Another Major Embarrassment for Trump: 44 States Have Refused Request for Voter Info

A nationwide “no way”
Politics • Views: 35,392

We just need six more state governments to tell Donald Trump and his “voter fraud” henchman Kris Kobach to go jump in the Gulf of Mexico and it will be a clean sweep: 44 states have refused request for voter information.

Washington, DC (CNN) — Forty-four states have refused the Trump administration’s request for certain voter information, according to a CNN inquiry to all 50 states.

[…]

As of Tuesday afternoon, two states — Florida and Nebraska — are still reviewing the commission’s request. Another two states — Hawaii and New Jersey — have not returned CNN’s request for comment. And while six states are still awaiting a letter from the commission, four of them — New Mexico, Michigan, South Carolina and West Virginia — have already pledged not to provide voters’ private information.

We actually have a presidential administration that’s creating commissions to investigate wholly imaginary conspiracy theories, as a pretext for instituting voter suppression laws.

It’s stunning that the Trump gang thought this ridiculously clumsy power grab was going to work without protest from all sides. The only cause for hope in the midst of the Trump Horror is that these malevolent clowns are so freaking incompetent.

What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July? I answer: A day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless … your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery … a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.

You knew this whole thing was torpedoed when Kobach REFUSED HIS OWN REQUEST.

What more proof do you need that it’s a sham?

Srsly: Kris Kobach is SoS of Kansas (and has made a sideline job of vote-suppression for years): and he didn’t know/forgot the rules of his own state regarding disseminating voter information??

Repost from the dead thread:

Happy 4th of July lizards!

On a less happy note, I just got off the phone with my sister, who informed me that her daughter, who lives and teaches in Japan, turned down several lucrative job offers here in the states due to fears about how she and her fiance (a lovely woman from Ireland) would be treated. My sister had been hoping to have them back in country where she could visit more often. But between fears about increasing hostility against LGBTQ folks and bigotry against people whose skin isn’t lily white and have the “wrong” ancestry (my sister’s husband, a naturalized citizen who was brought to the US from Iran when he was a toddler, gets regular death threats and is now afraid to travel), she decided to stay in Japan for another two years.

What a shame. My niece is fluent is six languages (Farsi, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Chinese and of course English, hence the lucrative job offers) and is a lovely person, compassionate and loving. She was looking forward to being close to family again, but is just too scared to come home because of her dad’s recent experiences.

What is happening to this country? Sigh.

Can I say this with a clear conscience? Given current events I sure hope so. When the Federal government, Executive or legislative moves to take away our rights, that’s when states rights matter. (Insert your state) sovereignty. Maintain the ability to do the good thing. I acknowledge the states rights argument in terms of doing the wrong things.

I submit to you my friends this is a different day. Not for nothin’.

Personally I think Trump’s Cronies were trying to make him feel better by saying there was voter fraud and he got the most votes. The request has backfired. So far no one has given the “special committee” their request. They have been told off by almost every state in the USA.

I would say so too. But of course it’s not just about the committee. It’s being more kind to immigrants or more strict about the environment or worker safety as we choose as states. I’d hate to see a state that requires a higher minimum wage than the federal one told it may not do so. Or have to roll back environmental protections to a shell of an EPA post Trump admin.

Missouri will make sure it isn’t a clean sweep.

The state where minority rights are under assault.
The state where they’re looking to roll back local minimum wage hikes because local control is a thing right up until it looks the GOP in the eye and says let’s go ahead and do something positive for minorities or the poor.

The state where they know that minorities are disproportionately pulled over by law enforcement, and know there’s a problem and yet they still wont prosecute, let alone convict cops who murder people they’ve pulled over.

Well, I don’t know the teacher and whether they were just being a dick or not. But I think it is wrong to simply assume that Thomas Jefferson raped Sally Hemmings, unless you want to believe that all sex is rape.

More fundamental in this case is the privileged male having a mistress. This would not be unusual, and more the case in 18th century for the elite, than rape. Now, I think it is right to point out that the male-mistress relationship is so one-sided in power that we can argue that it is immoral.

