Editorial pages of the Big Important Papers all filled with flimsy thumbsuckers about how Liberals need to take responsibility for Scalise being shot.

Thanks, but no thanks. Return to sender.

Closest is the piece in the NYT about how the overheated rhetoric is an outgroth of the hidden profit imperatives of an all-pervasive media machine that feeds upon manufactured outrage, helpfully titled, “I’m OK - You’re Pure Evil.”

Money graf from Frank Bruni’s take:

Lately, Trump and his children have been playing the victims of all this, but save your tears. He has been an enormous part of the problem, from before his candidacy to the present. If anyone sets and bears responsibility for our country’s tone, it’s our president, and let’s please not forget that he got all those plaudits last week for his dignified, sensitive response to the Alexandria shooting because we’re never sure we can count on him to clear even the lowest of bars.

He doesn’t so much lead the country as addle it, unhinging everyone in his orbit and anyone pressed to keep tabs on him. Anderson Cooper, flustered by Jeffrey Lord’s blind worship of Trump, describes a vulgar scenario to ridicule it. Politicians litter their remarks with four-letter words.

Meanwhile, Ross Douthat wrings his hands and assigns blame to the forces that are trying to pull the country towards the center because Reasons, and anyway, the liberals in the media should shaddup already about right-wing murdercases because it’s mean and hurts his feelings:

“The second thing to say is that a murderous attack on Republicans by an angry liberal should be an important reminder for our media-cultural establishment that societies can be pulled apart from the left as easily as from the right. Of course, network anchors and magazine editors and editorial boards know this on an intellectual level. But because our centrist elites are actually center-left there is a constant, involuntary tug toward emphasizing what’s wrong on the right-wing side of the spectrum and excusing what’s wrong on the other.”

Notice how after awhile the rate of rotation matches the video frame rate, so the camera is doing one or more full integer spins between every frame capture and the image lines up near perfectly again.

It’s pretty damned clear that Rosenstein isn’t going to fire Mueller, and Trump’s public anger towards him can only play out as a continued and far more flagrant attempt to obstruct justice.

The last question Kelly asked Putin, which was not aired, was startling in its pandering. “We have been here in St. Petersburg for about a week now. And virtually every person we have met on the street says what they respect about you is they feel that you have returned dignity to Russia, that you’ve returned Russia to a place of respect. You’ve been in the leadership of this country for 17 years now. Has it taken any sort of personal toll on you?”

A former CIA Russia analyst who spoke to HuffPost was taken aback by the last question Kelly asked. “I can’t begin to tell you what this did for Putin’s ego, and I wouldn’t put it past the Kremlin to use it for propaganda purposes. Putin’s obsession is, by his definition, making Russia great again. He’s obsessed with the idea that he has returned the country to what he sees as the glory days of the USSR. He feels that since the breakup of the USSR, Russia has too often ceded ground where it shouldn’t have. And he’s obsessed with people seeing him as the one who brought dignity back to Russia.”

Proud Boys is a far-right men’s organization[1][2][3] founded in 2016 by commentator Gavin McInnes. McInnes describes the organization as a “pro-Western fraternal organization” for men who “refuse to apologize for creating the modern world.”[4] The group has been referred to as Alt-Right,[5] but McInnes describes the alt-right as “too far” because they think “Whites are what [are] important, not necessarily Western values”, and instead identifies as “Alt-Light”. He claims to be inclusive to anyone “as long as you accept the western world as the best.”[6] The Proud Boys also subscribe to “no wanks”, which is a rule banning masturbation.[7]

Why do I think Hoft’s tweet ended “..emerged victorious … in her own back yard” (I won’t click on any link to Dim Jim: Internet Cooties might be a real thing)?

This is an unusual result in French politics, though: nobody (except and since De Gaulle) gets a Parliamentary majority: even more so since Macron’s victorious Party was only cobbled up last year. One can only hope Macron will be able to do more with his Presidency and Majority than the last few French Presidents who haven’t been able to do much, and end up with approval ratings that make Donald Trump’s look like FDR’s - but we shall see.

Has she spotted a “bulls-eye” circle yet? That is supposed to be the sign of Lyme Disease.

She has not, but although that is the classically known sign, it doesn’t happen in all cases. Even if you go with the best estimate (that 80% of cases do see the rash), that still means one out of every 5 folks who contracts the disease doesn’t have the rash.

But no other symptoms so far, so so far so good. (I really just wanted to see how many times I could work the word so into a phrase. Okay, not really, but it’s kind of cool.)

