A few years ago, Nebraska went for mail voting (just before I moved here) to save money.
Basically, the idea of dragging polling stations out to so many rural villages like the one I live in, and unincorporated places such as Lisco (down the road sixteen miles from me in Garden County) was too expensive.
Cities such as Omaha, Lincoln, and South Sioux City have regular polling stations, as do smaller cities like Scottsbluff.
The mail vote works both ways here: Voter turnout is much higher than in the past (due to the ease of voting in rural areas), but overwhelms the cities (because they have polling stations). As such, mail voting favours conservatives here.

I don’t think we’re going to disappear from world politics, we’re just too big and powerful. But, and it’s not entirely a bad thing, a lot more countries are going to ask themselves if following the US is in their best interests. We’re the third largest country in land area, the third largest country in population, still the largest economy, and the largest corn grower in the world. Of course we will still wield some major influence. But a question for a while will be “Can we count on your country to hold that position for the next four years?”

I don’t know whether straight-ticket voting is a good or bad thing. We don’t have it here - our elections are nominally non-partisan (except Federal positions).
Eliminating straight-ticket voting means you can’t tick the “D” box, but it also means you can’t tick the “R” box. I don’t know whether that would help Republicans in Texas or no (I’m guessing the Republicans think it will, which is why the bill was written). Considering the demographic shift that is coming for Texas, it may turn out to hurt Republicans.

I have to admit that the congressional committees don’t interest me that much, even Comey’s testimony. What matters here isn’t whether Trump’s people had untoward contacts with the Russians, or that Trump tried to fuck with an investigation, or that Russia screwed with our elections. All those things are, or should be, obvious. But the real story is the old one in international crime, and I hope someone, maybe the special prosecutor, is investigating it. It has taken me years to understand the US voting system - especially the fact that so many positions are via a vote. In my parliamentary democracy we vote for politicians, local, state and federal. Each is elected at a different time. Voting usually takes about a minute (the only exception being the Senate which involves a slightly complicated voting system. We also have elections on a Saturday, with options for both early and postal voting.
There seem to be so many ways in which those in power in the US can make it difficult for people to vote. Until you get a standardized voting system, administered by a non-partisan commission, this will continue.

I don’t know enough about UK politics to know where the LD will end up. But if the Tories offer them a share of power, like they did to Clegg a few years back, then the LD may decide it’s better to have a little bit of power than remain in the distant back benches?
The other option for the Tories is with the Irish conservatives (relatively speaking.) Not only did Sinn Fein pick up seats, but so did the DUP. SF will sit out like always, but if the Tories just need one or two votes for their PM, why not offer the DUP some carrots?

We know from the most recent, complete analysis that turnout by black voters was back down to 2004 levels, and Hillary was their preferred candidate. Bernie lost BIG with black voters through out the primaries. The Berniebots think that they can take every Clinton voter for granted, and just add some of Trump’s. It’s not that simple.

It’s all about getting the bead to make its way 100% around the rim, which is easier to do with tire wrenches. With my mountain bike I’ve gotten good enough to just use my hands to reattach the tire to the wheel, I still use tire wrenches to remove the tire.
And when you put a new tube in, check the tire for any shit that might be hiding out on the inside of the tire before you put the tire back on.

I’ve put together a broken chain miles away from the nearest town. And don’t even get me started on drivetrains! Derailleurs, chain rings, and cassettes, those things are fuckin’ finicky!
If you mountain bike long enough, you get to be pretty good at bicycle maintenance.

From what I understand, the UK has the same craptastic first-past-the-post election system as Canada, which means if the vote in a progressive riding splits between several progressive (or at least non-conservative) parties, the conservative can eke out a plurality win. A scythe is better for cardio and arm exercise. A scythe requires aerobic exercise (swinging at the waist to move the implement) as well as arm exercise (aiming and holding the scythe in a position to mow grass or weeds within an inch of the ground requires real exercise).
I am glad I gave up my gasoline lawnmower: No gasoline, no noise, and can cut closer to obstacles than my lawnmower could reach.
My farmer neighbours also give me a thumbs-up for tradition.

I’ll second that. MN has created a ton of great biking trails and it’s a very bike friendly state. I’ll put in a vote for the Root River Trail in SE MN. Really beautiful ride with small towns to explore along the way.

Tire levers plastic thingies that usually come in packs of 3 - because it’s a lot easier to change a tube using 3 than using fewer.
You use them to flip the bead over to the outside of the rim. You DON’T use them to put the bead back over to the inside, unless you absolutely have to.
