Listened to Bob Cesca for the time in months, which makes it the first time I’ve heard the circus pipe organ Imperial March he plays when mentioning Trump.

I laughed. Not nearly as hard as I did at the live MST3K show tonight, but it was close.

Rarely have I been to a “steak house” during the past few decades, but the “london broil” method is a good way to get flavor out of a piece of beef, I think.

I remember having shabu-shabu once in Tokyo (on sort of a date but that is a long story), and liked it very much, as the very thinly sliced high quality beef was a delightful change from the steaks of my youth.

It still boggles my mind that Trump likes his cows burnt. What a way to destroy a piece of meat. Given his other inclinations (such as pushing way glasses) I wonder about his phobias. I presume he has a fear of red meat as the redness of the beef reminds him of blood, and we know from where that comes out.

I really hate spinach, and if it were my steak I’d want it more well done, but… I wasn’t invited. So as long as you’re happy. (the rice thing looks good, too).

Oh no. When it comes to steaks, the habit I picked up from Dad is to just dab a little HP sauce on the side. Dad picked that up from British friends when he worked at the Charleston Navy Yard during WW2. After Dad had his first taste of HP, he never wanted anything else on meat.

I’ve worked in steakhouses as a grill cook. Well done steak orders were microwaved. Really well done orders (it happens, customer asks for it to be fuckin’ cooked, probably like Fuckface Von Clownstick likes it) were deep fried. Oh, I’d put some grill marks on the meat to give it a look, but if they wanted well done, I was giving it to them, with full approval from management. And I’d also use the shittiest cut of meat for the order, the one at the end of the slab, with all the gristle ‘n shit (not only did I cook all the steaks, I cut them too).

I went and saw Neil Gaiman speak at the Windspear Opera House with two of my kids. It was good. He answered a lot of presubmitted questions, and read some of his writing. A scoop: a press release will come out in a few days announcing the main main actors for a six episode showing of Good Omens. It is, in approximately his words, being put together by BBC with Amazon’s money, and will be available on Prime when it is finished.

Shit, man.

Yesterday in Hamburg
Also yesterday

What happened tonight was even worse.

This sort of thing has a bit of a tradition in Germany. Hard-left blocs turn up at demonstrations and riot. It’s what they do. One of our lesser known cultural pastimes.

It has little to do with Trump as some in the US left tend to assume. Actually these kind of people tend to have a “fuck everything” mindset not too far from Trumpkins themselves. For a lot of them it’s just their idea of having a good time, not unlike soccer hooligans.

The only thing that’s special at this G20 summit is that the whole thing is being acted out more extreme than expected or usual.

I can’t tell you how grateful I am that guns are not a thing around here.

Submitted for your consideration. Raul Labrador (R-ID Wingnut) is apparently going to leave Congress to run for Idaho Governor.

Wonkette weighs in on the prepper End Times prophet that is seeking his seat.

On Tuesday, a rightwing prepper and prophet of the End Times, Michael Snyder, announced he’s seeking Labrador’s seat, because what Congress really needs is a guy who writes for Charisma News, the Christianist website that’s so frequently over the top that people wonder if it might really be satire. The nice folks at RightWingWatch say Snyder runs his own prepper website called “The Economic Collapse,” but we’re not sure it counts, since it’s literally nothing more than a place to repost everything he writes at Charisma News, plus ads for gold, moving to Panama, and silver-based quack cures. Among Snyder’s recent insights are a condemnation of men dressing like women and t’other way ‘round, a call for a war on Globalism, and a profile of a guy who died, went to heaven, had a chat with Jesus, and came back (Jesus is “not overly large, but he’s massively built. You would think that he’s a weightlifter, a body builder”).

Oh, and also a thinky piece about a badly hurt bald eagle found on the streets of Washington DC, which Snyder believes is a sign from God that our nation is beat up, on its last legs, and should have been allowed to go extinct instead of being saved by the Endangered species Act faces grave threats to our freedom.

