Classical precision meets uncompromising rock
on new album from world class guitarist. Steffen
Schackinger belongs to the absolute elite, and his
new album ‘Fire Dance’ takes his instrumental guitar
music to new heights.

With millions of views on YouTube, a worldwide tour
resume and international recognition as a top class
guitar player, Steffen Schackinger has established himself
as outstanding in his field.

His second solo album, Fire Dance, is no exception.
Steffen Schackinger combines precision and timing
from his background on the classical scene with the
uncompromising expression of rock music.

“I express myself through my guitar, as a singer does
with the voice and a painter with a brush. The strings
are not limited by language“, says Steffen Schackinger.
His first album earned him a spot on the prestigious
Guitar on the Edge top 50 of the world’s best guitarists
in 2010 ranking 15th. Since then he has been playing
guitar clinics throughout Europe and Asia. But now the
former Merzy guitarist is once again ready to hit the
stage.

The album Fire Dance is published by US label Candyrat
Records, and Steffen Schackinger is joined by
former Merzy bass player, Henrik Bjørn and drummer
Lars Daugaard of the Danish hit orchestra Gnags.

Here again I will lament the state of science “documentaries” on TV, even such old stalwarts like PBS’s Nova.

The drive to anthropomorphize, to make more exciting, or extravagant, to add the sex and sizzle… bring about misleading narratives.

Now, PBS still does some good shows - see Phil Plait’s series on Astronomy - that are educational. These are more web based though, meant for the few who seek them out. Perhaps they are used in classrooms.

I’m honestly beginning to wonder if this story was the “big thing” that the Trumps have been trying to slam the press preemptively over. Because if it is, I can see why they’d be worried. You’ve got Junior, Manafort, and Kushner involved in what to discerning eyes would look like a discussion about Russian sanctions.

The mayor of Whitechurch-Stoffville, Ontario (about 50km north of Toronto) keeps a conspiracy-style map of interconnected photographs of people on the city council, businesspeople, employees of the town, news reporters, and others. He claims these are people who are all trying to “stab him in the back” and calls it a “mind map.”

“The wall is normal … . There’s nothing vexatious. There’s nothing nasty. There’s nothing mean.”

But those who found their faces plastered on the wall don’t agree that it is normal.

“I’m highly disturbed by this,” said Darlene Shaw, who runs a project management company and has lived in the town of 45,000 her entire life. “This is not a mind map. This is not innocent. This is strategic and meticulous.

“As a woman, to have your photograph in the bathroom, is so demeaning,” said Shaw, a volunteer in town and on several committees.

“How do I deal with this man now? I’m a fairly independent woman, but now I feel like I have to be more cautious.”

For months now, the constant refrain from wingnuts is there is no “quo,” nothing that the Russians would want in exchange for helping Trump win. Junior’s admission is pretty much the first step towards a public acknowledgment that the Russians were courting the Trump campaign: Help sinking Hillary’s campaign in exchange for sanction relief.

More than just help winning the election; if those sanctions are lifted, dozens of Russian crooks can move billions of dollars into over-priced apartments in Trump and Kushner developments.

A woman who fled death squads in El Salvador crossed the border at Buffalo to Fort Erie. She was immediately apprehended under the Safe Harbour Agreement (which says that you must seek asylum in the first safe nation you arrive in).

Immediately civil libertarian organisations in Canada launched a case in court for her to stay in Canada, arguing that under the Trump Administration, the United States can no longer be considered a safe harbour for refugees.

(Move the Statue of Liberty to Toronto.)

A judge hearing initial arguments in the case gave a ruling allowing her to stay in Canada while the case is argued. The government argues that she should have applied for asylum in the USA. She argues that the USA would deport her to El Salvador and its death squads without considering an asylum plea.

Her family’s harassment by death squads is not under dispute. The only question before the court is whether the USA continues to constitute a safe harbour.

Nothing like having your cell phone decide to stop working while you’re in a foreign country for another 7 days. My Nexus 5X decided to go into the dreaded bootloop issue which is bad enough that a class action lawsuit is in the works against LG (the manufacturer) over the issue. Now I need to decide whether I try to get warranty on it, but that means I won’t have a phone for the next 7 days or I just head out to the mall here in Bucharest and buy a new phone. If I go the warranty route I have a very small window when I’m back in the US before I leave for Italy. This really sucks. :)

I feel so lost without a phone. Especially when I head out into the city. I might need Google Maps to find my way to places!

From a Slate article:

House Speaker Paul Ryan won’t hold public town hall meetings because he’s concerned about protesters coming in from outside his district. Ryan, who once seemed to relish overflowing town halls, seemed to make the policy official after holding several closed-door meetings with constituents.

