I’m sure Saint Bernard didn’t really think this through. An American politician hitching his wagon to Jeremy Corbyn is deeply stupid, especially in our toxic environment.

I wondered what the christian version of sharia law was. There are various opinions. This is one. [Newt Should Check out Mike Pence’s Christian Sharia]

Sharia for Muslims is the equivalent of Canon Law for Catholics, Halakhah for Jews, and I guess the entire Bible for some fundamentalists…

Sanders said. “Where my energy is right now is in fundamentally transforming the Democratic Party into a grass-roots progressive party. And we’ll see where it goes.”

Well that just makes me want to hurl. If the Democratic Party had wanted to be fundamentally transformed to your “vision,” you fucking would have won the primary, Bernie. But you didn’t.

(And I will offer anecdotally, the person who ran for our state party chair as a “grass-roots activist” got her clock cleaned. So either Dems aren’t buying his shit, or his “activists” aren’t showing up when it matters.)

Well, maybe: I wonder how many Americans even know WTH Jeremy Corbyn even is? Since we seem to have a dismally low recognition factor for all but the most in-our-faces-everyday politicians in our own country, I’m guessing “fairly few”.

But yeah: it’s only natural: American Stereotypical Old Leftist Guy admires British Stereotypical Old Leftist Guy: and probably with a tinge of envy that there are so many more of the latter than the former in politics….

Well, submitted an update to the Play store so we’ll see if the changes I made actually fixed the problem (that I couldn’t figure out how to reproduce) or no.

Had to figure out the new UI for submitting stuff too. And there’s a pile of other crashes that I should be dealing with but honestly I sort of want to tear it down and rewrite the damn thing from scratch because it’s clunky as hell and if I updated it for the more current OSes it could be a lot nicer.

But nobody pays me for it so all my time goes to writing books instead, which people do eventually pay me for.

Exactly. Because we all know that RWNJs are careful with facts and are fair in their arguments and rhetoric, right? Some RWNJ punditoid is writing a thinkpiece right now about how Bernie Sanders congratulated Jeremy Corbyn, an IRA/Hamas supporter and avowed Soros agent of chaos.

I’ve always said that this wasn’t a political issue for me at all. It was a very simple issue of fact. The memos were fakes. Let the political chips fall where they may, but fakes is fakes.

Reality still mattered at that point. Now, in the Trump era, I’m not so sure.

Hanging onto facts is what we have to do. Asserting facts at all times is ehat we have to do. Just like what had to be done during McCarthy and Nixon.

re: #28 teleskiguy

Didn’t some projection put the cost of universal health care in California as twice or three times the current state budget?

Single-payer healthcare could cost $400 billion to implement in California

The analysis found that the proposal would require:

- A total cost of $400 billion per year to cover all healthcare and administrative costs.
- Of that, $200 billion of existing federal, state and local funds could be repurposed to go toward the single-payer system.
- The additional $200 billion would need to be raised from new taxes.

The write-up also notes that a universal healthcare proposal would likely reduce spending by employers and employees statewide, which currently ranges between $100 billion and $150 billion annually. Therefore, the total new spending under the bill would be between $50 billion and $100 billion each year.

And keep in mind, that would be on top of the existing federal taxes.

I mean, a lot of us in CA are grown-ups and willing to pay our share, but there are a LOT of questions I need to see answered before I’m throwing my hat into the ring on this. What kind of new taxes are being proposed? How do you ensure that employers are still paying their share of the burden and/or how do you ensure that employees are still receiving the same amount of compensation? (Because if you fuck it up and did this all as income tax on employees, that $100-$150 billion in not-new spending that they’re accounting for could end up also having to come out of the taxpayer’s pockets and most of them wouldn’t see an increase in compensation to help offset it because hey, benefits aren’t part of your income.) What mechanism exists to keep costs under control for people moving in from out of state (you know, how Canada or the UK likes to regulate immigration to keep out people who just want to move there to take advantage of their healthcare system)?

Some of these questions might be answered, I don’t know. I haven’t looked too closely at the bill yet. But a lot of the support I see voiced tends to come without any acknowledgement of these issues so I’m really wary right now.