Read more at Wonkette.

I used to cook at a place frequented by Rep. Congressman Tim Johnson (IL). Johnson wanted his hamburger to just touch the grill for about a second on each side—literally. The first time I cooked it—and I had been warned—I did it for about 30 seconds per side. The waitress came back in tears after he verbally abused her for not conveying his order properly. What an asshole.

Putin is at war with the U.S. and our president* is complaisant and/or complicit.

“…hackers recently infiltrated an unidentified company that makes control systems for equipment used in the power industry, an attack that officials believe may be related.

The chief suspect is Russia, according to three people familiar with the continuing effort to eject the hackers from the computer networks. One of those networks belongs to an aging nuclear generating facility known as Wolf Creek — owned by Westar Energy Inc., Great Plains Energy Inc. and Kansas Electric Power Cooperative Inc. — on a lake shore near Burlington, Kansas.”

Gold nuts believe GOLD!! is the answer to all economic and political ills. Allow people to own GOLD!!, they say, and economic oppression and classism will be eliminated. The Fed will be obsolete. Governments will quiver at the strength of the people who own GOLD!! In case of total anarchy, the only useful form of money will be GOLD!! so buy as much as you can now … through our website.

There are some more logical reasons to own gold and silver as a hedge against inflation. But neither one is going to save your ass if some guy decides to take your food stores instead of your cache of gold sovereigns.

I bet the world leaders, especially the men, prefer dealing with Ivanka. After all, she’s polished, attractive, and sophisticated. She may be a grifter like her father, but she’s not demented and her understanding of issues eclipses his.

When Bill ran for president, he quipped that the voters would get “two for the price of one”. Of course, both Clintons were true policy wonks. Trump certainly never said that, but he is operating on that principle.

Morning! Seems like central Ohio gets a break from the damn humidity today. Yay!

Seeing the video of the Trump not turning around and having to be told shows how when he was up against the desk top he was sitting back in his chair. When he had to turn around he went to his squatting on the edge of his seat with his legs spread.

That is the position VB and others wonder about.

I think I’ve figured it out. He’s hiding his big gut. Well, trying to anyway. He must think that his gut gets to hang flatter when it is hanging out over the chair and also his tie can hang down straighter with its length and that gives him a ‘flatter’ looking front.

If he sits back against the chair, of course his coat and tie are going to be following the big belly and it will all be forward more clearly showing he’s fat.

It’s all about the fake optics with Donny. He probably practiced that in front of a mirror to see what looks best. Just like his hair and his ties, all are designed and messed with to give him a look opposite of the reality.

He is a very strange guy…so worried about his looks. He doesn’t understand, all that makes him look funky. If he could accept himself as he is and relax in his own skin he might be fat and balding, but at least he wouldn’t be so damn fake.

Fundy prepper: “Hey, you there with the little gun! I’ll give you a gold Krugerrand for that rabbit you just shot.”
Rational prepper: “Er, no thanks but ya’ got any barbecue sauce?”

More like:

Prepper: “I’ll give you a gold Krugerrand for that rabbit you just shot!”
Guy with Gun: “How ‘bout you give me the rest of your Krugerrands.”

VOTER FRAUD BREAKING NEWS
Iowa woman who tried to vote for Trump twice pleads guilty to election misconduct

A woman from Des Moines, Iowa, pleaded guilty to election misconduct for attempting to cast two separate ballots in the 2016 presidential election for then-Republican nominee Donald Trump.

According to the Associated Press, Terri Lynn Rote, 57, entered her plea for the felony charge on June 27. Court documents state that lawyers affiliated with the case are recommending Rote face up two years of probation with community service on the side.

Rote told police why she tried to vote more than once. She was convinced her first vote for Mr. Trump would be manipulated and changed to a vote for then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. According to her statement to the police, Rote believed Mr. Trump’s claims about widespread election rigging.