“I don’t want to have a situation where we just have a screaming fest, a shouting fest, where people are being bused in from out of the district to get on TV because they’re yelling at somebody,”

Outside agitators. Paid protesters. Deep state

In discussing one of his recent debates, Matt Dillahunty describes the importance with connecting with his audience, which in the case of an atheist trying to speak with a church full of evangelicals is not easy:

I’ll start that video at the section:

Atheist Debates - Debate Review part 2 - Did Jesus Rise From The Dead

This of course is the problem for all of us as we attempt to confront our current social backward rush led by Trump and his cohorts.

Making connections can be a hard thing to do, but it is the fundamental rule when it comes to influencing other people.

Matt Dillahunty at one time was an evangelical, studying to earn his degree to be a pastor.

He took the “Great Commission” (1 Peter 3:15) seriously (always be able to give a good reason for your faith) and undertook studying the whole Bible. That lead him to becoming an atheist.

I had a crush on a young Baptist (this back in the 7th grade) and it was a time when Jesus Christ Superstar was all the hit and Jesus Freak paraphernalia and “One Way” T-shirts were even fashionable.

So I took to reading the Bible, but being inspired by a history teacher who taught us about the Historical Method and how to use original sources, I also started reading up on the history and origins of the Christian Scriptures…made an young atheist out of me in a big hurry.

I had to come back in because I found this:

theguardian.com

According to The Guardian, the Vatican has ruled: No gluten-free communion wafers.

There will be no gluten-free Jesus in the Catholic Church any more.

They also determined that GMO communion wafers are fine (really). So a genetically-modified Jesus is fine, but a gluten-free one is not.

In other news, how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

The unleavened bread used to celebrate the holy communion during Catholic masses can be made with genetically modified organisms, the Vatican said Saturday, but they cannot be entirely gluten-free.

Low-gluten bread is allowed but there must be enough protein in the wheat to make it without additives.

Cardinal Robert Sarah of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments said the guidance was needed now that Eucharistic bread and wine can be found in supermarkets and “even over the internet”.

Yes, a wafer is enough. My adult child reacts to any amount of gluten, and it’s not pretty. His dad and half-sister can digest limited gluten without obvious problems, but his nephew is as sensitive to it as he is. They have to be 100% gf. It triggers autoimmune problems that go beyond the GI track.

As for gmo wheat, there is none in our food chain. Some biotech scientists are working on glutenfree wheat, which would be wonderful for people with CD.

As I understand it, many Protestant churches use grape juice, because alcohol is evil, never mind the Wedding at Cana and other stories of alcohol in the New Testament.

I don’t really understand any of it. Too much to keep track of, which church holds something as sacramental and which thinks you will burn in Hell for that. Atheism is much easier.

Why not? The wafer is just bread - if you’re a believer, it remains bread until the moment of consecration. After that, well, it depends on the tradition & the theology. The gluten free thing is a bit of foolishness that the current bishop of Rome is giving over to the conservatives while he attempts more substantive reforms elsewhere.

This is about the dumbest on-line quiz I’ve ever seen

How Stereotypically White Are You

Well, I’m pretty white, so let’s take the quiz and find out.

You checked off 3 out of 100 possible white people scenarios.

Congratulations, you are NOT white! You’re the first of your friends to perfect a new dance move and never have to worry about what level of SPF you should use. Heck, you might not even know what SPF stands for and that’s OK because the sun is your friend and that’s cool as shit.

Well, that’s good to know. I am not white. I imagine my wife (and my whole town) would be surprised by that.

This is about the dumbest on-line quiz I’ve ever seen

How Stereotypically White Are You

Well, I’m pretty white, so let’s take the quiz and find out.

Well, that’s good to know. I am not white. I imagine my wife (and my whole town) would be surprised by that.

Questions such as “ever eaten poutine” (yes) and “voted for Mitt Romney” (no). Who are these people?

Clearly, all Canadians are white.

You’ve had fries? Hold that thought.
You’ve had cheese curds? Hold that thought too.
You’ve had gravy? Pour it over the other two thoughts.

Now you’ve had poutine. Yes, it’s a good guilty pleasure food…for the first few bites (adding pulled pork and jalapenos extends the experience)…but afterwards you’re all ‘Fuck, that was a mistake.’

Poutine is essentially French Fries (Julienne fries) with melted cheese curds on top, with gravy drizzled over them. You can make them at home.

Around here, you can buy cheese curds in grocery stores. Bake the French fries in an oven, and about two minutes before they are ready sprinkle cheese curds on top. When finished, drizzle gravy over them.

In some USA KFC restaurants, you can “hack the menu” as some KFCs have cheese curds. Ask them to serve their French fries with cheese curds microwaved on them and add KFC gravy. (There is an extra charge for the cheese and gravy.)

Want to know why roughly 39% of citizens, voted for President “Clueless”?

Well, how much of the local news media markets were controlled by the Fox Network at the time — roughly 39%. A corporation that had a broadcast policy: “Say only nice things about Republicans.”

And now the FCC Chairman Ajit Pai[no phone numbers allowed]), sees no problems with bumping up that share of Media Market control — even higher, for Sinclair’s proposed Mega-purchase of Tribune.

