The Bombshells Continue to Drop: Trump Jr. Was Told the Russian Government Wanted to Aid Trump’s Candidacy

Trump Jr. knew the Russian government was behind this
Politics • Views: 32,331

Now we know why Donald Trump Jr. lawyered up today. The New York Times is apparently following the Breitbart method of releasing progressive bombshell stories that build on the previous bombshells — except that unlike Breitbart, these bombshells are the real deal: Russian Government Sought to Aid Trump’s Candidacy, According to Email.

WASHINGTON — Before arranging a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him compromising information about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy, according to three people with knowledge of the email.

The email to the younger Mr. Trump was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped broker the June 2016 meeting. In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Trump acknowledged that he was interested in receiving damaging information about Mrs. Clinton, but gave no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy.

Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information.

Does anyone really believe Trump Jr. didn’t tell his father about this meeting, that was supposedly going to help his campaign?

The number of times that the Times and the WashPo report these things from multiple sources is astonishing. It’s like a goddam knife fight in this Administration.

No, but if he DIDN’T tell him, it was to provide plausible deniability, and that means he knows it was bad.

I can see them leaving Don Jr. wrapped in a carpet over this one.

I have been wondering if one of the kids would be exposed to have been a careless player…I had thought it would be Jared because of his hubris and his special relationship (I think Trump sees him as the ‘smart son’ he never had)…But Don Jr…I imagined him as just the jocko bully at boarding school who was happy so long as he got to have his annual safaris…Maybe he was trying to show dad he could be of use.

You know, I get the feeling that after last week’s tongue bath from Trump, Putin will be perfectly happy to watch the whole Trump Administration implode, give how much damage he’s already inflicted on us. The impeachment will tear the US apart, which is more than he could have hoped for. We may be mad at Russia afterwards, but it’s hard to imagine us getting unified over anything.

“He said, ‘I’m told she has information about illegal campaign contributions to the D.N.C.,’” Mr. Goldstone recalled, referring to the Democratic National Committee. He said he then emailed Donald Jr., outlining what the lawyer purported to have.

That’s not what Fredo said in his statement last night. He said he had no idea why the lawyer was even there.

I’m pretty sure that violate an arrangement between China and the USA, at least.

I can tell you from personal experience that re-applying for a work visa each year in China is a royal PITA. It’s like you’re constantly on probation. Students don’t want to go through that kind of BS. An undergraduate expects a visa to last four years, a master’s candidate two years, and a PhD at least two years. It’s like the administration wants to send all the bright students to Canada and the UK.

Kevin Drum:

“…The crazy thing is that someone—or multiple someones—really has it in for Junior. They’ve been releasing information to the New York Times in very, very carefully staged tidbits designed to (a) get Don Jr. to lie on the record, and (b) keep the story going. At this point, Don Jr. has no idea what evidence these folks have, so he has no idea what it’s safe to lie about.”

Back when I was a teenager in the 1970s, I used to read political potboilers. You know, Allen Drury, “Advise and Consent” and so on. One of the later novels in the series is called “Come Nineveh, Come Tyre” and depicts a weak president being sucked into the Soviet orbit. The end of the novel has the weak president standing with the Russian premier, watching as the combined American and Soviet flag flap from flagpoles all around Washington.

Of course, Drury had it absolutely WRONG as to the source of the weakness—he thought it would be “leftists.” And, obviously, we’re not in the era of the Soviets, but in that of Russian plutocrats. But these last several months, every time something comes up about the Russians, I think back to that potboiler and wonder if Drury was more right than he knew?

Next year, with this crashing down, Democrats need to partially challenge every Republican on how they coordinated with the Russians. They can’t make it the majority of their campaign, but selling out the country - for tax cuts for the wealthy - needs to be a message.

With the cracks showing in the Grand Old Party from the infighting in the ongoing healthcare mucking about…adding in something like Drudge having to point out the reality of the email notice can really be an accelerant to the oncoming explosion.

I think all of this will start breaking the party into groups fighting over what to do about and with Trump. It is just a natural process of politics in crisis. Butt saving can lead people into all kinds of directions. It sure is going to mess up their legislative process with Trump.

Today has been a good day.

