Congressional Probe Into Russian Interference Widens to Include Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen

And Trump’s communications director bails out
Politics • Views: 41,542

Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen is now a focus of the Congressional investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Trump lawyer Michael Cohen confirmed to NBC News that he has received requests for information from the Senate and House intelligence committees as part of their probes into Russian interference in the U.S. election.

A Congressional aide said the request letters, first reported by ABC News, were the same ones sent to former Trump aides Carter Page, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Mike Flynn and others. Those letters sought information about Russian contacts, and asked the recipients to turn over any communications with the Trump campaign about Russia.

In the dossier on Trump prepared by former British spy Christopher Steele, Cohen was alleged to have attended a secret meeting in Prague to discuss Russia’s hacking of Democratic targets, something Cohen has adamantly denied to NBC News and others in the past.

And in what may be the start of a major exodus of rats from the Trump gang’s sinking ship, White House communications director Michael Dubke has resigned.

I’m not sure we’ll see an exodus just yet. Again, it goes to Trump valuing loyalty over all else, including competence, knowledge, and skill.

People like Cohen have been in Trump’s orbit long enough to know that they’re rewarded for loyalty, so there’s incentive to stick around as long as possible. A few might realize that they’re dancing with the devil in the pale moon light, and that cutting a deal with prosecutors makes more sense than hoping Trump will offer you any kind of assistance down the road (pardon or otherwise).

The same goes for Manafort, Flynn, and Kushner, and the administration’s approach to the Kushner news from over the weekend has been one of avoidance, followed by denial, and then baffling with BS. Expect to see a lot more of this.

This is now:

Washington (CNN)One of President Donald Trump’s personal attorneys, Michael Cohen, has received an “invitation to provide information and testimony” that pertains to the Russia investigation to House and Senate intelligence committees, Cohen has confirmed.

“I declined the invitation to participate, as the request was poorly phrased, overly broad and not capable of being answered,” Cohen told CNN Tuesday, adding that he considered it a “total fishing expedition.”

This was then:

President Trump on Thursday called out Susan Rice for refusing to testify before a Senate committee investigating both Russian meddling in the 2016 election and allegations of Obama-era spying on Team Trump.

“Susan Rice, the former National Security Advisor to President Obama, is refusing to testify before a Senate Subcommittee next week on allegations of unmasking Trump transition officials. Not good!” Trump wrote in a pair of tweets.

Just did this post in honor of Curious Lurker in the old thread…want to post it again because Chris Cillizza is such a dick. He wonders if anyone talked about Gianforte choking and body slamming a reporter over the holiday weekend.

- - -
Hey Cillizza…

It’s hard to keep up with all the bad shit that is going on due to Trump.

Maybe we get side-tracked from something like a politician choking a media person by things like a Trump supporter attacking women on a public bus and then slashing the throats of guys trying to help them.

Maybe we see the ugliness of Trump in Europe and are stunned by what that means for world stability and it causes us to talk about all that.

But we will never forget it, just can’t talk about it 24/7/52 like you did about Clinton emails.

Damn, I sure can understand why you never answered my email to you about those emails. You couldn’t give a straight answer because you are a fucking punk.

The police officer who shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice was fired Tuesday for inaccuracies on his job application, while the officer who drove the patrol car the day of the November 2014 shooting was suspended in the case for violating a tactical rule.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams announced the discipline against officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback, who were involved in the fatal shooting of the boy at a recreation center as he held a pellet gun.

Loehmann, who shot Rice, was fired for inaccuracies on his application form, Williams said.

Observation on the Chuck Woolery thing:

Lenin was ancestrally Jewish on his mother’s side and likely it was never discussed because of the implications in the cultural milieu. He was raised Russian Orthodox and at one point he was in a seminary. Karl Marx was ancestrally Jewish on his father’s side, but raised in a household that had converted to Lutheranism.

So either Chuck is stupid or Chuck is claiming there’s some kind of ephemeral “Jewish” quality that persists (in the form of Communism) across generations. My money’s on the gif of the kid saying “Why not both?”

Thing is, this is an example of systemic antisemitism regardless of intentions. It hearkens all the way back to the mistrust of conversos in Spain (and likely even before that, but my knowledge is not comprehensive), but more explicitly echoes the reasoning used by the Tsarist Russians and the German National Socialists.

In short: this is a claim made by garbage people, for garbage reasons, with garbage evidence. That is all.