California is not a country. It’s a state, that is economically and politically connected to other states. When California tries to redo it’s health care, it will be affected by, and affect, every other state.

If we had the political will to redo our health care, we could change it. But, since we’re so invested in our current system, there would be a huge up front cost.

No, no - this is very true. The thing is that we’re already spending 85+% of that on healthcare, between Medicare, MediCal, individual market insurance, and employer provided insurance.

The other big issue is the transition from the current system to something less expensive and Rube Goldberg-y.

It’s like a chemical reaction with a high activation energy. We’re at a pretty high energy state (expensive, inefficient), and the end point would be a lower energy state (cheaper, more efficient) but we’d have to input a lot of energy (money and turmoil) to go from one state to the other.

Sure. I’m just not sure an individual state is going to be able to pull it off, necessarily. I need to do some serious research on it, and I need to see projections from people who are being relatively conservative* in their assumption of the benefits, especially when compared to the potential for costs to increase drastically as people who don’t see any other choice move to CA in order to get healthcare. (And yes, I realize that picking up and moving is a substantial expense and that’s before we talk about CA real estate, but if you’re facing cancer treatment and can’t afford insurance where you live, what’s going to stop you?)

* In the data sense, not the political one.

And I should say that I agree with the concept overall, it’s just …I’m not convinced it can be done on an individual state level right now with the current uncertainty around this issue. But I don’t know. I clearly need to do some looking at the bill in question and start understanding what’s on the table.

As far as providing state benefits (health insurance) to the whole state population Alaska has provided an example. When the Permanent Fund dividends were being given out the payout was based on a formula that the amount an individual received was based on total years of residency. The courts ruled this method was discriminatory to the citizens. The payout process was changed to require a full calendars residency (January 1st to December 31st) to become eligible for the dividend. You then applied in the spring of the next year to receive the dividend in October. This kept a lot of people from just moving up here for a short period just to collect the dividend checks.

And the State carefully check out any first time applicant for the dividend.

Did you know single-payer in Canada began in just one province?

Beating out Terry Fox, Pierre Trudeau, and Frederick Banting to be named the Greatest Canadian in a CBC poll is quite an accomplishment.

Tommy Douglas — who was at times labelled a “Red” and a “Communist” by his political opponents — won the honour largely for his belief that every Canadian deserved the right to have quality health care, regardless of their economic or social situation.

This conviction likely stemmed from his social gospel roots in Manitoba, and continued during his days as Premier of Saskatchewan and later as leader of the federal NDP.

“The Father of Medicare” saw his Medicare plan enacted in Saskatchewan in 1962 and later by the federal Pearson government in 1966. His social activism inspired many Canadians from coast to coast, including a conservative-minded history student from Nova Scotia.

I suppose we could implement a procedure where if one had filed in-state taxes the previous year, the following year one is eligible for state funded health care.

But I still think this is unnecessarily cumbersome.

This is where I think the idea of the negative tax can be resurrected. Given our modern digital infrastructure, we could submit our medical bills along with our monthly/quarterly tax statements and when the health bills get above n% of the income then we start getting tax back, up to the amount to cover the bills.

What we need to come to as a society is a reckoning on a very basic premise - are we going to share the wealth of our society with everyone in the society?

This doesn’t have to end in total income equality and property redistribution - the scare-scenario of COMMUNISM!! .

Rather, we can agree that the advancements of our society in the area of health-care can be made available to all on a scaled-pay basis.

That even that is scary to a big part of our country is puzzling, as we’ve already half-bought that idea with social security and the current budgeting of taxes to health care. Gov’t budgets already pay a non-trivial portion of all health care served in this country.

Don’t get me wrong. If we can figure out a way to get a supermajority of the voters of this country to agree to universal health care, and vote on it, and prevent it from being repealed, it would be very beneficial, even with the short term pain. And I would support it. California just needs to make sure they take into account what will happen to their economy, and what the other 282M people in America are going to do, not just with their feet, but with their votes.

79 Percent Of Americans Missing The Point Entirely

According to a Georgetown University study released Tuesday, 79 percent of Americans are missing the point entirely with regard to such wide-ranging topics as politics, consumerism, taxes, entertainment, fashion, and professional wrestling.

