Coming to a conservative North American theocracy near you:

El Salvador Teen Rape Victim Sentenced to Thirty Year Prison Sentence after Stillbirth (Goes to The Guardian) more at the link:

A teenage rape victim in El Salvador has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for murder after having a stillbirth, the latest in a long line of failures of justice against pregnant women in the Central American country.

Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz, 19, from a small rural community in Cuscatlán, eastern El Salvador, was convicted on the grounds that failing to seek antenatal care amounted to murder.

Hernandez, a high school student, gave birth into the toilet in April 2016 after falling ill with acute back and stomach pain.

Hernandez, who at the time was 18, was in her third trimester, but hadn’t realised that she was pregnant. She had been repeatedly raped by a gang member over several months as part of a forced sexual relationship.

So my local “serious” conservative finally dug himself out of whatever hole he’s been hiding in for days to grace me with an editorial from The Gray Lady by the walking political tumor that is Mark Penn. What did Mr. Penn have to tell the DNC? If they want to win going forward, they have to become GOP-lite. Abandon all that “socialism” like higher pay and a public option, stop being “politically correct,” and fully embrace all that policies that the GOP considered “moderate”….20 years ago.

Time-Warner, owners of CNN, are in a complex relationship with Trump. Mostly though the corporate board knows that having Trump as an ally will help them more than hurt them.

Herein lay the problem for contemporary journalism: when the definition of success is the making of money, truth carries little currency.

As I get older I am becoming more skeptical (and cynical) about what I may have previously assumed to be true.

Among that was the hidden belief that “journalism” comes from a long line of objective truth seekers.

Now, as I look through newspapers of old, and listen to what was recorded in the early days of radio, and then TV, I’m concluding that I was naive about what the “news” really was.

This gets back to our discussions of history and the knottiness of most questions about the past (e.g., the “historical Jesus”.)

I’m sure there are individuals working as, and self-labeling as, “journalists” who are earnestly seeking what they believe is the truth.

Yet, the outlets that channel the work of thousands of people, churning out “news”, may have little in common with the scattered few here and there.

I know there are non-profits attempting to push a higher quality of journalism - ProPublica, for example - or academics who want to aspire to some objective evaluation of journalism - the CJR, for example - but I am cynical enough to believe that these are mere drops in an ocean of human activity that exists primarily for entertainment.

And by “entertainment” I mean that by which we can divert attention away from the realities of life.

Charles Pierce described Penn this way:

If this guy gets within 10 city blocks of your campaign headquarters, call the local hazardous waste unit immediately. Call the guys who pull pythons out of the plumbing in Florida. Call the River Monsters dude. Anything to keep this walking pile of terrible advice at a safe distance. Mark Penn’s counsel should never be taken internally.

re: #18 Amory Blaine

So much of what is popularly considered “history” is but the only surviving opinions of a person at a particular time and place.

We’re lucky in that the rise of newspapers in the 18th century left us with some direct records of the lives and works of ordinary (or more than ordinary, in the person you reference) people.

Get much before that time though and what survives really drops off to near zero.

Even in the 19th century in great parts of this continent there was a dearth of writing and recording of local and personal matters. As anyone who has tried to do genealogy in America before 1850 can attest, many women just seem to pop out of nowhere, with only their married names.

“…A passenger assaulted a flight attendant in the Boeing 767’s first class cabin about 45 minutes after the Beijing-bound flight departed, the spokesperson said, adding that there was no information to suggest that it was a national security threat. The FBI also said the incident did not appear to be such a threat.

And contrary to some reports, there is no information to suggest anyone attempted to breach the cockpit, both the airport and Delta said.

Several passengers tried to subdue the individual, and two people — a passenger and a flight attendant — were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries in connection with the incident…”

Paul Ryan, doing yeoman’s work at a “Town Hall”.

Speaker Paul Ryan calls North Korea ‘No. 1’ foreign policy concern

Ryan Thursday visited a pair of companies in Oak Creek and Racine.

During his Oak Creek stop at WPC Technologies, a company that manufactures pigments for noncorrosive paints used on airplanes and buildings, Ryan toured the facility and took mostly presubmitted questions from workers.

He did not take questions from reporters Thursday.

