The state pays for access to medical, historical, geographic, agricultural, and other databases free for use by libraries. In many towns around here the library is the only Internet connexion. Hunting and fishing licenses are obtained through public libraries (really). Librarians were all trained as ACA Navigators when that program was run up to help people apply for health insurance on the Federal exchange.
Thus the state is more interested in “competent” rather than what letters appear in your degree.

So, I wake up here in Europe and what’s one of the first things I see on the news? A major diplomatic crisis in the Gulf States that’s now risen to the level of expulsion of Qatari diplomats and nationals from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE, and Egypt’s getting into the act as well.
And of course, CENTCOM is located in Qatar as well. This is certainly a fine pickle, now isn’t it?
Gotta love their “privatization of air traffic control” bait and switch plan. It won’t cost anything…except the loans that businesses will take out to “build” this new “non-profit.” And by “build,” what they really mean is this “non-profit” will purchase the existing infrastructure using government-backed loans. Then the director of the “non-profit” will have a “fiduciary responsibility” to it. So a non-profit that will be expected to turn a profit, no doubt for the businesses who will have to “pay back” those loans from the government. Which means your ticket prices are gonna soar as this “non-profit” gouges the fuck out of the airlines.

Qatar called the decision “unjustified” and with “no basis in fact”.
The unprecedented move is being seen as a significant split between powerful Gulf countries, who are also close US allies.
It comes in the context of increased tensions between Gulf countries and their near-neighbour Iran. The Saudi statement accused Qatar of collaborating with Iranian-backed militias.
So the Saudis are claiming that Qatar is supporting both ISIS and al Qaeda (Sunnis) and Iranian-sponsored militias (Shiite)?

Continuing on with my assertion that the rise of Trump represents the existential and religious crises in our society, I’m digging once more into the origins of Christianity… and finding I am appreciating more and more that early Christian thinking was more about marrying Jewish ideas with what I’ll call a Walmart-version of Stoicism.
Now contemporary fundamentalist apologists seem to go all nuts when one brings up stoicism, but I think that alone is telling. Put simply, Seneca hits too close to home, touches too nearly the heart of Pauline teachings, and that makes fundamentalists uncomfortable.
I have asserted here before that the Gospels are variants of the writing down of plays. That is, the plays were not written first by a playwright, but rather that the displaced Jews who were of a mystical bent acted out their beliefs in plays, which eventually became the Advent and Easter/Passover plays that Christians around the world made central to their religious practice. That is why, indeed, the Gospels lend themselves so well to these plays, because that is how they started. Or rather the compilation that became the four Gospels started, them all being variants of each other.
Richard Carrier noted last year that it was likely Marcion and his opponents who crafted the first canons, making their choices of inclusion based as much on politics as anything else.
Thus the entire basis of Christianity is itself a product of politics - a way of finding consensus among disparate groups. Once enough small groups had coalesced around an acceptable compromise, the losing groups were winnowed out. This was well before Nicea.
So when today we see fundamentalists in this country rally around Trump, even though many people may think this an odd thing, it has plenty of historical precedence (even in American history, e.g. slavery, much less medieval or ancient history.)
The need to be secure overwhelms the need for accuracy or consistency. This is why so many Christian teachings are indeed self-contradictory (see even the Nicene creed.) Creeds are political creations to get a group together; creeds are not exercises in logic.
Continuing on: the reason words are treated as magical is because of the power of knowledge. Knowledge is power, as the old saying goes, and writing is how to transfer knowledge across space-time.
For both the religious leaders returning from Babylon to the levant, and a few centuries later for the diaspora Jews of the 1st century AD, the need to compete with the writing of the Greek and and then Roman world was strong. It has been noted by many that the emergence of “Scripture” accompanies secular writings.
So today, after almost two centuries of critically dismantling Scriptures by the (increasingly atheistic) academics, the religious faithful are boxed in: on one side the physical and biological sciences, and on the other side the textual and historical criticisms of various Scriptures.
For anyone wanting to engage with the modern world, this brings about the direct conflict between modernity and traditional religions.
This is what drives our contemporary social angsts, worldwide. Whether the fundamentalist grifters in America backing Trump, or sectarian violence in Islam, or the problem of fundamentalist nationalist Hinduism, and so forth… the key existential problem is how to keep one’s beliefs in light of the modern world which ruthlessly wants to deconstruct every belief into molecular human initiative and emotion.
If modernity does succeed in truly decreasing the role of religion, then the scale of mourning will be titanic, given the death of people as well as beliefs going without salve.
This is the problem of Earth, 2017.

