let us remember them
ah
let us pray for them

ah
send strength their way
everyone screams
ah
send some courage to them
ah
send some light to them

Bridge
if you want to give them faith
pray for them
if you want to give them courage
scream for them
if you want to give them hope
dance for them
for they need our strength
as much as we need theirs

Verse
ah
send love to them
everyone screams
ah
send patience their way
ah
blessings for them

Chorus
we are here because they fought for us
we can’t forget that
without them
we would still wear chains
so today we sing
for the warriors on the battlefield

Verse
ah
send love to them
everyone screams
ah
send patience their way
ah
blessings for them

Chorus
we are here because they fought for us
we can’t forget that
we are here because they fell for us
we will always respect that
let us thank them for all they have done
they deserve honor and respect
respect for the warriors of this earth
honor for those above

re: #414 Belafon

Music question. My 17 year old middle son, who for the longest time would not listen to anything but classical music, has picked up some wide tastes in music, including David Bowie. He listens to it online some, but I would like to get him a couple of Bowie albums. What would be the best two to get?

Edited because I didn’t make it explicit that I wanted David Bowie albums.

Hm.

Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs are usually where I’d tell people to start, but you might want to consider Low and/or Heroes if he’s a classical music person. Both have been adapted into symphonic compositions by Philip Glass.

But your best bet is to find out what track he’s actually listened to, then find the corresponding album.

1993-2000: “We don’t need evidence to prove that the Clintons did anything illegal!!”

2001-2008: “SHOW US THE EVIDENCE!!!!”

2009-2016: “The allegations alone deserve investigation!”

2017: “YOU CAN’T PROVE TRUMP DID ANYTHING ILLEGAL!!!”

Beginning to sense a pattern…

The last bit about finding what’s he listening to specifically is because Bowie was incredibly dynamic across his career as a writer/composer. Most people fall hardest for his glam rock period (hence Ziggy and DD).

I’ll repeat what I said downstairs - the two albums by Tin Machine (in which Howie decides to be just a member of the band) are overlooked but really excellent records.

The first one in particular is stellar, and the track ‘Under the God’s is a standout - and suddenly relevant in our current political climate.

I recommended ‘Heroes’ below but then also recommended a Mott The Hoople album that David Bowie produced for them. It combines Mott’s rock and roll instincts with some of Bowies artier instincts and it turned out great. ‘All The Young Dudes” is a classic.

We’re in an ironic situation when the best rebuttals of fleatearthers probably come from the YECs. Because the mainstream scientists don’t give a damn, whereas flatearthism is dangerous to the YECs (it can be used to weaken their “teach the controversy” argument, to mock their Biblical literalism, etc.).

Shiplord Kirel  Jun 10, 2017 • 3:54:14am

The crazy right never really intended to gain control of the national government; they can peddle their snake-oil and conspiracy theories quite profitably from a position of nominal opposition. Indeed it is more than a little uncomfortable for a charlatan like Alex Jones to have his man, Trump, in a position of real power. Why, for instance, has Trump not revealed “the truth” about UFOs or chemtrails or Sandy Hook? When you’re in power you have to put up or shut up. Conspira-liars have developed some work-arounds for this but it taxes their ingenuity and credibility right to the breaking point even among their pitifully gullible followers. The most cynical RW grifters, televangelists for example, may well realize that it is actually dangerous to have people who were elected by brainwashed rubes in positions of real power. A general nuclear exchange cannot be good for a mega-dollar religious empire nor would it do much for MLM profits. To use last year’s favorite analogy, the right wing’s Dr. Frankensteins have lost control of their monster and it may yet destroy them.

Cleansing the Earth with nuclear fire would no doubt be a bad thing for humans. Perhaps we should take a longer view however. The Earth itself would recover in a couple of hundred thousand years, probably with a much changed and more survivable biosphere. This is about 1/20,000th of its probable lifespan, ie the mere blink of an eye. The proverbial Sweet Meteor of Death would be quicker, and probably allow for a faster recovery, but we don’t seem to have one handy. Trump, however, has the nuclear arsenal quite literally at his pudgy fingertips.

