Trump Suggests Doing Away With Obamacare and Replacing It With… Nothingcare

This man is not well
Politics • Views: 39,939

Remember a couple of days ago when Donald Trump said health care was “working along very well,” and promised a “great, great surprise” was coming?

YouTube

Well, this morning on Twitter he revealed his great surprise, and … SURPRISE, EVERYBODY! Now he wants to eliminate Obamacare and replace it with… nothing.

Trumpcare has now morphed, inevitably, into Nothingcare.

tr*mp is just being a normal Republican with this. As always, the Republican health care plan is: 1) Don’t get sick, 2) If you do get sick, die quickly.

This makes sense if you’re the kinda guy (which Don is) who bought into all that ‘09-‘10 bullshit about how Obama “had a majority and pissed it away.” The kinda guy who believes that a party having a majority means they can rule by fiat. He doesn’t quite get that the current bill is such a steaming turd that Sen. Yertle is gonna have to spend a significant chunk of those Trumpcare “savings” to win over enough votes just to reach 50. So the idea that he can get to 50 by promising a total repeal, which would mean fucking over WAY more than 22 million Americans, is bugfuck insane to a degree that I don’t think most Americans comprehend.

But, I think we have to remember that the man just learned today that South Korea is a major trade partner with the US.

MSNBC Fires Greta Van Susteren

We heard about that late yesterday morning. She wasn’t on last night. I watched the opening…not a peep was said about poor Greta. It was just “Breaking News.”

Articles on the ‘net said her numbers were horrible and she didn’t feel accepted.

Score a win for the liberals that still watch. One mistake and counting for Andy Lack and his desire to create a monster of both sides say it. Hopefully things go as well for Hugh Hewitt and Bret Stevens (just hired) and they aren’t there very long.

So that’s what, now? Seven states telling Pence and Kobach to go pound sand over their little Inquisition?

I wonder how many (if any) states - the ruby-red ones, natch - have jumped up to gleefully volunteer said info to the Disenfranchisement Board?

And on a more serious note, is there any legal basis (outside of the relevant state officials’ opposition or support) to challenge these information requests? Class-action suits, or the like?

re: #377 dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸

somebody tell me why twitter hasn’t banned trump

A few possibilities…
1) They are fearful of being blackmailed by Trump and/or Jared.
2) They have no logical business plan in place to remain viable, unlike Facebook et al, if he were to rage quit, get incarcerated or whatever fate beholds him.
3) They WANT the attention in any way possible. Trump threatening WWIII in a series of tweets that winds up with the state department running out of their offices with combustible hair guarantees more clicks.
4) DudeBro Libertarianism. Nuff said.
5) All of the above.

15
Targetpractice  Jun 30, 2017 • 10:44:53am

But Trump’s plan makes total sense when you consider it in light of his business record: Deny the agreed-upon compensation, then dangle out whatever little morsel you feel like while making it clear that rejection of that means the other party gets nothing. So a full repeal makes sense because Donny knows that whatever “replace” bill the GOP comes up with afterward will seem like manna from Heaven to those desperate to get any kind of healthcare.

A Cranky One  Jun 30, 2017 • 10:52:25am

The Republicans have had years to come up with an alternative to the ACA but apparently never bothered to do any actual work toward that end. So we get a couple of quickly thrown together bills that basically amount to tax cuts for the rich (the only type of bill they seem capable of creating, for any purpose and not just healthcare). Are we surprised? No.

Having more and more trouble dealing with the political situation in this country. On one hand, I believe that it’s my duty as a citizen to stay informed about issues and what’s happening with the country. On the other hand, being informed keeps me depressed and cranky as I watch the country being torn apart and our institutions destroyed.

So, I look for good and beauty where I can. With that in mind, here are a couple of photos of some of the new arrivals in Mrs Cranky’s garden.

And all the Democrats have to do is say we haven’t restricted anything, we haven’t been asked to help and besides let’s fix the ACA like some GOP Senators now favor.

America shows they like it…as it now polls above 50% and climbing by comparison and the replacements are less than 25%.

Also remind people who voted 60+ (or more…lost count) times to kill the ACA and had 8 years plus to replace. Proof the GOP can’t get it done.

You already have GOP Senate people agreeing this is the way forward. Make a big deal about that…welcome them with open arms and box Mitch out.

