It’s July. Same applies to most of the country.

I appreciate that it’s summer and all but the SouthWest is in a heat wave. It’s been brutal in Phoenix. LA broke a 131 year record.

97º bake here in south central Texas.

Was 95 degrees F (35 degrees C) two days ago, and the air conditioner in Mrs. Fish’s daily driver was causing the car to overheat. It was not a happy day for fishspawn. Should be resolved now, I hope.

97 degrees in Houston, but a slight breeze. August is going to be sheer hell. Thank God for AC.

I have gotten rid of the vast bulk of Trump supporters in my life, friends and family. Don’t have that kind of patience.

But one friend has been my lifeline for 25 years. He hated Hillary so much he turned Trump. Now he’s stuck and won’t admit Trump is a disaster. He still thinks Hillary would be worse.

You can’t argue with an imaginary scenario.

So, this friendship has become a once a month text to see if the other is still alive. We talk about nothing of any consequence.

25 years. I hope that when our national nightmare has passed, some of these broken relationships will find a way to mend themselves. There are those who can’t admit they were wrong today but are capable of it over time.

And some are never going to be worth knowing again.

“It’s a dry madness.”

Unless you live up here, then the relative humidity never drops below 70% and walking outside literally feels like getting punched in the gut. And when I say literally, I do actually mean literally; it will take the wind out of you if you aren’t braced for it.

Okay, I lied. Today the current air temperature (of course, it is later afternoon) is 80 degrees F (26.7 degrees C), and the relative humidity is only 48%. Only 48%! I think I’ll go for a walk!

In the wild north country, it’s mosquitoes. Forget what the fact sheet says, our state bird isn’t the common loon, it’s the giant Northern mosquito. On hot, humid summer nights, communities issue warnings to keep children and small pets inside, lest they be carried off.

But what is clawing at the way to anal retentive portion of my brain is, how in the hell did they manage to get that one line in the title block out of center alignment?

Several of my Chinese students do not know how center text in Word, because their first exposure to it was freshman year in college. So, they either use the space bar or the tab key to move text toward the right.

I wonder if they could get jobs with the Trump administration. They’re just as qualified as the jokers working there now.

Another day, another thread in the tangled web of lies, deceit, and treachery that is the Trump Administration. I’d ask when the nightmare will be over, but it’s becoming clear that it won’t be. That does not mean I am going to give up, though; far from it. I will keep up the pressure because it is the right thing to do, regardless of if it produces results. re: #20 Ace Rothstein

How can anyone after the last six months say with a straight face that Hillary would’ve been worse?

Fox News. Conspiracy sites. Surrounding themselves with other that think the same. And looking for things to excuse a wrong choice because to admit it was wrong is still about the Clintons. It’s about Whitewater and Paula Jones and “I did not have sex with that woman.”

It’s also about a hatred of Obama built on small government libertarianism. Snowden. Assange. Paranoia.

In the end, it’s all about the conspiracies they see everywhere.

Why do they do this? I don’t know.

Trump told these people what they needed to hear. And there’s a reason he keeps bringing up Hilary and Obama. Much of his base hates them more than they like him.

So in their minds, there was a vast conspiracy Hilary was part of. Trump may be bad, but she would have destroyed the world. As insane as that sounds.

Digging them out of that is impossible. The more people try, the more they consider them “sheep.”

They will have to figure it out for themselves. Some will if they’re left alone. Others never will.

Are the Trumps getting bolder as in thinking they are getting away with all of this because nothing has happened to them? They see Flynn seems to be free and hasn’t been charged with anything…maybe in their minds they see it as nothing there.

So Trump accepts Russia’s ‘word’ they had nothing to do with the election, Junior now admitting setting up meetings, their response to everything is a fuck-you you’re fake news, liars, liberals…our backers hate you. They are acting like untouchables.

And yet, the investigations that count are just getting started. This is the way Washington works. They aren’t clear of anything and they don’t have the power in DC they think they have.

But go on ahead and be cocky. If they are getting bolder they will surely screw up and make more mistakes and blab and boast their way into creating more and more suspicion and evidence.

If history is our guide, then thinking you’re free from suspicion is when you should be the most cautious. Truly smart investigators aren’t going to call you up and say “We’re looking into your activities, you better not do anything illegal.” The fact that Mueller isn’t advertising what’s happening should be cause for concern for the Trumps, not an indication that there’s no “there” there.