Despite the preponderance of evidence supporting its findings, the Georgetown study has drawn widespread criticism from the American public.

“If I want to miss the point, that’s my own business,” said Ernie Schayr, a Wheeling, WV, auto mechanic. “If I want to complain about having to pay taxes while at the same time demanding extra police protection for my neighborhood, that’s my right as an American. Most people in other countries don’t ever get the chance to miss the point, and that’s tragic. The East Timorese are so busy fleeing for their lives, they never have the chance to go to the supermarket during the busiest time of the week and complain to the cashier about how long the lines are and ask them why they don’t do something about it.”

Did you know single-payer in Canada began in just one province?

Tommy Douglas — who was at times labelled a “Red” and a “Communist” by his political opponents — won the honour largely for his belief that every Canadian deserved the right to have quality health care, regardless of their economic or social situation.

Supercool trivia — that’s Kiefer Sutherland’s grandfather.

I think, ultimately, it is going to take bringing the top CEO salaries down to earth from the stratosphere, and some decent tax rates on the super wealthy. We have shifted so far already in favor of the wealthy that it is going to be very hard to come back. Perhaps that needs to precede universal health care, or perhaps universal health care is a start to coming back. I’m not smart enough to know.

To tie this back into something brought up earlier, we need to start hearing from liberal church leaders - because Christianity has a major influence in this country - about how the worship of money is corrupting everything this country stands for. They need to be going after the prosperity gospel, and attacking the idea that a man’s status is measured by how much money he has.

Just pointing out that it would be a lot easier to switch our health care if we were at 5% of GDP rather than 17%. 1/6th of our economy is huge.

One big part of our health care costs:

Total prescription sales in the United States in the 2015 calendar year were $419.4 billion, which was 11.7% higher than sales in 2014.

ajhp.org

And, no big surprise—direct to consumer drug advertising skyrocketed from 2012-2015

Ad spending soared more than 60 percent in the last four years, hitting $5.2 billion last year…

Increasingly, critics are expressing concern that expenditures on advertising drive up the price of drugs.

They’re frustrated, too, when patients insist on getting the brand-name medication they’ve seen on TV, though other drugs might be more effective or less expensive, or both. Prescription drugs accounted for nearly 17 percent of total health care spending in 2015, up from about 7 percent in the 1990s, due in large part to rising prices for brand-name treatments, new federal data show.

Such concerns have prompted the American Medical Association to call for a ban on direct-to-consumer advertising.

Next they would have blasted the articles he wrote in the 70s about sex.

Then taking a page from the Stone playbook, Democrats for Trump (DFT) would have been set up with Joe LIEberman as the head and they would pummel Sanders over his proposed Defense cuts, they would go after his college proposal (Really? Everyone should have a right to college? Just imagine the DFT commercial showing a bunch of Venice Beach Punks while an announcer says “They would go to college and goof off for four years and stick you with the bill”).

Next we would have commercials from people in Canada claiming they wait years for surgery because the Single Payer System rations care.

Next they would have torn apart the Fight for $15.

Then they would have gone after Bernie for having multiple houses.

Next up—“Bernie won’t release his taxes”

Next up—“Bernie Lied about marching for Civil Rights”

Next—“Bernie and Jane Honeymooned in…GASP!…MOSCOW”

Next up—They would go after Jane Sanders bankrupting the college.

And then the nail in the coffin from Jill Stein as she would repeatedly bullshit about Bernie selling out.

And just imagine the attacks DFT would whip up if Bernie had Tulsi or Nina Turner as his running mates…

By the time the GOP and LIEberman finished with Sanders he would have been slaughtered even worse than McGovern and Mondale. Sanders would have wound up with only Vermont’s 3 electoral votes and DC’s 3. Republicans would have picked up Congressional and Senate seats.

Bernie glosses over the fact that Corbyn had a Secret Weapon during the close of the UK election campaign—Don Cornholio’s Tweets attacking the London Mayor. Those vicious racist Tweets galvanized the Labour Voters in the last week to come out in droves and boosted Corbyn.

