NYT: Trump Jr., Manafort and Kushner Met With Russian Lawyer After Being Promised Damaging Information on Clinton

The smell of corruption is getting overpowering
Politics • Views: 33,724

Yesterday the New York Times broke the news that despite his categorical denial that he ever met with Russian nationals during the Trump campaign, Donald Trump Jr. had in fact done so. The scientific term for Trump Jr.’s denial is “a lie.”

But today, the Times is bringing out more details about the meeting between Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, and now it looks even worse — because the meeting was set up because Trump Jr. expected Veselnitskaya to give him damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton before agreeing to meet with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign, according to three advisers to the White House briefed on the meeting and two others with knowledge of it.

The meeting was also attended by his campaign chairman at the time, Paul J. Manafort, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Mr. Manafort and Mr. Kushner only recently disclosed the meeting, though not its content, in confidential government documents described to The New York Times.

The Times reported the existence of the meeting on Saturday. But in subsequent interviews, the advisers and others revealed the motivation behind it.

The meeting — at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016, two weeks after Donald J. Trump clinched the Republican nomination — points to the central question in federal investigations of the Kremlin’s meddling in the presidential election: whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians. The accounts of the meeting represent the first public indication that at least some in the campaign were willing to accept Russian help.

The Times states that when Trump’s son was contacted yesterday and asked about the meeting, he said nothing about Hillary Clinton. And today, Trump Jr. released another statement in which he basically admits he expected to get negative info on Clinton:

In a statement on Sunday, Donald Trump Jr. said he had met with the Russian lawyer at the request of an acquaintance. “After pleasantries were exchanged,” he said, “the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”

A big question here: who was the “acquaintance” who arranged this meeting?

To sum up, Trump Jr. apparently sees nothing wrong about colluding with Kremlin-connected Russian nationals to get damaging information about a political opponent, obtained by hacking US agencies.

UPDATE at 7/9/17 5:42:45 pm by Charles Johnson

The Washington Post has now identified the “acquaintance” who brokered this meeting:

He did not name the acquaintance, but in an interview Sunday, Rob Goldstone, a music publicist who is friendly with Donald Jr., told The Washington Post that he had arranged the meeting at request of a Russian client and had attended it along with Veselnitskaya.

Goldstone has been active with the Miss Universe pageant and works as a manager for Emin Agalarov, a Russian pop star whose father is a wealthy Moscow developer who sponsored the pageant in the Russian capital in 2013.

All righty then. So now the question is, who was Goldstone’s “Russian client?”

And here’s the icing on this many-layered cake of subterfuge and potential treason:

UPDATE at 7/9/17 5:58:21 pm by Charles Johnson

The father of Goldstone’s client Emin Agalorov is Russian billionaire Aras Agalarov, and he has previously attempted to set up meetings between Vladimir Putin and… you guessed it… Donald Trump.

Agalarov has served as a liaison between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. According to an interview, they once discussed the construction of a Trump Tower in Russia. Agalarov had also reportedly tried to set up a meeting between the two, but this was canceled due to Putin having to meet the Dutch royal couple at the time. Putin instead sent Trump a fedoskino miniature.

As of June 2017, he had an estimated net worth of US$1.91 billion, most of which is derived from his real estate ventures. In January 2017, Forbes listed him as the 51st richest Russian.

UPDATE at 7/9/17 6:04:45 pm by Charles Johnson

Araz Agalarov was also mentioned in the infamous Steele Dossier:

He dared them to hack the DNC in the middle

What strikes me about this is how stupid the Trumpers are.

If the Russians hint that they have damaging information on Mrs. Clinton and they are willing to give it to you, you do not go and pick it up yourself! You send a patsy so you can deny you had anything to do with it when it comes out, and it will come out.

But nooooooo. They went themselves.

The Russians must have a hell of a time keeping a straight face around these amateurs.

This is getting good.

It is all starting to make me wonder who of the Trump clan gets sold down the river first? Will he burn any of his actual family? Or, will they all go down in a lump group under a RICO type deal?

How strong are all the family ties? We are going to find out. Would you trust Donny if he is your father-in-law…or even father?

