And Now, an Awesome Live Set by Ninet Tayeb

Bob Boilen | March 3, 2017 — Ninet rocked the Tiny Desk in ways rarely seen.

As I watched one of the most famous entertainers in Israel today here at NPR, I flashed back to a 1976 concert I saw by a not-yet-famous Joan Jett. Ninet has that same fierce and honest conviction, is walking that same path that Jett did and poised to find notoriety in this country, which she recently began to call home.

Ninet won me over during a small concert at last year’s SXSW; it was early in the day, but she was fully on fire and intense. She and her potent band have put out five albums and their most recent, Paper Parachute, is the home of the songs she brought to us. It’s filled with a her husky-toned voice and guitar lines straight out of stateside ’70s rock, with a Middle Eastern lean. It’s a winning sound, performed by an unrestrained talent.

Paper Parachute is available now:
iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/paper-parachute/id1184684307
Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4D4O8S/?tag=littlegreenfo-20

Set List
“Child”
“Elinor”
“Superstar”

Musicians
Ninet Tayeb (vocals, guitar); Joseph E-Shine Mizrahi (guitar, backing vocals); Matt McJunkins (bass, backing vocals); Doron Kochli (keys); Yotam Weiss (drums, percussion)

Credits
Producers: Bob Boilen, Niki Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Niki Walker, Morgan Noelle Smith, Bronson Arcuri; Production Assistant: A Noah Harrison; Photo: Marian Carrasquero/NPR.

And Charles Dickens.

Scrooge started back, appalled. Having them shown to him in this way, he tried to say they were fine children, but the words choked themselves, rather than be parties to a lie of such enormous magnitude.

“Spirit! are they yours?” Scrooge could say no more.

“They are Man’s,” said the Spirit, looking down upon them. “And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. Deny it!” cried the Spirit, stretching out its hand towards the city. “Slander those who tell it ye! Admit it for your factious purposes, and make it worse! And bide the end!”

“Have they no refuge or resource?” cried Scrooge.

“Are there no prisons?” said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words. “Are there no workhouses?”

Here’s a positive development:

“…The design works via massive floating booms that sit on top of the water and act like a mini-coastline. Just like beaches collect our plastic waste, the boom can passively gather plastic waste and pull it to its center. Once a month or so, a boat would go collect the garbage.
………..
One of those .6 mile-long segments will be sent out for testing later this year, and the full system should be ready two years ahead of schedule. That’s important, because as Slat points out in the video above, right now just 3 percent of the plastics in his team’s surveys are microplastics — most are still large enough pieces that are easy to fish out.”

Sometimes I find myself losing my breath and just kinda staring off into the ether when my mind manages to capture how screwed up our supposed chief executive is. Usually Im only processing it in topical pieces but the whole of it is crazy and I physiologically react. He’s a sociopath, an abuser and every manifestation of our worst nightmare given unchecked power. He’s a malignant agent damaging certain demos very acutely and more generally, attacking the national drive for a more perfect union.

He’s also a traitor, beholden to a hostile foreign power.

I’ll let Sarah Kendzior answer that:

As she’s said before, one reason GOPers are gleefully pushing out all this toxic shit is because they don’t expect free and fair elections - they expect voter suppression on steroids, a divided and disaffected Democratic base, and gerrymandering to keep them in power no matter what.

We already know 62 million GOPers have the mentality of reddit/4chan/fox/stormfront trolls and vote accordingly. So sane people better come up with a coherent and workable plan to outnumber and outvote them.

re: #97 Interesting Times

We don’t get bored. Especially not this time. There is sooooooo much going on. We are trying.

If the media isn’t covering the outrage it doesn’t exist maybe? Like Clinton focusing on policy during the campaign as just one example. Meanwhile how many stories on Cheeto voters still supporting Cheeto do we get?

Nope.

Outrage fatigue is real. I was just thinking, before I opened my laptop to check the internet, how my views on politics have changed over the last few decades…

During Reagan’s years, Politics was a chance to get laid. I went to political rallies with other college kids and didn’t think about what it meant to be Republican/Democrat/Peace & Freedom…

During Bush 41, it was about fear - it was the first ‘war’ that we entered voluntarily that I was aware of.

During Clinton’s terms, it was about progress and protecting liberties from the evil religious right.

During Bush 43, it was about war again, only anger at wars of choice, bad forethought (or none at all as the case was), and the environment.

Obama’s years were about hope and disappointment. So much more we could have accomplished.

Now, it’s a mix of entertainment (which pains me more than I realized) and cynicism and outrage. I am ashamed at how much I ‘enjoy’ (enjoy is the wrong word but I’m using it anyway) the shit show that is the Trump administration. Never has failure to understand one’s job been so relieving…imagine how devastating he’d be if he knew what he was doing. I’m cynical because I don’t believe our country is mature enough to properly deal with Trump, and I’m outraged that we have to hope the GOP comes around.

Anyhoo…those are my thoughts before bed. Thanks for reading.

I think that’s the purpose of the exercise, to create more victims of ISIS.

Loyalty: it’s a one way street.

I totally misread that as “a one way tweet”.

re: #100 Interesting Times

So their strategy is not free or fair? Cool. Grant us that handicap. Then look at all the other bullshit we’re dealing with. Decades of it for the default demo and centuries for others. Lots of residual stuff being reignited.

How do you fight gutting of the VRA (legally, institutionally) tag-teamed with a hostile foreign power throwing shit all up in your front yard (unprecedented)? Yet we do fight on.

The resistance is real and fighting it’s ass off. Even Osoff. If one’s assessment of this shit storm doesn’t go heads up with the media, the GOP, the financial and historical disadvantages we’re dealing with it seems a bit like the easy road out. That might be where the disengaged and fatigued argument needs to be pointed…

…And it mirrors the damn campaign. It was so easy to refute the fake ‘Dems aren’t this or that’ arguments then because it was built on the same mountain of bullshit. Hell, I see enough engagement here to know it’s more about dynamics of power and who can amplify what. So we do what we can to counter that. This is something Sarah knows and loves about her hometown. She amplifies that.

So sane people better come up with a coherent and workable plan to outnumber and outvote them.

That’s us. The sane people is us. “We” is the word.

Also—the fucking American Conservative was quite fond of this iteration of Julius Caesar.

Director Rob Melrose has set his Caesar at our precise historical moment, in Obama’s Washington, D.C. The capital is rocked by “Occupy Rome” protests. His Caesar (the suavely confident Bjorn DuPaty) is a tall, charismatic African-American politician; he doesn’t look or sound much like Obama (he more closely recalls Michael Jordan), but the audience is unquestionably going to read him as an Obama stand-in nonetheless, particularly when his opponents bear a marked resemblance to Eric Cantor (Sid Solomon’s snappy terrier Cassius) and Mitch McConnell (Kevin Orton’s cynical old pol Casca). Even Mark Antony is recognizable as a standard Democratic politician type, Clinton/Gore division. This could all come off as very cheap and obvious, but it doesn’t for two reasons.