If the election had been a week later, Corbyn would probably have won. Why? Well, President Cornholio would have kept Tweeting, that’s why!

Look how long things stopped dead after the Rs stopped “Hillary-care.”

I remember the Kennedy push for National Health Care when Nixon was in office 1973-74. Watergate killed that cold.

Then there were the Catastrophic Care Amendments Reagan signed that would have strengthened Medicare including covering RX and long term nursing care. But then AARP and the UAW turned against that because they already had better coverage. Still remember the mob chasing Rostenkowski down the street and throwing stones at him. Sure enough, Congress buckled and killed Catastrophic Care which pulled the rug out from people who needed it like my Mom.

Then Hillary tried again and thanks to liars led by The Tory Twit Andrew Sullivan in The New Republic and Michael Kelly in his propaganda rags, Betsy McCaughey was able to publish her lies about Hillary’s Managed Care proposal. Add in the CEO pimps pouring millions of dollars into California’s Single Payer ballot initiative in 1994 and Purity Ponies led by Ralph Nader, Single Payer was slaughtered in California the very night that the GOP succeeded in getting Congress.

So that killed Health Care reform for another 16 years…

Yes for those who do not remember or who weren’t around in the early 70s, there was a major push for National Health Insurance. Kennedy and Martha Griffiths led a fight for Single Payer. Other bills were sponsored by Republicans that were far more expansive than Hillary’s 1994 proposal.

Heck, Even the AMA got into the act supporting what they called “Medicredit” which would base what a person paid for medical care on what they paid in taxes.

Kennedy backed away from Single Payer and worked out a deal with Wilbur Mills to allow subsidies of private insurance plus catastriphic care. It came close to passage but then Nixon’s impeachment stole the spotlight and the chance was lost.

Carter briefly tried and Kennedy torpedoed his proposal as well.

Just filling in the blanks for people who didn’t know. Heck, Theodore Roosevelt proposed National Single Payer Health Insurance in 1912. Wilson attacked him for that saying that Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party believed in “Regulation” instead of “Reform”

Truman tried for National Health Insurance but was shot down with Lenore Baxter’s “Socialized Medicine” propaganda campaign…

Well, as Tina Turner says, “We NEVER do things nice and easy. We do it HARD and ROUGH…”

I mean in CA of all places we have time to cross the ts and dot the is and yet they haven’t even clarified how the hell they’re paying for this because to put a new tax in writing would increase the vote threshold required to 2/3s.

A public option makes so much more sense.

Regardless of implementation methods, again I propose the real problem is owning up to the bigger picture - do we as a society want to ensure that everyone in our society gets to enjoy the fruits of our society insofar as healthcare is concerned.

That can be asked in a straightforward manner. The answer is either yes or no.

That so many Americans implicitly give approval to the clique of right-wing elites who really believe that a hierarchical society is best, where there really is a type of social-darwinism going on, is due to long-standing fear mongering over socialism.

I was looking at one of those “surprising chronology” lists (“Oxford University is older than the Aztec Empire”). Since my birthday is coming up the 21st, I decided to look at its own historical context. My birthdate, in 1949, is closer to the presidency of Chester A. Arthur than to the present day. World War II had been over for less than 4 years when I was born. George Bernard Shaw was still alive at that time and Harry Truman was President of the United States. The first artificial satellite was 8 years in the future, the first Moon landing was 21 years away. The transistor had just been invented at Bell labs.
It is remarkable what one person’s lifetime can include, and more remarkable still that there are people who are more than 40 years older than I am.

Boris would be a joke, and a rather bad one at that. I have no idea what the Tories are going to do; Brexit negotiations are scheduled to begin on June 19th. If indeed the UK is headed for another election, the only thing they could do is ask the EU for another extension, to put off the negotiations until August or so and I’m pretty sure the EU is going to be experiencing an emotion between bemusement and exasperation.

Ice Cube did a nice job with his own explanation of who can use the word and why.

Thought some might like to see it.

