. (Pesky Internet of Things.) As the village trustee who lives closest to the tornado siren, guess who gets to go outside in a tornado to hold the button.

This Kushner thing is sinister as all fuck. Now there is a historical use for a back channel in diplomacy, most notably Kennedy floated proposals through John Scali via Russian Spy Alexsander Feklisov to Nikita Kruschev in order to bypass Kremlin hardliners during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Thing is though this wasn’t something set up in advance and the point of it was to bypass the more militant elements of the Soviet Government, not to bypass or subvert our own intelligence services.

“Lack of government experience” was the #1 selling point for these chucklefucks. We were assured that people who had no experience in being politicians would mean they’d do positive things that a politician wouldn’t. Instead, they’ve been working to outperform the Nixon and Reagan administration for “most corrupt bastards in modern history.”

If Trump hopefully accomplishes one thing, it will put the bullshit lie that we need a businessman to run the government aside for a very long time. Or maybe I’m being too idealistic and I’ll crap out a unicorn tonight.

I wouldn’t go there, based on history. Gazprom is a business Orange Foolius knows nothing about. He’s not an energy trader guy. He’s all in on real estate, resort deals and trump-branded grifts. That doesn’t mean mean he wouldn’t be willing to launder stolen energy rubles through refinancing his properties, but actually owning a chunk of Gazprom might a bridge too far.

You’re probably right, but if someone offered Trump, say, 40 billion dollars for the completion of one task, I doubt he’d care what type of deal it was.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was also released today 50 years ago. Zappa didn’t stand a chance with record sales going up against that.

I’ll have to remember that’s something to give thanks to The Beatles for.

We got tasked in cleaning up a French mess and a Vietnamese Civil War and the side we took weren’t nearly as pure as they portrayed themselves to be. Not that the Communists were saints but from what I know about Vietnam’s history, I understand why what happened happened.

IIRC, Ho Chi Minh looked first to the US when he was seeking anti-colonialist support after WWII. That went nowhere because of mindless US anti-communism.

I don’t recall how he treated J. Bacon (perhaps I wasn’t at LGF when that happened), but that isn’t really any different than Carl Paladino or Donald Trump doing the same (but they are public officials).

You weren’t. It was something I honestly only heard about later. Most of the time I knew DF here, I was civil. I didn’t take his shit when he would go into partisan DF- Go team GOP mode but I never actually felt disgust with him. More frustration that he felt obligated to belong to a party that I thought didn’t repsenet the kind of man I thought he was.

I just bought the two record 50th anniversary version of Sgt. Pepper that was released today. That brings me up to eight vinyl versions of the album in my collection.

I brought home fish and chips for dinner so my hands have been too greasy to open the record. Later this evening…

I bought the the cd/blu-ray package. I’m very happy with the book that came with it! And I’m no great judge of remixes, but love the new stereo version. At the very least it’s interesting to hear mixes with the drums and vocals not panned entirely to one channel.

Erasure frankly sounds too Stalinist to me. I much prefer he go down as America’s worst President. I can’t see any movement to rehabilitate him.

Erasure from history is just a fantasy. It’s also a fantasy that there will be no attempt to rehabilitate trump. Even if he does get booted from office, wingnut faith requires a movement to rehabilitate him. E.g., Nixon, McCarthy etc.

First, best, and definitely the one that will blow all the others in the lower 48 away in terms of wildlife.

In 4 days of being at Yellowstone, I saw grizzly and black bears (including bison jams caused by fleeing bison from a grizzly attack), moose, elk, deer, coyotes, grey wolves, bald eagles, etc.

At the time we went, it was calving season too, so plenty of bison calves plus the bears had their cubs too.

And just to keep the old VP on the list, “Why was Manafort so anxious for Pence to be Veep?”

Manafort had arranged for Trump to meet with his first choice for the job on July 13: Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Afterwards, the plans was for Trump and Pence to then fly back to New York together and a formal announcement would be made, a campaign source said of Manafort’s thinking.

What had previously been reported as a “lucky break” by the New York Times was actually a swift political maneuver devised by the now fired campaign manager. Set on changing Trump’s mind, he concocted a story that Trump’s plane had mechanical problems, forcing the soon-to-be Republican nominee to stay the night in Indianapolis for breakfast with the Pence family on Wednesday morning.

Swayed by Pence’s aggressive pitch, Trump agreed to ditch Christie and make Pence his VP the following day, according to a source.

cbsnews.com

Another source in that story says it was Kushner who wanted Pence, which doesn’t really help old beady-eyes’ position much.

