Trump Lashes Out at His Own White House Counsel

He’s losing it more and more

Our thin-skinned narcissistic so-called president is now lashing out at his own loyal supporters, including White House counsel Don McGahn.

Trump started the week by giving McGahn, a loyal supporter who was among the first Washington establishment figures to sign on with his presidential campaign, a dressing down in the Oval Office for not doing more to quash the Russia probe early on.

The episode — recounted by four people familiar with the conversation — came as part of a broader discussion on Monday about the president’s frustrations with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, which now includes the question of whether Trump himself tried to obstruct the investigation by firing FBI Director James Comey.

And to make himself feel better, the yammering yam got on Twitter again early this morning with an absurd boast that reveals his near-total ignorance of what governing really means.

I’ve helped pass and signed 38 Legislative Bills, mostly with no Democratic support, and gotten rid of massive amounts of regulations. Nice!

Friday’s are good for music videos around here. I found this the other day and I was completely taken back to seeing them around the very same time on their first tour of America.

I think I mentioned before how a lot of Brit bands would start an American tour in Ohio with the three Agora Ballrooms on the schedule. It gave them three decent venues only 200 miles or so apart from each other in Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo. They could get in a groove without a lot of travel and in front of usually appreciative audiences.

When my buddies and I saw them, the crowd was small because a lot of people weren’t familiar with the band. That allowed us to plop right down in front and take in the total enchantment that was Genesis with Peter Gabriel.

You don’t have to like rock to like Genesis as they were quite classical, but if you listen closely they had some rockin’ power too.

But what really made them was the small one song plays Gabriel would perform in costumes with vocal inflections, mime and classic story telling. He was and still is one of the most unique entertainers ever.

It’s a full hour long and it captures the band and Gabriel perfectly. Watch Gabriel closely for all his little actions that made his “characters” so much fun.

Executive Orders are not legislation. They are generated and carried out by the Executive Branch with no action from Congress.

He’s even botched those signing ceremonies by wandering off before signing the things he is taking credit for on occasion.

He’s signed a handful of bills into law, but the majority of legislation that’s passed Congress so far has been the naming the post office kind of mundane stuff that is done on voice vote (bipartisan).

His nonsensical blather about regulations is all over the place too. He called for eliminating regulations, but that’s more of a promise to perform, not any actual measurable elimination of regs. He did eliminate water protections so coal mines can dump waste into waterways, so there’s that.

But calling on an agency like the IRS to suspend all regulations actually does more harm than good since there’s a process for promulgating regulations and this is guidance that taxpayers rely upon for preparing their taxes. There’s feedback from interested parties, and the agency is fulfilling its Congressional obligations to administer the tax law that they enacted. Regulations fill in gaps (on purpose as we repeatedly see with the IRC) where Congress left administrative features up to the relevant agencies.

Nonsense about how you want to eliminate 2 regs for every new reg doesn’t even make sense since that’s not how any of this works.

I think one of the things we, as private citizens, have failed to do in large numbers is interact with institutions like the police except as adversaries. I don’t think he thought Comey would exaggerate his testimony only because I don’t think Trump’s thought process ever got all that much further than “if I bluff about tapes that means I’ve seized the assumption of truthfulness in the public’s eye.” He’s apparently done this thing before with others, simply asserting tapes exist as a way of trying to get journalists to retract or alter inconvenient quotes. Trump was afraid of Comey saying exactly what Comey said, remember the bluff came before (and precipitated the leak of) news about Comey’s memos. Trump was just hoping it would be his word against Comey’s and that the tape bluff might cause Comey to doubt his own recollections.

I think IOKIYAR has been exacerbated by Trump. Yesterday, Cornyn said of the whole secret writing of the Senate bill, to be voted on a week after the reveal, “I can’t imagine a more transparent process.”

This is PLAINLY a bald faced lie, the kind that a couple years ago, he might have been too cautious to try. But Trump proved that Republicans literally DO NOT CARE about honesty, or truth, or reality. And as a result, you see Republicans saying their process was no more secretive than the ACA process, because at the time the ACA was being developed, they CLAIMED it was all a secret process they had no input on.

