With all due respect to Rachel I’ve never really bought into the Trump is an intentional genius at distracting people from the thing they should be paying attention to via fresh outrage school of analysis. I think he’s just so consistently unhinged and fundamentally ill prepared for the Presidency that whatever fresh hell is being created and the scandal it ostensibly distracts from are essentially being iteratively produced on a constantly evolving assembly line of preternatural incompetence and psychotic reactionary rage.

In the same way that the skunk’s musk and the octopus’ ink is a defensive external projection of the self Trump projects his own darkest flaws and shortcomings upon his perceived opponents.

Agree with this. I don’t think there’s any real plan. I also don’t think he’s comfortable with negative press. This entire blow up with Scarborough destroys any notion that Trump believes any press is good press.

And I doubt that Trump was much tutored by Roy Cohn. More likely that they saw the bullying asshole in each other, recognized a kindred spirit. Knowing Trump now, I’d say he probably lapped up Cohn’s flattery and attention, oblivious to Cohn’s homosexuality. After all, that seems to be all that has ever mattered to this moonstruck clynchpoop.

Kevin Williamson is an Ass, but he is spot on here.

Trump may have his problems with women, but it is his unrequited love of the media that is undoing him.

“I always tell the president, ‘You don’t need them,’” says Sean Hannity, the self-abasing monkey-butler of the Trump regime. The president, Hannity says, can reach more Americans via Twitter than he could through the conventional media. That isn’t true, of course: Only about one in five Americans uses Twitter. Hannity might be forgiven for not knowing this, a consequence of his much more general habit of not knowing things. But he actually does know the president.
How could he possibly believe that this man — this man — does not need them?

He needs them the way a junkie needs his junk.

Bummer: Giant Asteroids Not An Immediate Threat

Every few months, a journalist asks a scientist about the looming threat of Armageddon. That scientist’s quotes are then predictably blown out of proportion and turned into some iteration of “The End Is Nigh.” In light of Asteroid Day, which is today, we’d like to clarify some of the apocalyptic misinformation that’s spreading. As badly as we all want an asteroid to strike us squarely in the face at this point, that probably won’t be happening any time soon….

“There is quite a lot being done to prevent the Earth being stuck by a big asteroid, say half a kilometer across or larger,” Fitzsimmons told Gizmodo. While we know about most of the bigger asteroids, or Near Earth Objects (NEOs), in our solar neighborhood, smaller NEOs are the biggest immediate asteroid threat to certain regions on Earth, which is why scientists are trying to hunt them down.

“The past two decades have seen continuous sky surveys (almost all by the United States) find 90% of the Near-Earth Asteroids bigger than a kilometer across, and many of the sub-km asteroids. So that’s a whole bunch of asteroids we’re pretty safe from in the next 100 years.”

New theory, through Trump we’re witnessing so many individual instances of (behavioral, moral/ethical, economic, diplomatic & geo-strategic) wrongness, scandal & failure that they’ve collectively begun to metaphysically fold in on themselves, tearing space-time apart under the collective weight and catalyzed incongruous reality of their combined inexplicably immense collective intellectual valuelessness, producing an emergent metaphysical gestalt organism comprised entirely of pure socio-polical fuckery.

One part of me is all, “do it, do it, do it” but another part of me is like, “OMG, the sideshow, and can you expect that Trump wouldn’t try to pull executive privilege during depositions and document production?”

And then I started wondering where a trial would be held—the three places I can think of (New York City, Washington D.C. and Atlanta) based on the location of CNN and Trump, I was thinking, “oh this could become a cluster very quickly.” Look at hard it was to seat a jury to try Shkreli!

ETA: On top of all that, I’m not sure we want to have New York Times v. Sullivan and that line of cases which established the “public figure” standard to be under scrutiny right now. I just foresee bad things happening.

Trump’s Election Fraud Commission Asked States to Send Sensitive Voter Information Over Insecure Email

The White House on Wednesday requested that every state surrender a laundry list of voter data, including partial social security numbers, using an insecure email address unprotected by even basic encryption technology.

Encouraging state election officials to transmit voter data insecurely belies the White House’s stated goal of improving the security and integrity of federal election systems.

