Hey Charles, how’d you get the nickname Icarus? Something about flying too close to the sun?

Every one of the half-brained libertarian schemes to set up some sort of independent community fails. Whether the Galt’s Gulch stunt in Chile, Sealand off the coast of Britain, Somalia, Chile under Pinochet, &c, they are either grifts or are overrun by someone else.

Oh it was a horror show! The film went $75 million over budget in a matter of months, the set was destroyed by a hurricane, on and on.

I still think the cinematography and the crazy sci-fi plot are highly redeeming qualities. And Dennis Hopper as the leader of the Smokers. Hah!

Or any food at all. Or dry goods. Or clothes.

The sorts of people who go all-in on these sorts of schemes have plenty enough money for that, they just don’t want anyone to be “the boss of them” (which means they can’t work together and such things universally fail). The self-styled Principality of Sealand (a libertarian paradise with “prince” for a leader) couldn’t make it and they were right off the coast of Great Britain.

There was a proposal by a group of libertarians led by no less a figure of ill-repute than Glenn Beck, back in the early days of the Obama admin when the TPers were in full swing. Had all these blueprints and such laid out, just needed the funding to come through and they’d have their own little libertarian utopia.

AFAIK, it fell apart right around the time that the GOP decided to drop the whole “we’re a bunch of ‘independents’” act.

It’s like I said the other night, the wingnuts started out by insisitng that there was no evidence whatsoever that there’d been communications between the Trumps and Russia.

Then they moved on to asserting that even if there’d been communication, there was nothing illegal about that.

Following up that was assertions that even if the Trumps had lied about communicating with Russia, that wasn’t criminal because they could just “revise” their statements.

Now they’re outright saying that even if the Trumps talked about criminal actions with the Russians, that doesn’t mean anything because nothing happened.

If we follow this pattern, next will be arguing that even if we’ve caught the Trumps working with/for the Russians, that’s not criminal because Russia’s an awesome country.

I can’t help but shake my head every time I open a story from a “serious” pundit about the need for “civility” in politics. You assholes just spent the better part of two years arguing that a vulgar talking yam needed to be given a pass because he wasn’t a politician and thus should not be held to the same standards of decorum. So spare us the sudden “shock” that things have become so uncivil now under his presidency.

The nearest Wal*Mart to me is sixty miles away (either the one in Sidney or the one in Scottsbluff).

Even if it was next door I would never shop there. Goes back to an issue when we lived in Oklahoma. Our next-door neighbours both worked at Wal*Mart (they were brother and sister, the woman had a nine-year-old daughter). Their father was at home in hospice care; the daughter would stay with him at night while they worked the overnight shift.

One morning round three AM the daughter came over to our house to tell us that her grandfather had died. We called the local Wal*Mart and the store manager would neither let us speak to either the girl’s mother or uncle. I went to Wal*Mart to raise hell with the overnight manager while my wife kept the girl at our house. Wal*Mart threatened to have me arrested for attempting to pass the message to the girl’s mother that her father was dead and her daughter was at our house.

Screw Wal*Mart with a giant rusty garden weasel.

Alternet is ofttimes to the moonbat left what Free Republic is to the authoritarian right (without the racism and sexism).

However, sometimes they come up with good articles, such as this one for Memorial Day:

The Untold Story of Memorial Day: Former Slaves Honoring and Mourning the Dead

(more at the link):

During the spring of 1865, African-Americans in Charleston, South Carolina—most of them former slaves—held a series of memorials and rituals to honor unnamed fallen Union soldiers and boldly celebrate the struggle against slavery. One of the largest such events took place on May first of that year but had been largely forgotten until David Blight, a history professor at Yale University, found records at a Harvard archive. In a New York Times article published in 2011, Blight described the scene. While it is difficult to pinpoint the precise birthplace of the holiday, it is fair to say that ceremonies like the following are largely erased from the American narrative of Memorial Day.

During the final year of the war, the Confederates had converted the city’s Washington Race Course and Jockey Club into an outdoor prison. Union captives were kept in horrible conditions in the interior of the track; at least 257 died of disease and were hastily buried in a mass grave behind the grandstand.

After the Confederate evacuation of Charleston black workmen went to the site, reburied the Union dead properly, and built a high fence around the cemetery. They whitewashed the fence and built an archway over an entrance on which they inscribed the words, “Martyrs of the Race Course.”

Fifty Years Later, Gold Star Mother Remembers ‘The Only Son I Had’ (goes to Stars & Stripes)

More at Stars & Stripes

Sitting in the shade, next to three other Gold Star mothers, she reflected on her son’s short life. In addition to baseball, he loved cars — especially his black Ford Fairlane.

In 2002, on a trip to Vietnam with another Gold Star Mother, [Emogene] Cupp visited the place where her son died, and placed a wreath there. “It was very interesting. He wrote home how pretty it was,” she said. “I could see where he had been.”