It will be of great use to whatever creatures survive, cockroaches for instance. It is also possible that other intelligent species will evolve. They can study us just as we study creatures who have been extinct for millions of years. Since we are far more numerous than the proto-humans we have studied, and our presence far more intrusive, it is likely that future students of the past will be able to learn by our example.

That’s actually the Robinson Projection. It is currently the most accurate representation of that is use. The Mercator is a nautical use projection (cylindrical) and, as such, loses lots of land mass accuracy The further you get from the equator. The Robinson is the lastest attemp the decrease that distortion that will appear on any projection and it decreases land mass distortion as compared to the Mercator, greatly.

So, in the fallout from the British General Election, it seems embattled PM May is apparently seeing a formal coalition arrangement with Northern Ireland’s DUP.

re: #69 Dr Lizardo

For those wondering why a formal Tory/DUP coalition is a cause for concern, I’m going to let this Reddit user answer it, because they did far better than I could.

A British Government reliant on the support of the DUP for their majority is in the same position as one in a formal coalition with the DUP with regard to negotiations in Northern Ireland. Sinn Fein and the SDLP already don’t believe that the British Government under May acts as a neutral facilitator for negotiations, not without reason, and if the Government is propped up by the DUP then they simply can’t claim to be an honest, neutral broker.

So the Tories relying on the DUP, even just with confidence and supply, vindicates everything that Sinn Fein have said about British rule in Northern Ireland for decades - that the British aren’t honest brokers, that they can’t be trusted, that they will always side with unionists, that there is nothing in the union for Irish republicans and nationalists, that there’s nothing in the union even for soft unionists who reject the DUP’s corruption and conservatism, that the only option to represent the interests of most people in NI is a united Ireland.

This is very bad news for power sharing. Talks in the past have succeeded because nationalists have accepted that the British Government has no interest in Northern Ireland beyond respecting the right of its people to self-determination. This was certainly the case under Blair, and I think under the coalition too. This principle is the foundation of the Good Friday Agreement. If the Government ends up in a partisan position where they owe their position in the Commons to the DUP then that will undermine the confidence of nationalists in the process and make it much less likely that negotiations will be successful.

And let’s not forget that the negotiations are scheduled to end at the end of June - just in time for loyalist marching season, traditionally the most tense time of year in Northern Ireland. Everyone involved needs to tread very carefully, but May’s government seems to lack any understanding of Northern Ireland and has in the past shown itself willing to be played by the DUP so I don’t for a second believe that they will be at all careful.

So it’s a disaster for power sharing, but Sinn Fein will be loving it. I imagine Gerry Adams is rubbing his hands with glee. Theresa May is handing them a huge win because she doesn’t understand Northern Ireland.

Remember that Trump’s election was a bit of a fluke. He got a lower percentage of the popular vote than Romney did, and only managed to squeak in because Hillary was the most unpopular major party nominee ever other than Trump himself, and Trump had the help of the Russians, the mainstream media and Comey. Its unlikely the stars will perfectly align for the GOP nominee in 2020 as they did for Trump last year.

I hope not; the last thing anyone needs is a return to sectarian strife. And the last thing Britain needs is the return of the IRA (or whatever permutation they’re calling themselves these days - I think there’s still a handful running around).

We need to check with Peter King about that. I’m sure he’s up to date on which terrorists he supports.

The courts have been helping in that regard. A lot of gerrymanders have been thrown out of courts, and there is a Wisconsin case which could result in Gerrymandering being declared unconstitutional, if Kennedy joins the liberals.

Well, in any event, it’s still a projection of a curved surface onto a flat one.

This is true. All projections are distortions (either distance or area is hosed, Mercator, being for sailing is a projection allowing simplified calculations for courses) and projecting a sphere onto a plane is an extreme distortion, if the world were flat, our flat maps would all be equiarea, and they’re not

My guess is she had Twitter open, set the phone down or slid it into a pocket/purse, and whatever it was brushing up against typed in a bunch of emojis and activated the Send button.