I am still convinced that Pence is dirtier than Trump in terms of Kremlin influence. Russia paid little attention to Trump before he became a candidate. The religious right, otoh, has been rotten with Russian influence since at least 2009. There is no way Kremlin influence agents would have ignored so prominent a religious right leader as Pence. Indeed, it is possible that the Russians influenced Pence’s VP selection itself.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Disney will remove the infamous “bride auction” scene from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland next year, the company announced on Thursday.

During the planned ride refurbishment, Disney will alter the roles of the auctioneer, the redhead woman and other characters participating in the “Auction: Take a Wench for a Bride” scene.

Of course the comments on this story are full of people complaining about “feminism” and “political correctness”, because some people can’t enjoy a theme park ride without a little sex slavery.

Re: Trump’s “strategy” I think Adam Gopnik said it best here:

This is the habit of willfully substituting, as a motive for Trump’s latest action, a conventional political or geostrategic ambition, rather than recognizing the action as the daily spasm of narcissistic gratification and episodic vanity that it truly is.

As for it “working” maybe your theory is correct - ha ha - but I wasn’t thinking of anything that complicated. He just continues to again and again paper over old outrages with new outrages, so that we’re basically forced to forget about, and move on from, the prior outrages. Obviously the fact that this has worked for him is not in any way a credit to him, but rather a harsh indictment of (a nontrivial portion of) the American public.

My high school government teacher (my government class was the equivalent of what most call civics) was somewhere to the right of William F. Buckley, Jr. whilst I was still the same socialist leftie I am now.

We would regularly have class discussions in which he would come after my positions (it wasn’t personal). At the end of the year, he noted to the class that I was the first person he’d ever given an “A” to in the class - not because he agreed with my positions, but I defended them both in papers and in class.

Well, it would appear computer firms are all colluding to tie my computer up with updates all at the same time (that’s why I was out earlier).

Hewlett-Packard insisted on a driver update for my camera that I don’t use and a computer re-start.

My paid version of Spybot fouled up last week, and the company said today the correction was to uninstall, shut my computer down, then re-install it. (It dropped one of its drivers, and they said there was no way to reinstall just the driver. The driver was fouled up during an update to the software.)

Mozilla insisted my version of Firefox was going to implode if I didn’t update it right away.

Microsoft wants me to have this spiffy new update Creator which I doubt I’ll never use, but they insisted on it and shut my computer down for me.

I had a high school history teacher that was. Instead, an idiot. Things like getting the date of President Kennedy’s assassination wrong ( confused it with his brother’s) and wouldn’t admit the error. I stopped attending class and finally the guidance counselor arranged for me to a paper in place of the attendance. I did a long paper on the design and construction of nuclear weapons equivalent to Fat Man and Little Boy using open sources. I didn’t do too bad - got an A from the idiot and when I recently found a copy and double checked my work (lots more open now than in 1980) I found the gun type Uranium bomb would have fizzled but the implosion bomb was correct and probably would have had a higher yield than I’d originally guessed. Looking at the North Korean test results makes me wonder WTF they are really doing since they are the only ones, ever, to fail like that.

My wife also did a paper on nuclear weapons in seventh grade (1975) based on information in the school and St. Louis libraries. She got an A on her paper, on how both Little Boy and Fat Man operated. She had a classmate that did a paper on the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (the kid scored an interview with the head of the Fed branch there).

My wife went to a cooler school than I did (a school for gifted students - it required being in the 99th percentile based on standardised IQ tests). She had more people in one classroom than I had in my whole graduating class.

I’m inclined towards the Hiesenburg theory: Werner Heisenberg directed the physics of the Nazi atomic bomb program until the end of the war. It was famous for chasing the dead end of heavy water reactors. Yet the story goes that while in captivity in England after VE day, when Heisenberg heard of the bombings in Japan, he described the physics correctly to his team (while bugged by the English) implying he knew how to build a bomb all along but chose to FUBAR the program instead. Dangerous game if true.

Uh about that Firefox update. You may be a victim of a real nasty virus.

Firefox never asks you to do an update, they happen automatically usually the first time you access Firefox after it’s last use. Once you put Firfefox on your machine it is installed. Same as Chrome and others. The software will always update itself.

