However, it seems that he found his One Way Out

I didn’t know he lived in Savannah. He was scheduled to appear out here on the islands a few months ago but cancelled a week before the date. The news is probably just making its way around here now; I’m headed out to the bar later and I’m sure the locals will be talking about it.

Their music wasn’t really my thing, but they soundtrack every bar within a hundred miles out here.

The Allman Brothers Band was a page on a photo album in time. They broke new ground. They were one of the original jam bands. They bent the rules and the sounds. They were immensely talented. I never saw them whole. My loss. I thought they were overexposed at one time, but they had that soul and blues feel that always did it for me.

Want to see your favorite band live? DO IT.

My oldest brother knew the Allmans well and when they played here in Macon, GA, he’d play back up with them. My brother passed away in 2015. He played bass guitar and was considered one of the best musicians in town. When he was younger, he traveled quite a bit with other bands, especially in Europe. The Allmans once rented a house in my part of Macon, about half a mile from where I live now. The house still stands, but I don’t know if anyone lives in it now. Back then, this part of the city was known as the boondocks since it was so far from downtown.

Salamanders are closer to frogs, zoologically speaking. From Wiki:

Batrachology is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of amphibians including frogs and toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians. It is a sub-discipline of herpetology, which includes also non-avian reptiles (snakes, lizards, amphisbaenids, turtles, terrapins, tortoises, crocodilians, and the tuatara).

I’m going to have to look up ‘amphisbaenids’.

My total time investment in the meal was maybe 10 minutes to make and brown the meatballs (rice was already cooked, bought the Teriyaki sauce, and frozen steam-in-a-bag veggies).

Made a meatloaf in it the other night that came out perfectly. I am so loving this appliance! Not only for the convenience and speed but because now I can cook stuff in the summer without heating up my tiny house. This is a BFD.

CNN)Philippines presidential hopeful Rodrigo Duterte has refused to apologize after his controversial comments on gang rape.

A YouTube video appeared over the weekend of Duterte joking about the 1989 rape and murder of an Australian missionary that took place in Davao City, in the country’s southeast, where he is mayor, CNN Philippines reported.

“I was angry she was raped, yes that was one thing. But she was so beautiful, I think the mayor should have been first. What a waste,” he said, according to a CNN Philippines translation of the comments.

So let’s just be clear here, dude.

Let’s say you were so spectacularly gullible that you actually believed a narcissistic serial fraudster whose entire claim to fame was playing an asshole boss on TV and gaudy wealth built on ripping off people poorer than him, declaring bankruptcy repeatedly, and open admissions of bribery. All of that was easily accessible public-record knowledge, and any remotely informed voter should have been able to figure out he was a narcissist who has never done anything for anyone other than himself.

But let’s say you really are that bad at life that you couldn’t figure that out.

And let’s also say you are so incompetent at information gathering that you could not figure out that he contradicted himself from one speech or interview to the next. You have the memory of a goldfish, sure, not your fault.

Let’s also say that your BS detector is so completely broken that you couldn’t tell he was a lying asshole just by listening to him talk. Sure, his smarmy word-salad lies are so obvious to me it’s literally unpleasant to listen to him talk, even when the topic isn’t something awful, but let’s give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you are so bad at life you literally cannot tell when someone is lying to you.

Even then, that means you listened to a man who blamed every problem in the country on immigrants, insulted “Mexicans” left and right, insulted people of color, insulted Muslims, insulted the parents of people who died serving the country, mocked prisoners of war for being prisoners of war, mocked the handicapped, insulted women, encouraged violence against protesters, and gleefully professed an outright hatred of the First Amendment and freedom of the press.

You looked at a guy who promoted, reveled in, and used as one of his central rhetorical platforms xenophobia, racism, religious bigotry, authoritarianism, misogyny, violence, and all-around assholery, and you said “I’m okay with this.” You looked at a proto-fascist extolling fundamentally un-American ideals and said “he says he’ll give me a job”.

