re: #4 teleskiguy

Saw your comments on defeatism in the previous thread. I am not quite that stern but that is a matter of style rather than substance. There seem to be people who thrive on thinking that is all is lost and all resistance is futile. It is really not even pathetic, it is just annoying, as though the whining notes of weakness and resignation appeal to them.
We are not beaten: We have not really even been tested compared with our historical antecedents. There are no concentration camps, no roving gangs of regime thugs, and if there were, many of us would be able to deal decisively with them. People who loved freedom and valued reason have overcome much, much worse.
The forces of ignorance, greed, and superstition are in the ascendant just now, but they cannot stay there. History and most of the rest of the world are on our side. I think at some level even the dimmest RWNJs know this and perceive that it is they, rather than the targets of their wrath, who are doomed. This explains their increasing desperation and hysteria.

You said it more eloquently than I could at the moment. Thank you.

In all honesty it was said in jest, but I still feel that we should be as far away from defeatism and hopelessness as possible at this point, and if you’re at that point of total despair right now, well, I can’t help you.

So, the Royal Society puts up a video about “fake news”, a little get together as part of their science communication effort:

Fake news, filter bubbles and echo chambers

To me, the real problem is that those who need this discussion the most are those least likely to care, and least likely to think about these things deeply.

Therein lay the real problem of the 21st century and our technological marvels - all the toys in the world just lead to people doing the same old shit, just more efficiently.

If someone doesn’t like a bit of data, some fact, some report, they can and will simply dismiss it.

I really hate it when people use public streets to launch large fireworks (well, I hate large fireworks in general but I don’t think I am going to get my neighbours to stop shooting them).

I went up to our water tower to do the second chlorine-free water test (YAY it passes … tomorrow we do the coliform test and take that to the lab).

When I came home I turned the corner on the street I live on and there were two burning mortars in the middle of the street I almost ran over - quick dodge both to avoid them and then the launch.

While typing this, someone just set off such a large mortar it set off half the car alarms in town.

Well, I have one small good thing to report tonight. I spent the evening with some good friends, and like good reticent folks, we have talked about many things over the years, but never politics. I was not sure where they stood, and wondered a bit about the husbands. Well, we finished eating, and one of the husbands said “Tr**p!” And we were off. Everyone around the table took turns saying what they thought of him and his, and what was happening to our country, and if we had seen that video of him wandering around looking for his limo, it would have been more grist for the mill. We’re in Illinois, and we all agreed that Rauner could join him wherever we could send the two of them. (And it looks like our legislature may actually pass budget over his veto. We may start the digging out process, from two years without a budget,)

Since I am the flag guy in my town, I monitor the White House and state government proclamation pages for changes in flag status, &c.

Independence Day is one of the days in the US Code that the President is directed to issue a nationwide proclamation.

whitehouse.gov

Unsurprisingly, there is no proclamation for Independence Day. (The last was about a week ago about tariffs.) Too busy golfing I guess, and staff too incompetent to remember they are supposed to do that.

While state governors are not required to issue proclamations, they usually do. Considering this is my state’s 150th anniversary (and July 4 was the day the state’s star went on the flag), I would have thought my state governor would have issued a proclamation for Independence Day. Nope.

Talk about fake news…
Of course it would be from a Murdoch owned media outlet

“…Newsagents should refuse to sell Wednesday’s Daily Telegraph - which has a fictional front page featuring a Bill Shorten-led government - because it is pure political propaganda, according to the Australian Newsagency Blog…”

“…The Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid dated Wednesday’s page one 5 July 2019 and showed the Labor leader celebrating his “first 100 days” in power, a terrible period with “workers laid off, record tax rates, rents hit new high”.

Written by the paper’s national political editor, Sharri Markson, the article attempts to portray a dystopia under Labor including a $17bn injection for the Gonski funding package and marriage equality law passed - policies many would see as positive.

“A chuffed Bill Shorten celebrated his first 100 days in power yesterday, marking the milestone with a rousing party at ACTU headquarters,” Markson wrote…”

(CNN) — It’s perfectly reasonable to see a bug and feel the need to wipe it off the face of the earth with hellfire.