“Always so many (memories),” she said. “He was the only son I had.”

Every year for a decade, Dennis Mason has visited the Vietnam Wall on Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

“I kept to myself” after Vietnam, Mason said — until one day when he went online and found a page devoted to his very own unit. Now, he can’t get enough of it.

Next year will be the fiftieth anniversary of the death of my father in the Vietnam War.

I have been to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington (when I was stationed in Virginia Beach) to view his name inscribed on The Wall. (The Memorial is an eerily quiet place.) I have also been to my father’s resting place at St. Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts (when I was stationed as a Navy Recruiter in Pittsfield, Mass.—as a child I was not permitted to attend his funeral or interment).

Perhaps either a trip there, or a trip to his grave site in Massachusetts would be an appropriate trip for me next year.

I think he means that if the Dems ever controlled congress and the WH they would “switch to 51 votes, immediately”, which, if you remember correctly, is exactly what Obama and the Dems did in 2009-2010 when they passed the ACA with 51 votes. The nonstop Trump apology tour continues apace. The GOP spent years claiming Obama was busy apologizing for the US. Now, it turns out that was all so much projection and GOPers are trying to keep fraying alliances in place because Trump’s going after decades-long alliances all to show something - and enabling Putin’s agenda in the process.

Trump’s disastrous foreign policy positions are coming home to roost, and the GOP has no way to head any of this off so long as they continue enabling this regime. They’re complicit in the damage being done. McCain will come home and continue to vote for Trump’s agenda.

As for the debate here at home, most Americans know that NATO is important, and more important than sucking up to Putin. Most Americans think that working with our allies is more important than attacking our allies and undermining longstanding alliances to show that you know natsec secrets. Many Americans see that Trump’s business ventures are why Trump does what he does.

I’m sticking with my theory that the Trump Organization has been willingly and knowingly laundering Russian Mafia/Russian Oligarch money for the past several years.

That’s the “derogatory information” the Russians have on him. And yes, it would be serious. It’s a felony. As per Wikipedia regarding the 2002 Prevention of Money Laundering Act, “The act prescribes that any person found guilty of money-laundering shall be punishable with rigorous imprisonment from three years to seven years and where the proceeds of crime involved relate to any offence under paragraph 2 of Part A of the Schedule (Offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985), the maximum punishment may extend to 10 years instead of 7 years.”

At the very least, three years in prison would be no walk in the park, that’s for damn sure.

I wonder how many people can even tell you the definition of ally.

This goes back to what many are saying about the election and the lack of basic understanding of politics and civics. And that is here in America.

I don’t think your common American worried about getting through the day can tell you much about NATO and how it relates to their every day worries.

And that is a huge problem.

I think Trump is leading America down the road similar to what 1930s Germany went through. He wants everyone looking at others to see how they are taking advantage of them. He wants Americans to look at other countries as not friends to America. He wants people to pick out their enemies and how we can eliminate them as a problem and he wants Americans to look at each other to see who is with him and who is against him, which means they are against you the Trump supporter.

It is often said he loves chaos. He sure creates it.

So, what does a common America really think about Trump’s European trip? Probably not much which also means they don’t really care.

Correction:

We approved and enacted a law that gets us most of the way to health coverage for all Americans. Obamacare wasn’t the endpoint, but a move to cut the uninsured rate down significantly, both by creating exchanges where insurance companies can sell their plans to persons needing them that are more than catastrophic plans and are worth more than the paper they’re written on and by expanding Medicaid to cover more people.

The uninsured rates are highest where the states under GOP control have refused to expand Medicaid and have moved to block Obamacare provisions at every turn (including advertising that these programs are even available).

The GOPDontCare plan guts all aspects of Obamacare and would make the health care coverage for most Americans worse - by removing most of Obamacare along with many of the protections Obamacare confers (preexisting conditions for instance).

The end result is that a handful of people might see lower premiums (those who are in good health and young), while everyone else sees higher premiums (older, sicker, and preexisting conditions - both on/off exchange and on/off employer based coverages).

And why is the GOP doing all this? They’re paying for a massive tax cut/redistribution of wealth from the have-nots to the rich.

WWI’s Harlem Hellfighters Who Cut Down Germans and Gave France Jazz

What the 369th had that set it apart was strong leadership by black officers as well as white— and the best damned band in the American Army. And what it brought to France, in addition to the blood and bravery of its soldiers in the fight against the Germans, was something revolutionary. It brought jazz—a kind of music, just then growing out of ragtime, that was not like anything the French, or most Americans, had ever heard before, but that caused a sensation wherever it was played.