Obviously Zion’s big feature is the main canyon, but there are other areas that are pretty cool and not at all crowded. We really enjoyed hiking on the western side of the park.

Most women, their primary is an OB/GYN. For men, internist is pretty common. Maybe cardiologist in some cases.

Never has my primary physician been an OB/GYN - only time I saw one was when I was pregnant. For women who don’t believe in birth control - maybe if they are pregnant all the time?

General practitioner/physician is always the first point of call - for men and women - but maybe things are different where I live?

Have a safe and hopefully relaxing holiday weekend, O Lizards, emphasis on the safe.

I have Republican relatives coming to town to help celebrate my son’s graduation from high school. Two different batches of ‘em over the next ten days, all from Texas. Will probably not be able to keep up with the threads and certainly not with Rachel Maddow till about next Friday. Will have to make my daily calls to the congress critters from my cell phone in the car. On the other hand, they will not be allowed to leave Fox ‘News’ on all day in this house, so concessions are required from both sides.

Now I have to go back and try to at least catch up the two previous threads before the mob descends tomorrow. Includes one 9-year-old dinosaur buff who is going to have the time of his life visiting Dinosaur Ridge and the Morrison Museum with his great-uncle who knows as many dino names as he does (and has just as many plastic dinosaurs). My husband is going to have as much fun as his great-nephew!

The idea of self-driving cars still gets a serious WTF reaction from me, even though it seems nearly everyone views it as coming in the near future.

A computer (that thing that has microsoft moments, often needs to be rebooted to clear out random state/software shit and perpetually needs care and feeding of its software) is going to drive a car all by itself (where mistakes really can be fatal and reacting reasonably to unexpected situations isn’t exactly a computer’s strong point).

The self-driving car software has different requirements than a browser. It doesn’t matter if your browser crashes, so software like that gets pushed out with a lot less testing and review than software for critical systems.

A change in the software for cellular towers at a company I worked for required a line by line review in a review meeting. Vastly different than the code reviews for the desktop applications I worked on, which required one person to view the code changes, and for it to pass tests by our testing team.

It was bad enough that the Bridge program would misbid and misplay no matter how I tinkered with it but the Chess program was just as full of Swiss Cheese holes. I had to write a library for creating and parsing messages for communicating between two platforms. That was probably my best tested piece of code ever: my test harness would generate a random message, record how it generated it, then parse it, and verify that the results matched what I expected. Then I ran this nearly 100K times.

Edit: The point of that paragraph was to try to say that I suspect the testing on car software will involve way more testing and simulation than a browser.

There’s a reason that we’ve only seen braking and parallel parking so far from cars. They know they have to take it slow and get it right. Personally, I think the sooner we stop people from actually driving, the safer it will be. I suspect that we will release self driving cars later than we could because of people’s fears. The capabilities in these cars will surpass humans in safety long before we release them, but there will be resistance.

The engine control computer present in cars is doing very well-defined tasks relating to engine control (fuel/air ratios etc. I imagine), which strikes me as a much simpler software task than making a computer driver. A driving program is going to be a very complicated thing that will almost certainly have to be frequently updated, especially after an incident occurs (e.g., that recent case where the sensor on a semi autonomous Tesla didn’t recognize a threat).

There have been plenty of cautionary moments in the deployments of auto pilot, fly by wire etc. To me it’s more misplaced automation, radically inflating the costs of transportation so people can browse the cell phone or drink
rather than drive.

Add up electric, hybrid, airbags, back up cameras, anti lock, anti spin, anti skid, drive by wire, and entire computers dedicated to fuel air management and your $40,000 car is about $35,000 in technology and the rest to actually move.

Yes.

Coming back from Little Rock, my car engine kept dying on I-135. Spent a day north of Salina, KS, tried to get home again, same result.

Called the national Smart hot line. They asked if I thought I could get home at a lower speed (like thirty-five). I pointed out it shut down less often but if I didn’t break down somewhere I could.

Turned out after the Denver Smart dealer took my car from here to there on a flatbed truck, a single wheel weight on a rear wheel had disloged (presumably from the bad roads here). The engine would vibrate, the computer would shut it off. Apparently the weight was flung off on I-135.

I’m guessing maybe in cities, not so much in rural areas.

Moreover, there are things like construction that temporarily re-route roads, &c. GPS maps don’t generally account for that.

You can’t see my house on Google Street View, for example. Not because they didn’t send a car here; they did. It is because the car only went down US-26 and did not go down any dirt roads or streets here. (That actually protects the entire village’s privacy, but you could not use Street View to find my house.)