Also: not all deer ticks (even in high-risk areas) carry the Lyme virus : it’s best to get tested, just in case, though.

I’ve had two Lyme scares in my life: once in 1989 after a visit to Block Island (aka Plague Central) -tick bite complete with bullseye rash, but no disease, thankfully. The other time was c. 2005, when, after a trip to the Berkshires, I found a nice fat tick attached in a rather awkward place, and freaked out. However, after taking it to doctor (right away!) it too tested negative. Best not to take chances, Lyme is a pretty gnarly ailment…

I read the article about the Southern Baptists passing the resolution condemning white slavery, and I talked about it. Like the guy who wrote the article, I think the curse of Ham should have been mentioned so that people couldn’t forget that the Southern Baptists were a part of the problem. Which lead my mom to immediately go into her problem with the removal of the Confederate statues.

I mentioned that the reason they need to be removed from public places, and put into museums, is that they honor those who were traitors. As I think about it now, I should have pointed out that it makes them look like good guys. If we’re going to leave statues to these people up, they need to show what they did. They need to show Lee arresting black union soldiers and sending them into slavery. Put Nathan Bedford Forrest in a KKK outfit.

Didn’t the May family found Clear Channel communications, or was that a different wingnut family?

And I have to say, this phrasing that the van “collided with” pedestrians is really sort of odd. There’s an implication there that the people who got run down in the street by a goddamn van are somehow partially responsible for it.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in NYC metro area. It’s a steamy and hot day here, with expected strong/severe storms coming through during the day. But that’s nothing compared to the ongoing shitstorm in Trumpworld.

Trump seems to think his job is to tout the Trump brand, and let the world know his lawyer is on Fox News this morning, instead of working on nominating an ambassador to Japan or a Secretary of Navy (kinda important given that the USS Fitzgerald suffered major damage in a collision with a freighter over the weekend, resulting in the loss of life of 7 sailors).

Trump later deleted that tweet, which itself is a violation of NARA rules.

Trump is his own worst enemy and he doubles down when things go wrong, or projects, or tells other lies. It’s how he has always operated, and there’s no reason anyone should expect him to change. He didn’t during the campaign. He didn’t during the transition, and he’s now been in office since January and hasn’t changed one iota.

There’s no benefit of doubt. The guy is a raving nutjob who doesn’t understand what it means to be president, but instead thinks he can look at Fox and Friends, recite Alex Jones conspiracies, and that makes him presidential.

Oh, and he’ll continue taking credit for the economy that was bestowed to him by Obama (after spending years attacking Obama for the same kind of economic growth and unemployment figures). Trump hasn’t gotten his own budget enacted, and the economy operates largely beyond a president’s control, but that doesn’t stop him from taking credit for the work of others (again, his usual MO). His EOs haven’t changed the economy since most of them relate to promises to do stuff down the road.

One area where he’s trying to tout success is on bringing back coal jobs. John Oliver skewers him on that too:

Trump’s Coal Plan: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) | Jun 18, 2017

Coal industry has about 50,000 jobs, which is less than half of the number employed by JC Penney (which itself is on the verge of collapse). Sears is likewise circling the drain, and they’ve got 178,000 jobs at stake.

Alt energy jobs are several times that figure, but Trump thinks he’s going to bring back a dying industry (one that has been on the decline for decades as automation/technology have meant fewer people can mine more coal at less cost than ever). But natural gas is the real killer for coal, and that’s not changing. Alt energy is likewise reaching a tipping point on energy production/costs. Regulations are a small reason why coal is dying out, and with it the jobs. Obama isn’t to blame for that no matter how much Trump wants to brand it that way.

Power Causes Brain Damage
Over time, leaders lose mental capacities—most notably for reading other people—that were essential to their rise

The historian Henry Adams was being metaphorical, not medical, when he described power as “a sort of tumor that ends by killing the victim’s sympathies.” But that’s not far from where Dacher Keltner, a psychology professor at UC Berkeley, ended up after years of lab and field experiments. Subjects under the influence of power, he found in studies spanning two decades, acted as if they had suffered a traumatic brain injury—becoming more impulsive, less risk-aware, and, crucially, less adept at seeing things from other people’s point of view.

Oh, kudos to goddamnedfrank above for laying out how insane Louise Mensch is and that she is fighting a losing battle with reality (and Preet Bharara).

Preet knows a thing or two about how the criminal justice system works in the US. Louise doesn’t. She thinks there’s secret indictments just waiting to be dropped. That’s not how it works, and Preet takes her behind the woodshed.

