An absolute disaster has apparently unfolded in London overnight; a 24-storey apartment tower caught fire and from video I’ve been seeing around the British news sites, the place went up like a bomb.

bbc.com

There are multiple reports from survivors that they heard no fire alarm in the building.

This could be truly horrific.

ETA: It seems that thus far, according to London Emergency Services, only 30 or so people made it out. An apartment tower like that could easily accommodate a few hundred. :(

From what I’ve been reading, the residents have been complaining for quite some time that safety standards in the building are wholly inadequate. Sadly, their complaints were apparently ignored.

One report I heard was that during the remodeling during the past 2 years a “skin” was added to the exterior of the building to improve the appearance. If there were no “fire blocks” between floors then the skin would act like a chimney and move the fire rapidly from the second floor to the upper levels.

Yeah; I’m wondering if it was like the cladding on that apartment block that went up in Dubai a few months back. Some kind of aluminium cladding IIRC - basically, the stuff goes up like a Roman candle.

The landlord is the Kensington and Chelsea council tenant management organisation (known as KCTMO). It is an independent corporation that manages housing owned by the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The board consists of 8 elected residents, 3 members appointed by the Borough, and 3 independent members. Their website has nothing about the fire or anything else later than May 18. Their twitter feed is also silent, with nothing later than the 10th.

With irate residents having actually predicted this disaster, the KCTMO board members and other fatcats are in a world of shit.

Here’s an image of the layout of Grenfell Tower; four-bedroom units, four to a floor and you’ll notice only one emergency stairwell. In a 24-storey building.

A disaster waiting to happen.

re: #23 goddamnedfrank

How is that even legal fire code in the UK?

It was built in the 1960s - fire code was likely different back then and if it’s been updated (I hope it’s been updated since then) there was probably a grandfather clause or something.

Edit - completed in 1974.

Yeah. Looking it up, it seems the cladding used when the exterior was renovated was plastic with thermal insulation.

Plastic. Which is, of course, quite flammable. What could possibly go wrong, huh?

Live coverage at The Guardian.

London fire commissioner Dany Cotton is giving a statement. She said fire fighters arrived within six minutes.

She confirms that there have been a number of fatalities. She could not confirm numbers because of the complexity of the building.

30
Shiplord Kirel  Jun 14, 2017 • 12:05:10am

Fire Commissioner Cotton’s statement:

This is an unprecedented incident. In my 29 years of being a firefighter I have never ever seen anything of this scale. Firefighters are working very hard at the moment.

This is a major fire that effected all floors of this 24 storey building from the second floor upwards. I have over 200 of my firefighters and officers attending this incident, with 40 fire engines and a range of specialist vehicles, including 14 fire rescue units. We declared this a major incident very early this morning … the first call coming in at 12.54. Our first fire engines were on the scene in under six minutes.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus and extended duration breathing apparatus have been working in extremely challenging and very difficult conditions to rescue people and bring this major fire under control.

London Ambulance Service have confirmed that 30 people have been taken to five hospitals.

I am very sad to confirm that there have been a number of fatalities. I cannot confirm the number at this time due to the size and complexity of this building. It would clearly be wrong for me to speculate further.

Equally the cause of this fire is not known at this stage.

We are working very closely with our colleagues in the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service to bring this situation under control.

Further information will be made available shortly including advice for those concerned about those who are working here and people who live here.

6 people confirmed dead

The Met Police has confirmed that six people were killed and the number is expected to rise.
Commander Stuart Cundy, from the Metropolitan Police, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this truly shocking fire at Grenfell Tower.

“I can confirm six fatalities at this time but this figure is likely to rise during what will be a complex recovery operation over a number of days. Many others are receiving medical care.”

Expect much worse. Firefighters are only now beginning to enter the building to start sifting through debris.

I’m back, after my Internet service is restored following:

a) A farmer dug through a bunch of cables
b) Tornadoes in my county the other day.

My phone company of course says they won’t refund money for Acts of Nature, because they are not responsible. If I like, I can go to Delaware for corporate arbitration for the ten bucks or so lost on the second. As for the first, not their problem.

