That’s some great neo-blue-eyed soul right there. As a 50-something wannabe rocker, it warms my heart to see the prior generation still kicking ass.

re: #437 scottslemmons

DC had serious hits with Nolan’s Batman movies, and decided that was the way to have a hit comic book movie — dark colors, grimdark attitude, very little humor. That may work for Batman, but it’s less effective for a character who’s supposed to be sunny and optimistic, like Superman.

Well, the thing is that the Nolan films did for the Batman film franchise what its cultural predecessors The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke did for the comics: It resurrected the character from his slide into the depths of campiness. The problem is that, like DC and Marvel leaned too heavily on the “dark and gritty” atmosphere those comics did and defined an entire “Age” of comics by them, DC’s working under the impression that what made the Nolan films successfully was people wanting to see “dark and gritty” films.

Finally stating the obvious: False, multiply debunked, conspiracy theories are LIES that vilify and endanger innocent people. It is amazing that so many “Christians” condemn themselves by refusing to recognize this simple truth. It is one of the most obvious proofs that the politicized evangelical movement is not only morally bankrupt, but utterly depraved.
Christianity Today:Christians, Repent (Yes, Repent) of Spreading Conspiracy Theories and Fake News—It’s Bearing False Witness

Try this instead: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Mentions Pizzagate and Seth Rich specifically, but I would broaden it to include creationism itself, since that superstition crucially depends on the existence of a centuries old global conspiracy of suppression among scientists.

Incidentally, this may all seem obvious to us, but it is a very gutsy call for author Ed Stetzer, since it essentially targets his boss as well as many of the boss’s contributors.

Ed Stetzer holds the Billy Graham Distinguished Chair of Church, Mission, and Evangelism at Wheaton College, is Executive Director of the Billy Graham Center for Evangelism, and publishes church leadership resources through Mission Group.

The funny thing about the Batman films is that the Tim Burton films from the 80s were actually the Nolan films of their day, dark and gritty when the last time most people had seen Batman was the Adam West series from the 60s. A Joker that killed people, Gotham depicted as a hive of scum and villainy, Bruce Wayne as a reclusive loner who depicted himself as an eccentric playboy. We see them as tame compared to today, but back then that was a major shock to people who’d grown up seeing Batman on TV running down the street with a smoking bomb.

Todd seems like a really really good guy.

I think Todd is one of these people who is impossibly gifted in one area (namely all aspects of music) and nearly clueless when it comes to just about everything else.

He does not have the reputation of being a really good guy in the concert business. They readily put up with him when his name on the marquee automatically sold 1500+ tickets, but now that is no longer the case he has problems playing in some parts of the country.

Just for context, I have been a fan for more than 30 years & seen him about 25 times…I also know a couple of people involved in concert promotion.

I bought & am enjoying the new album, but I am passing on his tour. The setlist (which is totally static) is 90% made up of his very hit and miss 21st century output. Later this summer he is playing on a package tour with the bogus version of Yes (that doesn’t include Jon Anderson). I shudder to imagine what prog rock fans are going to make of his very non-prog rock set.

OFFS. And DWS seriously did stupid shit like that… Calling the opposing counsel? Gah.

It is fairly easy to spoof a caller ID number. (I get calls from telemarketers all the time with alleged local telephone numbers. Makes it pretty easy to ignore them since I live in a town with just over 100 people.)

Just because the number is DWS’s number (and there is no reason to believe a lawyer is being truthful in a letter), does not mean the call came from DWS’s office.

Well, Nicholson’s was basically he and Burton cribbing heavily from The Killing Joke, just with less effort spent delving into the Joker’s psyche and more him being a homicidal maniac. And Ledger cribbed from Nicholson, but also mixed in a lot of the 90s era Joker development with the whole multiple choice background and sociopathic anarchy.

Today I read a mystery novel by a writer I’ve never heard of, Tom Bouman, a book called Dry Bones in the Valley, set in a tiny township in the Marcellus Shale country of Pennsylvania. I highly recommend it. A great voice. But I mention it for one sentence: “”Poor people aren’t thin anymore, like when I was a kid; now they’re fat on the cheap food feeding the ghost of the American dream.”

The observation isn’t original or particularly striking except for the last clause: “feeding the ghost of the American dream.” Isn’t that what we see and hear around us every day, what we’ve seen and heard now for decades from these sickening bastards, what we see and hear now daily from the flaming anal clown in the Oval Office and his accomplices?