Trump is under the mistaken impression that we’re the only game in town, and that everyone has to do what we want. This is a misreading* of the US as The Indispensable Country. It doesn’t mean other countries can’t get along without us. It means if other countries can’t depend on us, it’s worse for everyone.

Thing is, he probably did “just realize it.”

Lots of folks are swimming in a pool of hog-piss information where they’re no necessarily presented with a notion outright, but are prodded toward that concept by precursor notions.

For example, wingnuts are primed for anti-Semitism by their sampling of conspiracy logic that hearkens back to the Elders of Zion, but also by the long arc of supersessionism and the notion the Jews just ain’t quite right, and also by the trend of racializing “Communism” as a kind of twofer damnation-by-association. There’s probably other things that are proc-ing them that I can’t think of right now.

ETA: This is what’s been building for years. Conspiracy logic always uses the same components, and most of those components are harvested from a limited number of ur-conspiracy theories. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is one of those texts that everybody samples, or samples indirectly. With the immense access to information in this age, conspiracy idiots are doing pattern recognition between the current soft-focused and coded conspiracy talk of the wingnuts (that want a veneer of “respectability) and the hard-core racist/anti-semitic materials of the past.

The thing about conspiracy logic is that it never stops, because it’s an all-encompassing explanation of why the believers are (1) special and wise; (2) failing because of sinister forces, not their flaws; (3) not needing to self-reflect or be skeptical of their own worldview.

The direct result is that conspiracies grow to cover the insecurities and failings of the promulgators. This can be seen institutionally in the USSR and Nazi Germany, but also in individual conspiracy believers, from cult leaders like Jim Jones to “theorists” like David Icke, to end-users (like some of the people who’ve been booted from here).

This is a big part of the phenomenon of “crank magnetism.”

And Pelosi didn’t lose the Rust Belt. Racism did.

Also, consider that all of the districts with races were areas that are normally very conservative, and not part of the Rust Belt.

With all due respect for Krystal Ball, she managed to get a whole 34.78% of the vote against the Republican incumbent while running as an ultra-liberal in a conservative district.

Can I suggest a new law? The number of degrees of lawyering is directly proportional to the amount of shit the original lawyer is in.

Call it Trumps law of increasing BS

A lawyer needing a lawyer to protect himself against other lawyers. That’s lawyer cubed.

A fourth wall break within another fourth wall. That’s 16 walls. /Deadpool.

I’m outraged at her being stupid enough to hand fascists a propaganda victory. It’s such extreme stupidity, in fact, as to be virtually indistinguishable from ratfucking malice.

If nothing else, everyone should know that only GOPers (*cough* gianforte *cough*) are given a pass by the media for violence and suggestions thereof. Our side has nothing whatsoever to gain from this. And if you want to make a “beheading” joke re trump, this is the way to do it:

I go away for a few hours, and Kathy Griffin is trending.

She’s not dead (usually what one thinks when someone you aren’t thinking about suddenly starts trending in news/twitter), but she’s tweeted/posted an image with “Trump’s severed head.”

Seriously, what the fuck was she thinking.

Not edgy. Not funny. Not even rationally related to anything other than being so pissed at Trump that you’ll go and do something that ultimately benefits Trump and his idiot supporters because you’ve provided him “proof” Democrats are “evil” or some other such nonsense.

Trump and his idiot supporters will be making hay of that nonsense from now until evermore.

And why? Because it deflects attention from what Trump’s done, is doing, and will continue doing. All these sanctimonious right wingers who are now castigating and deflecting attention on to Griffin had no problem when other right wingers were busy putting Obama effigies in a noose, putting Democrats in cross hairs, etc.

Not helpful is the least objectionable way of putting this. Seriously fucked up is

Yeah. Just in case you were thinking the Jews weren’t gonna be in the crosshairs of fascism this time around, that it was gonna be the Muslims’ turn in the barrel.

It’s the whole “genetically” Jewish vs. Jewish religious belief. Chuck is going the genetic route, not the religious one. So to him, Marx and Lenin could be Benedictine monks, but they’d still be “racially” Jewish.

Two days ago, I was walking to work, and I saw a lizard on a telephone pole. It leapt onto a rock, then a big hunk of wood. It was striking, because it was beautifully marked in brown and black, instead of the usual several shades of brown. I crouched down and said, ‘Hi buddy. Where’s your blue? Show me your blue.’ And it puffed up and had bright blue showing on its underside and chin. I marveled and proceeded to the shop.