If you are in Firefox and all of a sudden a page takes over that looks like a big Firefox logo and asking you to update it probably is not good.

You can tell a lot of times because the URL address in the URL window will not be Firefox at all.

Do a Google search on “Firefox is asking me to do an important update” and you can read all about it.

Sorry! First line of computer defense…do not believe anything you see. Check through Google first about something you are being asked to do, never take a pop-up or a window change you didn’t initiate as legit. Copy the URL and message (or write it down) and then do a search. Almost 100% of the time you will see a scam because they happen to everyone.

Just another day in NRA’s America where more blood feeds the Tree of Liberty…

Okay, I think we need to define the terminology, because as I understood it, “active shooter” meant that someone was actively shooting people. Which would, by definition, make any mass shooting an “active shooter” situation.

re: #52 William Lewis

I’m inclined towards the Hiesenburg theory: Werner Heisenberg directed the physics of the Nazi atomic bomb program until the end of the war. It was famous for chasing the dead end of heavy water reactors. Yet the story goes that while in captivity in England after VE day, when Heisenberg heard of the bombings in Japan, he described the physics correctly to his team (while bugged by the English) implying he knew how to build a bomb all along but chose to FUBAR the program instead. Dangerous game if true.

That scene was included in the Einstein bio-drama I just finished watching; Heisenberg had *such* a smug look on his face when he said to his cell-mates “oh, sure, I can explain it, get me some paper and a pencil…”

Hamilton’s Choice

In the eyes of the novelist Ralph Ellison, the tragic dimension of American life could not be found in any individual story of thwarted political ambition. Rather the tragedy was the very belief that America actually constituted a worthy object of desire. To Ellison American exceptionalism was only sustainable if one willfully forgot that this comic order required a scapegoat, upon whom the vices and failures of the social order were projected. In other words, the American dream rested on the exploitation and exclusion of others—usually people of color, though certainly not exclusively. In reflecting on the interrelation of the romantic, comic, and tragic in American literature, Ellison observes:

the rising American industrialists of the late nineteenth century were to rediscover what their European counterparts had learned a century before: that the good man Friday was as sound an investment for [Robinson] Crusoe morally as he was economically, for not only did Friday allow Crusoe to achieve himself by working for him, but by functioning as a living scapegoat to contain Crusoe’s guilt over breaking with the institutions and authority of the past, he made it possible to exploit even his guilt economically. The man was one of the first missionaries. Mark Twain was alive to this irony and refused such an easy (and dangerous) way out. Huck Finn’s acceptance of the evil implicit in his ‘emancipation’ of Jim represents Twain’s acceptance of his personal responsibility for the condition of society. This was the tragic face behind the comic mask.

I have Firefox set to not automatically update; it simply throws up a box saying an update is available. (I then go to the “about” page to update it.)

A police officer shot and killed an Asian teenager a couple of weeks back in Seattle and a friend just posted the article on her Facebook feed (written by Shaun King). Here’s the derpsplosion:

Your the last person I thought that would sit in judgement of others, you have no clue what today’s police go thru !

Yes, because the stress of being a police officer means you get to shoot somebody on sight without trying to find out whether they’re even carrying a dangerous weapon, let alone actually attack you. This is how these people think; this is the origin of “Blue Lives Matter”. Police are entitled to do whatever the fuck they want, because hero worship.

I point out that the GOP has always been like this. Nixon’s Southern Strategy, Reagan kicking off his campaign on the site of slain civil rights leaders and inviting wingnut evangelicals into party positions, people like Grover Norquist and Frank Luntz, &c.

The party hasn’t moved rightward leaving the moderates behind. The party went rightward in Goldwater’s day, Buckley Jr.’s day, or even in McCarthy’s day. There has never been a time in either of our lives that the GOP was not moving further right.

It fascistic tendencies now are the logical outcome of decades of strategy by the party itself. What happened is some people (like her) did not want to be dragged along with the natural movement of the party. That is not the same thing as the “party leaving her.”

Malls are still big here in the Czech Republic - it’s like 1980’s America in some ways. But eventually, what’s happening in the US will ultimately happen here.