Hillary’s Arkansas law license was suspended in 2002 for a similar reason: she did not complete Arkansas continuing education requirements. The positions she has held since then did not require her to practice law and therefore her status remains suspended. So not surprising that lies like this circulate on the Internet.

re: #43 Charles Johnson

The world is questioning Trump’s Leadership

Analysis from our National News service this am
abc.net.au

The G20 became the G19 as it ended. On the Paris climate accords the United States was left isolated and friendless.
It is, apparently, where this US President wants to be as he seeks to turn his nation inward.
Donald Trump has a particular, and limited, skill-set. He has correctly identified an illness at the heart of the Western democracy. But he has no cure for it and seems to just want to exploit it.
He is character drawn from America’s wild west, a travelling medicine show man selling moonshine remedies that will kill the patient.

Given the US was always going to be one out on climate change, a deft American President would have found an issue around which he could rally most of the leaders.
He had the perfect vehicle — North Korea’s missile tests.
So, where was the G20 statement condemning North Korea? That would have put pressure on China and Russia? Other leaders expected it and they were prepared to back it but it never came.
There is a tendency among some hopeful souls to confuse the speeches written for Mr Trump with the thoughts of the man himself.{my bold - thinking of some of the US media’s reaction to his speeches}
He did make some interesting, scripted, observations in Poland about defending the values of the West.
And Mr Trump is in a unique position — he is the one man who has the power to do something about it.
But it is the unscripted Mr Trump that is real. A man who barks out bile in 140 characters, who wastes his precious days as President at war with the West’s institutions — like the judiciary, independent government agencies and the free press.
….
Mr Trump is a man who craves power because it burnishes his celebrity. To be constantly taking and talked about is all that really matters. And there is no value placed on the meaning of words. So what is said one day can be discarded the next.
…..

VOCABULARY WORD OF THE EVENING:

Dispensationalism

is a religious interpretive system for the Bible. It considers Biblical history as divided deliberately by God into defined periods or ages to each of which God has allotted distinctive administrative principles. According to dispensationalist interpretation, each age of the plan of God is thus administered in a certain way, and humanity is held responsible as a steward during that time. The harmony of history is demonstrated as focusing on the glory of God and puts God at its center as opposed to a central focus on man and humanity’s need for salvation.[1] A dispensational perspective of scripture is evident in some early Jewish circles, as seen in the Dead Sea Scrolls like The Community Rule (1QS).[2] The system was embraced by early fundamentalist Christianity as a defense of the Bible against liberalism and modernism and became the majority position within fundamentalism.

Each dispensation is marked by a cycle: God reveals himself and his truth to humanity in a new way. Humanity is held responsible to conform to that revelation. Humanity rebels and fails the test. God judges humanity and introduces a new period of probation under a new administration. Ultimately, dispensationalism demonstrates the progress of God’s revelation to man and God’s sovereignty through history.[3][4][5]

Tlayudas, the traditional street food of Oaxaca, are among the featured menu items at Xochi.

New (to me) regional variation of food on flat bread.

“…The fourth restaurant from James Beard Award-winning chef Hugo Ortega focuses exclusively on cuisine from the Oaxacan region of Mexico, which means a fascinating array of moles, along with the iconic street food known as tlayudas (the one stuffed with mushrooms and Texas goat cheese is our current favorite) and dishes based around insects.”

Yep, but I’ll go ahead and say this…..they are men. The article does a good job of talking about how Texas women have come out of nowhere in the most unlikely scenarios and won elections. It mentions Barbara Jordan (first African-American woman in Congress), Anais (sp) Parker (first lesbian mayor, Houston), and Ann Richards.

Women are a complicated subject in Texas. On one hand our rights are under attack constantly, on the other hand we’re strong as fuck and everyone knows it. And we tend to come out of nowhere and win elections at random times.