All the while, she stands by her “reporting” despite the fact that she has spun claims that can’t be verified. If they never come to pass, she can claim the indictments were suppressed. But if an indictment is handed down through the ordinary means, she will claim vindication.

This is how conspiracies work.

There’s a lot of people who substitute wishful thinking for how things work in the world.

There’s nothing quick or easy about indictment processes, especially as they relate to the kinds of issues facing the Trump administration and individual members of Trump’s inner circle.

It takes time to build cases, and we’re still in the part of the process where everyone is lawyering up (and it is hilarious to watch Trump suffer from having counsel that is inexperienced as compared to his underlings who have found high-powered/high profile lawyers who deal with these kinds of issues regularly). Everyone is still in the information gathering phase, and indictments could occur after that wraps up.

A lot of people would love that the process goes quicker than it is (and I am among those who would love to see Trump gone sooner, rather than later), but I also know that the process is time consuming and those who are gathering the information want to have all the evidence before they move forward with their recommendations.

That’s why I’d take Preet’s word over Mensch’s - especially considering that Mensch doesn’t have a clue about how the US legal system works, and she’s made that clear on a number of occasions already.

Holy crap, knock me over with a feather: I got a callback from one of my senator’s staffers in Washington over my recent E-mail.

The E-mail concerned Eric Trump’s recent genocidal statements against Democrats on FOX News Channel; I called on Deb Fischer (R-Nebr.) to condemn such statements.

He was mistaken in thinking I wrote about Donald Trump; I corrected him to note it was in fact Eric that made those statements, not his father.

He said he would pass my concerns along to Sen. Fischer. (I’m not expecting a lot here, but the fact I got an acknowledgement from Deb Fischer’s office is quite an advancement on any other issue I ever wrote about, other than saving our Post Office.)

Hallelujah. My GOP Senator has acknowledged my existence. (Perhaps she’s concerned I might have a following out here in the Nebraska Desert.)

theatlantic.com

If there’s any single binding policy narrative for the first five months of Donald Trump’s presidency, it’s that the president is against regulations that kill jobs. In his June 1 Rose Garden speech announcing the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, Trump bemoaned it as a policy that “could cost Americans as much as 2.7 million lost jobs by 2025.” He’s touted his success in making deals to keep factory jobs in the country, and has claimed that his work “includ[es] a record number of resolutions to eliminate job-killing regulations.”

So how would Trump and his job-creating party feel about a law that costs a million jobs over the next decade and decreases total business activity by hundreds of billions over the same time period? They have a chance to decide just that as the Senate deliberates a reconfigured American Health Care Act, the Republican plan to replace Obamacare.

What the New CBO Score Reveals About the AHCA

A new report from the Commonwealth Fund and George Washington University researchers Leighton Ku, Erika Steinmetz, Erin Brantley, Nikhil Holla, and Brian K. Bruen finds that the AHCA would slash total jobs by about a million, total state gross domestic products by $93 billion, and total business output by $148 billion by 2026. Most of those jobs would be shed from the health-care industry, which would contract severely over that frame. Most of the losses in economic activity would come in states that have expanded Medicaid to low-income adults under the Affordable Care Act….

Donald Trump has yet to comment on either the terrorist attacks in Iran, nor the death of seven seamen in the collision involving the USS Fitzgerald.

Just about any other president in my lifetime would have addressed either issue by now.

I guess President Trump is too worried about his poll numbers and golf handicap to be concerned about dead American seamen (that goes for the rest of the GOP as well, since I’ve heard no commentary from any of them).

My home flag was out yesterday (Federal holiday), and is out today in acknowledgement of what conservatives have overlooked (the death of American seamen).

On that GOP database theft, it would seem that those most likely to fall victim to wire fraud or Internet crime are those persons who do not have access to the Internet, or are unaware of annualcreditreport.com (where you can get a free credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies - it has been recommended in the past you get a report every four months from one agency so you can follow along your credit).

As such, I have already contacted other members of my village board and the library director (since she lives with me) to ensure folk in the village who do not have access to the Internet are aware of the problem so they can take action on damage control.

Sick of this crap, and with parties and BBQs coming up I KNOW I’m gonna hear that shit. This is why we’re divided and I have a very tough time forgiving that shit because it is extremely un-American. Done. With. It.

All my adult life I have put up with “liberals are un-American.” Even when I was in the US Navy I had to hear that crap. (Same with atheists, and the alleged statement by George HW Bush to reporter Robert Sherman: “No, I don’t know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.”)

On the last, American Atheists sent a letter to GHW Bush asking for a clarification, and he never responded.