Give it another 20 to 25 years.

transcript excerpts from West Wing, s.6 ep 17 “A Good Day”
in which we accidentally invade Canada

Unless you want an update on the Canada situation.
Right.
Canada.
Go on.
As you know, tensions along the 49th parallel have been growing.
- What’s their beef? - Good one.
Our ban on live Canadian cattle exports is a catalyst but I wouldn’t reduce this to a simple mad-cow conflict.
- I’ll avoid that.
- Hostilities escalated dramatically at the start of snow goose hunting.
Certain Canadian ranchers posted - “no trespass” signs on property.
- Canadian property? Yes, but where their Montana neighbors had hunted quarry for generations.
- Are you from Interior? - Fish and Wildlife, ma’am.
While an American party was setting out decoys this morning Canadians surrounded them. It’s unclear whether Americans have been taken hostage.
- Hostage? - Well, that’s affirm.
- Local law enforcement can’t? - Before officials could respond one of the hunters, a retired Montana state trooper, called in backup.
Off-duty officers responded, and they infiltrated - the swath demarking the border.

- Shots been fired? Yes, but there were geese in the air at the time.

The prime minister wishes to emphasize the unofficial nature of the ranchers ’ declaration of war against the United States.
- Thank you.
- You have seen their demands - on Canadian television? - We have.
Security officers at Waterton-Glacier National Park are on ready response.
Reinforcements may be crossing over through Peace Park.
We’re concerned about reports of escalation.
An effigy burning in Alberta.
A response to your governor of Montana.
He mentioned calling in the National Guard.
He referred to a contingency plan to invade Canada.
That is absurd.
There is no U.S. contingency plan to Are you there? I was saying, we trust that local officials will resolve this very soon.
We’ll be in touch.
We have a contingency plan to invade Canada? - Would you like to be briefed? - Other developments? - A sawmill in Climax is piling on.

Ambassador, listen carefully.
An hour ago I reviewed the U.S.
contingency plan to invade your country.
- There’s a contingency plan? -1789, amended in 1815.
The calligraphy is beautiful.

- An American helicopter entered Canadian airspace and emergency-landed half a click from the standoff? - Yes, ma ‘am.
- This was a UH-1 H helicopter? - Yes, ma ‘am.
- A Huey? They make civilian aircraft.
We have deniability.
Not deniability.
I want absolute assurance - this was not part of a military action.
- I can’t vouch for Black Ops.
Enough.
This is stopping now.
The problem is not a few rowdy outlaws blowing off testosterone.
The problem is us.
We’re the Wild Bunch.
The higher we go, the hotter the risk.
I just threatened the Canadian ambassador.
Someone on the ground has got - Okay, officer, are you still there? - I am.
Who is the ranking Canadian officer at the scene? - The Grasslands EcoRegion director.
- Does he have access to a bullhorn? - It could be arranged.
- Okay.
What if? It’s just past midnight, Mountain time.
Announce the end of hunting season.
- Not till next week.
- It just ended at midnight.
Anyone discharging a firearm is subject to immediate, permanent loss - of their hunting license.
- That could work.
- They don’t fool around with hunting.
- Give it a shot.

Trilby abuse:

I just went out to the store, then took out the trash.

There was a Fifties-style trilby in the Dumpster. (The hat is no longer suitable for wear.) I have three trilbies (a pink one my wife bought from Target, a white paper one I bought in Alliance, and a handmade felt black one my wife bought for me in Poland). I would never throw away a trilby, they should either be memorialised with a funeral pyre, or buried with honour.

I have no doubt.

Nothing is slimier than a married man who tries to seduce another woman —married or not. I’ve had it happen and I can almost see the man turn into one of those bar reptiles Hunter S. Thompson talked about in Fear and Loathing.

That is how I see Trump.

The Monument Mall in Scottsbluff was dying. A development firm bought the mall, rehabilitated it both in and out, got new anchor stores for the ones that had closed, rebuilt the streets around it at their expense, and did a grand re-opening.

The mall now is an anchor for business in that part of Scottsbluff, but curiously is not affecting the downtown businesses.

