NYT: Trump Jr., Manafort and Kushner Met With Russian Lawyer After Being Promised Damaging Information on Clinton

Yesterday the New York Times broke the news that despite his categorical denial that he ever met with Russian nationals during the Trump campaign, Donald Trump Jr. had in fact done so. The scientific term for Trump Jr.’s denial is “a lie.”

But today, the Times is bringing out more details about the meeting between Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, and now it looks even worse — because the meeting was set up because Trump Jr. expected Veselnitskaya to give him damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton before agreeing to meet with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign, according to three advisers to the White House briefed on the meeting and two others with knowledge of it.

The meeting was also attended by his campaign chairman at the time, Paul J. Manafort, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Mr. Manafort and Mr. Kushner only recently disclosed the meeting, though not its content, in confidential government documents described to The New York Times.

The Times reported the existence of the meeting on Saturday. But in subsequent interviews, the advisers and others revealed the motivation behind it.

The meeting — at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016, two weeks after Donald J. Trump clinched the Republican nomination — points to the central question in federal investigations of the Kremlin’s meddling in the presidential election: whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians. The accounts of the meeting represent the first public indication that at least some in the campaign were willing to accept Russian help.

The Times states that when Trump’s son was contacted yesterday and asked about the meeting, he said nothing about Hillary Clinton. And today, Trump Jr. released another statement in which he basically admits he expected to get negative info on Clinton:

In a statement on Sunday, Donald Trump Jr. said he had met with the Russian lawyer at the request of an acquaintance. “After pleasantries were exchanged,” he said, “the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”

A big question here: who was the “acquaintance” who arranged this meeting?

To sum up, Trump Jr. apparently sees nothing wrong about colluding with Kremlin-connected Russian nationals to get damaging information about a political opponent, obtained by hacking US agencies.

The Washington Post has now identified the “acquaintance” who brokered this meeting:

He did not name the acquaintance, but in an interview Sunday, Rob Goldstone, a music publicist who is friendly with Donald Jr., told The Washington Post that he had arranged the meeting at request of a Russian client and had attended it along with Veselnitskaya.

Goldstone has been active with the Miss Universe pageant and works as a manager for Emin Agalarov, a Russian pop star whose father is a wealthy Moscow developer who sponsored the pageant in the Russian capital in 2013.

All righty then. So now the question is, who was Goldstone’s “Russian client?”

The father of Goldstone’s client Emin Agalorov is Russian billionaire Aras Agalarov, and he has previously attempted to set up meetings between Vladimir Putin and… you guessed it… Donald Trump.

Agalarov has served as a liaison between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. According to an interview, they once discussed the construction of a Trump Tower in Russia. Agalarov had also reportedly tried to set up a meeting between the two, but this was canceled due to Putin having to meet the Dutch royal couple at the time. Putin instead sent Trump a fedoskino miniature.

As of June 2017, he had an estimated net worth of US$1.91 billion, most of which is derived from his real estate ventures. In January 2017, Forbes listed him as the 51st richest Russian.

If the Russians hint that they have damaging information on Mrs. Clinton and they are willing to give it to you, you do not go and pick it up yourself! You send a patsy so you can deny you had anything to do with it when it comes out, and it will come out.

They make us take ethics classes at work for dealing with vendors, competitors, intellectual property, and international trade law.

If this were intellectual property of a competitor, the correct thing for Trump Jr. to do, as a business man, would be to say “no thank you” and report the meeting to his legal team. He instead chose the route he knew shouldn’t be taken.

Unethical and illegal from a business perspective. Treasonous from an electoral perspective.

There’s way too much invested in the current system to just la dee da, switch over and everything will be groovy!

Even if we forget the political problems - the GOP will fight TOOTH AND NAIL against this - there are massive current insurance systems set up that we’re not going to just wish into the cornfield.

Too many people don’t understand the difference between designing a system from scratch based on all current information vs trying to handle the real situation, where there is an existing system that may be imperfect, but totally upending it will lead to chaos in operation.

Even though almost all of the country has some level of medical facilities, there is going to be instances where a patient has to cross regional lines to get specific procedures performed - there’s a lot of the US that don’t have a Level I (or even Level II) Trauma Center for critical care, for example.

Sorry, you’re wrong. The POTUS is a civilian, period. One of the main tenets of the Executive Branch is CIVILIAN control of the military.

Now to make it even clearer, the tenet is made law under the Goldwater-Nichols Act. There are two civilians in the chain of command, before hitting the first military officer, the “combatant commander”.

I have 39 years experience as a Federal Employee. The FEHBP (Federal Employees Health Benefits Program) has two sets of benefit plans. One is offered nationwide (around half a dozen plans) and the other is state by state. You can freely move between plans during the open season. if you are in a HMO or PPP and an emergency occurs, your plan has to cover you if the facility has notified them within a 48 hour window.

Italy has a mixed system. Simplified, everyone gets free care for services listed in a “market basket” that is frequently changed (usually upgraded) as resources and technology permit. Individuals who want to go above the safety net can do it with private doctors, private funds, and IIRC, private insurance.

But that’s only because the Congress was in the hands of the Democrats who were willing to push the investigation. We are living in a very troubled time where the entire GOP is supporting a traitor and will not investigate because their base worships Trump and the GOP doesn’t have any ethics or moral principles.

OTOH Maybe I am just being too pessimistic and there will be House Republicans who do the right thing — but I wouldn’t bet on it.

We are living in a very troubled time where the entire GOP is supporting a traitor and will not investigate because their base worships Trump and the GOP doesn’t have any ethics or moral principles.

OTOH Maybe I am just being too pessimistic and there will be House Republicans who do the right thing — but I wouldn’t bet on it.

After nearly two years of Trump fiascos, the GOP is likely to be desperate by Midterm time next year: desperate to support the Yam, since by then he will have probably alienated all but the hardcore 30% of voters. Which, given the disgraceful level of voter apathy in this country, might normally be enough to win. But faced with a “blue wave” blowout (as might happen if we still had “normal”politics in the US), I think the Republicans are going to double down and go Full Trump Maniac: it’s probably going to be seen as either that, or losing control of Congress (and seeing those hundreds of millions of dollars in grift/graft go for naught)

In any case, I’m guessing 2018 sets new records for “ugly election” campaigning.

I should also note that I know many more people who died whilst waiting for an organ transplant, either for availability or insurance determination.
My oldest stepson was one of those who died much too young while waiting, waiting, waiting…and worrying about finances the entire time.

The flipside to that was that Bush was still relatively popular in 2004, and the same thing can’t be said for Trump. He’s really disliked by a lot of people right now, and there’s nothing I can see happening to change that. Certainly a 9/11 type event would not accrue to his advantage like it did Bush. The days of shaming people into being “patriotic” (read, nice to the GOP) are over.

That candidate will be just as disliked within 6 months, because that’s the power of the US media. There is no path to victory for a Democrat under those circumstances. And even if he or she should somehow win, Republicans will still have large majorities of both House and Senate.

I’ve long believed that some form of single payer health insurance is ultimately the best way to go. But these people who think we can just go there right now are living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. There’s way too much invested in the current system to just la dee da, switch over and everything will be groovy!

A similar society in California has been working to establish “Historical 6” markers on the legacy route CalTrans decommissioned in 1964.