He is so brave. Maybe he can face Kim Jong Un with a list of prescreened questions.

We still carry on under the illusion that we are the “customers” and that news programming is the “product”, the things whose job it was to create.

Wrong.

Their product is advertising time. To make it more attractive to potential buyers, they need to attract viewers/readers/listeners. Programming, be it news, entertainment or otherwise, is just window dressing to increase the market value of their product.

I’ve been rereading What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848 and the sections on Andrew Jackson are just scary. Here’s a portion on Jackson’s truthfulness:

Whether the president really believed in Margaret Eaton’s sexual fidelity is doubtful and not even altogether relevant. He insisted that her case paralleled that of his late wife. Yet he would have known his protestations of Rachel’s innocence of adultery to be untrue. For Jackson, such matters were issues not of fact but of his authority. Jackson demanded loyalty, and to him this meant acceptance of his assertions, whether he was insisting on Peggy Eaton’s chastity or (as he did in the course of another tirade) that Alexander Hamilton “was not in favor of the Bank of the United States.”31 In the same spirit of privileging his will over truth, Jackson claimed in 1831 that he had received a message from President Monroe through John Rhea (pronounced “Ray”) authorizing his conduct in the invasion of Florida. Historians working over a period of half a century have carefully proved the story a complete fabrication. Nevertheless, Old Hickory persuaded John Rhea to vouch for its truth!32 After all, Jackson had prevailed upon his friends to endorse the story of his 1791 marriage to Rachel in Natchez. And in 1829-30, with no issue save Indian Removal yet defining the administration’s position, personal loyalty to the president meant everything. (italics in original)

“rereading”?

That’s mighty ambitious.

Something to do on my lunch break. :)

One reason I wanted to reread was because of the time spent on Andrew Jackson in the book and Trump’s love for Jackson.

re: #80 Timothy Watson

I’ve been rereading What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848 and the sections on Andrew Jackson are just scary. Here’s a portion on Jackson’s truthfulness:

On your advice I picked it up from the library. I also commented on that a couple of days ago. The parallels are crazy (except that Jackson was a war “hero.” Also learned that other things we’d learned in high school were BS, such as that crowds of common people came to the White House to celebrate the president of the people (when in fact it was crowds of sycophants and insiders looking for jobs and favors). Thanks for the rec. Very informative.

As a kid, I always thought Jackson was a great hero based on watching the movie with Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner about the Battle of New Orleans. The historical figure is another matter entirely…

So, basically we’ve got a Trump with massive personal interest in good relations with Russia and the man who was trying to work out a $500B energy deal as boss of Exxon-Mobil when sanctions were put in place meeting with the guy who holds the keys. Boy, I bet they sure give Putin a “tongue lashingbathing.”

93
lawhawk  Jul 7, 2017 • 6:04:59am

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Two related issues. First:

Then the far more important and consequential one:

Trump’s trying to psych himself up for his meeting with Putin. He’s already shown he wont engage in his bullying handshake bullshit with Putin, which shows who’s the dominant and submissive one in this relationship.

That compares poorly with this:

That’s how you deal with Putin. Trump’s busy putting on a show all while he’s slipping Putin all that Putin wants under the table (heck, he’s not even being that subtle about it).

Confirmation the Republicans never had a replacement and never considered one. Great planning there GOP.

It also proves all those attempts to repeal the ACA in the past were nothing but show. Obviously they never expected any of them to work so they never had any legislation in the works.

And they still get paid for being do-nothings all that time. With benefits…like healthcare.

I just love all the out-of-staters who have become Illinois experts overnight. They are the same people who believe a flat tax is the way to go. Well. Illinois is absolute proof a flat income tax does NOT work.

People threatening to move to “KY/IA/ID” etc.? Well, they are in for a big surprise as taxes there for their income brackets are actually higher. Not to mention home/auto/life.

We’ve gone 2 years under Rauner without paying our bills. So many fellow residents would have preferred junk status for the state instead of a 4.95% flat income tax. Suddenly it dawns on them that 4.95% of a $30k income is more a detriment than that same tax on someone making $100k. Uh. Hello.

It was always vaporware and malware. They never had a plan. They had 8 years the most they figured out was repealing Obamacare. They didn’t have anything that would cover as many people for as much and cost comparably.