I’d think they would be great medical centers — A place for the elderly to do their walking, good jobs for conserage types and wheel chair pushers (like at the airport). The big anchor stores could be surgical centers or office buildings.

re: #47 William Lewis

Well, I posted before about my trip through High School Hell. It was an endless torture in a school whose sole focus was producing a winning football team. Teachers made it clear they did not like me, mainly because they hated my liberal Democratic Grandfather who was on the Borough Council. My skin got chitinous from all of the insults and screaming I had to deal with them on a daily basis. As for the students, well if you played football and made the team every teacher kissed your ass. Didn’t make the team, well, you were a non-person. I was very good at chess, but the teacher who ran the chess club wouldn’t allow me to participate. I did get even by becoming a sharp bridge player and partnering with the football coaches wife. We won a bunch of tournaments held in the Moose and Elks clubs in town. Oh, it was such a pleasure to see Coach Asshole SEETHE at that.

The happiest day of my life is when I walked out of that concentration camp for the last time.

Sean Hannity is moving right up the line (along with the maladministration) of declaring all other media outlets “enemies of the State.” (We’re getting into Nazi Germany territory now, where opposition media outlets were enemies of the State, then shut down.)

Right now the courts are still upholding the law, and the FBI and intelligence agencies are still digging and investigating, but what happens if those also come under attack from State Media (FOX)?

For now, Voice of America is still (mostly) free of influence from the maladministration (though they’ve promoted both Trump’s hotels and Ivanka Trump’s book). You know President Bannon has to be looking at a way to gain control of VOA. (Proposals have already gone out for restructuring the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the controlling body of VOA.)

I was persona non grata amongst the teachers and the students in my high school. (I had to do American History in my senior year because I was out of the country as an exchange student in my junior year so I was particularly harassed in that class.)

One week after I graduated I was in boot camp.

Now, following those I graduated with on a certain high school alumni Website, I see that the majority of them are stuck in lives of “quiet desperation” and have really done little in their lives. Most have never travelled farther than the state capital.

Though I live in a rural area now, I am really glad I got out of central Michigan. After my Navy tour, I am much happier here than I ever would be in the place I grew up.

As I’ve noted, I own a shotgun.

If state or Federal law required me to obtain liability insurance (negligent handling resulting in injury or property damage, &c), I would have no complaint about that. (I am actually in favour of such a policy programme - it could potentially offer premium discounts for proof or continuing training in firearms safety, &c.) It would be liability insurance however (like a car), not a legal defence fund.

This NRA plan doesn’t sound like it would cover things like injury or property damage due to negligence or unlawful discharge of a firearm, is that correct?

That’s not what it’s about. They are concerned that with the government overstepping its constitutional bounds.”

Didn’t research very hard then, since there are tons of photos and film of these groups marching or flying Dixie Swastikas, White Power flags, &c.

I was one of the nerds in high school. I had a few nerd friends, we touch base on rare occasions. When the high school reunion came up, there was an argument between everyone about where to hold it… seems that the rift between the rich kids and the poor kids hadn’t healed in the previous 10 years. We wound up not even having a reunion at all. Pretty typical for us.

My thirty-ninth graduation anniversary is this year (I don’t feel so old now).

I have never been invited to a class reunion, though my high school has always had my current address. Guess they don’t want me there.

I went to my 10th. I have to say, it was quite rewarding to see that all the girls that were such hot stuff in high school, the cheerleaders and beauty queens, were fat and divorced. And the studly guys, the jocks, were fat, divorced and bald.

(except one. There was a football player/prom king/valedictorian who played varsity at Stanford, then spent 8 years as a 49er while attending Stanford Med School in the off-season. He’s now an orthopedic surgeon with 3 Super Bowl rings.)

I missed the 20th, 30th. The 40th is coming up this year, and I won’t be going.

An obvious trend? The top viral emotions tend to be extremely positive, which echoes previous research. However, although negative emotions like hate, reproach, and resentment were reported far less than positive emotions, our data indicates that they can still generate a viral hit — you just have to strike the right combinations of arousal and dominance.

Same here. When I graduated I did not want to go back to any type of school. Then I went to college. What a huge difference. I am glad to have my college diploma.