Newspaper articles yesterday and today with the tornadoes in my county (my village was spared the heavy weather - Bayard is about thirty miles across the county):

Kimball Reports Seven Tornadoes in Monday’s Storms - Other Wyobraska Communities Affected (Kimball, Neb.)
Prairie Center Family Survives Second Tornado (Torrington, Wyo.)
Bayard Cleaning Up after Tornado Rips Through Town (Bayard, Nebr., in my county)

(All go to the Scottsbluff Star-Herald, with photographs of the damage. Photos in Bayard include aerial photos of the city of 800)

Some encouraging analysis from fivethirtyeight

On Dec. 4 last year, less than a month after Donald Trump had defeated Hillary Clinton, Austria held a revote in its presidential election, which pitted Alexander Van der Bellen, a liberal who had the backing of the Green Party, against Norbert Hofer of the right-wing Freedom Party. In May 2016, Van der Bellen had defeated Hofer by just more than 30,000 votes — receiving 50.3 percent of the vote to Hofer’s 49.7 percent — but the results had been annulled and a new election had been declared.

So what happened? Van der Bellen won by nearly 8 percentage points. Not only did Hofer receive a smaller share of the vote than in May, but he also had fewer votes despite a higher turnout. Something had caused Austrians to change their minds and decide that Hofer’s brand of populism wasn’t such a good idea after all.

I’m cautiously optimistic about the following observation:

The same two candidates were on the ballot, but in the intervening period Trump had won the American election and the United Kingdom had voted to leave the European Union. If the populist tide were rising, Hofer should have been able to overcome his tiny deficit with Van der Bellen and win. Instead, he backslid. It struck me as a potential sign that Trump’s election could represent the crest of the populist movement, rather than the beginning of a nationalist wave

We’ve had violent people in the past. Now it seems to be accepted that it is normal. As a kid I felt pretty safe growing up, even in the “unsafe” parts of town. Not anymore. What with open carry, road rage and the like I no longer feel that way.

Seriously though. What the hell is happening?

The incident is over now: either the police or the Congressmens’ security detail “took the shooter down”. The shooter is in custody, five victims are in the hospital with various wounds

I just heard a recitation of events from Rep Brooks (AL) who was there on CNN: it sounds like they were just having a bit of fielding practice when a guy with a rifle showed up at the fence and turned the field into a war zone. Whip Scalise was apparently hit in the hip as he stood at second base: Brooks said he left a trail of blood as he crawled into the field . Fortunately one of the Reps was a doctor.
Man, this is a weird story.

Erie Canal’s bicentennial year

When Thomas Jefferson first caught wind of plans for the Erie Canal, the president scoffed. A 363-mile waterway carved from Albany to Buffalo, linking the Hudson River to the Great Lakes, hauling commerce along the way? That seemed “a little short of madness” — or so goes a tale much recounted in the two centuries since.

lawhawk  Jun 14, 2017 • 6:00:45am

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

I’ve been following Twitter and the reports of the mass shooting at a baseball practice where members of Congress and staffers were playing. Rep. Scalise was shot, as were several staffers and members of the Capitol Police. The suspect is apparently in custody, but as always, early reports can and often are wrong.

Take them all with a grain of salt.

Security is tightened at the Capitol and the Legislative office buildings.

It’s just another day in America, where mass shootings are a regular occurrence. Attempted political assassinations haven’t changed the gun availability culture/mindset either. Recall, Congress did nothing in the wake of Gabby Giffords being targeted. Don’t expect any different with Scalise being shot here.

Nearly 12,000 are murdered every year, many by people they know (family, friends, acquaintances). Even more commit suicide with guns.

The health care toll is in the billions every year from the wages of firearms violence, and it’s a lasting cost for many. Add to that the criminal justice costs/incarceration, and the personal toll on those who lose loved ones to gun violence.

Yup. In the tornadoes the other day, no people were killed but a whole bunch of cattle were. That will cost a bunch of money. In addition, a lot of agricultural infrastructure was damaged in Kimball, Banner, Morrill, and Box Butte counties here. The damage estimates here are likely to be in the millions, even without the addition of the overturned train and torn up railroad tracks.

Yeah, it’s John Nolte. Looks like LOLGOP got pwned.