I got to listen to Spicer’s presser - I was surprised it lasted as long as it did, as someone (female) called him out on the anonymous sources bullshit, asking, “Why is the anonymous source for Fox news credible and the one for WaPo isn’t?” - Fuckin’ Spicer pretty much just said “Because it is” or “I don’t want to talk about that” or something to that effect.

How great would it have been if his answer was something along the lines of “because we know who the anonymous sources to Fox News are.”

Right.

And in my experience, when wingnuts use it, it’s when one of them has done the ‘far worse’ thing. You know, like “Okay, so a GOP Congressman compared the Obama Administration to Nazi Germany. They’ve done this before, shooting down a spin stabilized simulated warhead with a transponder strapped on board that feeds the targeting system a constant stream of early launch telemetry is NOT indicative of real world conditions. All North Korea has to do to defeat this system is create a warhead with a small thruster that jags while approaching apogee and isn’t spin stabilized, just tumbling erratically on re-entry. When you no longer care about pin point precision in your offensive missile it gets massively more difficult for the other side to shoot it down.

Yeah, I was going to say, you just go to straight silica at that point. The downside is trying to get the damn thing made in the first place.

Just had the son of my contractor knock on my front door with a rock he found, while digging around my pond, that he had serious questions about, and he knows that I started off lo these many many years ago as a geology major, specializing in Appalachia…

He was so excited because it was a new rock find for him.

Best I could tell him for the moment was that it was siltstone/mudstone with pyrite and silica sand-sized crystals and the black matrix just dissolves away in water, most probably from a Devonian/Marcellus Formation.

But I have a mostly washed chunk that is drying in the sun on my kitchen window sill, so he is waiting impatiently for more information (and has another rock for me to examine).

This is actually quite fun.

Well, kinda/sorta/sometimes: FWIW, E2 dumped all over Trump during the campaign and the election: but, AFAICR, once he won (Trump, not Erickson), Erick has been blowing hot and cold on The Donald: hot when there’s libruls to be bashed, or “PC” to be mocked: cold when it comes to Trump’s actual skills at governing (i.e. Absolute FAIL).

Didnt USAA claim that they did not buy ad time on opinion shows, and that advertising on Hannity was an oversight?

If it’s an oversight it’s one they’ve also been making on MSNBC for months.

Agh why? Hannity doesn’t give two shits about the military.

That’s not how advertising works. Hannity delivers an audience who buy products sold by USAA like professional golf delivers an audience who buy ED and prostate drugs.

Why yes, yes they did.

USAA said Thursday it has a policy not to advertise on any opinion-based programing.

“There was an error which led to our ads running during certain opinion-based programs, and as soon as that was discovered, the error was corrected,” the San Antonio, Texas-based company said. “We will continually review our ad placements to ensure we are consistent with our policy.”

There will never be efficient interception of ICBMs until efficient directed energy weapons come into existence. Too fast and too many variables otherwise. Only moving at or near light speed will it be possible to knock them down with near 100% probability. Anything less means cities burn.

Something along the lines of Hammer’s Slammer’s powerguns.

umm… there is a huge range between 7km/s of an average icbm and ~300000Km/s of light. If you had something that could move at a fraction of one percent of the speed of light and still maneuver it would be relatively easy to intercept. That being said the challenges of that would seem to be a lot greater than just using lasers.

re: #125 Interesting Times

Came across something via FB today and I feel you’re in an especially good position to comment on it (though others are more than welcome to weigh in). Maybe I’m misinterpreting, but to me, it feels like “both-siderism” and demanding the tolerant be tolerant of intolerance (I mean, I agree with the general premise that you shouldn’t dehumanize others - that’s a no-brainer - but is that automatically what “contempt” is, under all circumstances…?)

Short answer: The commentator you cite is concern-trolling. Long answer, behind the privacy bar, because long.

According to Dim Jim, the nutter was tossed out of the “free speech” event that pictures of him wearing Old Glory were taken at. Claims the police were called about him, but they just let him go…despite reports elsewhere that they confiscated a bat from him.

Since there’s no allegations that he was actually using the bat or doing anything of an illegal nature, it’s the traditional “The police saw a dangerous criminal and let him go!” bit.

Enabling wage theft is the entire point of the status quo on immigration.

Speaking of wage theft, the GOP is going balls to the wall to support it.

You have to wade all the way to Page 403 of the 589-page Financial Choice Act to find a one-sentence provision that obliterates current efforts to bring fairness and responsibility to payday lenders and similar merchants of never-ending debt.