I went from getting D’s in algebra in HS to tutoring algebra in college. I hated everything about HS. The way the teachers treated us (not all, I had a few I liked quite a lot) to the punk ass kids (much like real life today, some people are good, some suck). HS was tortuous where college was freeing.

I had no friends in high school. (Literally, no friends.) In my senior year (where I was at a new school), in a maths class I caught on to others copying from quiz papers.

After I caught that out, I went through my next quiz and intentionally marked all wrong answers on the quiz. I hung back to the end of class and changed all my answers in the last few minutes after most had turned in their tests.

I was really hated when most of the class flunked the quiz and I aced it. After that, the word spread very quickly in my new school I was to be shunned. (No one ever copied off my papers again though.)

On team class projects, no one wanted to be a teammate with me.

I didn’t give a hoot about what they thought though. I wasn’t there for a popularity contest, I was there for an education.

Man, I hated high school. And I was a serious, serious non-conformist. I refused to wear the “muff” (bared shoulders for girls with this fuzzy muff thing for a “neckline”) for the high school senior picture because I thought it was indecent and it went against my (then) religious beliefs. As a result, my picture did not end up in the 1978 yearbook. Nearly 40 years later, I’d do the same thing, because I would not want anyone thinking I wasn’t wearing a bra.

Part of the reason for my serious unpopularity - besides being a nerd - was that I moved into the area during 3rd/4th grade. (I skipped 3rd grade, but that was where I would have been placed at the time I moved.) Obviously, most people were already friends with each other by then, and I was the new kid. High Schools are torture chambers. You can tell how a lot of the trauma sticks after so many years. Teenagers are mixed up and having difficult times finding themselves and where they fit in society. High Schools should help one find their way through it all. Instead it seems to make it worse in many ways.

I can only imagine what it is like today with all the politics making the whole country crazy, all the internet sites where the problems of school can be made even worse and all the crazy stuff available out on the streets.

In high school, I was the kid who wanted to be liked and worked hard at getting schoolwork done. I didn’t even realize how much I’d actually hated high school until I got to college and realized how bizarre and screwed-up everyone had been back home.

This year’s my class’ 30th reunion. I haven’t been to any of them. I’ve seen the pictures they posted of the previous reunions, and it was mostly full of people I didn’t know or didn’t like.

Really, most of my high school classmates turned out to be wingnuts. What’s depressing is how many of my friends from college turned out to be even crazier. :/

I’d think they would be great medical centers — A place for the elderly to do their walking, good jobs for conserage types and wheel chair pushers (like at the airport). The big anchor stores could be surgical centers or office buildings.

Buses and public transportation already have mall service.

re: #205 Birth Control Works

No, I said that before Saul.

I think I saw somewhere, doctors offices connected to malls.

It may have been said (partially) in jest, but it has been done; as a matter of fact, we here in Nashville have an older mall (100 Oaks) that was leased out long-term by Vanderbilt University and turned into mixed medical/retail space, with the majority of space serving as a satellite location of Vanderbilt University Medical Center (mostly for doctor’s offices).

He Glock’d his cock, what a shock.

LOL!

And in less funny Florida news, antiscience bill becomes law:

Florida’s House Bill 989, aimed at empowering Floridians to object to the use of specific instructional materials in the public schools, was signed into law by Governor Rick Scott on June 26, 2017, according to the Tampa Bay Times (June 26, 2017). The bill was previously passed by both chambers of the Florida legislature in April and May 2017.

As NCSE previously reported, climate change and evolution were clearly among the targets of HB 989. Supporters of the bill submitted affidavits that complained, “I have witnessed students being taught evolution as fact … rather than theory … I have witnessed children being taught that Global Warming is a reality.”

With the law now in place, any county resident — not just any parent with a child in the country’s public schools, as was the case previously — can now file a complaint about instructional materials in the county’s public schools, and the school will now have to appoint a hearing officer to hear the complaint.

Brandon Haught of Florida Citizens for Science commented on the organization’s blog (June 26, 2017), “This means our fight is only just now beginning. Each and every one of us has to be on alert. You must keep an eye on your local school board and everyone who brings forth a complaint about textbooks. If you don’t, we truly lose.”