1. The Saudis are flexing their political/military muscles
2. They are making Iran the Designated Enemy
3. Some of KSA’s regional partners (like Qatar, and, more importantly, Pakistan) aren’t thrilled with pushing item 2.
4. Qatar is first in line to get pushback re item 3.
Oh, and a subtext here (at least AFAICT) is that the US isn’t going to be of any serious help here, as they think Trump is an idiot. An easily-played idiot. And an easily-played idiot who will swallow any BS line about the Great Persian Boogeyman.

Science is about how we came about. Religion is about why we were created. A lot of people get the two concepts intermingled.
But nonetheless, if you insist on a literal interpretation of the Scriptures, then you must reject not only science, but also history and even logic, as they often contradict themselves.

The whole Qatar thing is turning into a mess lickety-split:
Some of the Middle East’s biggest airlines are suspending flights to Qatar as a major diplomatic crisis roils the region.
Etihad, Emirates and FlyDubai on Monday announced they are halting all flights in and out of Doha, the Qatari capital, starting Tuesday morning. The news comes after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt said they have broken off relations with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism.
The UAE government said it’s closing its airspace and seaports for Qataris and “banning all Qatari means of transportation.”
Qatar Airways, the country’s flag carrier, didn’t respond to requests seeking comment.
The Qatari government expressed its dismay at its neighbors’ moves to isolate it, calling the decision “unjustified and based on baseless allegations.”
There are around 40 flights a day to Doha from the UAE.
The sudden halt on air travel to and from Qatar is the latest blow to carriers in the region.
Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad were among 10 airlines on which the Trump administration imposed tough new restrictions in March. The carriers are now required to prevent passengers flying from their Middle East hubs to the United States from carrying almost all types of electronic devices in the cabin.

At the risk of making broad generalizations, the Old World (with the exception of Russia, it seems) seems to be becoming more secular, in that religion is now more a social event rather than an abiding feature of daily life. The USA, meanwhile, seems divided between a largely secular urban populace and a largely religious rural and small town populace, neither of which seem to understand the other.
An anecdote now: I grew up on Long Island in a nominally Protestant home, but my mom was Lutheran and my dad Presbyterian and neither seemed inclined to go to church. So I never actually read the Bible until I was a teenager. I had friends who were Catholic, Jewish, Christian Scientist, and church-goers. We never talked religion. It was a personal thing that maybe only came up when Ann came to school with an ash smudge on her forehead or Daniel stayed home for Yom Kippur services.
Then I moved to Wyoming after college. As a reporter I had to interview some couple for some now-forgotten reason, and their question to me left me momentarily stunned. “Are you a Christian?” they asked.
It was the first time in my life that anyone felt it necessary to ask me my religion, and i soon realized that my attitude about it was definitely not shared in the vast interior of the USA.
(I said I was, by the way, as I judged it would be necessary to continue the interview productively.)

Maybe. Daniel Larison at TAC linked to a couple of analyses last Friday, though I don’t think he (or anybody) expected a diplomatic crisis to blow up this quickly. It’s complex (like most things in the Arab world), but the short version seems to be:
1. The Saudis are flexing their political/military muscles
2. They are making Iran the Designated Enemy
3. Some of KSA’s regional partners (like Qatar, and, more importantly, Pakistan) aren’t thrilled with pushing item 2.
4. Qatar is first in line to get pushback re item 3.Oh, and a subtext here (at least AFAICT) is that the US isn’t going to be of any serious help here, as they think Trump is an idiot. An easily-played idiot. And an easily-played idiot who will swallow any BS line about the Great Persian Boogeyman.

Remember, Trump took special effort in condemning Iran specifically in his speechifying in Saudi Arabia. I wonder if the Saudis coached him on that point, or if they took his random thoughts as carte blanche to fuck with everyone in the MidEast.

Mostly American Christians are taught that Tabor/Jacobovici are heretical. To me they simply seem opportunistic - there is more than one way to skin the religion cat.