Section 733 of the bill, which could come up for a vote by the full House of Representatives as soon as this week, declares that federal authorities “may not exercise any rulemaking, enforcement or other authority with respect to payday loans, vehicle title loans or other similar loans.”

With that one line, Republican lawmakers have declared their willingness to allow people facing financial difficulties to be at the mercy of predatory lending practices that typically involve annual interest rates approaching 400%.

Someone brings me a rock and I tell them “that’s a rock.”

I promised my committee members I’d never actually try to pass myself off as a real geologist in that sense.

When you say morning/night/afternoon shifts, I assume we’re talking about PST… the most important of the time zones?

No. Mythical Mountain Time Zone, where we have unicorns and ponies for everyone. /s

OT to divert attention from the flamefest that flamed out: I went to the VA today for an appointment. The (one) paved highway between here and Sidney was under construction for about twenty miles. US-30 in Sidney is also under construction, making me late for my appointment.

They let that slide. Coming home, I decided the gravel roads would be a better choice, and came home that way.

Atop an old telegraph pole along what used to be US-385 before they put in the paved highway to the west, was a brand-new Stetson hat.

Couldn’t figure out why someone would put a Stetson hat on top of a telegraph pole. (If someone took it off for some reason working the ranch along the old highway, it would have been far too high to reach.)

Did it blow up there in the wind? Is someone playing an expensive prank? Did a telegraph worker installing a new telegraph system leave his hat behind? Inquiring minds want to know.

Life in the very slow lane. Y’all have to deal with things like traffic lights and six-lane wide freeways while we get to ponder the mysteries of Stetson hats on telegraph poles.

I promised my committee members I’d never actually try to pass myself off as a real geologist in that sense.

We have so many different kinds of really cool rocks here in Appalachia. I would never ever tell someone “that’s a rock”. Especially if it looks like a potato and it’s actually a geode.

Ah, but see, I have very little (read: no) training in mineral identification.

I tried to actively avoid minerals, actually. Minerals meant crystals which is kind of not what the goal is when you’re making glass.

So my rock identification skills are about the same as any average person’s, despite my supposed area of expertise. Now if you want to talk about how the temperature affects the structure of a aluminosilicate melt, that’s a different conversation…

“…is dead. The last starfighter is dead!” Oh, Zur, you!

You know, The Last Starfighter may seem pretty 80s cheesy now, but they got some things right:

A) It wasn’t a straight-up Star Trek or Star Wars clone. Alex’s story in TLS does have quite a bit in common with Luke’s story in ST:ANH, but that type of hero story’s been told since time immemorial. The twist was in how Centauri found and recruited Alex, via a cultural icon that was very much in the public’s consciousness at the time (and still is): a video game.

B) A pretty good cast. Lance Guest, Robert Preston (The Music Man himself), and Dan O’Herlihy (who would later become much more recognizable to 80s movies fans as the Old Man in Robocop and Robocop 2) were fantastic and just clicked together as Alex, Centari, and Grig respectively, IMO, and the rest of the cast was pretty solid. Hell, it was also one of the first movies that Wil Wheaton would have been in (a brief role as Alex’s brother Louis’ friend) before his breakout in Stand By Me and iconic stint in ST:TNG, had his scenes not been left on the editing room floor.

C) It was one of the first motion pictures to make heavy use of what we now know as CGI:

The Last Starfighter is one of the earliest films to make extensive use of computer graphics for its special effects. In place of physical models, 3D rendered models were used to depict space ships and many other objects. The Gunstar and other spaceships were the design of artist Ron Cobb, who also worked on Alien, Star Wars and Conan the Barbarian.

The computer graphics for the film were rendered by Digital Productions on a Cray X-MP supercomputer. The company created 27 minutes of effects for the film. This was considered an enormous amount of computer generated imagery at the time.[3] For the 300 scenes containing computer graphics in the film, each frame of the animation contained an average of 250,000 polygons, and had a resolution of 3000 × 5000 36-bit pixels. Digital Productions estimated that using computer animation required only half the time, and one half to one third the cost of traditional special effects. The result was a cost of $14 million for a film that made about $21 million at the box office.[3]

Not all special effects in the film were done with computer animation. The depiction of the Beta unit before it had taken Alex’s form was a practical effect, created out of materials and produced on-set. The Starcar created by Gene Winfield and driven by Centauri was also a real prop.[4]

Often was the NG and Army Reserve—it depends greatly on the force mix needed and the skills in the unit. A large part of the medic capability, for instance, is deliberately kept in the Reserve. That was a part of the Powell Doctrine—didn’t have the intended effect.