They better learn from our mistakes anyway…

This is from where I grew up. Dying farm communities revitalized by an influx of largely Mexican families, who were moving in and putting down roots, and raising families. Until ICE started showing up.

That area went heavily for Trump. It used to be whiter than white. The only brown faces we saw were the migrant workers, who were black or Puerto Rican. They didn’t try to mix with the locals, of course. They ‘knew their place’. I suspect one reason why the locals went for Trump is that they didn’t notice so much that their dying towns were reviving, but rather that a strangers who looked different and talked different were moving in, and it scared them.

I guess to them, Make American Great Again means to revitalize their dying local economies without requiring an influx of Others.

The So. Cal. development I grew up in had one Hispanic family, and it was quite a notable event when the one Black family moved into the elementary school district. The mom came to the school and spoke to each class. “We’re pretty much the same as you, but my daughter (attending the school) has the advantage of experience in both cultures.

Meanwhile, the next development went in down the street, with their own elementary school. All white. I like to think all the kids notice these things, but I can’t judge by my own experience. My mom was a member of the Fair Housing Council, and she would take me to play the parts of mom and daughter looking to rent an apartment (white version) to check for a different reaction than the black version just got.

Some parts of my upbringing were done right.

Please no Carmelo. He is a black hole offensively and a liability on defense.

What makes Durant so damn good is not only can he shoot so well, the dude plays great defense.

And if the Cavs have any issues it can be lackadaisical defense. The Cavs could handle GS way better if Durant wasn’t there…he is the big difference maker for sure.

Growing up in white bubble, my story.

I went to an all white catholic school. Until the one little black girl enrolled.

We became friends, my parents & her parents became friends. Her mom had an MG & would come over & give us kids rides up and down the street.

Apparently the neighborhood was shocked.

I had a birthday party where some neighborhood kids were forced to boycott because my friend was there.

I didn’t know all this then, but found out later.

My parents were very liberal in those times & I’m grateful.

Thinking the same thing. Also wondering what dimension must be occupied to find any vindication in the former FBI director’s Trump’s-a-lying-liar testimony.

These guys. I swear.

They think (or are at least trying to push the idea that) the only thing that matters is that Comey did tell Trump that he wasn’t the subject of the investigation. So that weird line in the termination letter, that everyone was going “wait, what?” over, is at least plausibly true.

They are also trying really hard to ignore the part where POTUS on multiple occasions tried to get the Director of the FBI to drop an investigation into a former member of his administration (and into his campaign).

Everybody in Washington Knows the Disaster Is Coming

Washington these days is stuck in a kind of Cassandra Syndrome. Everybody knows the disaster is coming but nobody knows how to stop it, and too many people don’t want to because they figure they can get rich selling off the ruins. But everybody knows the disaster is coming. People talk about it matter-of-factly, the way they talk about rain when the dark clouds gather over the monuments by the river. They also talk about it in whispers while every institution of democratic government screams for help. The government of the United States is in the hands of feckless time-servers and coat-holders at one end of Pennsylvania Avenue, and in the hands of an unpredictable and perilous clown show at the other. It is an altogether remarkable, if terrifying, place to be as summer comes on.

Jesus, won’t somebody get the net?

Silly child. That Lorica Segmenta won’t stop a bullet. And since I doubt it’s made of all that good a grade of steel anyway. even a cheap cut & thrust blade would probably slide between the segments as well. But hey, I’m sure that it’ll keep you safe from that scary religious law that the constitution forbids anyway…

NYT- Religious Liberals Sat Out of Politics for 40 Years. Now They Want in the Game.

Some are calling the holy ruckus a “religious resistance.” Others, mindful that periodic attempts at a resurgence on the religious left have all failed, point to an even loftier ambition than taking on the current White House: After 40 years in which the Christian right has dominated the influence of organized religion on American politics — souring some people on religion altogether, studies show — left-leaning faith leaders are hungry to break the right’s grip on setting the nation’s moral agenda.

They’ve been saying this for years and every time they back down. Another reason why I won’t ever waste time in a church. And millions will continue to walk out of them and never go back.