This is dangerous, because people who have no scruples or shame (I’m looking at YOU, Mitch McConnell) are finding that there’s no price to be paid for any transgression. They can literally do whatever they want and get away with it. And for a party that has lacked real principles for a long time, this is a very dangerous development. They basically become the kid in the candy store.

I think IOKIYAR has been exacerbated by Trump. Yesterday, Cornyn said of the whole secret writing of the Senate bill, to be voted on a week after the reveal, “I can’t imagine a more transparent process.”

This is PLAINLY a bald faced lie, the kind that a couple years ago, he might have been too cautious to try. But Trump proved that Republicans literally DO NOT CARE about honesty, or truth, or reality. And as a result, you see Republicans saying their process was no more secretive than the ACA process, because at the time the ACA was being developed, they CLAIMED it was all a secret process they had no input on.

This is dangerous, because people who have no scruples or shame (I’m looking at YOU, Mitch McConnell) are finding that there’s no price to be paid for any transgression. They can literally do whatever they want and get away with it. And for a party that has lacked real principles for a long time, this is a very dangerous development. They basically become the kid in the candy store.

The GOP has been experimenting with greater and greater levels of cynicism for awhile: what can they get away with, how much justification and misdirection are required?

At the same time, there’s been a cultural drive to eliminate skepticism and present partisan politics as an existential, even spiritual conflict, in which right and wrong is about affiliation. The base has become more and more tolerant, since the only value system they really have is “on side, it’s probably okay” versus “not like us, always guilty.”

At this point, procedural kabuki isn’t necessary. You can lie or not answer, and expect that while you might not be believed by everyone, there’s a considerable number of people that will believe you’re still better than the liberals.

I believe that the actual number of early deaths among the 23 million who will be deprived of coverage will be much higher — but probably not in that specific year. For example, those who develop cancer will not receive treatment. I would not be surprised if 5% of those 23 million will perish prematurely.

It’s not just plutocrats.

Lots of people have empathy deficits because of a combination of lack of imagination and a base assumption that their problems and their feelings are paramount, no matter how trivial, and that their “normal” is deserved, not the product of circumstance and luck. In turn, there are various social forces that reinforce and even reward this belief.

Wealth leads to an especially gross version, though, since you’re isolated from people that are different, and generally around folks (employees, staff) that can’t differ.

But I see this behavior in people that have been raised up to wealth, because it’s really about that base assumption that I matter, you don’t which already exists, but cash means that you get to enforce it.

L A Times - Ferguson attorney: Michael Brown’s family settles with city for $1.5 million

he $1.5 million awarded this week to the parents of Michael Brown is the latest of several large settlements involving black suspects who were killed by police, but it’s far from the largest.

A federal judge in St. Louis on Tuesday approved the settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Michael Brown Sr. and Lezley McSpadden. Their 18-year-old son was unarmed on Aug. 9, 2014, when he was fatally shot by white officer Darren Wilson during a street confrontation in Ferguson, Mo.

The shooting launched months of protests and led to a U.S. Department of Justice investigation that found racial bias in Ferguson’s police and court system. But a St. Louis County grand jury and the Justice Department declined to prosecute Wilson, who resigned in November 2014.

Brown’s parents sued the city, former Police Chief Tom Jackson and Wilson in 2015, citing a police culture hostile to black residents and claiming Wilson used excessive force. Ferguson, Jackson and Wilson denied the allegations.

The case is among many in which huge settlements have been reached out of court, including many in which officers, like Wilson, were cleared of criminal wrongdoing.

U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber did not release the amount of the settlement, citing unspecified safety concerns. But Ferguson City Attorney Apollo Carey said in an email Friday in response to an open records request from the Associated Press that the city’s insurance company paid out $1.5 million.

While settlements are expensive, cities facing lawsuits in wrongful death cases are aware of the danger of going to trial, said James Cohen, a professor at Fordham University School of Law. He said the settlement amount could be dwarfed by an award granted by a jury sympathetic to the family.

“The city is afraid that someone on that jury is a member of Black Lives Matter, even if the juror is Caucasian,” Cohen said.

Settlements in some other recent high-profile cases have been much higher than the amount awarded to Brown’s parents.

In 2015, the city of North Charleston, S.C., paid $6.5 million to the family of Walter Scott, an unarmed black man who was killed by a white police officer while running from a traffic stop. The officer, Michael T. Slager, pleaded guilty in May to a civil rights violation.