This is politics. The GOP doesn’t have all the strength in this anymore. They have blown it and are currently licking their wounds.

The Democrats have the opportunity here…how about backing them and keeping the pressure on the GOP and not acting all Chicken Little. That is what the Republicans want, why give it to them?

Here’s the thing: Anybody who’s hoping that the defeat of Trumpcare will negatively affect Trump in 2020 is betting on a losing hand. When the ACA turned to be full of compromises to get the Blue Dogs onboard, the DNC base was savage in its criticism and it showed in the midterms. And yeah, a lot of the base had gotten over that initial flash of anger by 2012, but there was still a significant portion who felt “betrayed” and stayed home or voted third party.

By contrast, come 2020, the list of people that the Trump base will blame if Trumpcare is not law will make War and Peace seem short. They’ll blame the DNC for opposing it, they’ll blame the Congressional GOP for not falling on their swords to pass it, they’ll blame the CBO for its “false” estimates, they’ll blame the media for “lying” about it, etc, etc. They will not hold him personally responsible, will not pay attention to his positions on it that shift like desert dunes, and the lies they’ll tell themselves will be more numerous than the stars in the sky.

Win, lose, or fail, the only people who will pay a political price for Trumpcare will be the Congressional GOP. The people who voted for Trump are too delusional to hold him responsible.

Lawmakers applaud after panel approves language revoking war authority

The House Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved an amendment that would revoke a 2001 law giving the president authority to undertake war against al Qaeda and its affiliates unless a replacement provision is created.

Lawmakers applauded when the amendment was added by voice vote to the defense spending bill, highlighting the frustration many members of Congress feel about the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which was initially approved to authorize the response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

It has since been used to justify the Iraq War and the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

I can only imagine that Mitch started swearing up a blue streak the moment somebody read Donny’s tweet to him. He’s spent weeks preparing his caucus to walk the plank on Trumpcare, lined up enough money to buy the votes necessary, probably already start coaching the “moderates” on what to say when the bill passes…and then he hears that the White House feels that it’s better to just to go with a slash-and-burn strategy. If Mitch isn’t wishing a pox on the House of Paul right about now, then he’s not taking his job seriously anymore.

That might be the only good news out of this. Trump’s under the impression that a repeal-only bill will emerge in the next 48 hours.

All he’s doing is ensuring that the tax giveaways to the top .05% and his budget fucking over of anyone and everyone outside of the top .05% gets delayed further.

How do you know Mitch even saw that tweet?

Remember, Mitch and the boys all tucked tails and took off last night. I bet the last thing Mitch wants right about now is a Trump tweet and any mention of healthcare legislation.

If he is cursing anything it is Obama getting the ACA through as the Law of the Land.

How many times have you heard people that really know politics say something like “it’s the law now and it is going to be hard to eliminate it.”

They are having a tough time eliminating it.

No, Mitch is back in Kentucky now. Probably incommunicado and nursing a gallon of Jack Daniels Black Label. He’ll need a couple more to get through the weekend too.

Mitch is a wounded man. He has shown he isn’t as powerful as everyone thought. He even admitted “healthcare is tough.” Bitching was easy.

That doesn’t mean a goddamned thing since repealing Obamacare affects those in Medicaid - specifically the Medicaid expansion.

So, does this mean that Trump will allow the expansion to continue, or push off the millions who gained coverage from Obamacare.

Trump’s response: Yes.

Trump doesn’t know a single goddamned thing about this, and there are multiple reports stating that he’ll simply agree with everyone in a room even when they’re saying the exact opposite. Those same reports also indicate he doesn’t grasp any of the concepts involved, and that all attempts to get him to understand it has fallen on deaf ears.

Regardless, thank goodness.

re: #54 ObserverArt

He’s watching Washington and the failures of the GOP. He is also watching Ohio Johnny Kasich fight his own Ohio Senate over the budget and healthcare.

Husted is smart enough to know Ohio is Purple-Blue and the voters can come back to bite him in the ass.

Also could have something to do with lining up the right ducks for his governor run.

And the GOP will claim the Democrats are covering up evidence of voter fraud. Its a win-win for Kobach.

That only lets him run his mouth, rather than purge voters, so he can have that win if he loses the other.