Just ignore that there was nothing stopping any of those members from Congress from owning or carrying firearms in Virginia. In fact, VA has some of the most lax gun laws on the East Coast (they are a substantial source of firearms that are used in crimes elsewhere on the East Coast, especially in NYC). VA has a far higher per capita firearms death rate than NY too. That’s a correlation that the GOP/NRA don’t want people to realize. NY has a far larger population than VA, and yet VA saw more killed by firearms than NY did.

One for Sergei on Holocaust denial:

German Media Refers to “Polish Death Camp” Again (goes to Radio Poland in English, more at the link)

Polish diplomats have said they will protest after a German newspaper described the Sobibor German Nazi WWII death camp as a “Polish” camp.
Photo: Azymut (Rafał M. Socha), Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0Photo: Azymut (Rafał M. Socha), Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Describing an exhibition by Otto Freundlich, a painter and sculptor of Jewish origin, the German Badische Zeitung daily said that he was killed in a “Polish” camp in 1943.

Poland’s Consul General in Munich, Andrzej Osiak, told Polish Radio that diplomats would “intervene in this matter.”

Anna Wawrzyszko, vice-president of a Polish association in Germany, said: “Writing about a ‘Polish’ camp today, when we mark the National Day of Remembrance of Victims of German Nazi Concentration Camps and Extermination Camps, is extremely distressing for Poles.”

The use of the term “Polish concentration camp” by international media outlets has sparked numerous complaints from Poland in recent years, prompting some news agencies to change their style guidelines.

In 2007, following a Polish request, the World Heritage Committee attempted to clarify the matter by listing the Auschwitz camp as a “German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp”.

I have to take my car in for maintenance—about a 2 hour job. I was just going to hang in the waiting area and lurk LGF, do some work. But I suspect the TV will be on Fox, so I think I’ll take the iPod, go for a walk and listen to some podcasts. Between London and VA shooting, it’s a very bad day indeed.

Smart move.

A couple more, courtesy of Dylan’s pedal steel player…

Q: What’s the difference between a banjo and a chainsaw?
A: You can play a ballad on a chainsaw.

Q: What’s the difference between a banjo and an onion?
A: Nobody cries when you cut up a banjo.

My favorite:
Q: What’s the difference between a banjo and a vacuum cleaner?
A: You can pull the dirt bag off a vacuum cleaner.

I’ve got a bass player joke I like too, but heading out so I won’t type it now…got to tell it to Phil Lesh once. He laughed.

Amazing how quickly the right wing nutters are jumping on the bandwagon that it was a Democrat or leftist who was behind the shooting based on early assertions/claims - or no evidence at all.

Well, no not amazing. It’s groupthink combined with the ability to demonize entire political parties as an enemy, using the language of their standard bearer Trump (who did the same thing throughout his campaign and since being in the WH).

Well, as the article notes, Poland has been ramping up complaints about this. (When it was under Communist rule, the Party generally didn’t bother with the Holocaust at all.)

It also notes several news agencies upon receipt of requests to change their reporting have updated their style manuals to note they were Nazi concentration and extermination camps, not Polish.

(The style manual my publisher uses, though they deal with Romance stories and not the Holocaust, also notes that they should be referred to as Nazi camps if the issue comes up.)

Yes, and it duly reflects the nature of the silencer discussion/debate. Might be the most fact free part of the entire gun capacity/type/configuration debate as gun laws are made. To be clear, I don’t have objections to the California ban on them. The abuse and lack of facts in that process just leaves an awful taste anyway.

And the argument then devolves into “what constitutes crazy idiot.” Who makes those determinations? What information could be included? A social media post? A witness from twenty years ago? The argument would get lost in the weeds.

I’m for titling guns like homes and cars. You sell it, you make damn sure the title is transferred because the name on the title is the first person the cops go to. Stolen? You make damn sure there’s a police report. Untitled? Fine (and you don’t get it back until it is titled).

For safety, enact the NRA’s exact gun safety rules for negligent handling of a gun. Watch the NRA twist up in knots disavowing their own rules.

Would that stop all shootings, of course not, just as drunk drive laws don’t stop drunk driving. It gives you the tools to punish non-compliance.