It’s pretty clear why Politico just starts off their editorial assuming Trump would have won as a Democrat: There’s no plausible way to explain how it could have happened. He won the GOP primary for a simple reason: His opponents were splitting the non-Trump vote such that by the time they’d unified behind a single candidate, he already had too much of a lead to be stopped. In a smaller field, he’d have been fucked because he was too conservative to win Bernie supporters but too much of a fucking asshat to win Hillary supporters. He’d have been fighting over the “Reagan Democrats” who did so much good for Jim Webb’s campaign. His presence in the Dem primaries would have shifted the final votes in a couple early states, but after Super Tuesday he’d have been mathematically eliminated and reduced to bitching about how it was all “rigged” against him.

I think they are out to fog everything in misdirection, fake setup stories and overall muck and mire. It’s dirty politics time. The Roy Cohn tactics can never be too far from use.

re: #154 Targetpractice

In short, even Trump knew if he were to run it would be as a Republican. He’s an opportunist first. He was a Democrat at one time, he knew that wouldn’t work.

If he ran as a Dem, all his opponents would have piled on him for the birther crap, and he wouldn’t have made it to the 3rd debate.

Local NBC News Story. It was all at the Federal Building downtown. Portman’s office is inside. They were in the lobby. In the video clip a CPD officer even says if we have to push you out of your chair to clear a pathway we will.

People have been at Portman’s office a lot lately.

Iframe

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus Police have arrested 16 people who were protesting at Sen. Rob Portman’s office in downtown Columbus.

According to witnesses, protesters were trying to get the attention of Senator Portman, but they refused to leave the building’s lobby when ordered to do so by police. Officers say the protesters prevented Columbus Division of Fire medics from being able to quickly reach a person inside who was suffering chest pains.

After finally getting to the location Columbus Division of Fire was called to, they were unable to find anyone in need of help.

In the meantime, several protestors were detained for criminal trespassing at the Huntington Plaza building.

The protesters were asking Senator Portman to vote no on the Senate’s new health care bill. They claim the bill would take away coverage from those who have the most need.

“We wanted him to understand you know who the people are that are receiving the Medicaid services that are about to go away,” said Kim Kelly, one of the protestors in his office at the time.

The demonstration was organized by disability rights groups ADAPT.

Portman’s press secretary issued the following statement:

Rob welcomes input from all 11.5 million Ohioans who are able to visit or call any of our offices to discuss any topic. Yesterday, we met with protesters from the Democratic Socialists of America, and after they refused to leave even when the buildings closed, we allowed them to stay the night. Our staff spoke with them again today. We aren’t going to allow a handful of Socialists, many of whom are from New York to disrupt our ability to serve the needs of the Ohio constituents who contact us in need of vital services every day. When the groups impeded the work of other tenants in the building, building security called local law enforcement.

Kelly says, that statement doesn’t reflect the kind of communication the office had with her that day.

“[Portman’s Press Secretary] kept saying, “Oh, he holds hundreds of meetings all over the state,” where are those meetings and where can we find the schedule so that we know when to show up?” said Kelly. “She said that they don’t publish them because it’s a safety issue for the senator.”

Another protestor, who had been in Portman’s office the day before and at the protest since noon on Thursday, had this to say about the statement.

“At no time from noon [Thursday] throughout the day were there anybody representing DSA or anyone affiliated with DSA who was inside the office or spoke with a representative from Portman’s office,” said Atticus Garden the campaign coordinator for Yes We Can Columbus.

Columbus police say the actions taken by officers in the lobby were standard procedure.

“If the police ask you to leave, you’re blocking the path for fire and medic, if we have to push you out of your wheelchair, then that’s what we’ll have to do,” said Lt. Dan Hargus.

Hargus says once the lobby was cleared, they told protesters three times to leave the property or they would be arrested.

15 people refused, all of them were from out of state.

In the 80s there was a little liquor store in Decatur, GA that had a drive-through window you could pass 1-gallon plastic milk jugs to for a fillerup from a keg. As I recall, it was Old Milwaukee quality beer.

I do. Besides being the last Republican I could respect, Bob Dole was a hero of science. He was badly wounded in Italy in 1945 and lost the use of his right arm. A year later, a chronic infection still prevented his recovery. The new antibiotic streptomycin had just begin human trials. Subject #1 died. #2 survived but was permanently blinded. Dole volunteered to be subject #3. He made a complete recovery, the first person in history to be successfully treated with streptomycin.

Dole is employed by Alston & Bird LLC. Whether he personally loves or hates Trump is irrelevant to his public support of Trump.