So far CA, KY, VA, MA, NC, MN, UT, OK, NY, TN & NM say they won’t hand over sensitive voter data to Kris Kobach

Also RI, where Sec’y of State went there:

The second request comes from the Vice Chair of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, Kris Kobach, who is also the Secretary of State of Kansas. Secretary Kobach was fined for misleading the courts in his own state of Kansas, where his attempts to disenfranchise Kansas voters have been overthrown by the courts. It is deeply troubling that he has been given oversight of this commission by the President.

Sad news today - Afghan Whigs guitarist Dave Rosser has passed away.

He worked with Greg Dulli in a couple of side projects and joined the Whigs when they reformed in 2014. This is a song from the reunion album ‘Do To The Beast.’ Like vintage Whigs, it’s both beautiful and menacing. RIP Dave.

No, it shouldn’t be difficult to generate the savings they need by canceling the subsidies and Medicaid expansion to pay for the tax cuts. The result would be monstrous as the individual markets in all the states would enter death spirals.

The only reason you would need a filibuster proof majority is if Trump opposed it. Would he actually care if I couldn’t keep my kids on the insurance?

You are thinking of overriding a veto. Filibustering keeps the bill from ever being voted on in the Senate.

No, it shouldn’t be difficult to generate the savings they need by canceling the subsidies and Medicaid expansion to pay for the tax cuts. The result would be monstrous as the individual markets in all the states would enter death spirals.

Weren’t there also Medicare cuts in ACA that if repealed would increase the deficit? I seem to recall something about this in various repeal discussions. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Mitch just declares that whatever they propose they can use reconciliation because.

Saving America from smart schoolgirls: Afghan teenagers denied visa for robotics competition

An all-girl team from the city of Herat in Afghanistan has been invited to the United States to participate in the prestigious FIRST Robotic Competition. Despite great difficulty in obtaining both supplies and instruction, the girls have worked hard to design, construct, and program a robot for the competition. With the help of the first female tech CEO in the nation, they’re polished their skills and prepared. And they’ve literally risked their lives to be a part of the contest.

To interview for their visas, the girls risked a 500 mile trek cross-country to the American embassy in Kabul - the site of several recent suicide attacks and one deadly truck bomb in early June that killed at least 90 people.

They’re one of only two countries denied visas, the other being Gambia.

RIP Dave.

I have it in my list with BONUS POINTS for that comment.

I’m up to 27 states—all either flat out no or “we’ll only give you public records” except for Missouri—big time ass-kissing there:

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, a Republican, called the commission’s requests fair and said that his office looks “forward to working with Secretary Kobach and the commission on its findings and offer our support in the collective effort to enhance the American people’s confidence in the integrity of the elections process.”

Oddly, Kobach has denied his own request in Kansas:

Kobach said Friday that Kansas also won’t be sharing Social Security information with the commission, for which he serves as vice chairman, at this time. The state will share other information about the state’s registered voters, including names and addresses, which are subject to the state’s open record laws.

Also getting bonus points, Wisconsin, for this:

Haas said that the president’s commission could buy more limited data on the full voter rolls from the state for $12,500 in the same way that many political campaigns do.

Though Americans argue over whether income taxes should

be higher or lower, there is consensus that they are a part of life. Inheritance and estate taxes, though, enjoy no such acceptance. Americans simply don’t like the concept of taxing inheritances, but the estate tax actually meshes well with the cherished American ideal of fairness—in fact, its vilification is partially the result of a calculated campaign on the part of those whom it benefits most.

An estimated $1 trillion is predicted to be passed down from estates annually in the coming decades, but the tax aimed at that money applies extremely infrequently: The left-of-center Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that only two out of every 1,000 estates pay any taxes on what’s handed down to the next generation. And that number represents a significant decline from what laws required a decade ago. In 2014, the IRS reported there were only 11,931 estate tax returns filed for the entire year, down 74 percent from 2005.

An estate tax repeal is a big budget hit, and it affects so few Americans that the venom about it is completely disproportionate.

The anti-estate tax folks love to treat this as though the tax hit family farmers, when the reality is the federal estate tax starts hitting people only if the estate is valued at $5.49 million or more.

There are a handful of states that impose estate tax, which can hit below the federal threshold.

GOP hates all that, even though this helps millionaires retain and pass on their wealth.