Hate to sound so bummerish, but some days it’s just like “Houston, New York, LA, Seattle, Chicago, all points in between, we have a fucking problem.”

Phorusrhacos grew up to 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) tall and weighed approximately 130 kilograms (290 lb).[1] They had enormous skulls up to sixty centimeters long, armed with powerful, hook-tipped beaks. The structure of the beak and the large claws on the toes show that they were carnivorous.

I would revise that to “conservative” Americans. This white American ain’t pinin’ for the old days of Jim Crow and suppression of women and minorities.

Of note, you can slice up a number of ways Donald Trump was put over the top in the election: One was white women went all-in on him.

The ones I remember him most are his guest stars on Family Guy (where he appeared as himself) and Fairly OddParents (where he appeared as the obviously named Catman). As I said, he has no problems parodying himself, and he’s quite funny, to boot.

I realize that I was and never will be the target audience for Fairly OddParents, but OMG, that show is like eating a crushed glass hoagie while having elephants in cleats rumba on your privates.

Two reasons:
1) The characters spoke in two levels: shrill and and shriller.
2) I hate that every character’s ears were drawn on their necks.

In the deep south there is a huge body of folklore built around family stories, essentially legends, of the alleged atrocities committed on Sherman’s March. I saw a really interesting study of this that attempted to correlate these stories with Sherman’s actual progress through the region. It considered only the stories that could be identified with a specific documented place (“grandpappy’s farm outside Clinchfield”). It found that many of the claims involved locales that were up to 200 miles from Sherman’s documented line of march, and that the average deviation was over 60 miles. Now, Sherman’s foragers did occasionally range that far, but 60 miles as an average is absurd.

Dunno if this has been posted - Germany’s Rock Am Ring Festival is evacuated after ‘concrete’ terror threat.

One of the biggest music festivals in Germany has been shut down after a ‘concrete’ terror threat.

Rock am Ring was cancelled on its opening night and thousands of festival-goers were told to leave the site in Nürburg in a ‘calm and controlled manner’.

Some 92,500 three-day tickets were sold for the festival, which was due to run from Friday until Sunday.

The dpa news agency reported that the festival was cleared out on its opening night after Koblenz police said they had received information of a ‘concrete threat’.
The cancellation was announced on the Rock am Ring Facebook page.

A spokesman said: ‘Due to a terrorist threat the police have advised us to interrupt the festival.

‘We ask all festival visitors to leave the festival site in a calm and controlled manner towards the exits and camping grounds.

‘We have to support the police investigations.’

Bear in mind, most of our conservatives where I gew up are not the good old boys but rather transplants themselves or children of them like my parents. Frontier Airlines takes the heat off United:

cbsnews.com

TAMPA, Fla. — A legally blind man says an airline refused to allow him to board a flight with his 18-month-old granddaughter.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Kliphton Miller tried to board a Frontier flight from Tampa to Las Vegas with the child on May 23.

The 44-year-old Miller asked for help getting on the plane once he reached his gate. That’s when airline employees began to question his ability to watch over the young child during the trip, according to Miller.

“I frequently fly with my granddaughter on other airlines and had flown on Frontier with her before too, but they still denied me access,” Miller told the newspaper. “I was denied because I am blind. They told me I was a liability.”

Who the fuck gives a shit if it’s “patriotic” enough?! THAT’S NOT THE POINT OF A MOVIE!!! It’s good entertainment, it tells a story, and in this case, it’s about a powerful woman. Why does it have to be about white male egos?!

re: #114 Shiplord Kirel

In the deep south there is a huge body of folklore built around family stories, essentially legends, of the alleged atrocities committed on Sherman’s March. I saw a really interesting study of this that attempted to correlate these stories with Sherman’s actual progress through the region. It considered only the stories that could be identified with a specific documented place (“grandpappy’s farm outside Clinchfield”). It found that many of the claims involved locales that were up to 200 miles from Sherman’s documented line of march, and that the average deviation was over 60 miles.

There is a huge body of folklore of this kind promulgated every time it offers a path to power. Look at the “spitting image” pushed by the Nixon crims, about how returning Vietnam vets were subject to this huge and widespread abuse. Documentation? Zero.