At the very least, three years in prison would be no walk in the park, that’s for damn sure.

en.wikipedia.org

Yeah, well, here’s the thing: one of the few things Donald Trump is very good at (or very good at hiring people who are very good at) is the construction of complex and opaque financial structures to:

1. Maximize his personal and/or companies’ profits
2. Minimize, shield, or deflect losses to other entities to the maximum extent possible
3. Obscure both the sources and destinations of funding to the maximum legal extent possible.
4. Ensure major legal representation to avoid any repercussions from points 1-3.

That the Trump Organization (and The Donald personally) is lousy with shady Russian money has been an ill-kept secret for years: it’s just that the “willingly and knowingly” part is going to be extraordinarily hard to prove (as in Federal Court). See Point 4 above…

What would be the best outcome in the long run?

Maybe a tough lesson of how the U.S. Constitution works to protect the country is needed about now. This country needs to have some lessons on government and civics taught to it.

I wonder if allowing him to stay and finish his term will lead to more like him.

Maybe it is better for the future to have an impeachment to send a message for the future and as a display that we are actually going to enforce the Constitution.

Arkansas Does Not Apply US-Canada Income Tax Treaty to State Income Tax

On March 13, 2017, the State of Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (the Department) issued Legal Opinion No. 20170217 addressing the applicability of the US-Canada Income Tax Treaty to Arkansas personal income tax. The Department determined that the treaty applies only to US federal income taxes, such that “income taxes levied by individual states, such as Arkansas, do not fall within the treaty’s jurisdiction.” As a result, “the treaty’s provisions are generally not recognized by this state.”

The Department also determined that the Arkansas credit for personal income taxes paid to another US state does not extend to taxes paid to the Canadian government or a Canadian province. Non-US taxes may be deducted from gross income for Arkansas personal income tax purposes, but not credited.

The US is one of only a few countries that tax their citizens on income no matter where it comes from or where they’re living. However, they have tax treaties with various countries that exclude the first $X from being double taxed.

e.g. I live in Germany, and am taxed on my work here. I only have to pay taxes to the US on anything over $102,100. So:
- everything less than $102,100, taxed only by Germany.
- everything greater than $102,100, taxed by both countries.

Arkansas is choosing to ignore the tax treaty. I have no idea if that’s legal, but it’s a dick move for people from there, working overseas.

I’m hazy about the legal ramifications, but I understand federal treaties take precedence over state laws — some silly Constitutional thing in effect since before 1860. So, whichever legal eagles in Arkansas crafted that law had better be prepared to explain themselves to the IRS and the federal courts.

I posted the link about Tax Treaties because I am watching the news for the topic.

During his administration, Obama pursued and entered into an unprecedented number of tax treaties. Including Switzerland & the Camans. These countries were the traditional venues for those wishing to “hide” money for whatever reason.

Now, this leaves a problem for those who formerly used the various countries as tax havens. Where does all that dark money go to get bleached?

The Independent Consortium of Investigative Journalists got a document dump so years ago and has been sorting thru it. Most recently they published what they have found so far in the Panama Papers.

It could be that Trump’s “war room” is planning on being particularly active on social media; being as his favorite method of communication is Twitter, it’d make sense that he (or rather, his war room communications team) would try to get as many bots as he can to disseminate his message as widely as possible.

Good old-fashioned social engineering.

I think for the safety of the United States and the world at large, Twitter should be shut down immediately to cut Trump off from Social Media.

It is obvious this is his favorite tool for spamming and rallying his dangerous followers.

He may even turn it into a tool of The Trump Army and use it to call people to take actions against the day’s targets.

As noted by Dr. Matt below, the claim Trump’s seen a sudden spike of BS accts is itself BS. Trump’s account has long had issues with bots/fakes.

If the number of new bot followers is being minimized by an equal number of blocks, then it’s “something”. A lot of people are advising of a weekend blocking spree.

Right, just noticed it’s a bit more complicated with those…not sure what browser you’re using, but in FF, I also get some options under “This Frame” - choose, “Open Frame in New Tab”, then copy the URL, and delete all the junk (starting with the question mark) at the end so it looks like this:

https:// twitter. com/i/videos/tweet/869299116509196288 (I manually inserted those spaces so it wouldn’t autolink)

You should end up with this: twitter.com

385
ObserverArt  May 30, 2017 • 10:38:44am

Hey Cillizza…

It’s hard to keep up with all the bad shit that is going on due to Trump.

Maybe we get side-tracked from something like a politician choking a media person by things like a Trump supporter attacking women on a public bus and then slashing the throats of guys trying to help them.

Maybe we see the ugliness of Trump in Europe and are stunned by what that means for world stability and it causes us to talk about all that.

But we will never forget it, just can’t talk about it 24/7/52 like you did about Clinton emails.

Damn, I sure can understand why you never answered my email to you about those emails. You couldn’t give a straight answer because you are a fucking punk.
