They aren’t just repealing Obamacare. That’s a small portion of the plan. The plan attacks and guts Medicare and Medicaid. Safety net programs that have worked and provide care to millions of people and are able to achieve an economy of scale that private based insurance is unable or unwilling to do (and are able to negotiate lower reimbursement rates). They’re going after the Great Society and ultimately the New Deal.

And why?

Tax cuts so millionaires like Trump get even more wealth.

At the same time, the burdens multiply on the rest of the nation, making the schism between haves and have nots even worse.

The GOP plans don’t expand coverage to more people or make it more affordable for more people. It sucks the very life out of people and puts millions more at risk.

The GOP is also banking on a media that will magical balance fairy the shit out of this, obfuscating the reality that Obamacare is far better than anything the GOP had 8 years to concoct, or that the reason the GOP plan is so awful is that Democrats refused to work with the GOP, when the GOP actively worked to suppress all info about the GOP plan, hid it from public scrutiny and CBO/JCT scoring because both would reveal it to be a shit show of epic proportions.

Even then, the GOP thinks that this is a winning issue for them because they get to claim Obamacare is repealed - 8 years of incessant lies keeps this going. Their supporters think Obamacare is awful, when it’s anything but.

Charles should have included misogyny among Trump’s defects. I do know someone whose vote was anti-Hillary. I think, though, that she’s a racist so didn’t care about that aspect of his character, but she definitely is not a Trump or Melania fan.

I can’t list all of his defects in every tweet, unfortunately! But yeah, misogyny is also definitely a big part of his appeal to the right wing base.

I’ve put it off, but finally I saw the Philando Castile dashcam video, and it’s worse than I imagined.

The poor man was doing everything right, but a cop pulled him over because he had an excuse, and then he panicked when Castile told him he had a license to carry and was armed. And the cop got off. The cop, the jury, the system - all guilty.

Maybe we as a country deserve what we’re going through, and the damage to our international standing that Trump will cause, if we do this to our own law-abiding citizens because of their color. Who are we to try and lead anyone? Where would we get any kind of moral authority?

I think that’s an extremely striking graph, myself. Social conservatives - i.e. religious wingnuts - will vote for a Republican every time. Economic liberals will vote for a Democrat every time. She went on to basically say we cannot expect to win them over. What we have to do is Get. More. Dems. To. Vote. Get ‘em registered, get ‘em to the polls. Because Republicans ALWAYS vote, and they always vote for the Republican. If we don’t start doing that, we’ll keep ending up behind the 8 ball.

I’m not sure there’s a way to win over anyone who saw Donald Trump speak, and still voted for him. I’m serious.

And, honestly, I’m not sure how much I buy the ‘politically unsophisticated’ argument. For cripes sakes - it’s not rocket surgery. The man said a Latino judge couldn’t be fair to him because of his ancestry. He bragged, on tape, about sexually assaulting women. He slandered an entire religion.

There’s no way they didn’t know these things. But they were okay with it.

My brother told me about a series of ‘racial reconciliation’ discussions that his church did, when they were living in Raleigh NC. It was a reasonably liberal church, with a pretty mixed race crowd.

One night, he felt brave enough to admit that one of his coworkers was really racist, used a lot of racist language, said a lot of racist things. My brother admitted he tended to let those things slide unchallenged, but he felt bad about it.

One of the black women in the group told him bluntly that she didn’t know if she could trust him anymore, after hearing that - that, sure, he talked a good game in the church, but when it mattered he’d let that shit go unchallenged.

He realized what he’d been looking for was to be told that it was okay that he’d done that. He wanted absolution from the black people for not having had their backs. And he realized they were right not to give it to him.

I can’t absolve Trump voters. He wasn’t sneaky at all. All of his base character was on display. The idea that somehow Clinton could be worse is ludicrous.

It’s not only immigrants who believed this — there are educated people who bought into rw propaganda and share those beliefs, including the idea that what this country needs is a “successful” CEO.. And as said, there were average people whose life went into a tailspin as a result of the banking crisis; they were willing to try anything. People are gullible — they are willing to seize on any small glimmer of hope, why else would those who cannot afford it buy so many lottery tickets? Unfortunately those who gambled the rent and lost also lost it for the rest of us. Unfortunately they are still loyal to the “Orange Messiah”.

So I step onto the subway station today and the LA Sheriffs are gone, now we have LAPD in blue lookin out. Four of them just looking out and letting folks pass, who are puzzled as they expect the cops to have a TAP card reader. Fare check thing. They don’t have them yet.

One of them has 25 year stripes and I introduce myself and express thanks for their work. So I straight out pitch these guys to spend a lot of time on trains riding ‘cause between stations we are vulnerable. Pulling the emergency stop is going to extend first responder time. So riders don’t know to wait in a crisis. These guys are nodding their heads they get it.

That 25 year guy? A captain who will be in deployment meetings. Call me Lucky RWC.

This part is actually true. The *potential* Dem voters who can’t be arsed to show up (voter-suppression victims excluded) genuinely don’t know or understand what the Democratic party has to offer them. Screw nuance and bring out the bold and dare I say simplistic claims as long as they’re tethered to reality. US voters reward “go big or go home” and punish anything perceived as subtlety or incrementalism.

As for Nancy Pelosi…have Democrats ever tried the classic GOP technique of doubling down instead of hem/haw timid-ass defensive plays? Since the haters are gonna hate anyway, what have Dems got to lose by saying something like, “You’re damn right we support Pelosi because even conservatives call her one of the most consequential speakers in history. She gets shit done, motherfucker. Shit that helps you and your family.”

Honestly, even people who don’t agree with you tend to respect you a hell of a lot more when you stand up for your beliefs.
