I saw this last night and cracked up. I love Dave Grohl, he’s too funny and very talented. He also directed a video for the Soundgarden song “Crooked Steps” which cracked me the hell up too. Next time Foo Fighters are in my part of the country I’m going to see them. I missed Chris Cornell and Soundgarden (and Audioslave), but life is too damned short. I don’t have little kids at home anymore, it’s about time I found other things to do besides “momming the place up” (to quote my son). I haven’t been to an actual concert in over 20 yrs. Enough of that shit.

I remember what it was I was thinking about your previous statements that the media outlets that are defending Trump are doing so to preserve their access. Remember during the beginning of the Iraq War, how it came out that some media outlets were essentially transmitting Baghdad propaganda so as to maintain access to Saddam? There was a lot of fallout over those revelations, but it seems the media still haven’t learned their lesson. The only difference is that now, apparently, it’s justified because it’s the American President and not a foreign tyrant; however, it’s a distinction without a difference, at this point, because Trump is effectively acting as a tyrant (or trying to). It’s no less reprehensible for them to publish his bullshit uncritically just to keep their place in the White House Press Corps. And for that matter, I’m not sure it’s that great of an honor to share that access with the likes of Alex Jones…

Wow Charles, the combination of your two posts really made me think back about how a President and his administration can influence someone in the media to put out stories that favor them and their decisions and then cite those media stories as facts.

Gives me flashbacks to Judith Miller and New York Times days.

re: #6 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

I’m over this “we need access” bullshit excuse. Why would you need access to a pack of lying sacks of shit? The answer is you don’t. Not if you’re an actual fucking journalist who knows how to investigate and research and cultivate sources. But that would mean these multi-millionaire assholes who read the news would have to work for something. Can’t have that.

This is how great nations fall and fall hard. We’re in deep shit here. Deep.

I may say, from personal experience, that when the well-over-60s get down to the mosh pit, we get treated very well, most recent right in front at a Devil Makes Three headline gig in Aptos. The rest of the bill, in order of appearance, being Barns Courtney, The Brothers Comatose, The Wood Brothers & Mavis Staples. Bill Kristol is, other than David Brooks, the demonstration of how the “pundit” class are utterly useless and divorced from their learned-ness inherent in their title.

What they actually are is tellers of just-so stories. Whatever happens, they re-frame it into a digestible narrative in which all sides are bad, and hippies are always wrong.

U.S. active duty or reserve duty military and their spouses or dependents, as well as National Guard members and veterans are able to get the following services for free if they fly Allegiant:

Up to three checked bags weighing less than 100 pounds each
One carry-on bag within Allegiant size limits
One pet in cabin
No charge for oversized checked bags
Free boarding pass printing at airport
Free seat assignments

To qualify for the offers, passengers must show military identification. Spouses and dependents of active duty or reserve military members do not have to be flying with a military member to qualify.

In addition to these perks, active military personnel will be given free priority boarding and will not be charged for changes or cancelations.

(I’d just be worried about the front of plane going missing like in the pic…)

stpaulbear  Jun 3, 2017 • 4:00:45pm

Another story that I pinched from Betty Cracker at Balloon Juice that she pinched from Michelle Goldberg at Slate:

Somehow there seems to be a lot less concern about the psychic shock inflicted upon the people who voted against Trump, who now know that his victory was assisted by a Russian intelligence operation and who watch, aghast, as Trump does everything he can to reward Russia for its help. Few pundits seem worried about Clinton voters’ trust in the rule of law when Trump blatantly ignores the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause… Indeed, polls show that between 43 percent and 48 percent of voters want Trump impeached. That’s a lot of alienated people! Shouldn’t we be anxious about their faith in our government’s legitimacy?

[snip]

The reason we don’t worry much about furious Clinton supporters is that no one’s afraid of them. They’re disproportionately female and don’t parade around with firearms or gather in torch-bearing mobs. They’re not going to blow up a federal building. The right-wing pundit Erick Erickson even argues that liberals must not really believe what they say about the Trump regime because they haven’t started an armed rebellion: “If the left really does believe the Republican Party is a criminal enterprise in league with the Russians, they’re either moral cowards without conviction in their beliefs or about to take up arms to defend their country.” Implicit in this—as well as in all the hand-wringing about what the pro-Trump minority might do if they’re thwarted—is the idea that only people capable of violence need be taken seriously. That, in and of itself, is a sign of a political culture in crisis…

Blind Frog Belly White  Jun 3, 2017 • 4:14:49pm

Hawaii Bro and SIL brought with them an heirloom. It’s a gold cameo ring, very worn. It’s the Smith family engagement ring. It goes to the George Smith in each generation, so it goes to The Older Boy’s fiance, should he ever have one.

The thing is, I don’t know how far back it goes. I do know that my Mom got it when she and Dad got engaged, and then it passed to SIL when she and Hawaii Bro got engaged, and it was an heirloom when Mom got it. Since Mom conveyed it to SIL with instructions that it was to go to the George in each generation, I presume that it goes back at least to my Great Grandmother, who married her George Smith in 1878. But it might go back to HER Mother-in-law, who married HER George Smith in 1854.

Hard to say. I know that it’s really worn, and there’s a hallmark I’ve been unable to identify. Could be from England, Ireland, or America.