Actually setting a fire, though, is usually not part of the plan.

Mike Tingley from Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, presumably didn’t intend to burn his stand-alone garage to the ground Monday night.

He just wanted to clear out some wasps, Grand Blanc Fire Chief Robert Burdette told CNN affiliate WEYI.

His solution? Set off a smoke bomb inside the structure.

It didn’t go well.

Soon after his DIY extermination attempt, a neighbor noticed flames coming out of the garage. By the time firefighters arrived, the building was completely engulfed.

Adding insult to injury, video of the fire shows fireworks going off amidst the blaze. As the flames spread, the fireworks, which were stored in the garage, started to explode in a decidedly un-festive display.

Grand Blanc fire crews called in two other departments to help tame the inferno, but the garage was obliterated. By some fortune, the main house was mostly unharmed. Neither Burdette nor Tingley could be reached for comment.

Luckily, no one was injured. Except, we assume, the wasps.

One for our friends here from Colorado:

Dozens in Colorado Accused of Trafficking Pot Outside State (goes to the Scottsbluff, NE Star-Herald), more at the link:

A mammoth marijuana trafficking ring that pretended to be growing weed for sick people was instead illegally shipping the drug to a half-dozen other states and bilking investors, including former NFL players, Colorado officials announced Wednesday.

A Denver grand jury indicted 62 people and 12 businesses in the case that involved federal and state agents executing nearly 150 search warrants at 33 homes and 18 warehouses and storage units in the Denver area.

“The black market for marijuana has not gone away since recreational marijuana was legalized in our state, and in fact continues to flourish,” state Attorney General Cynthia Coffman said in a statement.

The indictment targets the largest illegal marijuana operation discovered since Colorado legalized recreational pot in 2012, Coffman said.

Closer to home, the governor has dismissed the head of the Nebraska State Patrol, and turned over investigative information to the US Attorney’s Office and the FBI.

starherald.com

This comes after a couple high-speed chases (one recent and near my home) where the State Patrol allegedly lied and shifted stories when information or video came out, to cover themselves after those suspects were killed.

Several other officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the governor’s investigation commission into the incidents.

[Brad] Rice, appointed to lead the agency by [Gov. Pete] Ricketts [R] in 2015, will not receive a severance package, and his termination is effective immediately. The governor met with Rice in person Friday morning and he said the colonel reacted to the decision “professionally.”

Well, there is that. I’m not sure of the statistics in this state of whites running away from the cops in excess of 100 mph versus other groups. Also, outside the large cities here, aside from Native Americans, minorities are a really small group of people.

Per capita we do have the largest percentage of refugees of any state in the Union, but that is still a pretty small number.

Wonkette’s open thread has a recipe for homemade corndogs (and in the process they skewer everyone’s sacred cows with their corndogs), the cocktail drink the sidecar, and pot brownies (that recipe is a hoot).

Golden line from the article on the corndog recipe:

There are eight hot dogs per package — one for each of your fingers, so you can hang on by your thumbs.

Ha! My Illinois friends would give us an earful about Rodney Davis, too.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump’s already up and railing about trade deals. He knows what to do. Spew empty platitudes and deflect when anyone asks what in particular is wrong.

This is all Trump has ever done. He doesn’t know or care about specifics. He knows people respond to trade deals are bad, because they link trade deals to loss of jobs, even though the loss of jobs is far more complicated than 140 characters (or Trump’s brain) can comprehend or include.

Automation. Technological improvements. Obsolescence. Lower costs elsewhere. Greedy business owners who put personal profits over wellbeing of workers (here’s one Trump and his spawn are innately familiar with).

Trump loves to talk about bringing jobs back, and yet he’s done nothing of the sort about the jobs he or his family had control over. Why? Simple - it would cut his bottom line.

However, the statement was made by China, and in April.

Amid sharply rising tensions over North Korea’s nuclear arms program, China said on Thursday that its trade with the country had expanded, even though it had complied with United Nations sanctions and stopped buying North Korean coal, a major source of hard currency for Pyongyang.

