WaPo: Trump’s New Dir. of National Intelligence Says Trump Asked Him to Intervene With Comey on Russia Investigation

The hits just keep on coming
Politics • Views: 36,186

Another bombshell from the Washington Post tonight: Trump’s new Director of National Intelligence, Daniel Coats, told associates in March that Trump asked him to intervene with James Comey and get the FBI to lay off the investigation of Michael Flynn’s contacts with Russia.

On March 22, less than a week after being confirmed by the Senate, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats attended a briefing at the White House together with officials from several government agencies. As the briefing was wrapping up, Trump asked everyone to leave the room except for Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

The president then started complaining about the FBI investigation and Comey’s handling of it, said officials familiar with the account Coats gave to associates. Two days earlier, Comey had confirmed in a congressional hearing that the bureau was probing whether Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia during the 2016 race.

After the encounter, Coats discussed the conversation with other officials and decided that intervening with Comey as Trump had suggested would be inappropriate, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal matters.

Same here. In fact, most of the current postings on my FB feed are re-links from gun clubs about 6/6/44 - which is a worthy thing to celebrate, but with the way current events are going and the fact that this is not a major anniversary, I would expect to see more postings about current events.

Radiohead is re-issuing OK Computer for its 20th anniversary (sigh, I feel old) with three unreleased tracks from that era. Here’s the first:

Radiohead - I Promise

Sounds more like a track that belongs on The Bends, which is probably why it was left off, but a beautiful song nonetheless.

I’m not so sure that Trumpers even fully believe that fake news shit. Deep down, I think they know that the Trump administration has gone to shit, but they can’t actually admit it because to do so would mean looking weak. I still experience cognitive dissonance when I “remember” that this asshole was elected President.

Whenever I hear “the White House” referred to as the source of something (as in “The White House responded to reports…”) I still think of Obama.

It just makes no goddamn sense.

Though that’s possible, I think you underestimate the extent to which they live in an alternative reality. I just went off on my Wingnut Cousin, who said of Muslims condemning terror attacks, “And ever so rarely has any Muslim condemned these actions.”

Of course that’s complete bullshit, which can be disproved with a few seconds of effort. But he wants to believe Muslims are all bad, so it simply doesn’t get through.

I’ve had online discussions with wingnuts about economics, real simple stuff like what happened to tax revenues after every tax cut. Usually when they see the graph showing it taking 5-7 years to reach the same level of revenue, they stop responding.

But then a couple weeks later, the same people will claim ‘tax cuts always increase tax revenues.”

Because I’ve traveled, I get “asked” about foreign policy by the wingnuts I know.

Half the time what I say simply doesn’t register, because what they’re really waiting for is the chance to shout or sneer whatever slogan they’ve picked up.

The other half of the time they let me explain something in great detail…at which point they get really quiet because they don’t have any details of their own…but it doesn’t stick. Once they go back into an environment that rewards repetition of thought-destroying cliches, all the information just becomes moot.

This always stuns with w/r/t Middle East stuff, because people have opinions with such anger and heat behind them…and no fucking information. Not too long ago I had a nice, but somewhat gullible, dude tell me that Iran already and nukes, and that the Iran negotiations were “bad” because Obama (bonus ignorance points for not knowing about the other nations involved in the talks) was going to let them keep them.

Depressingly, the same guy keeps coming back to me with bewilderment over Trump’s support of legislation that fucks him over, like the AHCA. And I keep saying “why did you believe this man, and not ask any questions about his background? Because a slight dip into his business history suggests that he succeeds only by fucking over his investors.” I’m beginning to lose my patience.

We got that here when we went to Poland. We got back the day before the annual town party. At that party, nearly everyone said they would have been afraid to travel to such a place, because it might be overrun by ISIS. (I’m pretty sure Poland is not on ISIS’s radar.)

Even heard about the dangers of foreign countries from a few people here when we took trips to Canada. (The only thing dangerous I ever saw in Canada was the huge selection of doughnuts at Tim Horton’s, and innumerable varieties of poutine.)

You’ll hear that last phrase in that quote “the time for argument has past” (see also: We’ll have to agree to disagree) in a lot more than anti-Semitism. On virtually any subject where the person has an emotional vested interest (climate change, religion, &c) rather than a reasoned one, I can’t remember the number of times I’ve heard “We’ll have to agree to disagree.” No.