The right’s logic on gun violence is “You’re never going to prevent all acts of gun violence so why even try.” It’s absurd. Have seat belts, air traffic safety regs, bicycle and motorcycle helmets completely eliminated accidents and tatalieis involving those? No, they have not but they have noticeably reduced them. There’s an often cited anecdote referencing WWI that head injuries went up after the introduction of helmets. It was people were in fact surviving more head injuries. It’s kind of why “autism has gone up so much”, we know more now.

If your home is not set up well enough to buy you time to do the right thing, you are doing it wrong. Geez technology makes good security so much easier than in the past. I mean too many would say $900 Sig Sauer good, $600 encrypted wireless cameras with face recognition and motion algorithms are a waste of money. No need for that monthly monitoring. Good doors and windows that lock, SimpliSafe and 911. So few need more than that.

Clinton’s Ditch (DeWitt Clinton, that is).

It was one of the keys to opening up economic development to the West of the original Colonies, turned NYC into the major shipping hub in the country, and transformed how the nation communicates and travels. While it was quickly superseded by railroads, it showed how transportation would go on to shape the development of the nation (it is now operated by the NYS Thruway Authority and nearly all traffic on the canal is for pleasure/personal, not commercial/cargo purposes).

The canal quickly paid back its debt and became a huge revenue generator for NY and the federal government.

The canal also ended up being used as part of the Underground Railroad to help escaping slaves make it to Canada.

You need, thinking about it, I wonder how Shakespeare got away with making a play which included a political assassination. You’d think the Crown would spike it, wouldn’t you?

I was thinking about that reading Richard II in college. I really thought Shakespeare was inspired by the events of Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots, two other royal cousins with another who met their end with a wink and nudge by the cousin.

Encrypted wireless cameras … to do what? Unlock the doors of my hundred three year old house? To broadcast where? To my home computer because that’s the only thing they could reach.

To replace all my doors and windows would cost far more than I have in money. (Getting anyone out to where I live costs a bunch even before they do the work.) I don’t know what SimpliSafe is (sounds expensive).

The sheriff’s office is sixteen miles away with one deputy and one car. I’m guessing right now they are over in Bayard dealing with the aftermath of the tornadoes (see the videos and articles above). We got nothin’ here. (That might be why there are more guns in this town than people, not counting the gun shop.)

Get rid of the bots, then Twitter will be forced to deal with the fact that it’s been protecting racists.

I hope it’s understood my point is general. Sizes vary. Maybe like you I got guns before SimpliSafe existed. Or the internet but who cares.

Imagine for a second you have not yet bought the guns. Look about and imagine the same money spent on making it a more difficult place to break into quietly and easily instead first. Then of course one must consider the likelihood of serious trouble.

By all means add it up and do whats right for you and your location. If the equation comes up to include that shotgun, I have zero objection.

Off to work bbl

The “mainstream” media’s problem is that they’re attempting to compete with social media. The thing is, there’s no competition there; social media will always, always be a faster source of information than traditional media. Where they can distinguish themselves is in providing reliable, factual, sourced reporting, as opposed to the unsourced bullshit that flows freely from Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately, they’d rather get caught up in the “scoop cycle” and try to outgun Twitter (ironically, by using it as a primary source), rather than deliver quality reporting.

Lots of different ways to classify military and military-style weapons. But the general classifications are: submachine guns ( fully automatic that fire pistol rounds), assault rifles (usually magazine fed and fire rifle rounds), and machine gun variants (fire a wide range of rifle and large caliber rounds, usually belt fed, and fully automatic).

Carbine and assault rifle are largely interchangeable; the difference is a carbine has a shorter barrel for close-in combat or weight, at the expense of accuracy. (Strictly, an assault rifle has selective fire and detachable magazines - the term was invented by Hitler interestingly enough.) A carbine can be an assault rifle but can be a single-fire rifle (even something like a bolt-action rifle).

AR-15’s have detachable magazines but are not selective fire. (They can be modified for that though, which makes the term somewhat grey - however, since they meet all the other features, it’s really a distinction without a difference.)