Holy crap!

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CALIFORNIA—Renowned rock climber Alex Honnold on Saturday became the first person to scale the iconic nearly 3,000-foot granite wall known as El Capitan without using ropes or other safety gear, completing what may be the greatest feat of pure rock climbing in the history of the sport.

He ascended the peak in 3 hours, 56 minutes, taking the final moderate pitch at a near run. At 9:28 a.m. PDT, under a blue sky and few wisps of cloud, he pulled his body over the rocky lip of summit and stood on a sandy ledge the size of a child’s bedroom.

Honnold began his historic rope-less climb—a style known as “free soloing”—in the pink light of dawn at 5:32 a.m. He had spent the night in the customized van that serves as his mobile base camp, risen in the dark, dressed in his favorite red t-shirt and cutoff nylon pants, and eaten his standard breakfast of oats, flax, chia seeds, and blueberries, before driving to El Capitan Meadow.

[…]

It’s hard to overstate the physical and mental difficulties of a free solo ascent of the peak, which is considered by many to be the epicenter of the rock climbing world. It is a vertical expanse stretching more than a half mile up—higher than the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. From the meadow at the foot of El Capitan, climbers on the peak’s upper reaches are practically invisible to the naked eye.

Speaking of Durbin, Scott Simon interviewed him this morning on the Paris Accord pullout. Simon reminded him that southern Illinois has many coal mines. Durbin: “yes, I’ve been in the mines several times. They now have technology that has replaced hundreds of men in extracting coal. This will put no one back to work in Illinois.” I really like Dick Durbin.

It is a zigzagging odyssey that traces several spidery networks of cracks and fissures, some gaping, others barely a knuckle wide. Along the way, Honnold squeezed his body into narrow chimneys, tiptoed across ledges the width of matchboxes, and in some places, dangled in the open air by his fingertips.

This is the part where I think of the “Endless Screaming” Twitter account.

Welcome to the land of usually reasonable people. Really, we’re just a bunch of flaming moderates (to steal a phrase from my wife). Totes genteel. Like members of a Trump rally, only sane and with a college education and minus the racism, homophobia and sexism that draws such huge crowds for him…if you count the people in dog years.

Speaking of dogs…you’ll get sick of seeing mine. And what’s worse is one of my friends from childhood has a cattle dog who is about to have pups and I’ve already asked for one…so Banjo’s getting a younger sibling hopefully in the next 12 weeks or so.

We have no hazardous waste collection or recycling here. (We did have a recycling programme in our village, but the company ended the contract saying it could not justify the cost of coming all the way out here to collect recyclables.)

We don’t have many places that sells CF lamps either. It’s incandescent here. (Yes, you can still buy 300W incandescent bulbs, despite what wingnuts say.)

Mrs. Weaver’s Facebook page also notes that in addition to the threats against her, she would probably have to quit her job to mount an effective campaign.

With the loss of the job she would lose her family’s healthcare insurance. (That’s the “health risk to her family” part.)

Someday, given that strange actuarial events are bound to occur sometime, there will be a newsday in which the only unnatural death on earth is that of an elderly Outer Mongolian falling off his camel and breaking his neck. On that day, this story will lead every cable and network news broadcast in America. And Donald Trump will announce a campaign to wipe out camels.

I was watching an old documentary on WW1 and I was struck by the hatred of ‘others’ that was rampant during that war. The documentary showed immigrants being rounded up and put directly onto ships back to Europe. It sounded like Woodrow Wilson was quite afraid of the xenophobic forces that would be unleashed by entry in to the war. There was so much mob mentality that sounded just like Trump supporters.

Netflix has secured a deal for the concept at the Cannes Film Festival after a “dramatic negotiation session.” Rihanna and Nyong’o will star, Ava DuVernay will reportedly direct, and Issa Rae will write the script. re: #399 wheat-dogg

Was that the ship carrying Jewish refugees from Europe? I just watched a documentary about its ill-fated journey. Some were able to find safe harbor, but most had to return to Europe.

The St Louis.

The United Kingdom agreed to take 288 of the passengers (31.76 percent), who disembarked and traveled to the UK via other steamers. After much negotiation by Schröder, the remaining 619 passengers were allowed to disembark at Antwerp; 224 were accepted by France (24.70 percent), 214 by Belgium (23.59 percent), and 181 by the Netherlands (19.96 percent). Without any passengers, the ship returned to Hamburg. The following year, after the Nazi German invasions of Belgium, France and the Netherlands in May 1940, all the Jews in those countries were at renewed risk, including the recent refugees.[16][17]

Later research by Scott Miller and Sarah Ogilvie of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum did an actual historical trace on the fate of each passenger.[19] They determined that 254 of those who returned to continental Europe were murdered during the Holocaust:

“Of the 620 St. Louis passengers who returned to continental Europe, we determined that eighty-seven were able to emigrate before Germany invaded western Europe on May 10, 1940. Two hundred fifty-four passengers in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands after that date died during the Holocaust. Most of these people were murdered in the killing centers of Auschwitz and Sobibór; the rest died in internment camps, in hiding or attempting to evade the Nazis. Three hundred sixty-five of the 620 passengers who returned to continental Europe survived the war. Of the 288 passengers sent to Britain, the vast majority were alive at war’s end.”[20]