All they’ve done is lie about Obamacare, lie about how it’s failing, and then sabotaging it at every opportunity to make that a self-fulfilling prophesy. Except even the GOP has been forced to admit that they’re buggering themselves because they don’t understand how insurance works, how Obamacare works, and don’t care because all they are fixated on is tax cuts for the rich.

One more post about my state…

nprillinois.org

Someone has the right idea. And they are a democrat. Imagine that!

Rates have been proposed in separate bills. This year, that legislation is House Bill 689 and is sponsored by Skokie Democratic Rep. Lou Lang. Under that plan, tax rates would be reduced or remain the same for the vast majority of workers in the state, but they would spike sharply on income greater than $500,000 (for a single person with no children.) The bill would not affect corporate income tax rates. For more on how the rates would work under different scenarios, see this story.

Our flat tax system sucks.

Nary a day goes by when Trump or Ryan spew nonsense about how Obamacare is awful, and the Trump twits claim Obamacare sucks and it needs to be repealed.

Not a single one of them can identify how Trumpcare provides better coverage than before Obamacare, let alone the vastly improved coverage provided by Obamacare.

Rather, they all seem to fixate on the fact that you would have the freedom to go without coverage, which is rather curious since the individual mandate was meant to provide personal responsibility for your own coverage. It was created by the folks at Heritage as an inducement to get people covered. We see this with idiot Senators like Cornyn who think the freedom of Americans to get a medically induced bankruptcy is preferable to millionaires paying higher taxes.

Has anyone analysed Trump’s posture of sitting with his hands between his knees?

The problem isn’t that we are studying his posture or handshake, it’s that Trump doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about and he’s entering into a discussion with a savvy foreign leader who takes advantage of people like Trump every fucking day.

And yet there are idiots who think Trump will best Putin here?

These are the people who advise Trump and tell Trump what he wants to hear. They aren’t advisers. They’re sycophants who are as clueless as Trump.

There was not a thing wrong with that dress. It was downright matronly compared to some dresses I’ve seen for prom (dresses which I’d burn if I had a daughter who tried to wear it).

It’s probably something his dad or Roy Cohn told him to do: ‘sit on the edge of your seat so you’ll look like the alpha, the man of action.’

Problem is, an alpha would be sitting back, relaxed, with an open posture. He looks very beta to me-looking for an opening to move up. 71 is too old and POTUS is to high up to be looking for that kind of advancement. It just looks stupid.
And Trump looked exhausted in most of the shots of him yesterday. Sad.

Sir John Barron  Jul 7, 2017 • 7:39:25am

Our so-called president said this yesterday in Poland:

After chastising CNN — a go-to move on both sides of the Atlantic — Mr. Trump went after NBC, his former employer. “NBC is nearly as bad, despite the fact that I made them a lot of money on ‘The Apprentice,’ ” he said.

I realize this goes without saying, and that this slurp of derp is par for the course with DJT, but dTrupr is basically saying here that, just because he made NBC a lot of money, their news coverage of him should be more favorable, i.e. slanted towards him.

This is a profoundly unserious person and when our press fails to challenge this they collude however unwittingly with the whole farce.

But it’s unsurprising Drumpf is starting to single out NBC. Either before or after these comments, Hallie Jackson of NBC challenged him on his refusal to assent to the U.S. IC conclusions as to the source of the election hacking.

If the photo she posted in the mirror was the same dress (which it looks like), her height is irrelevant. The dress came below mid-thigh. Would it have been longer on someone shorter? Sure. But it wasn’t “too” short by any standards other than Flashdance types.

I have no particular objection to the term “Social Justice Warrior.” I’m all for social justice. (Perhaps we could do away with the term “warrior,” but social justice is a good thing.)

That said, like any ideology or movement, moonbats, wingnuts, and just plain uneducated people will latch on to promote some ridiculous agenda (see Flat Earthers).

There was an incident at the University of Cape Town, where students met with the faculty to air grievances. That’s fine… .

However, a woman expressed the idea that “science is racist” and it should be scrapped, and rebuilt from an African perspective. Science she asserts should allow for opinions that are different than “Western knowledge” and should be “decolonised” (as if science was an imperialist land-grab).