China released the first-quarter trade data just days after President Trump urged its leader, Xi Jinping, to clamp down on trade with North Korea. The two leaders met at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last week.

Good morning all,
Happy 4th! The bang-bangs stopped here around 1 AM in northern Colorado. My two rescue dogs and cat were not pleased (1st July 4th at our new house). Called the cops, and a few in the neighborhood likely got the $1000 fine for shooting fireworks that leave the ground in the city.

On the plus side my wife and I listened to the police chatter and and were slightly entertained by craziness that is a mix of alcohol and explosives.

Also all these explosives are great when your area hasn’t had substantial rain in a month/

Good Morning.

So, Trump’s Great Negotiating Skills™ have been on display on foreign matters like the relationship between the U.S., China and North Korea and also the Israel and Palestinian constant search for peace in the region. What have the results been.

China and N. Korea - Hey we tried.

Israel and Palestine - Here is what Bibi wants take it or leave it Palestinians.

Wow. Trump is so good as this. And the world laughs. How much of a fool is he going to make of himself this week? Putin is going to eat him alive…but Trump won’t know it because vast amounts of smoke will be blowing up his ass.

Wingnuts call for a boycott of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, for allegedly pressing the “gay agenda” (see that gay steamroller cartoon).

theregister.co.uk

Few could argue with what the Raspberry Pi has achieved. As well as inspiring countless youngsters into computing, the tiny affordable gadget is beloved by amateur and professional techies alike.

Yet a completely batshit crazy petition, even by change.org standards, begs to differ. One “NoRottenPi” is calling for a boycott of the charity on the grounds it apparently promotes “a gay agenda”. The issue appears to be a small rainbow featured on the website.

“I do not believe it is appropriate to use an educational product as a vehicle to promote Gay, Lesbian, and transgender causes to our children,” shrieks the call to arms.

Not only that, but apparently the foundation is “opposing anything that supports a hetrosexual [sic] lifestyle”.

From WHYY’s news site Newsworks Philly’s July 4th.
newsworks.org

In my neighborhood as a matter of fact across the street from my house one of my neighbors was setting off some of those loud firecrackers. He kept it up until about 10:30pm. Then another neighbor took over and that went on until 11:30pm. I had a very noisy 4th.

Auschwitz Criticizes Louisiana Congressman For Making a Video Inside a Gas Chamber: ‘It’s Not a Stage’

A Louisiana Congressman is being roundly criticized by the Auschwitz Memorial for shooting his own little Ken Burns-meets-campaign-ad video inside one of the gas chambers there. Congressman Clay Higgins, who recently wrote that “all of Christendom… is at war with Islamic horror,” managed to use his visit to the former death camps into an ad for giving the U.S. military more money.

Visitors are not meant to film—or talk—at Auschwitz as a sign of respect, but Higgins, who serves on the House Homeland Security Committee, did both, shooting an iPhone dispatch where he mused about human atrocities over the sound of mournful violins.

God, Guns and the Gospel? How One Church Puts It All Together

Bring up guns and the Second Amendment in a crowd and sparks are sure to fly. And what if the church gets brought up in the conversation?

That’s definitely happening around this small Alabama town where one church believes God and guns can go together.

In fact, the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church has built its own gun range out back.

Grandmother and Glock owner Charlotte Powell said the congregation had to build something.

“Our church had this huge hole in the back,” she said.

There are actually getting to be quite a few of these “gun churches” in this part of the country.

The last line in the article there is an apology from someone who was outraged at NPR:

“I took NPR out of context and had a stupid moment,” wrote D.G. Davies, who had accused the network of condoning violence. “Never underestimate one’s capacity to learn. Sometimes it’s painful. But it’s valuable above pride.”

Some people can admit when they are wrong, and should be encouraged for doing so.

Our town’s gun shop is in a former Catholic Church. (The church closed many years before we moved here.)

Right after we moved in, I commented on it being the “Church of the NRA” (it still has stained-glass windows, Latin crosses in wrought iron around the outside of the building, &c.) Many of the people here now refer to it by that name instead of the business’s correct name.