Kobach has always been a piece of work. He hasn’t cared so much about doing his job as Secretary of State so much as trying to disinfranchise minority and poor voters - the ones who’d be harmed most by the voter-ID laws and onerous requirements designed to fight a problem that simply is hyped all while suppression does far more harm.

A single person voting as someone else equals 2 total votes.

Kobach disinfranchising people can result in hundreds of thousands losing the right to vote and influence an election. That’s the real damage to society.

More human sacrifices to water the Tree of Liberty.

Well, that tree seem to be a standard decoration in a lot of offices around the country: the police are treating the Bronx Lebanon shooting as a (disgracefully standard) case of “workplace violence”, the late shooter being, apparently, the (disgracefully standard) “disgruntled ex-employee”, one Dr. Henry Bello, 45.

what we know about him now:

The shooter has been identified as Dr. Henry Michael Bello, a 45-year-old Nigeria-born family medicine doctor formerly employed at the hospital, according to sources.
Bello was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 17th floor after a two-story shooting rampage that left one doctor — a woman who has yet to be identified — dead and others fighting for their lives.

Officials said Bello tried to set himself on fire before committing suicide.

Sources tell NBC 4 New York a preliminary investigation reveals Bello resigned from the hospital in 2015 in lieu of termination.

Bello has past arrests for sex abuse, turnstile jumping, burglary and public urination, law enforcement sources said.

A few Hell to the no
Most—only public information (Wisconsin saying they can pay for it like a common person)
One (Missouri) saying gee, of course, whatevah you want, Mr. Kobach.

States I’m missing right now—let me know if you find anything:

Alabama
Alaska
Arkansas
Delaware
Florida
Hawaii
Idaho
Illinois
Iowa
Louisiana
Maine
Maryland
Nebraska
New Hampshire
New Jersey
North Dakota
Oregon
South Carolina
West Virginia
Wyoming

2) Republican’s rally around the shit-smeared flag of their foul overlord.

re: #269 jaunte

Here’s the problem with factual analysis like that - They. Don’t. Believe. It.

The standard answer from wingnuts to the question of income inequality (after “the rich are the most productive people in society!”) is that we have the greatest social mobility.

They see Europe as either something like pre-WWI Europe, with a rigidly fixed class system, or a socialist hellhole of shared poverty where NOBODY has anything. This is why saying ‘You don’t want to be like EUROPE!’ works, while people who have either traveled, or know somebody from Europe wonder what the hell they’re talking about.

They just KNOW that those people in the countries with universal healthcare all get cut off at 60 years old, that they can’t ever see a doctor, etc. When you point out that those countries all have better health outcomes by any measure, they make the handwaving “their populations are smaller and less diverse!”, as if that made any sense.

Technically it was Ashcroft who had his lips on Kobach’s ass.

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, a Republican, called the commission’s requests fair and said that his office looks “forward to working with Secretary Kobach and the commission on its findings and offer our support in the collective effort to enhance the American people’s confidence in the integrity of the elections process.”

Actually the less diverse argument makes sense — i.e. these countries don’t have a minority population that has been systematically discriminated against for centuries, treated as inferior, and is unable to access decent health care.

It’s worth noting that even in states in which a secretary of state has said that voter info won’t be provided to the federal government, voter info is in fact readily available for a nominal fee.

Yep, and in a few decades we’ll have to listen to Paris Hilton’s kid pontificate on why the starving should just eat cake.

Bad example; Paris Hilton’s inheritance from grandpa was enough to live pretty comfortably for her lifetime (approx $5M), but the bulk of her wealth is her own earnings in her own lifetime. Her family gave her the name, fame, education and connections, but she’s the one who parlayed that into income-producing activities.

And this comment by Ken Blackwell almost made me swallow my tongue.

This is the man who inspires the current White House.

I bet Buzz wishes he could punch The Donald in the face, and get away with it.

If anyone could punch Trump and get away with it, it’d be Aldrin.

More bear news:

Man reportedly walks away unscathed after black bear attack along Juneau trail

There was another report of bear(s) activities at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
At one location there was a sow with 4 cubs, another sow with 3 cubs, and yet two more sows with 2 cubs each. That’s 4 sows and 11 cubs in the same general area. There must be something in our water or fish that makes our bears very fertile.