Have their been racist scientists? Sure. Have education systems been jury-rigged to prohibit minorities (or the majority since this is from South Africa)? Hell yes. Has pseudoscience been used to advance racist causes? Yup. Is a method for understanding evidence inherently racist? Nope, nope, nope.

This woman was taken apart by scores of people on YouTube for trying to do things like placing “black magic” on the same shelf as science.

I picked one video (by Thunderf00t) though there are many by people from all continents and races dragging this woman for her stunning ignorance (while she uses a tablet computer to drag out her talking points).

Yay! I hope they end up having to fix the ACA. That is going to hurt the GOP and Trump bigly. It’s not a sure thing yet, but looking better.

I guess the big bad GOP didn’t have all the power and money moves many here were saying they would use to force this legislation down everyone’s throats.

It is still politics. Votes still count, they want to hold their offices and the people were riding them hard.

And as stated in the past by many a politician…once it is the law it will be hard to eliminate it.

I think some guy by the name of Obama and a powerful little lady named Pelosi wrote it well enough to stick. Unlike the GOP, they knew legislation and the law.

Yay! I hope they end up having to fix the ACA. That is going to hurt the GOP and Trump bigly. It’s not a sure thing yet, but looking better.

I think some guy by the name of Obama and a powerful little lady named Pelosi wrote it well enough to stick. Unlike the GOP, they knew legislation and the law.

We still have to apply pressure so that they won’t sneak something through in the middle of the night and that they will work honestly with Dems to mend the flaws in the ACA. The House bill was dead until it wasn’t. Never underestimate the malevolence of the GOP.

I never do. I also do not give them credit they do not deserve.

Sure we need to keep the pressure on. It is that real pressure from real voters that is helping. I am going to compose my fourth email to Robby Portman on healthcare to help keep that pressure going, probably send it out over the weekend.

You bring up the House bill, saying it wasn’t dead. It sure as hell was not alive was it? Everyone knew that piece of crap wasn’t going anywhere…it was all a show for Donny to get his win. Even he said it was mean a few weeks later. The Senate knew it was up to them to actually come up with something as they knew the House bill was a dud. And what has the Senate come up with?

I guess the big bad GOP didn’t have all the power and money moves many here were saying they would use to force this legislation down everyone’s throats.

It is still politics. Votes still count, they want to hold their offices and the people were riding them hard.

And as stated in the past by many a politician…once it is the law it will be hard to eliminate it.

I think some guy by the name of Obama and a powerful little lady named Pelosi wrote it well enough to stick. Unlike the GOP, they knew legislation and the law.

Yes, after ratf0cking the ACA markets for eight years with an eye towards repealing it later or just for the hell of it, the GOP now faces the task of needing to keep those markets working because it realizes it has non-corporate constituents.

In my E-mail this morning, an article from Foreign Affairs (I subscribe to the print magazine because I am part of the evil Council on Foreign Relations and associated with the Illuminati and Lizard People - see LGF for the latter):

How a Chinese Billionaire Threatens the Communist Party

arlier this year, Guo Wengui, an expatriate Chinese billionaire, began to make explosive allegations on YouTube and Twitter about China’s leaders. President Xi Jinping, Guo claimed, had sought incriminating information about Wang Qishan, Xi’s right-hand man and the chief of his anticorruption campaign. The figure tasked with rooting out China’s official graft, Guo suggested, was himself corrupt—if not directly, then through his family’s alleged financial holdings.

Guo’s claims seemed designed to sever China’s most important political relationship before this fall’s 19th Party Congress, where officials will determine Xi’s longevity as president and select members for China’s top decision-making bodies. Xi’s power rests in part on Wang’s anticorruption campaign, and any deterioration in the relationship between the two men-real or perceived-could embolden Xi’s rivals or rattle his supporters, who may defect to his opponents.

Guo has neither named a source nor provided conclusive evidence for his claims, and their validity is unclear. Nevertheless, the allegations have signaled the emergence of a new tool in Chinese politics: weaponized leaks. As the infighting within the Chinese Communist Party has intensified, Guo has shown, elites can undermine their rivals by implicating them in the widespread collusion between China’s political and economic leaders.