She was literally explaining her plan in detail when the GOP nominee leaned over his mic & said ISN’T SHE A NASTY WOMAN!

She was giving speeches on how to improve employment opportunities for the handicapped and the news networks were showing us an empty podium waiting for DT to come and explain his charitable contributions.

The only time we heard her quoted was to respond to DT attacks against her, whereupon they remarked what an evil, negative campaigner she was.

Still, we let this happen.

I saw earlier someone (anymouser) posted Volvo announced it will no longer manufacture gasoline engine cars.

Wrong.

They will be making all electric AND hybrid powered cars.

Maybe mouse doesn’t know about hybrids…they use a smaller gas engine to help generate the power for the batteries to keep the car powered. You don’t have to plug them in, they need gas to start the engine and then that generates the power for the car to operate. Also, there are several different designs.

As many know, I am an auto racing fan (sports car racing mainly - road course racing, not much oval). The modern Formula One car is hybrid and they are now setting new track records beating the former hi-revving V10 engines of the past regulations.

The engines in them are small V6 - 1.6 liter single turbo engines that make around 500 horsepower. In addition, just about anything spinning in the car (the turbo, the drive line and the brake rotors) all are used as generators to build up and store electric energy in onboard batteries that power additional direct drive units on the rear drive shafts. When added to the gas engine, the cars are around 1,100 horsepower. No one knows for sure, because the race engine makers (Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari and Honda) don’t like to give out their figures.

The torque ratings of the cars are off the clock. Torque out of the turns is higher than ever and that makes the cars faster than previous forms of Formula One cars. Thus, faster overall lap times.

Do not sell hybrid cars short on performance. Once the racing tech gets into the auto manufacturers expect to see some very fast hybrid sport cars and sport sedans.

And if they ever get biofuels in production we can still have “gas” engines in hybrid cars and have performance and cleaner environment.

Hybrids have the advantage that the engine runs at a constant speed and can thus be tuned to achieve optimal fuel efficiency.

“Life in Lubbock, Texas taught me two things: One is that God loves you and you’re going to burn in hell. The other is that sex is the most awful, filthy thing on earth, and you should save it for someone you love.”

― Butch Hancock

Butch Hancock

Butch Hancock (born July 12, 1945 in Lubbock, Texas), is a country/folk music recording artist and songwriter. Hancock is a member of The Flatlanders along with Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, but he has principally performed solo.
Butch Hancock has been called “one of the finest songwriters of our time” and is acknowledged by his peers as one of the premier Texas singer-songwriters. His lyrics are ingenious, excelling in metaphor and irony and displaying a world-weary trait, just as he is a master of seeing the miracle in the ordinary. His lyric style has often been compared[citation needed] with that of Bob Dylan, and his songs have been sung by the likes of Emmylou Harris.

INTERPOL has removed Turkey from its database after the Turks uploaded some 60,000 names of wanted “terrorists”.

Interpol has removed Turkey from its database after Ankara uploaded a list of 60,000 people sought over suspected links to what Turkish prosecutors call the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), daily Karar has reported.

The decision to suspend Turkey’s access to the database of sought individuals came after the July 2016 coup attempt.

According to the daily, Turkey uploaded the names of suspected members of FETÖ, widely believed to have been behind the thwarted coup, after they fled abroad.

Interpol allegedly said the issue constituted “an issue of trust.”

Access to the database has reportedly been blocked for almost a year despite protests from Turkey, which says it makes it easier for the followers of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen to travel around Europe and the United States.

This GOP “voter integrity project” seems awfully suspicious in light of a number of other factors (besides Trump’s stupid assertion that millions voted illegally for Hillary Clinton - and if you add in the votes for Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, and other candidates, he lost by twenty million or so):

NH and NY safe state districts flipping to Dems
Kansas, Georgia, South Carolina special elections a lot closer than they normally would be
Orange County, Calif. going for Hillary Clinton (the last time a Democrat took that county was in 1936 - FDR’s second term)

If they had good ideas (or at least could sell bad ones), they would do that. All that’s left is trying to overthrow democratic elections.

