With all due respect to Rachel I’ve never really bought into the Trump is an intentional genius at distracting people from the thing they should be paying attention to via fresh outrage school of analysis. I think he’s just so consistently unhinged and fundamentally ill prepared for the Presidency that whatever fresh hell is being created and the scandal it ostensibly distracts from are essentially being iteratively produced on a constantly evolving assembly line of preternatural incompetence and psychotic reactionary rage.

Agree with this. I don’t think there’s any real plan. I also don’t think he’s comfortable with negative press. This entire blow up with Scarborough destroys any notion that Trump believes any press is good press.

Every few months, a journalist asks a scientist about the looming threat of Armageddon. That scientist’s quotes are then predictably blown out of proportion and turned into some iteration of “The End Is Nigh.” In light of Asteroid Day, which is today, we’d like to clarify some of the apocalyptic misinformation that’s spreading. As badly as we all want an asteroid to strike us squarely in the face at this point, that probably won’t be happening any time soon….
“There is quite a lot being done to prevent the Earth being stuck by a big asteroid, say half a kilometer across or larger,” Fitzsimmons told Gizmodo. While we know about most of the bigger asteroids, or Near Earth Objects (NEOs), in our solar neighborhood, smaller NEOs are the biggest immediate asteroid threat to certain regions on Earth, which is why scientists are trying to hunt them down.

(It dropped one of its drivers, and they said there was no way to reinstall just the driver. The driver was fouled up during an update to the software.)
Mozilla insisted my version of Firefox was going to implode if I didn’t update it right away.
Microsoft wants me to have this spiffy new update Creator which I doubt I’ll never use, but they insisted on it and shut my computer down for me.
Must be a four-hundred pound guy in a basement in New Jersey directing all this.

My wife also did a paper on nuclear weapons in seventh grade (1975) based on information in the school and St. Louis libraries. She got an A on her paper, on how both Little Boy and Fat Man operated. She had a classmate that did a paper on the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (the kid scored an interview with the head of the Fed branch there).
My wife went to a cooler school than I did (a school for gifted students - it required being in the 99th percentile based on standardised IQ tests). She had more people in one classroom than I had in my whole graduating class.
I happened to catch a little bit of the rerun of Hannity’s show this morning. A gang of 4 was having a panel discussion on “the Left’s war on Trump,” exactly as though it is literally treasonous to find fault with the orange one. Lumpy himself wasn’t even there yet but they announced in breathless tones that he would be on right after the next commercial. I changed channels at that point.
Rachel is wrong IMHO. I had two elderly parents afflicted with vascular dementia, plus one with alzheimer. I know dementia when I see it.

Dangerous game if true.

I’ve been saying for a long time that Trump is a reactionary know nothing. I think that still holds. He reacts to stuff around him, and takes action on whatever he thinks will inure benefit to him personally.
Engage in actions that undermine national security so long as he gains power? Sure.

Uh about that Firefox update. You may be a victim of a real nasty virus.
Firefox never asks you to do an update, they happen automatically usually the first time you access Firefox after it’s last use. Once you put Firfefox on your machine it is installed. Same as Chrome and others. The software will always update itself.
If you are in Firefox and all of a sudden a page takes over that looks like a big Firefox logo and asking you to update it probably is not good.
You can tell a lot of times because the URL address in the URL window will not be Firefox at all.
Do a Google search on “Firefox is asking me to do an important update” and you can read all about it.
Sorry! First line of computer defense…do not believe anything you see. Check through Google first about something you are being asked to do, never take a pop-up or a window change you didn’t initiate as legit. Copy the URL and message (or write it down) and then do a search. Almost 100% of the time you will see a scam because they happen to everyone.

Uh about that Firefox update. You may be a victim of a real nasty virus.
Firefox never asks you to do an update, they happen automatically usually the first time you access Firefox after it’s last use. Once you put Firfefox on your machine it is installed. Same as Chrome and others. The software will always update itself.
If you are in Firefox and all of a sudden a page takes over that looks like a big Firefox logo and asking you to update it probably is not good.
You can tell a lot of times because the URL address in the URL window will not be Firefox at all.
Do a Google search on “Firefox is asking me to do an important update” and you can read all about it.
Sorry! First line of computer defense…do not believe anything you see. Check through Google first about something you are being asked to do, never take a pop-up or a window change you didn’t initiate as legit. Copy the URL and message (or write it down) and then do a search. Almost 100% of the time you will see a scam because they happen to everyone.