So even if we assume you are spectacularly gullible, ignorant, and willfully uninformed, we still have no choice but to accept that if you believed Trump was going to follow through on his grand promises that benefitted you, he would also follow through on all the terrible, racist, xenophobic, unAmerican things he promised with just as much vigor.

So yeah, sorry, even if I give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were suckered, you are still a proto-fascist-enabling asshole. We all have to live with what you wrought, you’d damn well better suffer too.

Maybe next time around you’ll pay just a little more attention, and with any luck also vote for someone who isn’t a spectacular asshole in every way shape and form.

Some trends I notice:

2. They’ve been told their feelings have validity, and that angry shouty stuff by certain kind of “traditional” male has validity, so their episteme is made of spun sugar.
3. There is an enormous mythology in which liberals are Always Wrong, such that they don’t even know policy positions for parties or individuals. Hence the confuse about things like health care.

What I do is try to explain stuff without hitting the magic words that trigger partisan reflexes and thought-stopping cliches. Which is hard, because FOX, AM radio, et cetera exist to spawn those things. Sometimes stuff sinks in where they at least informed about the specific issue…

…but not often. The feel-good effect of being certain—and smug—pulls them back, as does the fact that I’m often the lone dissenting voice in their environment.

I find (4) the most amazing, because of how stunned people are that maybe other people have other perspectives because of in-depth history. But there’s a (5) where Americans are taught that the bad stuff in US history are aberrations, not part of a larger social pattern that generated both good and bad results. People are oriented towards “heroic” history where there’s singular figures, rightness (both ideas and morality) flow from conviction not cognition, and challenging convention is inherently good (as opposed to contextual useful, but only within a sound argument). Folks are primed to be this way.

What scares me is I’m really beginning to think that the “how you think” matters more than “what you think” because people don’t admit that we’re emotional, impressionistic, social learners, and heuristic thinkers. If they lack a skeptic’s toolkit, you can eventually spin someone around such that they won’t even notice the change from A is A to A is B.

Hence the power of narcissists and other pathological manipulators to keep people believing even as the belief system changes shape.

Most people in the real world do not spend much time listening to news or researching candidates in depth; they can easily fall prey to a biased news source if it’s the only one in town or they may catch part of a speech that sounds sensible. As mentioned previously, I once listened to part of a Trump speech during the primary and it exuded empathy for people who lost their jobs to foreign competition; there was no mention of Mexicans or the wall or racism. A friend who supported Hillary had the same experience — he thought Trump was very effective.

We who pay attention are aware of his incompetence and malice — but the typical voter is not, especially when legitimate media promotes the both sides have serious flaws argument; when legitimate media hound Hillary for her emails. It is the entire media who should be held responsible for the election of this monster — not just Faux News, Breitbart etc.

Speaking of guns I got a chance to handle and shoot the newly released Kimber K6s today. On the upside the trigger is fantastic for a DAO snubbie revolver, ultra smooth with no progressive stacking and a surprise break at the end. On the downside being the lightest production .357 mag means the recoil is just tremendous. Probably ideal for a last ditch concealed carry gun where the emphasis is on ease of concealment.

I’m a little late to the hatpin party, but I’d like to point out that for a hatpin to be anything but a decorative weapon, you need to have long hair that is worn “up” in some fashion so that the hatpin has something to go through other than your head.

Being a proper lady with long hair, I have used hatpins for their original purpose, though my longest pin was only a few inches long.

It’s funny, but I could have sworn the GOP made a whole big fuss just last year about Hillary signing documents on her way out the door and suggesting that she’d lied on them so she should be jailed.

Ouch on that price. If I a) had the money and b) was willing to spend that much, I’d get a Chiappa Rhino in 2” instead.

The 6 o’clock firing position of the Rhino is VERY unforgiving of poor hand position. Seen reviews where people have injured their off hands pretty severely from the hot gasses escaping the cylinder gap. I also don’t buy the recoil reduction theory, the Rhino just redirects some of the recoil that would go into muzzle flip straight into your hand. My last gripe with the Rhino is that the hammer lever doesn’t lock back on full cock, meaning the trigger position is the only indicator that the hammer is cocked for single action.