There was a post on his Facebook page that he was not at his job as of 12/2016. We’ve discussed the desperation of people who brought trump to the fore. This could equally be a level of desperation for someone who lost his job, is looking at losing healthcare…who knows.

Rather than spend money on tacticool gear, I’d rather spend money at the skeet range. In a crunch of home defence (not likely here, but again, no police anywhere near here) I don’t think it would make any difference if I was dressed in camouflage or my underwear.

Personally I would prefer we didn’t have the 2nd Amendment, but as the probability of getting a new Amendment that strikes the 2nd is exactly on 0, we simply live with what we have.

Trump, again, is more a symptom than a cause.

It also notes several news agencies upon receipt of requests to change their reporting have updated their style manuals to note they were Nazi concentration and extermination camps, not Polish.

Found the original article: badische-zeitung.de
It has already been corrected, with an explicit note at the end. This seems to be a small local paper and was probably an unintentional case of bad wording. Can’t vouch for any other cases, of course.

The Poles are perfectly in their rights to complain about these incidences and to request accurate wording.

Or they have the wrong person.

Is there a credible news source that the Facebook account referenced is the same person? A police statement? A confession from the shooter?

Washington Post is fake news? It said he owned a home inspection company. One of the Facebook profiles states: “Former Owner at JTH Inspections”. The name is an obvious initialism of his own name.

The same story stated he lived in Belleville, Illinois (population 43,765). Ditto Facebook.

How many people with the name James T. Hodgkinson, who owned an inspection company, live in Belleville, Illinois?

During the ratification process, a lot was said at the various state conventions that actually did go with that view. Early Federalist America was deeply, deeply suspicious of keeping a standing army because of the horribly experiences under the British and also because of a particularly American view that equated civic virtue with unpaid militia who fought to preserve the Republic…while a professional paid soldiery where often viewed as despots, mercenaries and such. Lots and LOTS of period documentation to this effect, and it lead to a general under appreciation of the fact that the professional Continental Army had won the war, not the militia.

So the militia were still viewed as the ultimate defender and representative of Republican virtue while professional military forces languished in obscurity. This pattern more or less dominated until the Civil War. In any event, you can find plenty of period documentation to the effect that many people at the time felt the American militiaman would use his flintlock weapon to depose any tyrant and restore proper Republicanism should the need arise..and it was just as false then as now since it was based on a fallacious understanding of how the war was waged (by professionals) and won (by professionals).

Wow. My good buddy the dog trainer and I were talking Monday night about dogs near pools and how unsafe that is for them as they have no way of climbing up over an edge like that. They need a ramp so they can walk out…like how the ground goes down into a lake or pond naturally. He said dogs will panic and drown and people think too often dogs can swim, so no problem. The video shows that and thankfully the cop/security guy was there to help the dog.

Regarding the Grenfell Tower fire, this (at least to me) sounds ominous in it’s own British way……

Met commander Stuart Cundy, breaking the news that the death toll has doubled, said:

“It’s very, very challenging to put a number on those unaccounted for.”

He also noted that he “doesn’t expect to find any more survivors.”

There’s also reports that suggest that people living in the building were warning that it was a deathtrap even before the fire and that there were issues even despite the building getting rehabbed ending last year.

I’m rather surprised at the seeming lack of sprinklers and fire doors that could have contained the fire.

But speaking of wich, anyone have some good tips for Munich, Nuremberg, Berlin, Amsterdam, & Bruges? I pretty much have my ideas but am open to suggestions.

Berlin, take the English tour of the entire city. You will see lots of cool WW2 things (Check Point Charlie, where Hitler off’d himself, etc.).

Bruges, just walk around the entire city. It’s old and beautiful and not huge.

Amsterdam, a river cruise (cheap) which goes all around the city and acts as an Hop On Hop Off taxi with a tour guide (you get to see where Mata Hari lived, and stuff like that). Anne Frank house, for sure. Red Light District. The Torture Museum and the Sex Museum (no, they are not the same :D) Get off at all the stops and walk around. It’s an awesome place!

Concentration camps around several cities. Munich has the BMW home office/museum which is kinda cool. I didn’t find Munich as interesting as the others, though.

Yeah, I’ve been reading that since I first heard about it this morning my time. The residents had been complaining that there innumerable safety issues and they were pretty much blown off.

