Shock Waves Spread Through Washington After Trump Jr.’s Contacts With Russians Exposed

And Trump says nothing
Politics • Views: 30,999

We’re beginning to see the major repercussions from the New York Times’ pair of bombshell articles about Donald Trump Jr.’s undisclosed (and in fact, categorically denied) meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer.

Aaron Blake runs down a list of the many times Trump’s aides and surrogates have denied having any contacts with Russian nationals.

And now Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, says he’s going to question Trump Jr. and everyone else who was at that meeting.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said on CNN on Sunday that the meeting raises “a variety of questions” because Trump has denied having any kind of meetings like this.

“They claimed this meeting had nothing to do with the campaign, and yet the Trump campaign manager is invited to come to the meeting and there’s no reason for this Russian government advocate to be meeting with Paul Manafort or Mr. Kushner or the President’s son if it wasn’t about the campaign and Russia policy,” he said.

He said the meeting is indicative of the fact that Russia was “obviously” trying to “influence one of the candidates” and that the explanations given from the administration so far don’t “make sense.” He said his committee would like to “get to the bottom” of what happened at the meeting and he plans to question everyone who was at the meeting.

And with all this controversy swirling, Donald Trump himself has so far not said a single word in defense of his son. Which is very odd and uncharacteristic for him. Are they going to make Trump Jr. the fall guy in this sleazy story?

An interesting point: Don Jr. is not a government employee, particularly, not part of the executive branch. Therefore, he’s not covered by executive privilege.

“…At issue is a report from The Hill stating that more than half of the memos Comey wrote about his conversations with Trump were determined to contain classified material.
The report appeared to prompt a tweet from Trump, saying what Comey had done was “so illegal.”
No evidence has surfaced supporting that charge. Three of the memos were classified from the beginning, and were never shared with Richman, the professor tells NBC News.
Of the remaining four, a small portion — much less than half — has been retroactively deemed classified, said a Congressional source familiar with the matter.
The retroactive classification may lead to criticism of Comey, since that was exactly the process that stung Hillary Clinton during the campaign.

Ugh, words fail me. (Almost)

Tories ‘urgently investigating’ after MP uses N-word at public event

What’s amazing to me is when you look at the actual quote, the use of the N-word is completely ridiculous, without any rhyme or reason. It’s an archaic turn of phrase, which has- for obvious reasons- fallen out of use, and plenty of other contemporary phrases have supplanted it, all of which would make more sense to todays audience. Yet, the MP went with:

“Now I’m sure there will be many people who’ll challenge that, but my response and my request is look at the detail, it isn’t all doom and gloom,” she said in the recording made by Huffington Post. “Now we get to the real n***** in the woodpile, which is, in two years what happens if there is no deal?”

That’s not just grossly offensive, it’s senselessly, stupidly, and anachronistically offensive.

That Trump continues to survive the facts that show he is unfit for office has disgusted me beyond my ability to express it. There is no way this nation can survive this so-called-presidency much longer. The power of this nation to lead is already greatly diminished. What a horrible president, what a horrible administration, and what a horrible family of dishonest, corrupt, greedy hustlers.

We are not in civil war territory. We will survive this. Yes, we will be a changed nation, and it’s sad that so many people either decided it was OK or didn’t care, but maybe part of the change will be an understanding of what we did.

Unfortunately, Republicans on that committee will make sure that Schiff’s words are in vain. Mueller may get to the bottom of what happened at that meeting and numerous others so I’m hoping his investigation is thorough and quick. We need to get these people out of power ASAP.

But it was still only 46%, a lower percentage than Romney got. The real key to Trump’s victory was turning Clinton toxic enough that a lot of Obama voters either didn’t vote or voted for Trump or Johnson or Stein.

That’s why we have to support the process, involving Mueller, even if its pace seems slow. Mueller’s going to have to meet beyond-a-reasonable-doubt standard, but, if he can (and I think he will with this crime family), it will reverberate through the GOP.

“…It does not help their case that you have a very specific operational instance where the campaign decided it was prepared to welcome assistance from a Russian source,” said [Bob] Bauer, who has previously argued in a series of posts that the law prohibits cooperation with foreign nationals to influence a U.S. election. “You are not permitted to solicit or accept anything of value from a foreign national to influence an election. You cannot enter into a conspiracy with a foreign national to influence an election.”

That’s true. Honestly and it does suck but a lot of people were wrongly convinced that Clinton was as bad if not worse than Trump. I think it will be harder to do that in 2020. But it will also be tougher in a way too since Trump will have incumbency.

lawhawk  Jul 10, 2017 • 11:35:08am

We are so far past coincidences here.