Since we seem to be in a lull for the moment news-wise, let me fill you in on my own news bulletin.
I have officially “aged out” out of working in China, and will be leaving at the end of the month. Apparently, Big Daddy Xi has told everyone that the regulations must be followed, and the regs say age 60 is the maximum age for the work visa. I got a year’s reprieve because I turned 61 in January, and could finish out the year. But no such reprieve seems forthcoming for the following school year.
I want to stay, and my school wants me to stay. There is a slim chance I could qualify as a “visiting scholar” and get a different kind of visa, but whether I get it or not, I still have to get out of Dodge when my current res permit expires on the 30th. Like in 25 days.
Finals are approaching, and I still need to give those and hand in my grades. I’ve got to pack up the stuff I want to keep, and get rid of the stuff I don’t, and meanwhile say goodbye to my students and friends.
It sucks, because I was planning to stay one more year, and then leave for greener pastures. Now instead of a year to prepare, I have barely a month.
I have already begin the dreaded job search routine. This will be the first time I’ve been unemployed in 40 years, and if I had way more money in the bank, I could just retire early. But, as matters stand, I have to find a job definitely by summer’s end. I’m not especially worried, as I have loads of experience and the willingness to relocate most anywhere, but the uncertainty of finding gainful employment at age 61 still preys on my mind. If all else fails, I may need to start my own business or consultancy.
In the interim, I’ll be living with my kids in the USA, so you’ll probably see more of me during the normal American waking hours beginning next month.

A Korean placement agency told me the top age is usually 40. I have not heard back from my Japanese inquiries, but I am not especially hopeful. Most of the Asian countries seem unwilling to employ anyone over 60, despite the supposed cultural reverence for teh olds.
My cousin, who is about 10 years older than I, got riffed when his corporation merged with another. So, in his 50s with a kid in high school and another in college, he had to scramble to find work. He ran into two problems: his age and his expected salary as a former corporate accountant. In the end, he started a consultancy, made more money and had to work fewer hours.

He said that he gives ICE notice well in advance of the inmate’s release and if they want to obtain an arrest warrant, they can knock themselves out.

I agree. Same with Christina Aguilera. Both have spectacular voices but do far too many runs, IMHO.
Maybe less emotion helps, a hard boiled intellectual peek for a minute.
I found out that special teams train on buses and trains and aircraft physically. There are mock and real aircraft cabins at some training facilities. But the cop that first rolls up or gets caught up in a public incident is not gonna be one of those guys. (Sorry ladies few of those teams yet include women). So when we ponder what it takes at an incident to “help” you see how little civilians have in common with police. How unlikely an intersection of skills will work right given even trained people that did not train together like the teams you need.
What’s more likely? When people hide out maybe one of them has a gun and training. What’s the best? GTFO with everyone else. Duh.

In my world, the world of my father and other family members who are gun nuts, not one has ever fired a weapon in self-defense. They are also not trigger happy. There are rules and they are strictly followed. Not even a toy gun is pointed at a living creature.
Both of my son’s grandfather served in the military, I think it makes a difference is how a gun is perceived by an individual.
It’s a tool, not so much an extension of manhood. It’s a responsibility.

I have that deeply ingrained in my spine, never point anything resembling a gun at a target you do not intend to kill, and that’s from the air rifle practice in high school.
Then I have bits and pieces from friends and acquaintances which make me unpleasant to play FPS’es (first-person-shooter games) with.
I haven’t been in the military, but I’m prepared to serve if the embassy contacts me because the panic button has been pressed.
I do not own any firearms, but if I need to pick one up because circumstances so require, I know what I’d prefer and the basics of usage.

I used to watch American Idol and the judges often told them to use those runs to show something off…not just generally throughout the entire song.

I went to a raucous early Trump rally in southern NH and found a parking lot filled with Suburbans and Escalades. The audience looked like a mix of real estate agents, contractors, and bankers. There was a smattering of camo, but mostly gaudy red-white-and blue clothing items. And yes, there is a high correlation between trump bumper stickers and III% stickers on trucks, one was mostly struck by the large trump signs in the yards of >$1million-dollar homes.

Following the London Bridge attack, it would be really nice if someone in a position of authority pointed out that these types of attacks are crimes not much different than mass shootings; and that the way to deal with them is to treat them accordingly. Just the egos of the private is always better people. I actually worked as an intern in the Dulles ATC tower as a teenager. The FAA really cares a lot about training their controllers. Making ATC for profit just sounds short-sighted and stupid.

I have a friend, who I hardly ever see, who is teaching English in China. Before that, he taught in a South American country, where he got married and had a son. Venezuela. Not so nice these days. Not recommended. (Both were for the same company, but I don’t know which one.)
I have a sister, who I haven’t seen in years, who went to Germany to visit my brother who lives in Berlin and works as a translator. She spoke no German when she arrived. She stayed, and now teaches German to immigrants, often from India.

One thing I noticed on 9-11: People who were right there, in Manhattan and DC, were much less likely to panic and over-react than those whose involvement was entirely through media coverage. Hell, people went completely apeshit in Lubbock that day and I remember spending some time telling them to get a grip. You’re right the Republicans in Congress will do nothing. They will however stand by and watch Trump get cut down.