Regarding sprinklers, the building was owned by the city council (sorta like Section 8 housing in the USA) and while the subject came up of retrofitting the building with a fire suppression system, the local council stated it couldn’t afford to do that.

*sigh*

In the 16+ years (yeah we used something from Novell before that) I’ve used Outlook at work I’ve never failed to be amazed at how Outlook’s meeting function can take something simple and just mess it up completely. I mean, I’ve been removed as the owner of my own meeting (making moving or cancelling the meeting impossible) or had meetings scheduled in Outlook otherwise go haywire.

We have a daily standing technology review meeting at 8 am and our team runs it. One of my coworkers actually owns the meeting and is in charge of adding/removing people from the attendees. Today he got a request to add someone. So he did. God only knows what Outlook was thinking, because it sent out two cancellations (which did nothing) and an informational email confirming the meeting is still at 8 am to everyone on the list.

I messaged my coworker and let him know what Outlook had done so he would know that no, the meeting had not been cancelled even though two cancellations had gone out. He replied that now he was getting requests from people to be removed from the meeting (this has a huge distribution list) and he was afraid to touch Outlook because he didn’t know what it was going to do next. I totally understand.

At least we changed conferencing systems a few years back. When we had [large company that begins with C]’s conferencing system, we had to use a wonky Outlook plugin to schedule the meetings. Now, with [different vendor]’s system, we can open our lines whenever without having to schedule them. Through Outlook.

At 1:00 in the morning local time. When everyone (or almost everyone) would have been asleep.

No fire suppression system. No fire alert system. Residents told to shelter in place until the fire department rescues them. One stairwell in the center of the building.

It was about as much of a death trap as could have been constructed.

I’ve also seen some speculation (and, to be sure it is just that), that the rehab job aggravated the firetrap situation (due to the materials used(?)) and/or badly-performed upgrades (?wiring? ?plumbing?).
Also: apparently, sprinklers were not/are not required by the building codes in force when Grenfell Tower was built: neither when renovated.

And they did, seemingly, have fire doors: it’s just that their fire-safety procedures were planned for “domestic” fires (stove/appliance fires and the like) contained in the flats: not the whole building going up.

I think we saw the best possible outcome in a situation with a shooter. The element of surprise allowed him to get off some rounds. Trained people responded, limiting the casualties. To many non-professional people with guns would have made this much worse. Imaging the police not knowing who the shooter was.

Regarding sprinklers, the building was owned by the city council (sorta like Section 8 housing in the USA) and while the subject came up of retrofitting the building with a fire suppression system, the local council stated it couldn’t afford to do that.

Sometimes science brings us an extra cautionary result.
gizmodo.com

After the space-exposed worms returned to Earth, researchers prepared a second set of worms that were then exposed to the same changes in temperature as the space-exposed worms. These worms were used for the mass spectroscopic analysis.

After five weeks in space, the samples were evaluated immediately upon their return and over the course of 20 months. Through an array of behavioral, microbiological, and morphological tests, the researchers identified a number of differences between the space and terrestrial worms.

Most surprising, researchers discovered that one of the amputated fragments sent to space regenerated into a rare double-headed worm. In more than 18 person-years of maintaining a colony of D. japonica that involves more than 15,000 control worms in just the last five years alone, the Tufts researchers have never observed a spontaneous occurrence of double-headedness. Moreover, when the researchers amputated both heads from the space-exposed worm, the headless middle fragment regenerated into a double-headed worm, demonstrating that the body plan modification that occurred in the worm was permanent.

Travel to my west is restricted from the tornado damage. (I wasn’t planning on going anywhere today anyway.) The road between the county seat and Scottsbluff is damaged near Bayard (plus the damage around Bayard).

Emergency services in my county (which are very thin) are stretched today. My village’s volunteer fire brigade (which normally only covers the village and the extreme rural east of the county) is on watch to help throughout the area today since the Bridgeport fire department is in Bayard and Bayard’s fire department is still digging out. Our village ambulance is on standby for the whole county as well.