I point out that the GOP has always been like this. Nixon’s Southern Strategy, Reagan kicking off his campaign on the site of slain civil rights leaders and inviting wingnut evangelicals into party positions, people like Grover Norquist and Frank Luntz, &c.
The party hasn’t moved rightward leaving the moderates behind. The party went rightward in Goldwater’s day, Buckley Jr.’s day, or even in McCarthy’s day. There has never been a time in either of our lives that the GOP was not moving further right.
It fascistic tendencies now are the logical outcome of decades of strategy by the party itself. What happened is some people (like her) did not want to be dragged along with the natural movement of the party. That is not the same thing as the “party leaving her.”

I never do updates to any of my software except through the software’s own update service (the about menu in Firefox, the HP Support Assistant for my computer’s drivers, Windows Control Panel for Windows and Office, &c.)
There was a question the other day about why it would cost so much to do single payer, and the answer is that California law requires 40% of all revenue to go for education. Thus, you have to take that into account any time taxes need to go up.

The mall now is an anchor for business in that part of Scottsbluff, but curiously is not affecting the downtown businesses.

I had a high school history teacher that was. Instead, an idiot. Things like getting the date of President Kennedy’s assassination wrong ( confused it with his brother’s) and wouldn’t admit the error. I stopped attending class and finally the guidance counselor arranged for me to a paper in place of the attendance. I did a long paper on the design and construction of nuclear weapons equivalent to Fat Man and Little Boy using open sources. I didn’t do too bad - got an A from the idiot and when I recently found a copy and double checked my work (lots more open now than in 1980) I found the gun type Uranium bomb would have fizzled but the implosion bomb was correct and probably would have had a higher yield than I’d originally guessed. Looking at the North Korean test results makes me wonder WTF they are really doing since they are the only ones, ever, to fail like that.
Well, I posted before about my trip through High School Hell. It was an endless torture in a school whose sole focus was producing a winning football team. Teachers made it clear they did not like me, mainly because they hated my liberal Democratic Grandfather who was on the Borough Council. My skin got chitinous from all of the insults and screaming I had to deal with them on a daily basis. As for the students, well if you played football and made the team every teacher kissed your ass. Didn’t make the team, well, you were a non-person. I was very good at chess, but the teacher who ran the chess club wouldn’t allow me to participate. I did get even by becoming a sharp bridge player and partnering with the football coaches wife. We won a bunch of tournaments held in the Moose and Elks clubs in town. Oh, it was such a pleasure to see Coach Asshole SEETHE at that.
The happiest day of my life is when I walked out of that concentration camp for the last time.

I was persona non grata amongst the teachers and the students in my high school. (I had to do American History in my senior year because I was out of the country as an exchange student in my junior year so I was particularly harassed in that class.)
One week after I graduated I was in boot camp.
Now, following those I graduated with on a certain high school alumni Website, I see that the majority of them are stuck in lives of “quiet desperation” and have really done little in their lives. Most have never travelled farther than the state capital.
Though I live in a rural area now, I am really glad I got out of central Michigan. After my Navy tour, I am much happier here than I ever would be in the place I grew up.

My 45th high school reunion comes up next year. I’ve never attended but I’ve had friends send pictures and gave me the latest scoops. Seems that the class brain who got a scholarship to Princeton flunked out in his first semester, then started taking a lot of LSD and wound up in an assisted living facility. The Big Jock has been divorced several times and is up to his neck in child support and alimony payments. The Cheerleader Captain has multiple divorces that left her fondling the grape in mass quantities. The football players who were the pampered puppies foud out that their lives peaked at 18 and they’ve gone downhill ever since. And it’s shocking to me to realize that of the 365 in my graduating class, 2/3 have passed away…and AIDS took a large chunk of the boy’s lives…

If state or Federal law required me to obtain liability insurance (negligent handling resulting in injury or property damage, &c), I would have no complaint about that. (I am actually in favour of such a policy programme - it could potentially offer premium discounts for proof or continuing training in firearms safety, &c.) It would be liability insurance however (like a car), not a legal defence fund.

I was one of the nerds in high school. I had a few nerd friends, we touch base on rare occasions. When the high school reunion came up, there was an argument between everyone about where to hold it… seems that the rift between the rich kids and the poor kids hadn’t healed in the previous 10 years. We wound up not even having a reunion at all. Pretty typical for us.

I went to my 10th. I have to say, it was quite rewarding to see that all the girls that were such hot stuff in high school, the cheerleaders and beauty queens, were fat and divorced. And the studly guys, the jocks, were fat, divorced and bald.
(except one. There was a football player/prom king/valedictorian who played varsity at Stanford, then spent 8 years as a 49er while attending Stanford Med School in the off-season. He’s now an orthopedic surgeon with 3 Super Bowl rings.)