People want to believe stuff. When I was a kid, you could find lots of codgers who claimed to have seen Babe Ruth “call his shot” on a home run, although not a single account from the time even mentioned such a thing.

I’m not the reincarnation of Joseph Campbell (that and he was alive at the same time I was, but you never saw us in the same room together), but as best as I can tell, legends, whether secular or religious, are designed to make “our team look good and the other teams bad.”

How will the Chicago Cubs ever get along with their legendary slogan “the lovable losers?”

George Washington did not cut down a cherry tree then admit it. That anecdote has no evidence to support it, but it makes “our team” feel good (our first president was honest).

Legendary stories pop up about just about everything.

Carried over from the last thread:

It is fairly easy to spoof a caller ID number. (I get calls from telemarketers all the time with alleged local telephone numbers. Makes it pretty easy to ignore them since I live in a town with just over 100 people.)

Just because the number is DWS’s number (and there is no reason to believe a lawyer is being truthful in a letter), does not mean the call came from DWS’s office.

I’m glad to read that (and what other’s have said). That makes me feel better. I don’t like or dislike DWS. But that utter stupidity would have changed my opinion to be sure.

When I was working on-site for my current client, the big boss offered to treat myself and the rest of my co-workers to lunch. My co-workers being Indian, they naturally chose an Indian buffet. They were sitting at one end of the table, laughing and having a grand time. Myself and a couple of other cow-orkers were in the middle, enjoying the spicy food, but laboring a little bit. The boss, on the other hand, was sitting at the far end of the table, sweating bullets, completely in over his head with even the mildest entrees. It was amusing, to me anyway.

One thing to look into may be Bitesquad or similar. I have had dishes, such as Ethiopian, delivered to my office, which I then take home for dinner. I am fortunate in that the Twin Cities has a glut of ethnic diversity, from which I can choose a rich palate of food.

The only ethnic food restaurants we have around here are American greasy spoon, Mexican (a couple Mexican restaurants within sixty miles, run by Mexican immigrants or descendants), and a couple Chinese restaurants (one run by Chinese immigrants and one by Cambodian immigrants).

Mr. C’s inability to eat gluten without pain has really put a dent in our visiting ethnic (or any other) restaurants. It’s possible, but not necessarily easy… On the other hand, we have any number of ethnic grocery stores and the internet provides recipes.

Which brings up the question, has anyone here ever cooked with corn smut, aka huitlacoche? It was mentioned on a program the other evening and Mr. C. and I sort of looked at each other and said we really ought to try that.

She comes from the same tiny town in Michigan I do. (Funny how that works.) She ran into someone at the airport complaining that they liked coming to Chicago because that person lived in a small town (200,000 people). My mother noted our hometown (less than 200 people). He couldn’t imagine a town that small.

But interstate compacts require the consent of Congress.

True. However, that still doesn’t prevent states such as Massachusetts or California from agreeing to the principals in the Climate Accord and simply following them.

An Interstate Compact (such as the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact, an agreement entered into to try to control cratering gasoline prices in 1935) is a framework of agreements intended to be binding law on the states in the compact.

A climate compact between states that want to enter it doesn’t have to be binding on those states - it is a voluntary agreement and not subject to Congressional approval.

Lots of little old men who sit in parks and play dominos have people murdered for various reasons. Just because they are neither big or scary, they are not thugs? Nope. Trump is as much a thug as a mob capo or a street hood. That he has others do his work only makes him that much more dangerous. Good killers never look the part. Trump is a thug. Here’s what thugs do.

We did some amazing high cuisine Mexican food in Mexico City. Oh man, I still remember that meal and it’s coming up on ten years.

A lot of the Mexican around here is either taquerias or orange cheese, but there’s a few places starting to break the mold. A lot of them tend to veer into fusion, though.

Diana Kennedy. She taught us that Mexican cuisine is definitely not Taco Bell. Or even Tex-Mex. Or even high New Mexico green chile sauce stuff. Or any of that. Any more than Cajun food is all about jambalaya and crawfish pie.

In fairness, the probability that none of them know WW’s origin story is approaching certainty. They probably know the costume an so that triggers a “Murka fuck yeah” response. I can understand why President Johnson felt the necessity to try and reintegrate the rebelling states quickly.

However, in hindsight I think not enough was done.

True, bigotry was rampant in the North also. But the so called “radicals” in the South, the abolitionists, really ought to have been more actively promoted by the Johnson administration as the future of the South. I would have even gone as far as opening up the entire South as a single un-Stated territory, and forced new States to form.