I’m not claiming that TJ didn’t rape his slaves, but if one is going to assert anything like that I too would ask for proof. As I would for any historical claim.

Even though it is undoubtedly true that many slave owners raped their slaves, not all of them did. In the case of TJ, I think the more interesting historical question to ask is whether Sally Hemmings started out a slave but ended up as a mistress.

There has been very much written about TJ, Sally Hemmings, all the evidence, etc.

I think it is appropriate for a teacher to ask a student to cite sources for any claim.

FWIW, age 14 was old enough for females, even white females, to be married off in many cultures.

I’m not saying it is right. I think it is wrong.

What I am saying is that when we are going to write about the past we need to cite evidence, then evaluate it in a context that includes the period as well as our own beliefs.

You’re really missing the fundamentals here in a big way. Slaves cannot, by definition, ever consent to their Masters. Children cannot consent, period. Nominally free women whose children’s potential freedom from slavery is being used to coerce them to return to a state of bondage (Hemmings in Paris, being coerced by TJ to return to VA) cannot meaningfully consent. She was his slave and he serially raped her through most of her life, end of story.

That’s not what freetoken is arguing. “Self evident” is not what a teacher should assume in a paper. There is this caveat-

I’m not claiming that TJ didn’t rape his slaves

which I take at face value.

The teacher was being pedantic but that’s not what I’m talking about. When you entertain the idea that Hemmings could have ever become Jefferson’s mistress you’re entertaining the idea that rape isn’t rape. As long as he drew breath he acted like she was his property, even going so far as to threaten her kids’ futures to get her to return from Paris and the nominal legal freedom she had there.

The teacher should’ve simply said “cite your sources to make your essay stronger” instead of implying that the claim was unproven without them.

I mean, the proof is right there. No one contends that she was his slave. If he was asking for the reason the word rape was being used I’d understand, but that sentence suggests to me that his definition of rape is very narrow and that Hemming wanting it would be enough to make it consensual.

With great trepidation I’m agreeing with you. It could be that she was madly in love with him and he with her.

Or it could be that he used his position of power to abuse an adolescent child.

We simply cannot know. The mores of the past cannot be viewed today with any real balance based on what are today’s mores. Was Mohammed a rapist? Was Brigham Young? Was Romeo? Does this make Islam, Mormonism, and Shakespeare illegitimate?

From the modern perspective, the easy answer is “Of course they were!”

But in that time and place, that was just normal.

Yet, because of its sensitivity, I am uncomfortable making this argument, although I still think it is probably correct.

I’ll duck, now. Please use composted manure, not fresh road apples.

This is especially important because we’re presumably talking about a teacher’s approach to a writing assignment. The words you use to convey your point matter, enormously, and if you’re ever going to get your students to absorb that concept you need to demonstrate it via how you write. Reductive criticism like this that doesn’t take into account the seriousness of the subject matter and how the student clearly feels about it is going to hurt more than it helps.

Honestly, I could care about Christie and the beach thing.

At least his kids got to go to the beach.

Sorry, but as a NJ resident who’s been living under this idiot for 8 years, fuck that noise.

Christie basically fucking derailed a budget negotiation that, for once, was going smoothly, mainly because he wanted to raid what is basically a state charity.

He then sits himself and his family on a beach that was closed to people like me, a fucking TAX PAYING CONSTITUENT WHO PAYS HIS SALARY, knowing full well that he’d be caught doing this.

The man had posters blaming the Democrat who stood up to him, and then ordered those posters plastered at state parks and beaches. Most likely with MY TAXES.

So, yeah, I absolutely care. It’s basically a “Fuck you, it’s good to be the king”. And quite frankly, the only reason you don’t care is because it wasn’t your governor doing something so ignorant that a 12 year old would be embarrassed by it.

Hennings was 14 years old and a slave when Jefferson first sexually violated her. That Jefferson was also a prodigious slut doesn’t do anything to mitigate that. He raped her. When BLOTUS was in Europe and the real leaders were walking in the street, he took a golf cart. Two weeks ago, he drove his golf cart on the green, and then stopped to say hello to some people that were videoing it and he sounded like he was out of breath. Today, for the third time (that we know of) he looked like he had no idea where he was. Seriously, there are issues.

