Reposted from downstairs:

The flaw with that theory is that it assumes Trump and his acolytes and lackeys wouldn’t botch a war.

Bombing Syria aimlessly did nothing for his numbers, and got quickly forgotten in everything else. An actual war will amount to nothing more than a circling the wagons moment for the GOP.

I get the feeling that a lot of people think that they are watching the end of an American Presidency. If this doesn’t work, then what?

What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.
Or, death by a thousand cuts.

It certainly is good for filling up newspapers.

I don’t need to hear the President’s side Mr. Burr. He will just be lying anyway. I think that is why we are here today.

I think you underestimate the partisan reaction to this information at the height of a presidential campaign.

Remember shortly after Obama was first elected, he pointed out that he did not destroy the economy, and was accused of whining.

The country is exhausted yet is still in partisan corners, months ago, I don’t see a better reaction.

That said, Comey screwed us all. Obama, I cut some slack to. I don’t know how I would have responded to this if I were in his shoes.

Now, GOP wants to argue that since Trump didn’t explicitly order something, there’s no obstruction of justice.

We’re definitely in a gray area because while the FBI is in effect the national civilian police force it has a somewhat militaristic command structure and the capacity for abuse by the President, who is also Commander in Chief, is enormous. In a way it’s fucked up that we even have to debate it because of that fact.

They are divide-and-conquer people, not persuasive people… not in the least. It’s why Trump has an approval rating in the low-30s but is still relatively safe in his own party.

What to know about the (other) hearing happening today

If your eyes aren’t already glued to a different hearing this morning, HHS Secretary Tom Price is headed before the Senate Finance committee to testify about his boss’s budget plans. President Trump’s proposed 2018 budget includes massive cuts to the agencies housed under HHS, including a 17 percent cut to the CDC, a 31 percent cut to the FDA, and an 18 percent cut to the NIH. Price defended similar cuts in Trump’s initial budget proposal, citing “indirect expenses.” The hearing, which you can watch live here, gets underway at 9:45 a.m. ET. And elsewhere on the Hill, House leaders are examining the role that the health department can and should play in maintaining health care cybersecurity. That’s timely: Just last month, a huge number of hospitals in the UK were hit by a ransomware attack that locked providers out of patient records unless they paid the hackers.

Clinton Quizzed About Tie He Wore When Lewinsky Testified
By John King/CNN
Clinton, Aug. 6
EDGARTOWN, Mass.(Aug. 19) — During his grand jury testimony Monday prosecutors questioned President Bill Clinton about the necktie he wore on the day Monica Lewinsky testified before the federal grand jury.

Lewinsky claims she gave the president the tie he wore Aug. 6, the day she appeared, fully immunized, before Independent Counsel Ken Starr’s grand jury. Prosecutors asked Clinton Monday if he was trying to send a signal to the former White House intern by wearing the gold necktie at a Rose Garden event on handgun control. During the questioning prosecutors reached into a pouch and pulled out a photograph of the tie the president was wearing the morning of Lewinsky’s testimony.

Two sources, loyal to the White House, who were briefed on the president’s testimony said they were told, the president leaned back in his chair and smiled and then expressed bewilderment at the question. According to the sources, the president said it was possible Lewinsky had given him the tie, he was not certain of that, and he was certainly not trying to send her a signal. “It was a rare light hearted moment in a very tough day for the president … I don’t think it is anything that is being taken seriously around here,” said one of the sources. The questions about the tie came up during a portion of the testimony regarding possible obstruction of justice.

Lewinsky told prosecutors she gave the president a half dozen or so ties and sent notes asking the him to wear them as a demonstration that he was thinking of her. Lewinsky entered the courthouse at 8:30 a.m. EDT on that day, testimony began at 9 a.m. The president’s event in the Rose Garden was at 10 a.m. During his testimony Monday Clinton admitted a sexual relationship with Lewinsky, sources say. After his testimony Clinton also addressed the nation and admitted an inappropriate relationship with the ex-intern. Both Clinton and Lewinsky originally denied an sexual affair in sworn deposition for the Paula Jones sexual harassment case. Clinton continues to deny he lied under oath.

I was with my sister when she had one, she freaked out and was crying. Scary. She was probably 55 or so at the time. She had been getting migraines for all her adult life, but this was the first time she had aphasia because of it. I think it passed in an hour.