Sessions lied about meeting with Kislyak under oath (he forgot?!).
Flynn lied (about all his foreign contacts, being a foreign agent, etc.)
Kushner lied about meetings with Russians (multiple times) and yet he’s still got his clearance.
Donny Jr. lied about meeting with Russians - the purpose for the meeting, and tries retconning why - all while throwing Manafort and Kushner under the bus by confirming their presence at the meeting.

Manafort - lied about meetings/foreign agent.

All these people lied about the same key activity: meetings with Russians and working for foreign governments as a foreign agent.

This is not normal. This is so fucking abnormal.

Trump continues to think he hasn’t done anything wrong, all while lying his ass off and watching all those around him get wrapped in knots of their own doing because they continue lying about meetings. No good is coming from this, but this latest set of revelations from Donny Jr shows that they went so far beyond merely being witnesses to criminality to actively participating in criminal acts.

Donny Jr, Manafort, and Kushner were at a meeting where they though they’d get dirt on Hillary courtesy of the Russians. That they didn’t get any info doesn’t absolve them of criminality. The intent to commit crimes - sedition, conspiracy, etc., was present, and that they didn’t get the dirt they sought is immaterial.

Russia continues playing Trump and his cronies, and Trump’s people don’t think there’s anything wrong with what they did. They need to be disabused of this notion, and the prosecutors, including Mueller, are gathering all the evidence. Every passing day brings new details and reporting that help goes to building a criminal case against all those involved.

Next up? Jr. lawyering up.

Um, from what I recall the intelligence agencies did not get Iraq’s possession of weapons of mass destruction wrong. They said Iraq didn’t have them.

Even the Bushies didn’t actually say Saddam had WMD. They just strongly implied it and repeated those implications often enough that people believed there was gonna be mushroom clouds over the US if Iraq wasn’t conquered right now.

So, yeah, I trust the intelligence agencies.

Putin will not be weakened by this. He will celebrate it as a triumph over America.

That’s what makes direct action in retaliation important. Crucial. We must be ready to trade some blows, and I don’t mean war. I mean cyber, economic sanctions, diplos expelled that sort of thing. Weather the blowback and damages, then re approach

Just checked the logs and discovered a WHOLE LOT of people granting access to our Twitter client today, all of them with Iranian names. And here’s why: they’re all retweeting this article by our continual Iranian MEK-linked spammer: littlegreenfootballs.com

Giving some serious consideration to whether I should suspend this account. It’s not an easy issue because on one level I kind of agree with what they’re posting — the Iranian regime really is an oppressive authoritarian theocracy. But on the other hand, the MEK are not good people either, and mixed in with these articles are links to far right Islamophobic sites like Gatestone.

Anyone have an opinion on whether I should shut down these accounts? There are actually several of them, and they never engage with other LGF users. They’re basically just using LGF Pages to promote their cause.

Top Trump advisors don’t casually drop incredibly damaging information about the President’s son for no reason. You do that to get ahead of something bigger.

In the discussion of who the leaker(s) in the White House could be earlier, I posited that the FBI could have a mole in the White House - someone so close to Trump that no one would ever think of suspecting whoever it is. I’ve been thinking about it, and while I can’t venture a guess as to who it could be, I have some thoughts on how they could be operating.

For argument’s sake, let’s say a close Trump associate (maybe even someone who was with Trump before his presidential run) was turned by the FBI a long time ago, maybe in the course of an entirely different invesigation (Bharara’s money laundering case, maybe). Maybe a bodyguard, someone in his trusted inner circle. And this guy is trusted enough to go around the White House and pick up bits of conversation here and there.

What would stop him from leaking to the media and purposely telling the NYT or WaPo to write into their stories that instead of the leaks coming from one person, they publish that three advisors or five advisors or two advisors confirmed the story? It would serve a crucial purpose - it would make the White House look leakier than it really is, and it would serve to make the already-paranoid Trump cabal even more edgy. Before long, no one would trust anyone. That looks like it’s happening already. Trump’s people are chewing up their time looking for leakers who may not even actually exist.

It might seem far-fetched, but as crazy as this story has gotten and given the levels of distrust engendered by Trump himself, it’s actually plausible.

What if all this noise is being generated by one person? It could happen, and it would be a subtle psy-op that would put even more pressure on a White House staff that could be under too much pressure already to notice.

Just spitballing here.