I went from getting D’s in algebra in HS to tutoring algebra in college. I hated everything about HS. The way the teachers treated us (not all, I had a few I liked quite a lot) to the punk ass kids (much like real life today, some people are good, some suck). HS was tortuous where college was freeing.

High Schools are torture chambers. You can tell how a lot of the trauma sticks after so many years. Teenagers are mixed up and having difficult times finding themselves and where they fit in society. High Schools should help one find their way through it all. Instead it seems to make it worse in many ways.
I can only imagine what it is like today with all the politics making the whole country crazy, all the internet sites where the problems of school can be made even worse and all the crazy stuff available out on the streets.

In high school, I was the kid who wanted to be liked and worked hard at getting schoolwork done. I didn’t even realize how much I’d actually hated high school until I got to college and realized how bizarre and screwed-up everyone had been back home.
This year’s my class’ 30th reunion. I haven’t been to any of them. I’ve seen the pictures they posted of the previous reunions, and it was mostly full of people I didn’t know or didn’t like.
Really, most of my high school classmates turned out to be wingnuts. What’s depressing is how many of my friends from college turned out to be even crazier. :/

It may have been said (partially) in jest, but it has been done; as a matter of fact, we here in Nashville have an older mall (100 Oaks) that was leased out long-term by Vanderbilt University and turned into mixed medical/retail space, with the majority of space serving as a satellite location of Vanderbilt University Medical Center (mostly for doctor’s offices).

Florida’s House Bill 989, aimed at empowering Floridians to object to the use of specific instructional materials in the public schools, was signed into law by Governor Rick Scott on June 26, 2017, according to the Tampa Bay Times (June 26, 2017). The bill was previously passed by both chambers of the Florida legislature in April and May 2017.
As NCSE previously reported, climate change and evolution were clearly among the targets of HB 989. Supporters of the bill submitted affidavits that complained, “I have witnessed students being taught evolution as fact … rather than theory … I have witnessed children being taught that Global Warming is a reality.”
With the law now in place, any county resident — not just any parent with a child in the country’s public schools, as was the case previously — can now file a complaint about instructional materials in the county’s public schools, and the school will now have to appoint a hearing officer to hear the complaint.
Brandon Haught of Florida Citizens for Science commented on the organization’s blog (June 26, 2017), “This means our fight is only just now beginning. Each and every one of us has to be on alert. You must keep an eye on your local school board and everyone who brings forth a complaint about textbooks. If you don’t, we truly lose.”
Haught also expressed concern that a recently enacted “religious liberties” law — Senate Bill 436 — would be wielded in conjunction with HB 989 to undermine evolution education in Florida, citing a Frontline article (May 8, 2017) that quoted a backer of both bills as vowing to do just that.

Can’t have education. Throughout history, without exception, conservatism has stood in the way of progress and enlightenment.
It will take fights by individuals in local school boards to ward this off, which means people who care about things such as truth over religious inculcation with tax money will have to be politically engaged. If they do not engage in local politics (all politics is local), they will race to the bottom with Mississippi and Texas (and that isn’t far for Florida to go).

Until the Constitution is revised to eliminate the Electoral College, like it or not square miles get votes. While Democrats have to keep an eye on the voters, running up the score in California or Massachusetts does not win elections. Democrats must win square miles.
Wasn’t that long ago President Obama took an electoral vote in my state, and we had a Democratic representative. Then Dems got lazy in 2010, the Tea Party got out the vote everywhere and ran candidates in every place they could, because they understood square miles actually matter.

Heh. I first saw it when my father and I were walking through a mall parking lot and he stopped looked down and said “looks like someone dumped their pot” and I ran up and looked. I remember the little round seeds. They stood out, because the rest was all wet and mushed down.
Years later, I was already in college (and it was art school in the 70s so yeah I had seen quite a lot of pot, etc. by then) and I had the chance to ask my dad about that.
it was the perfect set-up. At a family get-together my conservative blockhead brother was going on about pot one day and I knew his kids (my niece and nephew) smoked, so they were cowering and looking down.
To break it up, I asked my dad about that day in the parking lot and I told him I always wondered how he knew it was marijuana. He said he and his brothers (my uncles) smoked it back in the 30s in the bootleg days. I kind of figured that, how else did he know and identify it so quickly?
Shut my brother right up. He was stunned. So were my niece and nephew.
I think a lot of people like my brother think marijuana was discovered in 1966 and was a huge problem that would end the world as they knew it.