And it continues to show how bad things are. With the trumps.and their stupid treasonous ways.
One of my acquaintances said meeting With a country about the election for information in said election is not treason.
I said meeting with a foreign power to go against the American people and government for power is. Ask Benedict arnold if you want a history lesson.
Same man who said the past is the past it should stay there.
Same man who drives around with a confederate flag thinking that the civil war is about states rights, and we live 10 minutes from the border of Canada in new York.

But the republicans love the power and clearly continue to show liberals as bad for america and that tjis is good. Idiots in power.

They make us take ethics classes at work for dealing with vendors, competitors, intellectual property, and international trade law.

If this were intellectual property of a competitor, the correct thing for Trump Jr. to do, as a business man, would be to say “no thank you” and report the meeting to his legal team. He instead chose the route he knew shouldn’t be taken.

Unethical and illegal from a business perspective. Treasonous from an electoral perspective.

Too many people don’t understand the difference between designing a system from scratch based on all current information vs trying to handle the real situation, where there is an existing system that may be imperfect, but totally upending it will lead to chaos in operation.

Donnie’s goose is cooked. The Trump people are left with denying that Trump knew anything about this meeting, but the known, stipulated facts are that Trump, Manafort, and Kushner met, in their official capacity as campaign representatives, with a Russian mob lawyer, for the explicit purpose of obtaining illegally acquired oppo files from an enemy of the U.S.

Then they spent months denying any connection at all until they got busted.

I’m wondering if a true hybridization of single-payer and private insurance companies would work. On one hand, the insurers get a guaranteed flow of income, but there would be a logistical issue of how regional coverages work. Even though almost all of the country has some level of medical facilities, there is going to be instances where a patient has to cross regional lines to get specific procedures performed - there’s a lot of the US that don’t have a Level I (or even Level II) Trauma Center for critical care, for example.

Sorry, you’re wrong. The POTUS is a civilian, period. One of the main tenets of the Executive Branch is CIVILIAN control of the military.

Now to make it even clearer, the tenet is made law under the Goldwater-Nichols Act. There are two civilians in the chain of command, before hitting the first military officer, the “combatant commander”.

I have 39 years experience as a Federal Employee. The FEHBP (Federal Employees Health Benefits Program) has two sets of benefit plans. One is offered nationwide (around half a dozen plans) and the other is state by state. You can freely move between plans during the open season. if you are in a HMO or PPP and an emergency occurs, your plan has to cover you if the facility has notified them within a 48 hour window.

re: #70 Big Beautiful Door

Fortunately Mueller can get indictments without Congressional approval, and the voters can vote the assholes out of office if they sit there and do nothing.

Well, they certainly “can”, but WILL they?

After nearly two years of Trump fiascos, the GOP is likely to be desperate by Midterm time next year: desperate to support the Yam, since by then he will have probably alienated all but the hardcore 30% of voters. Which, given the disgraceful level of voter apathy in this country, might normally be enough to win. But faced with a “blue wave” blowout (as might happen if we still had “normal”politics in the US), I think the Republicans are going to double down and go Full Trump Maniac: it’s probably going to be seen as either that, or losing control of Congress (and seeing those hundreds of millions of dollars in grift/graft go for naught)

In any case, I’m guessing 2018 sets new records for “ugly election” campaigning.

I agree. Unless he dies in office I expect Trump to be a two term president, no matter what he does or what happens.

I get the fear of that, but people said the same thing about Bush. These people are incompetent grifters who convinced a small number of apathetic morons to vote for him on a lark, or to vote third party. Most of the “NeverHillary” people I know are horrified by Trump and the GOP, and it’ll be vastly more difficult to sell the idea that whoever the Dems nominate is just like Trump or that Trump is “to the left” of her.

This is not mere corruption. This is Treason against the United States. Seeking hostile foreign influence upon a politcial rival over the better interests of our own country and its democratic process is direct Treason.

Let us remember that Putin and various Russian Generals and government officials have routinely threatened the United States both directly and indirectly with violence and nuclear attack during the past 10 years under Putin’s control. Russia has threatened our families, our government, and our population at large routinely and yet Trump and his minions sought out their help for various reasons, notably to damage a politcal rival in Clinton. This is Treason.