There is that as well. In a state like mine, which is very unlikely to go for a Democratic candidate, the legislature works as hard as possible to ensure all voters can vote (we’ve had mail voting long before Oregon and Washington proposed it, for example).

Here, they just gerrymandered the most-likely Democratic House district (the one that went for President Obama in 2008 and put a Democratic representative in the US House) since our electoral votes are divided by district rather than winner-take-all. (It is possible to gerrymander the two state votes in NE and ME by gerrymandering the House districts).

More on Shapiro’s article:

He shoots himself in the foot by his claim “there are moral atheists and immoral Christians.”

It would appear then that religion is not a pathway to morality, a point lost on Mr. Shapiro.

And …

But as a system of thought, atheism cannot be the basis for any functional state.

Fail. Atheism is not a system of thought: It is a lack of belief in any gods. I would suppose Mr. Shapiro is just as atheistic about Kali as I am, though Kali has hundreds of millions of believers.

As it is only a statement on the position of belief in a god, of course it can’t be the basis of a functional state.

At best, I would argue Shapiro has less of an education than I do. At worst, he’s lying about atheists and building a strawman of atheism, like hundreds of millions of Christian apologists before him. I won’t waste my time deconstructing his article, and if I were to E-mail him he would ignore it because it doesn’t fit his religious views. If I were to comment at Town Hall I would simply be banned.

I still remember the Firedoggers, Berniebots and Jill Shills who loved tearing Obama to pieces alleging he traded everything away to Republicans and got nothing in return.

Now I wonder what Dolt 45 didn’t give away to His Master in their meeting?

My brother-in-law just got my postcard in the mail (a faux wedding announcement of the union of the Sun and Moon) for the eclipse, with an eclipse stamp on it.

He says he is going to use it with the principal in his school as an excuse to get time off work to come visit.

Problem is Joe…all three groups you mention have an out. They didn’t like Clinton and they don’t like Trump. So they will like nothing about this and can continue to piss and moan because that is what they do.

By voting for Bernie, Johnson or Stein they will forever be above it all. The Safest of Spaces.

Forgot to post this yesterday (I couldn’t get on LGF at work because of DNS issues):

Chesterfield County school administrators have launched an investigation after a Bellwood Elementary School student claimed she was forced to run while fasting in observance of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

[…]

According to the ACLU letter, a physical education teacher insisted that the student run even after the student said she was fasting. When the teacher deemed her speed unsatisfactory, she said he then repeatedly forced the entire class to continue running as punishment.

“After being forced to run, the fasting student complained of feeling nauseous and weak,” the ACLU letter read.

The counter of course is “Do you think Clinton would take away women’s rights, minority rights, suppress the vote, harass the LGBT, or sell of our National Park system to the highest bidder?”

Even if they think every claim made about Mrs. Clinton is true (a neoliberal warmongering imperialistic shill, like me), the two (Trump and Clinton) are not the same.

Reminds me of Obama’s insistence that we look at why we are so susceptible to their weaponized info tactics.

The same folks who have to think about if it’s better to screw over Dems or get life saving healthcare will gladly submit to the great white Russian anti-hope.

It’s just extraordinary how relatively easy this is for Putin. The ROI is huge.

So Cenk apparently was blaming Pelosi for the Iraq War Resolution’s passage. Nevermind that most House Dems voted against the bill and Pelosi was given credit for whipping up the majority of the minority House Dems against it. Cenk meanwhile gets a healthy salary to spew up bullshit. Me? I’m a mere law lcerk. I’d suggest that Cenk and I switch places but I wouldn’t want to fuck over my boss by giving him Cenk who has no desire for accurate information.

Ultimately, conservatism is about gaining and maintaining power. If democracy will help conservatism do that, then democracy it is.

If democracy will not, a conservative government will throw democratic institutions under a train in a heartbeat - it has always been thus.

The idea that “I didn’t leave the GOP, they left me” is patent nonsense. Ever since the GOP became the conservative party, power has been the goal. Pulling in Russia-worshippers, power-hungry Evangelical churches, &c are all part-and-parcel of gaining and maintaining power. Nothing else has ever mattered, and nothing else ever will.