Oh, nice. One of the better Colts. I’ve owned a couple of Colts (Trooper Mk III & a 357 (Trooper predecessor)) in the past but since I’m a DA shooter, I’ve always ended up selling/trading for S&W instead. Does that one have the trademark Colt stacking trigger pull in DA? Still, if you’re going to do Colt, that’d be a really nice range toy.

Yeah the Peacekeeper has a two stage stacking DA trigger, I was shooting it today at the range when the guy two lanes over started letting people take turns with the Kimber. My Dad has a blued Python w/ a 4 inch barrel, but it’s too nice to shoot w/ only a tiny bit of pitting on one side of the trigger guard.

They’ve done some really good stuff too, but it’s in the ‘that’s what you’re supposed to do’ column for the most part.

Is this like the ones made a while back that were so light that the recoil would work the bullets out of the cartridge after 2 shots, locking up the cylinder?

Didn’t see any crimp jumping today, probably because we’re talking about the lightest 6 shot .357, there are much lighter alloy & plastic frame 5 shots out there. Only time I’ve heard of crimp jumping being a real problem is with super high power .454 Casull loads, where high rearward recoil pulls against the static inertia of very heavy bullets.

Antifa aren’t really an organized group, but can also be known as Black Bloc. It’s a label that’s been applied to them. Basically they are anarchists. If Clinton won, they’d be protesting and rioting just the same. If Bernie won, they’d be protesting and rioting too because he’d do something to piss them off.

re: #259 The Major

The Major updated his #MemorialDay message to include the passing of Curious Lurker.

May Allah smile upon you for eternity, Aminah. We miss you….

Yeah we do. So we carry her lessons forward best as we can. I like to think I know what she might have said about the 2 fine humans who stepped up and paid the ultimate price. But she would almost always surprise me with what she had to say.

Voice of America has put its article promoting Ivanka Trump’s book back up on their Website again. They originally pulled it down after outcry from the public.

They also have a FOX News-esque article about Christianity being under attack in interviews with rural Americans.

The local bar has Fucks News on one of the TVs and tonight’s story at 8 PM was something about “Obama-Era Pork”, which included footage of a school lunch program, and shrimp on a treadmill.

Me, thinking: They know he’s out of office, right?

They really are part of an alternate reality.

Yes, by all means RWNJs, next time you find yourself in the same room with a visiting PM, feel free to shove him (or her) out of the way. If it’s Trudeau you can find out how a hockey puck feels as the RCMP All Stars slap you around the arena.

re: #272 The Vicious Babushka

Antifa is the new Black Lives Matter

Nyet and I tussled over this a few days ago, winding up in enlightening each other on the issue I think.

There are organised groups in Europe called Antifa, and some of them espouse violence in their aims.

They are a subset of the larger non-organised group “anti-fascist” (which is what antifa is an abbreviation for).

Here we have no antifa groups like Europe. We do have anarchists, but they are not necessarily anti-fascist, they are anti-government (the type of government wouldn’t make any difference).

Certain right-wingers want to conflate the European meaning of antifa (violent groups) with anti-fascism in general.

Well that has to put them in a bit of a pickle. One of their own, Best, is a true, for real hero. But how do they spin what he’s a hero for? Dying to defend Muslim women from another one of their own?

Nearly forgot. Monday the 29th would be John F. Kennedy’s 100th birthday. His mother, Rose Kennedy, lived to 104 but it’s vanishingly unlikely that Jack could have lived to anywhere near that age. His health problems were already severe at the time of his murder and would only have gotten worse. He probably would have passed some time in the 1980s, perhaps even earlier, even if he had been able to live out his natural span.

re: #288 Anymouse

The major obstacle to a manned Mars mission is dealing with radiation. Current technology can’t sheild a crew from constant radiation over 18 months. How could a Mars mission succeed if everyone dies from radiation sickness on the way?

And here’s a novel thought - what if the problem wasn’t the candidate, but rather the electorate?