Sanity isn’t always what is needed. After all, like Putin, most psychopaths are sane. To quote George Bernard Shaw: “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man”

We had the choice of a sane, reasonable candidate in 2016 and she was rejected by a sufficient minority of voters. Courtesy of Republican mandated voter suppression and the Bernie Bro fanaticism, I’m not sure we will be getting a President who can govern effectively and in the interests of this nation any time soon.

My one real foray into public activism was in the 1990’s. I was a very active member of the committee in my suburb to stop the authorities from reducing the deer population through culling. It led to the defeat of the mayor in our town; although the elections were formally non-partisan, the mayor (who supported culling) was a D and replaced by an R, who opposed culling, primarily because he opposed anything the mayor supported. OTOH, this was when the GOP was still sane and he was actually a good mayor.

Just like last week when he tweeted about Joe Scarborough and said something like “I haven’t watched, but I am watching today” Sure. Yeah, right Donny.

Did anyone watch House of Cards this year? I didn’t, because it’s so out of date in the age of Trump.

188
lawhawk  Jul 8, 2017 • 9:55:59am

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump was at the G20, and decided to give up his seat to Ivanka while he had a side meeting.

The amount of things wrong with that statement:

1) Ivanka is an unelected know nothing whose only reason for even being there is because she’s daddy’s favorite spawn. She has no skills or qualifications to sit in that role. She has no foreign policy experience and there are people who at least passed through the confirmation process who could (even if they too are also unqualified - Tillerson, I’m looking at you).

2) Ivanka and Kushner are Trump’s go-to on foreign policy despite Kushner having security clearance troubles - lying on his clearances is grounds for criminal charges (perjury). He should have his security revoked and instead they’re all rubbing shoulders with foreign leaders.

3) The only thing that makes sense here is that Ivanka’s trying to build her contact list and this is how they do it in oligarchies like mother Russia.

4) Trump’s performance throughout the G20 has been inuring benefit to Russia at every opportunity, and the rest of the G20 are recognizing it, which is why while Trump’s busy cozying up to Putin, the rest of the world is attempting to insulate itself from Trump’s dumbassery.

5) right wingers will continue thinking that all this is okay, and that there’s nothing wrong with Ivanka doing this. Bullshit. These same right wingers would be calling for impeachment had Obama allowed Michelle, let alone Sasha or Malia sit in for him; let alone Hillary allowing Chelsea to do the same. IOKIYAR strikes again.

6) Trump undermining US national security once more. Trump and his cronies don’t care about operational security or national security, and that they’re doing these kinds of things shows that they don’t take any of their oaths of office seriously. If they did, they wouldn’t be pursuing policies that favor Russia over the US. Everything Trump says and does is suspect.

7) Russia released the footage of Ivanka sitting in for daddy. Russia knows how to play everyone and all of Trump’s fuckups to Putin’s benefit. It’s what they do.

Price of gold has gone down since the election.

Price of gold has gone down since the election.

Funny that.

Gold prices typically rise when investors feel insecure about other markets, so they start buying gold as a hedge. If prices are falling, does that suggest investors are confident about the markets in the Age of Trump? Because I sure am not. I’m waiting for some colossally stupid decision by Trump that will tank the markets, or lead to some kind of economic disaster for the States.

Right Wing Types are so very secure in their believe that Trump will bring riches, that, yes, the Market is bullish.

There was a distinct change after election day —gold when down like $300 and the Market soared.

speaking of the co-option of our President by foreign agencies, any one else surprised that the GOP leadership has essentially been unavailable for comment during our President’s Foreign Policy Adventure in Wonderland?

Does this speak to the fact that they’ve got:

a) nothing to say
b) agree with what’s going on
c) are just as compromised as he is

At this point, I believe that the only way through for our nation (providing we ever see elections again) is the defeat and relegation of the GOP into a non-entity politically. At the ballot box and through the courts. If some trigger happy but frustrated Dem starts shooting GOP politicians I’m afraid it’ll devolve into a virtual civil war.