That isn’t going to happen. But no-one had to get an indictment against Nixon for his approval ratings to crash and him be forced out of office. If the Trump Administration is collapsing under the weight of indictments and the Congressional GOP does nothing, look for waves of Democrats elected in 2018 and 2020.

The difference is that the American people back then cared about crimes and impropriety in their President. The American people of today want an evil, narcissistic dictator to lead them, because liberals hate it.

Well, I was referring to the fear that Bush would refuse to vacate the office, but point taken. The flipside to that was that Bush was still relatively popular in 2004, and the same thing can’t be said for Trump. He’s really disliked by a lot of people right now, and there’s nothing I can see happening to change that. Certainly a 9/11 type event would not accrue to his advantage like it did Bush. A DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO THE G.O.P. INSIDERS ENABLING DONALD TRUMP
From Paul Ryan to John McCain, Sarah Ellison takes a look at the men—and the motives—that are propping up a Donald Trump presidency.

PROFILES IN COWARDICE
House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, Vice President Mike Pence, Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus.

Blame for the ongoing destruction wrought by the Trump administration will always attach to Donald Trump. But Trump cannot help himself. He is a pathogen, doing what pathogens do, and as surprised as anyone to have found himself replicating in the nation’s bloodstream. Equal blame will attach to a small group of experienced and seemingly rational politicians who knew exactly what Trump was like; who had cause to loathe and distrust him; who understood firsthand that he knew nothing about government and did not care to know anything; who could see clearly that he was dangerous, brutal, and corrupt; and who nonetheless decided, after occasional protests, to help him achieve and hold power. These are people who have been repeatedly belittled and mocked by Trump, who have sometimes been forced to voice their disgust at his words and actions, and who—for reasons that range from ambition and fear to denial and moral blindness—not only have declined to stand in his way but continue to prop him up. One or more of them may ultimately decide to defy him, but nothing will absolve them of the damage already done.

Worth the read.

He may be disliked, but there is no Democrat currently running against him. Once there is, that person will instantly become the most liberal Constitution-hating criminal ever. FOX will make every possible accusation against that person, typically accusing them of the same things that Trump actually does. The rest of the US news media will make FOX accusations headline news every day and debate them ad nauseum. That candidate will be just as disliked within 6 months, because that’s the power of the US media. There is no path to victory for a Democrat under those circumstances. And even if he or she should somehow win, Republicans will still have large majorities of both House and Senate.

I’ve long believed that some form of single payer health insurance is ultimately the best way to go. But these people who think we can just go there right now are living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. There’s way too much invested in the current system to just la dee da, switch over and everything will be groovy!

Even if we forget the political problems - the GOP will fight TOOTH AND NAIL against this - there are massive current insurance systems set up that we’re not going to just wish into the cornfield.

(Sorry to be coming in late to this)

There are so many middle class people who are comfortable with the current system, that changing it will be nigh impossible. That’s why Obamacare tweaked the setup. We like to think there would have only been a few defections (Nelson, Landrieu, Lieberman) if we’d gone too far, but I guarantee we would have been in the couple of dozen range had we tried to do something big enough that it led straight to single-payer.

That candidate will be just as disliked within 6 months, because that’s the power of the US media. There is no path to victory for a Democrat under those circumstances. And even if he or she should somehow win, Republicans will still have large majorities of both House and Senate.

You mean like they did with Obama?

He’s playing the vague word game. We’ve used civilian to mean anyone not working in a government agency. So, if you’re a cop, you’re not a civilian; if you’re a senator, you’re not a civilian. He’s blurring that distinction.

Ah, something like creationists blurring the definition of the word “theory.”

“Civilian” has also been weakened in the same way. However, “civilian control of the military” means exactly one thing: Those in charge of it are not in the military (and that is by design).

There is a Route 6 historical society in Ohio that has been putting up the hexagonal G.A.R. highway plates at many town and city borders.

A similar society in California has been working to establish “Historical 6” markers on the legacy route CalTrans decommissioned in 1964.