They are looking at the exterior cladding as the conduit to why it went up so quickly.

news.sky.com

Key pieces of the article:

Fire safety experts say Grenfell Tower’s exterior will be the main focus for investigators examining the rapid spread of the blaze, called “unprecedented” by London’s fire commissioner.

While no cause of the blaze has officially been determined, witnesses have described how flames lapped up and around the 24-storey tower block at alarming speed with one saying it took just 15 minutes for the fire to climb 17 floors.

Others said recently erected cladding, which experts say is attached to the outside of a building to help with weather-proofing and improve its look, was falling to the ground in flames.

The specification of the new (£8.6m) exterior, usually a coating or covering, is not known … One local, Mohamed Bouya, who witnessed the fire take hold, told Sky News: “They’ve refurbished it with loads of plastic, loads of these plastic boards going down the sides of the thing to make the building look nice.”

Design specifications seen by the Press Association suggest the renovation work carried out at Grenfell Tower included a 50mm “ventilated cavity” next to 150mm of Celotex FR5000 insulation.

This insulation, according to Celotex, has a Class 0 rating under UK building regulations, meaning it has the highest rating for preventing the spread of flames and prevents the spread of heat.

Construction firm Rydon, which carried out the refurbishment of the tower, said in a statement that its work “met all required building control, fire regulation, and health and safety standards”.

The Clash wrote about it long ago.

The Clash - Up in Heaven (not only here)

The towers of London, these crumbling rocks
Reality estates that the hero’s got
And every hour’s marked by the chime of a clock

And whatcha gonna do when the darkness surrounds?
You can piss in the lifts which have broken down
You can watch from the debris, the last bedroom light
We’re invisible here just past midnight

And the wives hate their husbands and their husbands don’t care
Their children daub slogans to prove they lived there
A giant pipe organ up in the air

You can’t live in a home which should not have been built by the bourgeoise clerks who bear no guilt
When the wind hits this building, this building it tilts
One day it will surely fall to the ground

Fear is just another commodity here
They sell us peeping holes to peek when we hear
A bang on the door resoundingly clear

Who would really want to move in here?
The children play faraway, the corridors are bare
This room is a cage, it’s like captivity
How can anyone exist in such misery?
It has been said, “Not only here”

Allianza dollars are spent to raise the towering buildings for the weary bones of the workers to go back in the morning
It has been said, “Not only here”

Allianza dollars are spent to raise the towering buildings for the weary bones of the workers to be strong in the morning
So, go pack your things
Watching the building

‘Til they stop building

Here is what a 2002 study on man-made mineral fibres found:

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has reviewed the carcinogenicity of man-made mineral fibres in October 2002. The IARC Monograph’s working group concluded only the more biopersistent materials remain classified by IARC as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B). These include refractory ceramic fibres, which are used industrially as insulation in high-temperature environments such as blast furnaces, and certain special-purpose glass wools not used as insulating materials.

Off-topic, Small town government life:

I just got an E-mail from the state on ageing water mains. They noted that the Village of Morrill (to our west in Scott’s Bluff County) just replaced a 100-yo section of water main in the village that had massive holes in it.

The state was concerned about our water mains as well and suggested I look into our water main system and report back … our village replaced the miles of water main back in 2011 with modern plastic mains, so we’re good.

Morrill is scheduled to replace its village’s entire water main system this summer at a cost of many dollars.

We’ll be working on getting our water tower fixed this summer so we have plenty to do as well. Too bad the iron company can’t get here before fly season and bird nest building season starts. Those are the two principal reasons that sometimes we have to chlorinate our water - most of the time we just pump it out of the ground and straight to homes.

Rockwool and glass fiber wool aren’t that harmful provided you use them properly and in a way which contains the fibers if there is a hole in the wall etc. Post-construction cleaning is also key.

“Our color vision is very strange,” says James Higham, an assistant professor in NYU’s Department of Anthropology and one of the study’s co-authors. “Our green receptor and our red receptor detect very similar colors. One would think that the ideal type of color vision would look different from ours, and when we design color detection, such as for digital cameras, we construct a different type of color vision. However, we’ve now shown that when it comes to spotting changes in color linked to social cues, humans outshine the type of color vision we’ve designed for our technologies.”