He said that while I was on an aircraft carrier in the Med. I figure my patriotism as a liberal and an atheist was much more apparent with me on active duty than any wingnut toting a rifle at a protest alleging the government was going to round up their guns, but that’s just me.

Mueller is putting together the Murderer’s Row of legal teams - complete with one member whose specialty is flipping witnesses….

A veteran federal prosecutor recruited onto special counsel Robert Mueller’s team is known for a skill that may come in handy in the investigation of potential ties between Russia and U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign team: persuading witnesses to turn on friends, colleagues and superiors.

Andrew Weissmann, who headed the U.S. Justice Department’s criminal fraud section before joining Mueller’s team last month, is best known for two assignments - the investigation of now-defunct energy company Enron and organized crime cases in Brooklyn, New York - that depended heavily on gaining witness cooperation.

Securing the cooperation of people close to Trump, many of whom have been retaining their own lawyers, could be important for Mueller, who was named by the Justice Department as special counsel on May 17 and is investigating, among other issues, whether Trump himself has sought to obstruct justice. Trump has denied allegations of both collusion and obstruction.

The Panamanian government just spent billions to engage in a massive expansion of the Canal, allowing (post) new-panamax ships to use the canal.

US seaports have been spending billions upgrading their facilities to handle the new ships. Here in NYC metro, we’ve seen the Bayonne Bridge get raised to accommodate the new ships, plus additional harbor dredging and new cranes installed at the ports. Similar stories at other major ports on the East Coast.

He doesn’t know/care about any of that. It’d be a good segue into infrastructure, but he doesn’t grasp any of this (or care). Guess that we’re past the infrastructure week where it was nonstop Trump-Russia…

To add to it…I notice pundit people doing the balance fairy thing about bad people saying mean things on both sides.

Not one person is saying anything about what is really dividing us. That would be a political party hell-bent on killing off all of the hard stuff this country had to go through to make it great…like social programs, banking regulations, education, parks, unions, a decent living wage, etc. on and on versus a party that wants to save it and add to it.

I am sick of seeing highly paid talking fucking heads going on about the tone of the rhetoric, the divisions blah blah and not touching on what is causing it. I guess they do not want us fighting for good and fighting for our very lives.

I don’t claim to have the sophistication to know everything there is to know about Shakespeare. I have never seen one of his plays nor read one.

That said, my understanding of “Julius Caesar” as it has been performed is that the character of Caesar has usually been portrayed in the terms of contemporary political situations.

I would appreciate a one-comment education on this if I have that wrong.

It depends; some companies stick to straight-up, old-school Shakespeare whereas others will put a contemporary spin on it. Great example of the latter: Ian McKellan’s Richard III.

Not necessarily. It’s up to the director to choose whether to perform the play wearing togas, in contemporary setting, or arbitrarily choose some other random historical period.

Orson Welles staged a production of “Julius Caesar” in the 1930’s featuring fascist uniforms.

I once saw a production of “Hamlet” set in post-Revolutionary France. That period would also work well for “Julius Caesar”.

Yes, it certainly was; leave it to Kurosawa to make two of the finest adaptations of The Bard to ever grace the silver screen.

I went to the general store this morning to stock up on my vices (cigarettes, booze, and lotto tickets).

The place was packed this morning. Much of the discussion was “WTF did I vote for?”

It seems despite the best efforts of conservative media here, news of the real world is starting to penetrate.

Of note, no one in the store gave me crap for voting for Mrs. Clinton. That is new. It would appear our regional newspaper is losing its support for Mr. Trump. (They still didn’t print my letter about Eric Trump using genocidal language against Democrats, but locally, it would appear my local electorate is becoming disillusioned about their expectations.)

Good. You are in real world test market.

I’m hoping what you saw and heard this morning is going on all over America. Just wait until the healthcare legislation comes out. Then there will be real upset GOP backers.

Politics is still all about getting and staying elected. We are slowly getting to the point where the GOP politicians are going to see more benefit in distancing themselves from Trump than keeping him near them. It will then only take a few more bad developments for them to decide he needs to be pushed out the door.

Geez. The gunfire down by the river (hunting) sounds like a re-creation of the Battle of the Bulge. How many bloody hunters are down there? I haven’t heard as much gunfire as the last time I was at the skeet and trap range.

You’re considering making a noise complaint, but willing to settle out of court. Two geese or 4 ducks would be a fair offer….