If I were the teacher I wouldn’t ask for proof. I’d ask for qualification about the established practice of sexual assault in the master-slave relationship, asking the student to note the extreme likelihood.

That’s not what the teacher requested or Freetoken suggested was necessary.

I’m also curious as to exactly what your are looking for here.

1. Are you asking the student to note that masters sexually assaulted and raped their female slaves all the time, so Jefferson was just being one of the guys?

or

2. Are you suggesting that the student provide evidence to show that slave owners often assaulted their slaves, then note some of the overwhelming evidence that Jefferson had sex with Hennessy and thereby conclude that it’s likely that their relationship was coerced?

Yeah.
Step 1. Make work a requirement for people to receive food stamps
Step 2. Most people on food stamps either (a) can’t work or (b) can’t find a job
Step 3. All those people lose food stamps
Step 4. Claim great success at solving the food stamp problem, when all you’re actually doing is taking away aid from people who need it and creating an actual hunger problem.

Feature, not a bug. The GOP define “success” by how many people have “choice,” so if they’re losing access to basic necessities (food, shelter, healthcare), you promote it as their “choosing” to go without those things because “freedom!!!”

On this, the annual celebration of the Declaration of Independence, let us not forget what it is that truly made this country great: Compassion. We are tough when we need to be, we are strong when we should be, but it is the fact that we are a compassionate people that has made America what it is today. Never let politics, or personality, or the opinions of others stand in the way of being as generous and caring as you possibly can. Celebrate America’s birthday by doing the American thing and reaching out to help.

CNN really fucked up by writing themselves even more into the story and by making it seem like revenge and coercion on their part. They didn’t demand the apology but once it was given in response to their inquiries the worst thing they could do was act like it somehow influenced their journalism.

Either that or like I said hand the story off and essentially recuse themselves from covering the story. Post Gawker they probably couldn’t have guaranteed the name got out but by picking the right outlet they could’ve steered the outcome in that direction while keeping their fingerprints off the release. To be honest, there’s definitely a handful of people here that I don’t consider friends at all. And I stand by what I said. If all is truly lost, there’s options for exit.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve had my share of misunderstandings about what the 1st Amendment does and doesn’t cover, particularly the whole “it only protects you from the government” angle.

That said, unlike Alex, I actually educated myself.

The key phrase here is “He (Milo) says…”.

As in “Milo can say whatever the fuck he wants, the odds are good that he’s either lying about the numbers or fudging the truth.”

This guy is the type of jerk I’ve seen so many times on the Internet. He made a stupid comment, wouldn’t back down, spewed a bunch of non sequitur bullshit, then declared victory. Tedious as hell.

I’d take this shit more seriously from “moderate” Republicans if I knew that they actually put country before party and voted for Clinton.

Sen. Susan Collins says she was thanked over and over again for opposing GOP health bill at today’s parade.

Now let’s see if she holds to that on the second go-through with the bill. (“But now it only deprives 21 million of their insurance, so it’s okay.”)

Bingo.

I’ve been taking TPM’s Josh Marshall’s law about moderate Republicans standing their ground against Trumpcare to heart: they all cave in the end. Any objection is merely theater.

Right. Not new and should’ve been covered more by the NYT.
And we know what the deal is with them doing this stuff. Their supporters do too and love it.

Just because….

I have been in love with Judith Durham for over 50 years, a naturally beautiful woman with the voice of an angel. Here she is with the other Seekers (Athol Guy, Keith Potger, and Bruce Woodley) in 1966. All 4 are still with us, the heavens be thanked. Btw the high note at 2:38 is an F# above high C, and Judith nails it perfectly.

Love the Seekers - hold the record for the highest number of concert goers in the Southern Hemisphere for their 1967 Melbourne concert.

To be fair, I’m sure lots of presidents have mistaken the limo at the bottom of Air Force One’s stairs for something other than a limo at the bottom of the stairs of Air Force One.