399
The Ghost of Senator Incitatus  May 30, 2017 • 4:34:33pm

There’s no point in doing a calculation about the Kathy Griffin thing: it will be pinned to everyone “liberal” because the right does not operate in good faith. There’s no war of perception going on, and the standard is intentionally a double standard.

The same is true of the “both-siders”: they are actively seeking to confirm their position, and there will always be something. Mostly because you cannot make a person see what their livelihood requires them to not see. The last “both sides” thinkpiece I read compared swearing to physically assaulting a reporter. Again, there isn’t really a winnable perception war.

Instead it should be criticized on its own terms. It’s not clever or good. It’s shocking, but clearly hasn’t thought about the larger interaction between the image and say, any given ISIS execution. Regardless of the present occupant, it’s bad form to use violent imagery as part of a political discussion. There’s also just plain lame “I am so edgy” aspect of the image.

Somebody somewhere (can’t remember) posted what were supposedly his facebook rants—if real, was a Bernie primary guy, hated Hillary and Trump, then became a Trump supporter. But the Bernie love didn’t sound right even when it was up, as the guy was a total anti-semite and while praising Bernie was ranting against things Bernie said.

My guess was that the Bernie love was just noise to get attention and the guy was/is just a hateful asshole emboldened by the Trumpian order of things.

re: #417 Backwoods_Sleuth

Pretty sure Kushner sold his interest in the Observer right after the election. He’s no longer listed as publisher on their masthead.

It was telling, in a very Kushner way, to see the way the Observer print edition was shut down so abruptly after the yam won. I had been a print subscriber for a very long time, going back to before Kushner bought the paper, and always enjoyed the insight it provided into a very different social stratum from the one in which I live.

So what happened to us loyal subscribers? The paper just… stopped coming. No announcement, no offer of a refund for paid-up subscriptions, no letter to subscribers. Just… nothing.

Which is about as much as I expect from Kushner.

re: #424 Interesting Times

Remember this list that ggt posted the other day? The first one describes DF to a T - I remember the frightening “ends justify the means” authoritarian comments he’d always make (and how he said that, at the time of the American Revolution, he would’ve been a loyalist). So it’s only that, as the GOP goes full fascist, he’s one to dutifully follow :/

I actually missed that. I definitely do remember that though especially the Revolution comment. I found that amazing but in a way refreshingly honest too.

well, I certainly don’t condone what Griffin did, and while it will give the both siders plenty of ammo (because they never forget a slight, real or made up) she is allowed to express herself, no matter how inartfully or reprehensible it may be. Although I do believe (imho) showing the decapitated head of the President (no matter of my feelings for him) is something we can all do without. It does speak to the seething anger that most of remaining sane souls are experiencing but the “other side” won’t see it that way. They’ll see it as justification for all of the shit that they’ve been pulling for the last decade, no matter that “our” spokesperson happens to be a D-List comedienne and we’re hearing threats from actual GOP legislators because there’s no equivalence like false equivalence.

At this point, it won’t fucking matter because we’re still trying to hold the line about standards and protocols and ethics and the GOP and their followers are playing Calvinball and will gladly use our rules and tools against if it suits their purpose.

Hecuba's daughter  May 30, 2017 • 5:19:20pm

The whole Trump circus and the damage it is inflicting on this country has been very depressing to many of us. It looks at though the US is now in decline. Then I recall those years in the 1980’s when experts were advising us that Japan will be the new world leader; that we couldn’t compete with their economic model.

Perhaps Trump could turn out to be a blessing in disguise: if Hillary had been elected, the House would still be in Republican hands; perhaps the Senate might have have shifted but probably. All those Congressmen who now ignore Trump’s misdeeds would be persecuting Hillary on one false charge after another. Maybe the result will be that this interlude will be a wakeup call to the American public and the Democrats will actually succeed in taking over the House in 2018.

Nah —- not likely to happen. But one can dream

I know because I sat down to watch my recording of it an hour ago AND NOTHING WAS RECORDED!

Dammit! I watch three lousy shows a WEEK and AMC decides to bag one of them.

At the end of every episode, Mrs. FBW sighs with dismay that we have to wait another week.

It doesn’t help that we didn’t watch Breaking Bad until 2 years after it concluded, so we could burn through a minimum of 3 episodes a night, with no commercials -

“Should we watch another one?”