What is a good round number that the Chairman will sign-off on … 42% … 45% … 50% ?

The parents of the English infant Charlie Gard, who has a fatal genetic disorder and is only kept alive by medical machinery, are now appealing to conservatives in the US House to grant residency here so he can receive quackery medical treatment.

If this goes anywhere, this will look like Terri Schaivo all over again - and give a wingnut talking point to conservative voters that “Democrats are anti-life.”

According to physicians in the UK and agreed by its courts, the child has no chance of survival.

In the meantime, the GOP is poised to take health insurance from millions here whist cynically exploiting the pain of a family in the UK for political gain to drive voters to the polls.

Conservatism is anti-life: Like everything else, it’s always projection …

re: #149 Anymouse 🌹

I’m going to disagree with you slightly—it’s not quackery, it’s unproven. There’s a possibility it could work, but it’s only been tested on rat models. And even the doctor who administers the treatment doesn’t think it would help Charlie Gard.

Here’s one of the lower court decisions. The whole thing is worth reading, but paragraphs 94-108 are the discussion about the American doctor. Here’s the key quote:

“Seeing the documents this morning has been very helpful. I can understand the opinion that he is so severely affected by encephalopathy that any attempt at therapy would be futile. I agree that it is very unlikely that he will improve with that therapy. It is unlikely.”

I read that to indicate that the parents misled him as to how badly damaged Charlie Gard was.

This infuriates me in so many ways. There are children here in the USA who need help, but can’t get treatment because they live in states where the Republican administrations refused Medicaid assistance. And this family wants to bring their child, who, unfortunately and sadly, is not going to recover and would die if he was removed from the respirator, to the USA. It’s like waving a flag in front of a bull. People would not be happy about a child getting essentially useless therapy when there are so many other children who could be helped.

I understand Charlie’s their baby, their flesh and blood. But someone needs to smack some reality into them. My fear is they’ll get Charlie here and he’ll end up like the dead Jahi McMath—sustained on a respirator but not otherwise alive.

re: #56 Dr Lizardo

So I got bored and in reading the UK tabloid press, I noticed quite a few articles on Prince Harry and his American girlfriend, Meghan Markle - most were from the Daily Mail Fail.

I couldn’t help but notice the dogwhistling from the peanut gallery (ŧhe comments section) that was all gingerly dancing around, in their own uniquely British way, the fact that Ms. Markle is bi-racial.

Heh…..I can’t help but think there would be headspolsions aplenty if the Prince popped the question to Ms. Markle.

This is how we get to Liz 10.

Any inland SoCal Lizards online? I’m watching the weather web sites for radar, NOAA. Looks like thunderstorms coming from the south, monsoonal flow. Love to get your take on intensity. Nothing quite like reports on the ground. I may head out and chase them for the beauty shots and maybe a sunset out there. Hate to blow a tank of gas on a fizzle.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOS ANGELES/OXNARD CA
1018 AM PDT Sun Jul 9 2017

Latest visible satellite imagery showed mid-level clouds
increasing from the southeast, associated with monsoonal flow. A
weak disturbance embedded in the monsoonal flow, currently
approaching San Diego will continue to drift west-northwestward
into the coastal waters today. Moisture increases along and ahead
of this feature have been impressive with dewpoints rising well
into the 60s with even a few low 70s for interior portions of
Southeastern California. Increased and more widespread instability
associated with this feature will support the slight chance of
thunderstorms across southern waters extending into the coast and
valleys south of Point Conception as well as the Santa Ynez and
Cuyama Valleys with a slight chance to chance of thunderstorms
across the mountains into Antelope Valley.

The European press is embarrassing the U.S. press.

Will the U.S. Press at least play follow the leaders, or will they not even mention what Europe is thinking?

I guess now the European papers are pumping out fake news too.

Maybe Vlad and Donny can do an agreement to study all these fake news stories. I’m sure Vlad is concerned how Donny is being treated and how it makes the U.S. look overall.

Reports say an obstruction of justice charge is a slam dunk at this point. Mueller will just let them continue to tangle themselves up in the rope he’s giving them.

And Trump can hire every sleazy corporate lawyer he can afford. Won’t help much by the time the indictments start coming down.

My only remaining question about that chapter of our history is… are we sure it was an official CIA operation? Maybe it was a handful of CIA operatives doing a side-gig for their own personal enrichment.

All hail Gary Webb, the investigative journalist who broke the story in 1996. After much government pushback, and criticism by other newspapers, he lost his job. He later “committed suicide” by shooting himself in the head. Twice.

Well, to be fair the title of the quiz is “How Stereotypically White Are You”, so I thought: typically Celtic Scots guy, let’s give this spin, and I got 8 out of 100, though, to be be honest, round about the questions about Ace of Base, I thought: “Maybe this isn’t a serious questionnaire..”
