Trump’s Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley Gloats About Defunding UN Peacekeeping Efforts

Then retweets a pious platitude
Politics • Views: 35,345

The United Nations has been a favorite target of the far right for many years, and in the Trump era these people finally have the power to start taking the kinds of actions they’ve longed for.

Last night, Trump’s ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, who like most of Trump’s appointees is dedicated to destroying the office she occupies, gloated on Twitter about their efforts to gut the UN’s peacekeeping budget.

Yes, she’s actually boasting about taking money away from peacekeeping efforts. In what world does this make any kind of sense?

The UN has its problems like any large organization, but on balance UN peacekeepers do far more good in the world than harm. Yet, here’s Nikki Haley posting a glamor shot with a huge smile, bragging about making the world less safe.

Then, to make it even more grotesque, Haley followed up by retweeting a pious platitude from “AmazingGrace.”

Inevitably, after tweeting these responses to Haley I was immediately attacked by right wingers yelling “take care of our own first!” — the same people who celebrate Trump’s cuts to healthcare, education, environmental protections, civil rights and infrastructure.

And if this happens, there will be no ACA repeal. The House won’t pass a bill that doesn’t inflict sufficient pain on those poor/sick people that didn’t live the right way, while simultaneously rewarding the rich for their moral fortitude and magnanimous trickling down of wealth for everyone.

A Cranky One  Jun 29, 2017 • 11:10:18am

So in her perpetual quest to harsh my crankiness, the spouse took me to a lovely dinner and show last night as an anniversary present.

Went to see King Crimson at the Chicago Theater. Great show, some amazing talent on display. I love seeing performances in smaller venues, especially those with good acoustics. They enforced a strict policy of no pictures or recording during the performance, with ushers constantly wandering the aisles checking. Multiple times during the show, Fripp would point to someone in the audience who was apparently violating the policy and security would point flashlights in that direction until the person put away their phone. After the performance the band stood on stage and announced pictures were now allowed, so of course I grabbed one. Photo quality sucks, but after a 3 hour show I wasn’t that interested in hanging in an attempt to get a better shot.

Mrs Cranky noted that the crowd was primarily composed of older white guys. I guess the photo shows the truth of that observation.

King Crimson after the show

Band included 4 (!!) drummer/percussionists! (a couple who also played keyboards) in addition to Mel Collins on woodwinds and flute, Tony Levin on bass and Chapman Stick (he produced some amazing riffs on that thing), Jakko Jakszyk doing guitar and vocals (and flute) and of course Fripp on guitar and keyboards.

A great time was had by all. Fortunately, I’ve got the current political situation to help revitalize my crankiness. ;-)

They are also talking about a Ted Cruz plan that would screw the upper middle class, i.e. GOP voters by turning the Obamacare exchanges into high risk pools, causing premiums for people who make too much money to get subsidies to skyrocket. It would be really funny if the GOP got so desperate to pass something that they did it by putting the screws to both their voters and their donors.

True. But it is going to be fun watching Joke trash Trump. Since many in D.C. watch Morning Joke every morning, this is being seen and heard by all of them. They can be useful tools if it helps make everyone sick of Trump’s behavior and leads to more and more talk of ejecting his butt.

I bet Trump watches too. He wants to roll in it. He will say he doesn’t but he would be lying. He likes to see the reaction he causes. He likes the attention…even if negative.

It might even change the tone in the Russian investigations. What better way to stay out of the fray from directly attacking Trump when you can work in the background building up what you need to punt his butt out of office.

Trump is making all this easier.