Hybrids are awesome.

That’s my position too. I drive 120 miles a day for my commute so EVs really don’t make a lot of sense. I was looking at a hybrid for better gas mileage but I did the math and given gas prices are still pretty low, the improved gas mileage wouldn’t make up for the cost of the car. But if my current car dies (V6 Ford Mustang with 120,000 miles), I would probably get a hybrid.

In the tiniest of tiny backwater redneck Montana towns, there is a 4th of July parade for four blocks (and back). All the festivities follow, including chicken poop bingo, turtle races, a barbeque, and then a surprisingly fine fireworks show late at night. It’s safe, it’s fun, it’s predictable, it’s Americana. Where better for my liberal friend to unleash her biting political humor?

Finding the women’s bathroom in the bar occupied, and in a bit of a desperate state, she stepped into the men’s bathroom. As she tells it, she had looked around and seen no one near it, and the bar was only minimally occupied, so she figured she could slip in and out unnoticed.

However, the moment her pants were down (her words), someone tried the door, so she knew a man had to be waiting outside. As she washed her hands, she had time to consider her exit strategy, and it was a doozy.

She confidently opened the door and stepped out, and as she smiled and waved to the next gentleman, she said cheerily, “I had to go with what was on my birth certificate!” He ducked his head and ran.

I am in awe. With this line now at the ready, I am inspired to use the opposite sex’s bathroom from now on at every opportunity.

Could CNN sue him for his use of their symbol—copyright something something? (Not asking if it would be wise to sue everyone who uses your company’s symbol). Thought there might be some liability issue here for the video-maker.

But it occurs to me that if someone on the Intertubes used the logo of Trump Industries or whatever it’s called, DJT and sons would make noise about suing such a person.

Parody is fair use.

Doubt it, it was used as satire, people get pretty wide berth on those things. If they tried, to me that would be pretty much the definition of a SLAPP suit. As long as he wasn’t using it in a commercial way anyhow.

Yeah - like that case with Jerry Falwell, where he tried to sue Larry Flynt over a satirical pseudo-advertisement that appeared in Hustler back in the day. A unanimous SCOTUS decision in that one.

The Older Boy was homeschooled, because we and the school system couldn’t figure out what a classroom for him would look like. The District admitted they didn’t have anything that would really fit him.

His Girlfriend was also homeschooled, because her parents are the ‘angry Christian conservative’ sort. Her exposure to popular culture was very limited.

This means that she’s often been at a disadvantage in conversations with our family, because we tend to speak in lines from movies, Monty Python, etc.

Poor thing. She gets a blank look, and when we say, “It’s from Blazing Saddles”, she says, “I’ve never seen it.”

I’m gonna proffer a dissenting opinion here, and say that I can understand CNN’s logic in taking the “high road” here. Though IMO, there’s not much of a “high road” in this tawdry affair, just a “low road” vs. “outright swamp” (or “cesspool”). HAS is probably going to get outed sooner or later: CNN - with reputation as a real journalism entity to uphold (the Trumperrhoids’ gibberings notwithstanding) - is going to look better - at least to the reality-based universe - if they keep up a facade of “ethical” behavior, and let the outing get done by someone else. The wingnuts, of course, are going to keep up with their BS: but once these affairs get out into the real world, CNN - unlike creatures like Jack Posobiec, etc.; are going to find an advantage in looking “professional”.

You’re quite right about Internet anonymity, though… it’s not an easy issue.

CBS will offer some lame excuse about the two being supporting characters and should not receive as much pay as the two leads. I’ve seen the show a few times (mostly to watch Grace Park, tbh) and it seems the two leads get more screentime than Park and Kim do. Whether that’s by design (the plot) or innate racism on the part of the showrunners I could not say, but both Kim and Park have parts that are integral to the show. So, IMO, they should be getting pretty close to the same pay as Caan and the other guy.

re: #384 Birth Control Works

I stayed off the interwebs yesterday for the most part, buried myself in photoshop.