When the nervous system is inundated with pain signals over decades everything stops working properly. The Central Nervous System get’s overloaded and can’t cope. No drug can help, it just takes time and meditation.

575
Major Tom  Jun 8, 2017 • 10:33:51am

James Comey: The reason this is such a big deal is we have this big messy wonderful country where we fight with each other all the time, but nobody tells us what to think, what to fight about, what to vote for except other Americans. And that’s wonderful and often painful. But we’re talking about a foreign government using technical intrusion and lots of other methods tried to shape the way we think, we vote, we act. That is a big deal. And people need to recognize it. It’s not about Republicans or Democrats. They’re coming after America, which I hope we all love equally. They want to undermine our credibility in the face of the world. They think that this great experiment of ours is a threat to them, and so they’re going to try to run it down and dirty it up as much as possible.

That’s what this is about. They will be back, because we remain, as difficult as we can be with each other, we remain that shining city on the hill, and they don’t like it.

I wish he wouldn’t use antiseptic phrases like “technical intrusion”. These are crimes. People get arrested and sent to jail for these crimes. Trump aided and abetted these crimes by trying to stop the investigation. And since the perpetrators are still at large, Trump is aiding and abetting future crimes.

This might qualify as BREAKING!!!! news, Marco Rubio appears to have developed something that resembles at least a single vertebrae (not an entire back bone, but at least a partial one):

en. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) refused to join his Republican colleagues in dismissing the notion that there was anything in Comey’s public testimony before the Intelligence Committee this morning suggesting President Trump tried to obstruct justice.

“I’m not prepared to reach a conclusion on that because we’re not done with all the other pieces that are missing,” Rubio told reporters following the Comey hearing.

I mean, I fully expect him to walk that back by the time I hit “Post It” but that’s a brave step for the Senator in the witness protection program.

Here’s the conundrum, and it’s very similar to whether or not to tell people that Obamacare and the ACA are the same thing: We need people to understand that Trump is damaging our country and that he needs to go. But, to keep another Trump from happening, we need people to understand the role they played in getting him elected. But that will piss people off, and cause most of them to defend Trump because they’re in effect, defending their egos.

Thanks. That made me laugh out loud. My two oldest sons know what that is. I don’t know if my wife knows, and I’m not going to try to find out.

I’d never heard of it until I started watching Archer. But I am aware of Rule 34, so I wasn’t completely shocked by its actual existence.

Even if he claimed executive privilege, the moment the White House released the termination letter to the public, the the privilege on facts and/or issues regarding Comey telling Trump he wasn’t under investigation would have been waived. Privileges cannot be used as a sword and shield, if the party who claims the privilege opens the door to evidence that would be protected by privilege, then the privilege is considered waived.

With this many comments, go into Spy mode. The iPhone cannot handle more than maybe 450 comments. Sometimes more, most times less.

Trump’s lawyer is taking everything Comey said, flipping victim and offender, and sending it back out.

If Trump has used this lawyer before (which he has, usually for his most obviously non-legit issues), then two questions arise:
1. Did Trump pay his bills?
2. If so, why?
Such a break from normal behavior demands an explanation.

Trump is more than welcome to take the stand under oath.

Ford was the last president to testify before Congress, and it was about him pardoning Nixon. Before that? Wilson (which was done at the White House and involved the treaty to end WWI and form the League of Nations), and Lincoln (which involved his state of the union being given to the press before Congress.

re: #650 EPR-radar

Trump being cross-examined would be a shit show for the ages.

There’s nobody in the administration (except for possibly Trump himself) who would believe it would be a good idea for him to say anything under oath. We’ve seen portions of deposition transcripts where he admits his estimate of his net worth is based on how he’s feeling that particular day. Although, I could see it going like this:

A Few Good Men Did you Order the Code Red?

Yep. The reason executive privilege no longer applies is because Trump disclosed enough that he gave up the privilege for this information.

Imagine in an alternate universe where additional Benghazi hearings are taking place. HRC is President and the Dems control both chambers. The commanding officer of the nearest rapid response team testifies that HRC told him that she “hopes you’ll stand down.”

I’m confident that the GOP Senators would argue that such statement was not an order.

My guess is that the Safari in question is on an iPhone. But yeah, if folks are running into slow threads it’s probably a lack of RAM (which is of course going to be more of a problem on phones/tablets because they have much less RAM than a desktop or laptop.).