As a Black woman, I don’t agree that Black people should be using the “N” word at all. It’s a derogatory term and I don’t understand why any of my fellow Black folks would want to use it in the first place. I cringe whenever I hear it regardless of who is saying it. re: #176 harlequinade

Yeah, no doubt about it, this is a gargantuan mess the Brits find themselves in. And all because of what started off about 20 or years ago as an internal Tory argument about the UK’s place in the EU. This argument was never internally resolved - the UKIPers were really just the public face of (largely) Tory anti-EU ideas.

Well that finally came to a head, and in one of the most epic blunders in modern times, former PM Cameron decided to hold a referendum, calculating that a win by the “Remain” forces would shut up UKIP once and for all. He miscalculated badly. Then he steps down ASAP, May comes in as PM and decides to go for a full-on Brexit. The irony in all this? This was a non-binding, advisory referendum.

My suggestion, though I’m sure it’d get me lynched in some parts of Britain? Revoke Article 50 and announce a new referendum, but this time a real one……..legally binding, with two provisos: First, there must be 60% voter turnout and second, 60% of voters must vote “Leave” for it to take effect.

At least this time, people will know it’s for all the marbles.

harlequinade  Jun 11, 2017 • 5:38:37am

re: #177 Dr Lizardo

The whole lead up to the referendum was horrifying. The belief that the conservatives wouldn’t win the general, so making a Referendum a pledge was easy to do.
And then be belief that it’d all be ok in a country where manufacturing had been destroyed, unemployment was rife, and every single piece of news about the EU was how awful it was.

I remember my wife waking me the next day saying, “We lost.” All I could think was - well, of course, what did they think would happen?

And all that followed: No one had a plan, because no one thought they’d need one. No one wanted to have to deal with the mess, so they all resigned really quickly, and putting the most rabid anti-EU politicians in control of negotiation.

And the fact that the Conservatives did what no one is meant to do - cozied up to the far right - in terms of UKIP, and enabled racists to get into power.
There was a comment in The Guardian on election day. A man had to get his wife from work because she’d been bullied by her work-mates. They were all going to vote conservative that afternoon, as one, because “They’d kick the pakis out.”

I now live in Denmark (which has a raft of its own problems) and there’s no way I’d go back home. It’s going to get a lot worse in the UK before it gets better.

Doesn’t sound like the DUP is fully in board.

A Downing Street statement on Saturday said a “confidence and supply” agreement had been reached with the DUP and would be put to the cabinet on Monday. But the DUP last night put the brakes on that announcement, saying talks were continuing, not finalised. The DUP leader, Arlene Foster, said “discussions will continue next week to work on the details and to reach agreement on arrangements for the new parliament”.

I’ll add that to honor Brexit in any way after the supporters (Boris and Farage, specifically) came out the day after the vote and explicitly stated that the NHS wasn’t going to get more $$ and that all their promises weren’t really real, THAT should have stopped Brexit immediately or at least set up a real referendum with specifics as the Dr stated above.

Why would Trump continually and obsessively keep playing his own courses? Is it that he’s fearful of looking bad at another course, so he keeps trying to hone his own course scores? Is it that he’s unimaginative?

Personally, I love to dive, but I get bored with doing the same sites and wrecks at certain locations. I would imagine that golf could be the same.

How is it that people in the UK seem to fully believe that they are going to get some fantastic deal from the EU to allow them everything but free movement? Is there something I am unaware of that gives them the tiniest of hopes? If so…what is it?

I’m sure Saint Bernard didn’t really think this through. An American politician hitching his wagon to Jeremy Corbyn is deeply stupid, especially in our toxic environment.

He also got himself in some hot water recently with how he asked a Trump nominee some questions about his religion. Now from what I’ve read, the thing was blown out of context but much like his honeymoon in the USSR, it’s something that the right would have a field day with. The BBs refuse to acknowledge Bernie’s own weaknesses as a candidate and just focus on hypothetical bs.

He’s calling on all the Opposition parties to bring down May. Now what happens if those 7 Northern Irish Sinn Fein MP’s actually come to Westminster and join the NO side?

May would go down.

Is there a possibility of a 1923 type scenario when the second largest party runs a minority Government (Ramsay Mac Donald did that briefly for Labour in 1923 with a Liberal veto on what he did).

re: #191 Dr Lizardo

I’m pretty damn sure it is a pre-requisite for Royal assent. May botched it yet again.