Johnson since we were talking about Batman earlier lived long enough to become the villain. His actions were heroic during the Civil War even if he was an unapologetic racist. But he failed during reconstruction for the reasons you state.

There was a lot of bigotry in the North, that made the abolition movement “radical” even in the North. The thing is, the radicals in the North prevailed politically, yet hardly were a revisioning of America.

Slavery is America’s first and major sin. Assuming we only encumber the US to what happened after 1776 and not the prior colonialism.

That our current President not only is ignorant of this but actively courts revisionists and bigots himself is I think the worse thing that has happened in American politics in my lifetime.

I imagine if the Union had abolished the states (especially the original colonial states) and made them unorganised territory, it would have been rebellion round Deux.

I’m not a fan of the death penalty, but open rebellion in arms against the government is treason. Drag out a few thousand leaders of the Confederacy for trials (and if found guilty) execution might have had an affect as well.

This, this, one billion times.

Grant Morrison wrote a book called “Supergods,” a combination of autobiography and history of superheroes. One of the big takeaways I got from it was that you can do grim-and-gritty superheroes and make ‘em work — “Watchmen” and “The Dark Knight Returns” are legitimately great comics — but superheroes work best as aspirational works, where the characters are optimistic, heroic, and inspire others, and you have to go back to that model eventually or the stories fall to pieces. Marvel’s films get that; DC’s films, so far, haven’t.

Critics argued that the new questions would be overly burdensome, lead to long delays in processing and discourage international students and scientists from coming to the United States.

Under the new procedures, consular officials can request all prior passport numbers, five years’ worth of social media handles, email addresses and phone numbers and 15 years of biographical information including addresses, employment and travel history.

It will always be the fault of liberals, because that’s who they need to be at fault, because the axiom is “liberals are always the bad guys.” This is what their cultural basis (that keeps getting them elected) runs on: constant re-assertion of the inherent wrongness and Wrongness of the other side.

Or shorter: It’s projection, always.

So the amazing new level of projection is that every time Trump talks about how the US isn’t taken seriously by others, yadda yadda…it’s all basically a story about how he feels about how he’s seen by everybody else.

Let me tell you how much time and energy I am going to be putting into discussing this incident, parsing it for intent and defending Bill Maher from the inevitable shit storm he is going to face from both sides:

None. At all.

re: #19 klys (maker of Silmarils)

You can get the entire 1960s series on Blu-ray now and I’m thinking I’m going to ask for it for Christmas.

I am clearly not DC’s target audience with the whole grim-dark thing.

Have you watched any of the DC TV series? The darkest is Gotham, but it borders on self-parody sometimes. Supergirl is the most light-hearted, and it has a Superman based on the Christopher Reeve model, who makes occasional appearances.

I’m probably not their target audience, being an old, but I don’t care.

I haven’t. I’m really not a TV person. When I collect show recommendations it ends up being for mr. klys because he watches some. He did watch Gotham but was more ambivalent about it, I think.

Nuclear waste, coal ash, and smog are totally natural too. But I doubt this smug prick would partake in any of them.

It is theatre, that’s a good description.

Coal ash isn’t regulated. KCP&L is contracted to use the waste ash from the Iatan plant to fill in limestone bluffs that have development on top. I’m sure that will be alright.

re: #328 scottslemmons

This, this, one billion times.

Grant Morrison wrote a book called “Supergods,” a combination of autobiography and history of superheroes. One of the big takeaways I got from it was that you can do grim-and-gritty superheroes and make ‘em work — “Watchmen” and “The Dark Knight Returns” are legitimately great comics — but superheroes work best as aspirational works, where the characters are optimistic, heroic, and inspire others, and you have to go back to that model eventually or the stories fall to pieces. Marvel’s films get that; DC’s films, so far, haven’t.

The thing about the DC TV universe is that even the darkest show - Arrow, BY FAR - is still largely about Oliver Queen’s redemption

Wait ‘til they find out the Green Lantern organization accepts aliens.

Humans are the minority, like a handful out of 3,600.

We should not hinder the growth potential of #coal, #oil, #nuclear, and other natural resources found in the U.S.

note that the sun also shines and the wind also blows across our fair land. But they cannot be as easily monopolized by a few corporations