If you didn’t have them already, those heels would give you bad feet, back, and whatever part you landed on.

I crashed my bike again yesterday, so it’s not always the shoes. But I wear a helmet.

Right Wing Types are so very secure in their believe that Trump will bring riches, that, yes, the Market is bullish.

There was a distinct change after election day —gold when down like $300 and the Market soared.

As usual, they are focused on short-term goals — like deregulation and “travel bans” — and not on long-term consequences of those goals.

They didn’t really start that up ‘til after the oil crash in the 80s. I lived in the southeast corner of the state, not that far from Roswell, when I was a kid. We got our TV news from the Roswell TV stations. No one ever talked about that except as a “Tee hee, look at this crazy thing from way back when.”

Then the oil market went belly-up, and the Roswell economic board said, well, oil’s gone bust, could we do tourism? What on earth could we do tourism on from this dusty section of the state? And all at once, there got to be a lot more talk about the Strange Mystery of the UFO Crash. Who Covered It Up? What Alien Mysteries Did They Find? Here’s An Old Paranoid Dude To Wax Rhapsodic About Dead Aliens!

We got “The X-Files” out of it, eventually. We got the great “Delta Green” RPG, too. I guess that’s alright.

He won’t ever go that far because he is a Christian and they don’t generally hold with making men into gods, but the guy literally can’t say enough good words about Trump and how he is the best President ever. He is actively rooting for America to go to war (which is interesting, because he’s currently enlisted and would be GOING OVER THERE if we did).

Administration fascists high-five selves over Trump’s “successful” G-20 appearance.

“…from the perspective of Mr. Trump’s team, the trip to Poland and Germany turned out to be a surprising early high point in his presidency, providing a brief but welcome respite from the forever wars in Washington. It left the president, who had been less than enthusiastic about coming, buoyant and feeling that there might still be a market for his hard-edge brand of conservative nationalism in supposedly inhospitable Europe after all.

“This week’s trip gave the country a very clear sense of the president’s foreign policy philosophy and reiterated the long-term objective of restoring America’s greatness on the world stage,” said Jason Miller, a former Trump campaign aide who still advises the president and his staff informally.”

I still listen to AM radio. Which means conservative radio. Elder is fast talking and smooth. Prager is a wonky bookish teacher type. Gallagher is a jerky dudebro. Levin is an angry ‘get off my lawn’ bitch.

None of them say anything compelling or though provoking, it’s just a repeating and reinforcement of tropes. The only thing that changes is the current events: they’re take on them is as predictable as their time slots.

If we couldn’t have summoned the will to punish the Confederates for their crimes while Atlanta and Savannah were still smoking, what chance do reparations stand 150 years down the line? All the people directly involved are dead.

Reparations should be given a chance. Why not? Why are you so negative? Did you read the linked article?

Baptized in Blood: The Religion of the Lost Cause, 1865-1920

“”Civil religion” has been defined as the religious dimension of a people that enables them to understand a historical experience in transcendent terms. In this light, Wilson explores the role of religion in postbellum southern culture and argues that the profound dislocations of Confederate defeat caused southerners to think in religious terms about the meaning of their unique and tragic experience. The defeat in a war deemed by some as religious in nature threw into question the South’s relationship to God; it was interpreted in part as a God-given trial, whereby suffering and pain would lead Southerners to greater virtue and strength and even prepare them for future crusades.”

I have gotten rid of the vast bulk of Trump supporters in my life, friends and family. Don’t have that kind of patience.

But one friend has been my lifeline for 25 years. He hated Hillary so much he turned Trump. Now he’s stuck and won’t admit Trump is a disaster. He still thinks Hillary would be worse.

You can’t argue with an imaginary scenario.

So, this friendship has become a once a month text to see if the other is still alive. We talk about nothing of any consequence.

25 years. I hope that when our national nightmare has passed, some of these broken relationships will find a way to mend themselves. There are those who can’t admit they were wrong today but are capable of it over time.

And some are never going to be worth knowing again.