Rockwool and glass fiber wool aren’t that harmful provided you use them properly and in a way which contains the fibers if there is a hole in the wall etc. Post-construction cleaning is also key.

As to plaster, NOPE!, I would go with 2 layers of drywall, one of the fire rated variety. On each side of the rockwool.

Drywall here is extremely uncommon. The vast majority of residential apartment buildings here are either masonry or interlocking concrete panels. Family homes are usually masonry.

I think the gist of the article is that our technology (digital cameras) does not see the world as we do. (.To which I can attest —in my forays into digital photography and photoshop, I have big problems making skin look right to me.) Animals other than Humans and Primates seem not to have this variation (as I guess not all animals have trichromic color vision).

I does help to explain how we got to the top of the food chain.

The ideal system would capture color/light as it is, objectively. We perceive color/light as it is necessary to our survival —subjectively.

Red is red because we all agree that it is red —not because it is on a certain part of the light wave.

I used to sell cosmetics. There are all kinds of colors of mascara —black, off black, blackest black etc. One customer asked me, “Isn’t black was black?”

I started thinking of light waves travelling thru space and decided I had no way to answer her question.

Because he is looking at it ass backwards. Social cues are not going to push enough force on evolution to cause change over much more base issues, such as reproduction. And, our sight evolved long before our social cues became relevant. Our sight has adapted to what we need to survive, not to what our psychology dictates.

The comment I left on that page:

The SBC was founded, entirely and explicitly, to support white supremacy.

Until the 1830’s there was one Baptist Church. Many of the northern congregations were abolitionist, who pushed for the entire denomination to make their missionaries disavow slavery. That’s why there was a schism, that’s how the Southern Baptist denomination came into being.

That’s also where they came up with the idea of literal reading of scripture, and the whole concept of biblical inerrancy — because there’s some verses about how slaves are supposed to be obedient and should never rebel, and some about how people of different tribes/races shouldn’t mix.

(for more information… Slacktivist writes about this fairly often.)

ETA: in 1995, the SBC finally issued a resolution that they realized the Bible did not in fact require segregation or forbid interracial marriage. “whoops, we’ve been reading it wrong. So sorry, our bad.”

No. Part of gun worship religion. The one with the element of surprise always gets the first shot. If the shooter is good, it will also be the last shot.

Concealed carry for self-protection (other than limited situations such as a guard), or even open carry, is a myth.

All those guys wandering around with tacticool rifles slung across their backs could be bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat before they could get them around to where they could use them. (There is a reason why infantry units patrol holding their guns, not porting them around on their backs.)

Pistols have been known to get stuck in holsters, or fall out and fire from the floor.

That goes back to making the NRA’s safety rules law: There are no accidents, just negligence. Your gun goes off because you dropped it or shot yourself in the foot, you go to jail.

Exactly. The other one that makes me cringe is the open carry justifiers. At least get a CCW permit and keep that thing hidden. If I was a bad guy with a gun I’d case out a joint looking for potential threats first and neutralize them. If you”re packing visibly and sitting at a lunch counter, you’re not going to be able to defend against someone coming up behind you and getting the first shot. No matter what, the bad guy with a gun is always going to get a free first shot if they have the element of surprise on their side.

In fact, if you take a CCW training course (as I have) they tell you over and over again NOT to open carry. It’s stupid.

My state has open carry, primarily because it’s almost entirely rural. That said, we don’t have wingnuts wandering around open carrying just for the hell of it. (You might occasionally see someone in town walking with a rifle toward the river or the Sandhills for hunting, but that’s it.)

I took my shotgun a few months ago to the gun shop (around the corner from me) to have the gunsmith inspect it for safety and mechanical soundness: He reminded me to bring it to him in a case.

Not that I recall, far from as hideous as asbestos. But you should wear a mouth mask, and whatever you do, take a cold shower to get the fibers off.

Rockwool is probably a lot of different things. The variety I’m familiar with was a fiber made from molten steel mill stony slag, produced by blowing air through it. It had some of the mechanical properties of some kinds of asbestos. Asbestosis arises from mechanical action more than chemical. At least it was so explained back in the day.

Aside: I’m on lithotripsy reprieve today—the machine is booked.