I didn’t stay off the innertubes, but I did spend a fair amount of time on apolitical content. Back in 1971, my Mom and Dad took a 1 month trip to Europe, primarily France and Spain. My Dad did one of those deals where you pick up a European car at the factory, drive it around on your vacation, then have it shipped back and pay lower duties since it’s a ‘used car’ (don’t know if that still happens). The car he chose? A Citroen DS21 Pallas.

You know, one of these…

He brought it back and drove it till it no longer passed PA inspection (they rust like crazy). He traded it in for one that was only one year newer, but came from the South. And he drove THAT until it no longer passed PA inspections. Then he parked it in his garage, dreaming of restoring it one day, or selling it to somebody for parts (at any given time since 1964, Dad has had at least one dead car in one of the garages).

The Cit has sat for probably 20 years, neither restored, nor sold to somebody for parts.

Then I happened upon a mention of an annual meeting of Citroen enthusiasts, only 20 miles from where Dad lives. Back when he still had all his marbles, he’d have enjoyed that. But this led me to looking into what people do to restore old Cits. Apparently, a fair number of people spend a lot of money doing it! A lot of money, since as I say, they rust like motherfuckers. So, people spend tens of thousands having them stripped to the bare metal, all rusted metal replaced, and some folks have even had the resulting entire chassis galvanized! There are entire businesses devoted to restoring the old Citroen DS.

All of them in Europe.

So, no help for Dad’s car. But it was fun looking.

A mere 42 days after announcing its first case of Ebola since the devastating West African epidemic of 2014-2016, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has won a skirmish with the deadly virus. And I’m sure there are some wingnuts out there on the Great Anonymous Internet pissing and moaning about this, as it will rob them of an opportunity to exploit anti-immigrant or anti-government or anti-Obama (might as well throw him in there) sentiments using a health crisis as an excuse. And reminders of how the last eruption of Ebola hysteria turned out to be so overblown will, of course, be conveniently forgotten….

It’s a cool-looking car, no doubt about it, but yeah they’re total rustbuckets. Which is a shame really; I’d love to own one.

When I was in Spain in the Nineties, I bought a Citroen GS (1977 model) that had over 200,000 km on it and looked like it was rolled down a mountain, pushed back up, then rolled down it again. I drove that car all over Western Europe.

(I might have considered bringing it back if there was any way to maintain it here.)

Voting tomorrow to overturn veto —final.

I’ve always wondered how much one of those professional ‘Frame Off’ restorations cost. There’s a show on Velocity that does nothing but old Chrysler Corp. muscle cars, even from rusty hulks, restoring them to factory spec - or what factory spec would have been if everyone in the factory had been obsessed with doing the best possible job (hint - they weren’t).

I learned the average high-quality ‘Frame Off’ resto runs about $50,000.

The beauty of car restorations these days is parts availability. You be surprised at the quality of the parts, many made better and of better materials than the originals thanks to CNC machines and other newer processes.

And if it is a real popular classic, you can almost build a new one from the ground up in new parts.

People like these restoration parts companies…one for some American cars and one for restoring British sports cars.

Cillizza explains why Mitch McConnell pushed so hard for a vote on the deathcare bill before July 4, using examples of Senators Rand Paul and Susan Collins.

In short, he presumes the bill is on life support (and not likely covered by the ACA).

The same problem the House had with their version: Every time you give a bone to the wingnuts, you lose the slightly-less wingnutty. Go the other way, you lose the wingnuts.

Combine that with all the GOP people hiding from town halls over Independence Day, and you have a bill that no Republican wants to be associated with and can’t be reconciled.

LINCOLN — A nonpartisan group that advocates on election issues is raising concerns about a federal commission’s request for voter information.

Nebraskans for Civic Reform called into question the information that can be provided under Nebraska law and how the data might be used.

The Lincoln-based group also questioned the role of a key member of President Donald Trump’s voting commission, which is tasked with investigating allegations of voter fraud.

In a letter sent Monday, Nebraskans for Civic Reform and the ACLU of Nebraska urged Secretary of State John Gale to reject the commission’s request to “protect the integrity of our voting records and the personal privacy of countless Nebraska citizens.”