Haught also expressed concern that a recently enacted “religious liberties” law — Senate Bill 436 — would be wielded in conjunction with HB 989 to undermine evolution education in Florida, citing a Frontline article (May 8, 2017) that quoted a backer of both bills as vowing to do just that.

When I got out of college, I decided it was enough work to stay in touch with my 6 siblings (w/spouses & kids) and two (divorced) parents, so I wouldn’t try to add folks from HS and college. Then I realized my family is crazy. Oh, well.

Yeah, I don’t talk to people from college either. I was commuting to school everyday (about an hour each way) so I didn’t really hang around the campus that much anyway.

My family is tiny, but I’ll share it with you if you need a sane family.

You get:

My mother, who is a clinical psychologist who decided she’d rather play Irish and French folk music in the airport.
My sister (sorry, she has a wife), who works with a military consulting firm for Hollywood films (they ensure when the military is depicted in films, the depiction is as accurate as possible).
Me. (You poor devil.) My wife: software engineer, public librarian, recovering Libertarian.

When I was a freshman in HS my brother was a senior. He was one of the cool kids in his own way, so even though he didn’t want to acknowledge me, his friends looked out for me. It really was like “Dazed and Confused.” I was extremely insecure, but I got through it with weed-induced aloofness.

Oh, that reminds me when several teachers alleged I was smoking grass (which I wasn’t) and I was taken out of a class and forced to watch a film that had Sonny Bono talking about Marijuana. After I was forced to watch the film, DAMN, I actually wanted to try grass!

Finished the second season of Narcos today. Really well done show. I enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the next season.

Mild spoiler under the cut:

I thought showing the real DEA agents clinking their glasses in a toast in a bar after Escobar’s death was a nice touch, especially since they faded from the real photo from the rooftop shootout to the real agent as he looked now. Very cool way of connecting the dots. between the show and real life.

Up next: Binging through Rick & Morty on Hulu so I can be ready for Season 3. I’ve seen random episodes of the show but I want to watch the whole thing in order before the next season.

Can’t have education. Throughout history, without exception, conservatism has stood in the way of progress and enlightenment.

It will take fights by individuals in local school boards to ward this off, which means people who care about things such as truth over religious inculcation with tax money will have to be politically engaged. If they do not engage in local politics (all politics is local), they will race to the bottom with Mississippi and Texas (and that isn’t far for Florida to go).

Until the Constitution is revised to eliminate the Electoral College, like it or not square miles get votes. While Democrats have to keep an eye on the voters, running up the score in California or Massachusetts does not win elections. Democrats must win square miles.

Wasn’t that long ago President Obama took an electoral vote in my state, and we had a Democratic representative. Then Dems got lazy in 2010, the Tea Party got out the vote everywhere and ran candidates in every place they could, because they understood square miles actually matter.

Honestly who would actually step in a church knowing that a whole bunch of Pulpit Pimps are kissing this liar’s ass every chance they can while reciting the latest Frank Luntz tested GOP talking points?

Speaking of Trump and pulpit pimps, he’s supposed to be joining Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church Dallas, for a “Celebrate Freedom” concert at the Kennedy Center today. The whole thing is completely barftastic to me.

Heh. I first saw it when my father and I were walking through a mall parking lot and he stopped looked down and said “looks like someone dumped their pot” and I ran up and looked. I remember the little round seeds. They stood out, because the rest was all wet and mushed down.

Years later, I was already in college (and it was art school in the 70s so yeah I had seen quite a lot of pot, etc. by then) and I had the chance to ask my dad about that.

it was the perfect set-up. At a family get-together my conservative blockhead brother was going on about pot one day and I knew his kids (my niece and nephew) smoked, so they were cowering and looking down.

To break it up, I asked my dad about that day in the parking lot and I told him I always wondered how he knew it was marijuana. He said he and his brothers (my uncles) smoked it back in the 30s in the bootleg days. I kind of figured that, how else did he know and identify it so quickly?

Shut my brother right up. He was stunned. So were my niece and nephew.

I think a lot of people like my brother think marijuana was discovered in 1966 and was a huge problem that would end the world as they knew it.