I’m not sure having an overall majority is necessary for forming a government. You could have the party with the largest number of seats running as a minority government. (Which the SNP has done in the past with the Scottish Government, and is effectively doing now, even though it’s supposed to be friendly with the Greens- there’s no official coalition.)

Theresa May could have asked the Queen permission to form the government on the basis the Conservatives are the only party that could form the government given the numbers, which is technically true, even if they need the DUP’s help. If you add up all the seats on the opposition side, they still don’t add up to an overall majority, and the DUP are very unlikely to want to get together with Labour as long as Jeremy Corbyn is leader, and even less likely to want to associate with the SNP.

Here’s the latest on my job hunt. It may be over. I was offered a job in a part of China where the retirement age for foreign teachers is 64. I’m still mulling it over, but it looks decent. It’ll be at a larger uni in a larger city (Zhengzhou in Henan province), but the pay is about the same as I’m getting here. IOW, not a wowzer of a job, but the only one that has presented itself in a concrete fashion so far. I mean, they’ve sent me a contract to sign already.

I applied for a job in the States, too. They said they wanted to fill the job in June, but would be willing to wait on me, after they review my CV. So, I sent my CV last week.

Guy who needs to review is out of the office for a week. So, I guess the post is either not that urgent to fill, or they found someone else.

I’ve had bad experiences with passive-aggressive education leaders, so perhaps the silence is an omen.

Sound familiar?

Britain’s class politics has been turned completely upside down in 2017. Wealthy professionals in leafy suburbs have swung behind a Labour leader who pledges to sharply increase their taxes, while it was struggling blue-collar workers in deprived and declining seats who were most attracted by the party of austerity cuts to public services and welfare.

Late to the party, but I noticed who go the spotlight for this post. There’s a Broadway play, recently adapted to a PBS drama, called King Charles III, imagining after the queen dies.

Charles rejects a bill sent over from parliament; just refuses to sign it and makes a big public fuss about his reasons. It sets off a whole huge crisis, the monarchy aren’t supposed to be rulers anymore, they’re ceremonial figureheads, and acting like he has any authority upsets everyone so much it may end with the entire monarchy removed.

The play ends with William and Kate (at Kate’s instigation; William doesn’t want to hurt his father’s feelings) maneuvering to force Charles to abdicate; William understands the proper division between Head of State and Head of Government.

One of the interesting things over the past couple of years has been the rise of Ruth Davidson since she first became leader of the Scottish Conservatives. She’s been grasping every opportunity when it’s came along, and the aftermath of this election is no exception.

She’s not directly involved in Westminster, (She’s the leader of the opposition in the Scottish Government, so she’d have to resign her MSP seat and stand as an MP to become directly involved in Westminster politics at any level, never mind become PM.) but as Scottish Conservative leader, she leads 13 Scottish MPs, and therefore securing her support is vital to the Conservatives majority at Westminster.

I certainly have been one who thought that Trump suffers from some form of dementia but after Comey’s testimony, I am not sure that diagnosis seems so clear cut. Trump had repeatedly said that Comey told him 3 times that he wasn’t under investigation, and Comey actually confirmed that aspect. Of course, its meaning was different from Trump’s understanding. But if he truly had dementia, would he be able to keep track of this? Trump’s private behavior with Comey seems more malign and deliberate than you would expect from someone with dementia.

Trump wants to control every situation and benefit financially from every activity. That’s enough to explain his interest in golfing only at his courses. One SC ruling that might lead to his resignation is if the SC rules that he is violating the emoluments clause — that may be sufficient for him to decide that it is not worth his while to continue as President since it would affect his bottom line.

Unless Democrats flip Congress, Trump will be with us and over us (ugh!!) until at least November 2020. Hopefully, I’m wrong about that but I don’t see Republicans lifting a finger to get him out of office.

I find it wholly amusing seeing “fake news” because it’s like a homing beacon to it being true.

From the article:

Farage said on Twitter it had taken him a long time to read the Guardian article because he was “laughing so much at this fake news”.