The Other Great Eclipse: Author Recounts 1878 Solar Eclipse (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, whose crossword puzzle contest I expect to win Wednesday):

On Monday, July 29, 1878, a solar eclipse passed through the western United States.
The other great eclipse: Author recounts 1878 solar eclipse

These images provided by the U.S. Postal Service shows The Total Solar Eclipse Forever stamp. The Postal Service will soon release a first-of-its-kind stamp that changes when you touch it, which commemorates the Aug. 21 eclipse, transforming into an image of the Moon from the heat of a finger.
U.S. Postal Service via AP

“America’s First Great Eclipse: How Scientists, Tourists, and the Rocky Mountain Eclipse of 1878 Changed Astronomy Forever” written by author Steve Ruskin tells the story of how professional astronomers traveled mostly to Colorado and Wyoming to view and document a solar eclipse. Few scientists went to Texas as a new concept was emerging that the best way to see, not only solar eclipses, but other astronomical phenomenon was at higher elevations.

“The 1878 solar eclipse was the first to be a truly national event,” Ruskin wrote. “It was the first time so many scientists visited the frontier at one time and at higher elevations.”

As I wrote, “usually.”

That would be an interesting production. (I’m guessing I will never see a Shakespeare play, considering where I live.)

If you’d rather “entertaining” than “interesting”, the comedies are way better than the tragedies or histories. I’m particularly partial to Midsummer Night’s Dream; Taming of the Shrew can be either super-sexist or super-feminist, depending on the specific production.

Throne of Blood is Macbeth and despite the changes, it is often considered one of the all-time best film adaptations of Shakespeare.

“Throne of Blood” is a glorious movie, and everyone should see it. It’s a Kurosawa film, black and white, with Toshiro Mifune his own damn self in the lead role. Takes a few liberties — drops one of the main characters, with extensive changes to the end — but it’s wonderful fun.

There have been a lot of cool modernizations of Shakespeare. First time I saw “Ten Things I Hate About You,” I was really surprised how great it was…

Thanks. I crashed on Saturday. Well, more like ‘fell over in the street’. I was glad for my new helmet (it hit the ground, but had not a scratch on it) and my new mirror (didn’t even need to be adjusted after). West Side Story is a direct take of Romeo and Juliet.
Baz Luhrmann did a modern spin on Romeo and Juliet with dance/music and Leo DeCaprio in the lead role.
Gnomeo and Juliet was a cartoon spin on same. Red and blue gnomes rivals living on the other side of the fence fought each other and two crazy kids found true love despite it.

There’s a current TV show “Still Star-Crossed”, a Shonda Rhimes production (available on Hulu)… that’s a Romeo & Juliet sequel. Rosalin and Benvolio are super-pissed their parents want them to marry to end the feud and unify Verona (Venice and Florence are threatening, it’s important)…

In high school some friends and I did the last act of Hamlet for a variety show. It was completely modernized into 70s era high schoolers in bell bottoms and t-shirts in a student council meeting. All died very well. It went over well.

“Sons of Anarchy” was Hamlet.

The tropical wave that pushed off Africa is now threatening Venezuela. Tropical Storm Warnings are up for portions of the eastern Venezuela coastline as the National Hurricane Center expects the storm to become a tropical storm. It is designated Tropical Depression Two at this time.

Tropical Depression One is over the Yucatan Peninsula at the moment. The National Weather Service gives this storm a ninety percent chance of becoming a tropical storm as it emerges in the next few hours into the Gulf of Mexico. Its future path could threaten either the Mexican or Texan coastlines.

My brother-in-law (who lives on the Texas coast) thanked me for alerting him to TD1. He is now taking precautions and monitoring the weather. I don’t know why someone in Nebraska has to alert him to potential tropical weather in Texas … lazy?

There have been attempts to stage productions that supposedly repudiate the anti-Semitism and the racism that permeate the originals but that’s hard to do while still keeping the original script.

The idea that rights achieved by women through suffering and work seems lost on some women today. They do not realise the work, effort, discrimination, and protest women in the past had to go through to obtain recognition of women’s rights that exist today (and how easily they could be lost).

Certainly not all women (or men) are so complacent (as the Women’s March demonstrated - we even had a march of two people here in my village - guess which two).

Those rights will not be maintained unless future generations of women and men are educated and those rights are asserted.

I’m an elected Democratic official (albeit very minor post). I’m guessing the chance I would suddenly jump to support Sen. Fischer approaches zero. Moreover, her staff has studiously ignored me the entire time I’ve lived here.

If the state GOP is up to speed, they should be able to find the Democratic candidates I’ve supported with my dollars to run against GOP candidates (including most recently Dave Domina against Ben Sasse).