Oh, of course. My wingnut cousin lives in West Virginia, one of the, if not THE whitest states in the Union. But he knows all about Muslims, and black people, and Hispanic immigrants. His beliefs are never challenged by interacting with reality.

Yep. I experience this often.

The one that will eventually make me lose my temper is that they don’t know anything about US-Saudi collaboration in fighting “communism” (and Islamic pluralism, ME secularism, ME pluralism, etc) and thus just think that the entire Islamic world was just always how it currently is. They also don’t know shit about Pakistan-US ties, which get especially infuriating since that had direct consequences for my family.

Then again, I get sick of liberals who think the Soviet Afghan War muhajadeen are synonymous with the Taliban, or the ones who don’t know about Soviet use of proxy warfare (or, for that matter, the internal state violence that heavily leaned on non-Slavs, or about stuff like the annexation of the Baltic states.)

Next week after never? (On the other hand, the FBI could be looking into that. We wouldn’t know unless they announced an arrest.)

More at the Houston Chronicle:

Harris County took the fight over its controversial bail system to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, even as county officials scrambled to plan the imminent release of dozens of misdemeanor defendants held behind bars who cannot afford to post cash bail.

A federal appeals court ruling earlier Tuesday had greenlighted the release of hundreds of poor inmates held in the Harris County Jail on misdemeanor charges ahead of their trials, and Sheriff Ed Gonzalez prepared for the release of as many as 177 people starting Wednesday morning.

But in an emergency filing late Tuesday with the nation’s highest court, Harris County asked for another halt to the ruling by Chief U.S. District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal.

The county’s request went to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who handles appeals requests from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Thomas can either rule on the matter himself or take it to the full court, according to the county attorney’s office.

I’m not so sure that Trumpers even fully believe that fake news shit. Deep down, I think they know that the Trump administration has gone to shit, but they can’t actually admit it because to do so would mean looking weak. So they flail about with this obvious bullshit in a pathetic attempt to take the heat off their president. It ain’t gonna work.

It would also mean the collapse of a huge amount of the infrastructure their political belief system is based on. And I continue to say that the hardest thing for people to do is admit they are wrong.

It would also mean the collapse of a huge amount of the infrastructure their political belief system is based on. And I continue to say that the hardest thing for people to do is admit they are wrong.

It’s a problem I encounter when a Bible-thumper comes after me on-line.

The problem is the person confuses “what they believe” with “who they are.”

As an example, climate science. Just like a religion, conservative voters have been inculcated with the idea that anthropogenic climate change is not occurring. They so fully believe that, it has become what they are.

As evidence continues to mount that climate change is occurring, and humans are responsible for it, they have to retreat further and further into their religion. To admit they were wrong about that is to admit who they are is wrong.

Similarly immigration issues. They have been told, just like a religion, that immigrants are the cause of their job woes. It doesn’t matter that is not so, that the “free market” they worship is. Such people will continue to ignore things as multinational companies can move wherever they want, but largely people cannot.

So they continue clinging to the religious belief that immigrants are stealing jobs (and lately, a giant wall will fix that, see also John McCain’s “build the dang fence” remark). To give up that notion is not only admitting you are wrong, but giving up a portion of what you are.

Mike Pence describes himself as a Christian first, a conservative second, and a Republican third. He did not describe himself as an American. All three of those are religious positions. To give them up or change them is to give up what he is.

James Clapper gave a speech today to the Canberra Press Club

.huffingtonpost.com.au

“Clapper claimed that when he called Trump to talk about intelligence, the president asked him to disavow the controversial intelligence dossier that claimed Russia had compromising material on Trump.

“I tried, naively as it turned out, to appeal to his higher instincts by pointing out that the US intelligence community that he was about to inherit is a national treasure in our country and that the people in it were committed to supporting him and making him successful. Ever-transactional, he simply asked me to publicly refute the infamous dossier which I couldn’t and wouldn’t do,” Clapper said.

Dungenessgood. Blue crab sweeter and better. Dearth would need to feed me some fresh caught one that he raves about for me to consider a switch in allegiance from Chesapeake Bay crab to something else.

I’ve encountered Erich Fromm, especially his concepts of group narcissism and moral hypocondria. Both makes so much sense when it comes to explaining people’s behavior IMO.