“This hysterical attempt to associate me with the (Vladimir) Putin regime is a result of the liberal elite being unable to accept Brexit and Trump,” he said.

“I consider it extremely doubtful that I could be a person of interest to the FBI as I have no connections to Russia.”

Hell, it just gets better and better, don’t it?

Theresa May is to be told the EU will take a year to draft a new mandate for its chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, effectively killing the Brexit negotiations, if she insists on discussing a future trade relationship at the same time as the UK’s divorce bill.

In a sign of growing impatience with the shambolic state of the British side of the talks, senior EU sources said that if London insisted on talking about a free trade deal before the issues of its divorce bill, citizens rights and the border in Ireland were sufficiently resolved, it would be met with a blunt response.

“If they don’t accept the phased negotiations then we will take a year to draw up a new set of negotiating guidelines for Barnier,” one senior EU diplomat said, adding that the EU could not understand Britain’s continued claim that it would be able to discuss trade and the divorce terms in parallel.

The EU’s 27 leaders formally agreed to give Barnier a narrow set of tasks at a summit in April and they have no intention of rethinking the so-called phased approach when they meet May at a European summit on 22-23 June.

Formal Brexit talks are due to begin on 19 June, the same day as the Queen’s speech, at which point it will be known whether May has secured the support of a majority of MPs for her policy agenda.

Dr Lizardo  Jun 11, 2017 • 8:46:44am

Now the Prime Minister of Ireland is speaking up; it’s not just Sinn Féin who’s unhappy with what PM May is doing.

Irish prime minister Enda Kenny expressed concern Sunday that a proposed alliance between Britain’s ruling Conservatives and Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) could pose a “challenge” to peace in the province.

“They discussed the outcome of the UK general election and the (British) prime minister outlined the proposed supply and confidence arrangement between her party and the DUP,” a spokesman for the Irish government said.

“The taoiseach (Kenny) indicated his concern that nothing should happen to put the Good Friday Agreement at risk and the challenge that this agreement will bring.”

Before the 1998 peace deal, Northern Ireland was plagued by violence over Britain’s control of the province.

The Good Friday accords led to a power-sharing arrangement between nationalist, largely Catholic parties who want to join Ireland and the pro-British Protestant community.

Kenny also “noted the absence of any nationalist voice in Westminster”, after Northern Ireland’s Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) lost its three seats in Thursday’s election.

Yeah, I’m old enough to remember all the promises that there would be this massive schism at the Convention when Hillary was nominated. That “millions” of Democrats would march out to join the Greens and Bernie would join forces with Jill Stein to promote a “true progressive” ticket.

Then Bernie realized that he wants to keep his seat and gave about as lukewarm an “endorsement” as he could get away with.

Everything old is new again:

Ivanka on Friday: The administration will launch “a series of initiatives” and will call on Congress “to pass reforms expanding apprenticeships and raise awareness about the fact there are important, very viable career paths outside of the traditional four-year college experience,” she said.

What a great idea…

(from 2015)
President Obama is betting on apprenticeships to help bridge the job skills gap. His administration set aside $175 million in grants — the largest ever federal grant program for apprenticeships.

So they are going to put Boris Johnson, the other guy who lied them into Brexit, in charge?

Maybe that poll noted above was regular people not party people.

How can any Brit stand him after his BS about national healthcare? I mean he’s the one, along with Farage, who literally the day after the Brexit vote were on television saying they didn’t really mean all the stuff they said before the vote. Most people call that lying and lying SHOULD mean you don’t get to continue your career as if nothing happened.

Maybe someone could start a campaign like “It’s on his hat !”, with “It’s on his bus!”

To be fair, she probably doesn’t really need a formal East wing staff. I don’t see her doing a lot of the normal duties they are usually used for. But maybe they will try to use her presence there now as a normalizing agent as Mueller fires up the investigation.

Yep—they’re trying to sell her presence in DC (if it ever really happens) as a warm and fuzzy plus for the yam. I have no more use for her and her birther bullshit, her original plan to monetize being first lady and her “boys will be boys—Billy Bush goaded him into being an asshole” than I do for her horrible husband.