“What time is it?”

“Not quite 11:00.”

“Aw, fuck it. Fire it up!”

I just spent 3 minutes locked to the top of this page because of autoplay Arby’s ads. I can’t read more than 10 comments before I get dragged back to the top. This site has become unreadable. I got dragged to the top 3 times while trying to write this. These Arby’s ads have been doing this for almost a week now and it totally sucks.

You seem to get those ads a lot. Have you cleaned out your cache, cookies and browsing history? You might try that, because of all of the returns I’m thinking you have a cookie or a strong past history reference in the cache that is causing those to keep coming.

Another thing. Hover over the ads and look at the link. If it is the same all the time, put the link and web address into your blocked sites folder in your anti-virus program. Maybe email the link to Charles too.

And don’t go to any Arby’s related anything on the web. Maybe you keep picking up the reference from some other site. Be aware of where you might be seeing Arby’s stuff online.

Just trying to help.

Merkel’s asking for it? Gee, I seem to recall somebody saying Hillary would be the Angela Merkel of the US, if we elected her.

What the fuck is wrong with some people, anyway. Denied human contact as infants? Raised by wolves? Ate too many Hostess Baking products growing up?

Reading Ayn Rand and being unable to out-grow it?

Oh, dammit. At times, I kinda missed DF around here; it’s always good to have voices from across the spectrum, because groupthink is a characteristic of incurious minds and leads to gigantic blind spots.

But Merkel was “asking for it” ???

No.

Just. No.

That’s a vile echo of the uppity woman asking for sexual assault for daring to defy the whims of an egotistical male.

I felt the same about DF (and KT) because it’s too easy to be in a bubble when all you hear are those who share your views. But it’s sad to see how he’s gone off the deep end and finds it more comfortable to live in the Trump bubble. I have always believed that one of the main reasons Hillary did not get sufficient votes in certain states was the endemic sexism of blue collar workers and non-college educated, as well as fundamentalists and evangelicals.

re: #483 GlutenFreeJesus

I am not bothsiderisming this. Kathy did something stupid.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply you were. I just note that no amount of apology is going to get Ms. Griffith out of this. While the apology is sincere and she doesn’t try to shift blame or accuse others of being too sensitive, the “I stepped over the line” bit will not satisfy anyone.

She saw the line, and thought “I know! An ISIS parody would be funny!” She deliberately crossed the line. It was stunningly stupid. “I’m a comedienne and I make mistakes all the time” is still an excuse.

I accept her apology. She is now still damaged goods for Al Franken (and Democrats in general). She did this to herself. The rest of us will pay for that. (It’s already on Drudge, expect it to be on FOX as soon as they get the readout from the wingnut-o-sphere.)

One way or another this will kill him, though he may drag down millions with him. One way or another, he knows he has stepped off a cliff, pronounced himself king of the air, and is in freefall. Ah, but it’s already an article of wingnut faith being rapidly propagated across the Wingnutosphere that liberals are not condemning Ms. Griffith. When it hits FOX News (without mention of her apology), tens of millions of FOX viewers will only hear that she did this, not that she took responsibility for a shockingly bad judgement call of “comedy” and apologised for it.

By tonight, wingnuts will be all over social media saying “liberals support violence too” because they will have been told no liberals condemned her stunningly bad image.

By tomorrow, even in places like mine with no cell service and Internet I’ll be hearing about it from every person in town I meet. No amount of refutation will matter from me, because they don’t have Internet service to see that apology, just Christian hate radio and FOX News radio and television.

Happy, I just read this New Yorker article about the heroin epidiemic in West Virginia, since my home county (Beaver) borders on West Virginia I’ve always had a love for the place ever since and it breaks my heart to see how they have turned so deep red while heroin is running wild and unchecked.

newyorker.com

West Virginia has the highest overdose death rate in the country, and heroin has devastated the state’s Eastern Panhandle, which includes Hedgesville and the larger town of Martinsburg. Like the vast majority of residents there, nearly all the addicts are white, were born in the area, and have modest incomes. Because they can’t be dismissed as outsiders, some locals view them with empathy. Other residents regard addicts as community embarrassments. Many people in the Panhandle have embraced the idea of addiction as a disease, but a vocal cohort dismisses this as a fantasy disseminated by urban liberals.

When white folks have drug problems, people start paying atteion. When it’s minorities, we dismiss em as addicts. WE should be trying to help all addicts regardless of their race or socioeconomic sattus. This is a very personal issue for me.