Gale has not made a decision on the commission’s request, said spokeswoman Laura Strimple.

A spokesman for Gov. Pete Ricketts said the Governor’s Office has been in touch with Gale’s office. Taylor Gage noted that Ricketts had not received communication from Trump’s administration on the matter.

re: #396 Blind Frog Belly White

I didn’t stay off the innertubes, but I did spend a fair amount of time on apolitical content. Back in 1971, my Mom and Dad took a 1 month trip to Europe, primarily France and Spain. My Dad did one of those deals where you pick up a European car at the factory, drive it around on your vacation, then have it shipped back and pay lower duties since it’s a ‘used car’ (don’t know if that still happens). The car he chose? A Citroen DS21 Pallas.

You know, one of these…

[Embedded content]

There are other Cit owners clubs in the States and Canada. Jay Leno has a DS21 and I think he mentioned some resources when he did a video on his.

Anyway, if you still have the car, it wouldn’t hurt to advertise it online if you want to sell it.

We (my 5 siblings and I) were discussing this very thing. The problem is, it’s still in Dad’s garage. He might never notice that it’s gone, but he’d probably notice a bunch of guys with a flatbed truck in his driveway.

Apparently a few years back, my sister had nearly talked him into selling it, and a guy showed up to check it out, and got all excited.

That got Dad all excited about getting it going again, and he wouldn’t let her sell it. But then he didn’t follow up on getting it fixed, either.

Most sane nations might see a build-up on their border as an act of aggression in itself and make noises about how it could lead to a war.

North Korea’s so paranoid that a build-up on their border would be interpreted as a declaration of war.

The only thing wrong with the Healthcare system is that the GOP is fucking with it.

In their mind, what is wrong is Women’s Health Care —it’s expensive —easier for whores and bad girls to die.

If they are virtuous, they wouldn’t need healthcare.

Pregnancies and childbirth would just be perfect —like magic, unicorns and lollipops —romance novels —all is natural as God intended.

How dumb do you have to be, to ask the woman who had a plan for EVERYTHING, “Where’s your plan?”

I mean, seriously - who runs the GOP’s Twitter account? One of the Moron Twins?

Actually I did downding you, because it sounded like you were telling people to kill themselves, which not OK with me. Sorry if I misunderstood.

I read it the same way.
I didn’t downding, I just took that as a hint to go do something else for the rest of the night that didn’t involve reading that kind of “advice” on LGF.

But I think internet anonymity actually is a very simple issue. You can be anonymous on the internet, and for most decent human beings that’s no problem. But when someone crosses the red line into spreading hate speech or racism, or uses their anonymity to harass people and avoid consequences, they no longer have any right to expect their anonymity will be protected.

IMHO Those of us that still have anonymity have it for the purpose of different, loud or controversial points. For entertainment or education. So long as it’s not threats of violence of hate speech by a reasonable measure. Like on the street. Anonymous only until you break the law.

OT regarding the Trump “sundowning” comments posted earlier:

I’ve watched all 3 of the wandering videos several times today. In each one, Trump is wearing the same expression on his face. When my mom had multiple brain tumors, she had a similar facial expression — very flat affect. It seems like he is behaving the same way she did, sort of on “auto pilot” and just going through the motions.

Not saying he has brain tumors, just making an anecdotal observation about possible cognitive impairment based on my limited experience.

There’s actually a Citroen specialist near Dad’s place, the one who organizes ‘Citroens In Carlisle’. He might even be the guy who was interested in buying Dad’s car.

His shop, appropriately enough, is in Mechanicsburg.

I saw a few years back that some company in the UK were selling MGB ‘Body in White’, which as I understand it would pretty much allow you to build a new one from spare parts. It’s one of those things you can do if you have too much money.

You can also buy a DeLorean built from “new old stock” parts as well, at least as recently as a couple of years ago.

So worth the time. Some of it won’t seem immediately helpful, like the domestic dispute chapter if you are single. There is a lot on what celebrities face. That’s the chapter that teaches me there is almost always warning of a killer. How to walk that out into criminal and gun policy is a tough job. But one that needs doing.