A month earlier, Baltimore paid $6.4 million to the family of Freddie Gray, who suffered a fatal spinal injury in police custody. No officers were convicted.

New York City reached a $5.9-million settlement in July 2015 with the family of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died after being put in a chokehold by a white police officer. The officer was cleared by a grand jury.

Cleveland agreed to pay $6 million last year to the family of Tamir Rice. The 12-year-old had an airsoft gun that shoots nonlethal plastic pellets when a white officer shot him in 2014. A grand jury did not charge the officer.

Also last year, Pleasantville, N.Y., paid $6 million to the family of Danroy Henry Jr., a 20-year-old black college student shot to death by a white officer in 2010. No charges were filed against the officer.

Some award amounts this year have been lower. Madison, Wis., agreed to pay $3.35 million to relatives of 19-year-old Tony Robinson Jr., who was unarmed when he was fatally shot. Milwaukee reached a $2.3-million tentative settlement with the family of Dontre Hamilton, a man with schizophrenia who was shot by police. Arlington, Texas, reached an $850,000 settlement with the family of 19-year-old Christian Taylor, who was shot by an officer while allegedly vandalizing cars at a dealership. Police were not charged in any of those cases.

I just heard weather warnings for tornado warnings in southern Ohio and then checked some weather maps to see what’s up.

Half of Ohio is heavy to severe storms. From the Ohio River up to about Columbus.

In this parallel universe, the RWNJ howls of outrage at all this were so extreme that they became something more than mere sound and sent the earth spiraling out of its orbit to crash into the sun, thereby ending US politics in that dimension.

Let’s say someone with Trump’s level of elected experience and know how is the Democratic nominee. We saw how they reacted when Obama who had been in the Senate a few years and his state senate before that was treated. COMMUNITY ORGANIZER. Yeah and then you guys nominated Romney, who has spent more time running for President than actually being in office and then Trump who has a third grader’s understanding of Civics and I apologize to any third graders who might eb ofefnded by that.

Our family is in Seattle on our way to Alaska. We were at the Museum of Flight when SpaceX launched. They had it up on a huge screen and an educator from SpaceX walked us through it all. We were in the Space Pavillion, right next to the full-size training module for the Space Shuttle.

That was genuinely one of the coolest experiences of my life. Watching that rocket go up, in the middle of all of that history, then stick the Stage 1 landing on the drone. The cheering and high fives and my unladylike, “Holy shit, they landed it!”

So, for all of you fellow space nuts, it was awesome to watch the launch there with so many other space geeks…and cheer like football fans because a 14-story rocket stuck its landing.

Next launch is Sunday.

William Bradford, Donald Trump’s Energy department appointee, has a whole list of vile and hateful Tweets he is furiously deleting (and they are being preserved elsewhere).

Bradford acknowledged the deleted tweets and apologized for his “disrespectful” comments in an email to the [Washington] Post on Thursday.

“As a minority and member of the Jewish faith, I sincerely apologize for my disrespectful and offensive comments,” wrote Bradford, a member of the Chiricahua Apache Nation.

“These comments are inexcusable and I do not stand by them. Now, as a public servant, I hold myself to a higher standard, and I will work every day to better the lives of all Americans.”

The guy doesn’t realize that his tweets can and will be used in a court of law, at impeachment, and shows his utter contempt for the rule of law. Indeed, his actions show he has no interest in national security. He simply doesn’t care that Russia looks to have interfered in the US elections and was intent on manipulating the outcome.

Meanwhile, the argument is that Obama was trying to preserve democracy by not taking sides. An argument can be made he should have been more forceful in his concerns about Russian interference, but the case was still in the early stages of being made.

There was little that he could have done.

Put bluntly, the political system is not built to deal with that kind of subterfuge, especially when one of the political parties - the GOP - has no interest in self-reflection and upholding their oaths of office. They’re more interested in accumulating power and benefits to their entitled class of rich people than protecting the nation against threats foreign and domestic. They waved off concerns and warnings, claiming that they were likely to help Democrats in the end, rather than seeing it as preserving and protecting the nation from a foreign power interfering in the democratic process here.

Fuck McConnell and the reset of the GOP that enabled this nonsense. They are complicit in all this through their continued obstruction.