Ultimately, I do too. I know this is probably going to sound weird, but I think this needs to play out a bit longer, and not collapse all at once. Two things need to come out of this:
1. The GOP needs to be punished by people finally figuring out that the party would have sold the country for the wealthy.
2. The media needs to break with the idea that they need to be friends with politicians in order to do their jobs. There are more and more that are getting that, and as I see NYT and WaPo competing for scoops, I’m seriously encouraged, but too many news orgs have lazy “reporters” that amount to no more than reporting on the headlines of others. NYT, WaPo, CNN, etc., need to get to a point where they kick these people to the curb.

Edit: And by number 1, I mean it has to get to the point where some people go “what the fuck have I been voting for all these years?”

When push comes to shove, the GOP pols will opt for saving themselves. If they can use Trump and there are few negative consequences of doing so, they’ll remain on board the Trump Express, but on the other hand, when the really stinky sh*t hits the fan, they’ll be forced to choose between him and themselves, and they’ll opt for saving their seats in Congress. I don’t think Trump realizes that there’s a limit to the degree to which many GOPer pols are willing to sacrifice themselves on his behalf. It’s going to take time to reach that point, but when/if it does come, I don’t expect any GOPers in Congress to sacrifice their political careers for him.

There are a couple problems there. First, the GOP will never, ever turn on Trump — partly because they’re just utterly craven motherfuckers, and partly because of the second point — the base, which the GOP absolutely relies on, is a billion percent in the bag for Trump. It won’t do any good to get rid of Trump when a third of the nation is composed of nihilist sociopaths who see nothing wrong with shooting kindergarteners and crooked cops who’ve been champing at the bit to go full Gestapo.

I read earlier today that citizens in some states are raising a ruckus with secretaries of state about having their personal data released to Kobach & Co. I also read that Kobach/Trump has asked J. Christopher Adams to join the commission. This is just what is not needed to gin up examples of non-existent voter fraud—- a guy who ruined his career at the DOJ by lying and manufacturing BS, paired with another guy a judge recently fined for his dishonesty in a voter fraud case who is also known for peddling self-serving BS.

Maybe I have a very fast-acting cynical mind but I keep thinking “HOW IS THIS A SURPRISE??? REALLY?” and I’m a bit stumped how it’s taken A YEAR for this to drag out to the point where direct evidence is apparently being made public soon.

In a sane world, the absolute minute it was announced that Putin’s bag man in the Ukraine was Moscow Donny’s campaign manager, there should have been an APB/BOLO for Russian-based information-warfare skull-fuckery. Our entire intel community should have been lit up like a goddamned pinball machine. I thought so at the time, surely more important people than I did as well?

File all of this under NO DUH, EINSTEINS.

Anyway… Let’s all kick back and watch the Republicans hand-wave this away as nothing worth doing anything about, because The Russian Unknown Millions Protector is a meal ticket for the GOP Death-genda and at this point Putin could sit in the White House, put his feet up, and take a piss in the corner of the Oval Office, and these traitorous pieces of shit masquerading as a “Congress” would just giggle and count their benefactor’s tax cuts.

I guess so. Bureaucratic inertia, people’s basic faith that they’re not being lied to, general ignorance, and conflict aversion - all are potent action-retardants.

PutinCo has played a game that’s run fifty times longer than the average American’s political attention span, and they’ve played it so well that Putin goes on TV and tells his subsidiary “Donski, is no problem. Go to media and say, repeat after me: So Fucking What?” right there in public and nearly the entire Legislative branch just does goddamned nothing.

Is there anyone in the Trump admin who isn’t corrupt as fuck?

Rick Perry. //

The guy heading the VA.

In addition to it being laughable that Trump didn’t know what Jr was up to… like Manafort and Kushner would go to some meeting from some unknown person saying ‘I got dirt’ without more specific information on content… or they knew the person was highly probably to have something of value.

There’s no way out of this.

Right! They would’ve been in that other meeting at the tower with Cheeto and Reince.

I suspect Dana’s first thoughts were “Brown, black, black, Mooslim” even though the first person on the list is white. But what’s a few deaths to get in the way of profit.

So….
Either Pence knew about most of this
OR
Pence is a ham sandwich.
Surely this inspires confidence!
Or something.

Tech thing: I have an Ubuntu box that I ran a cable to just because I didn’t have wifi installed on it. After moving some routers around, I decided it was time to cut the cord. I bought a Belkin N300 Wifi USB adapter for $9.99 at Amazon, followed these instructions, ubuntuforums.org, and had wifi in about 3 minutes.

I have a Belkin router, and it is awesome. Glad you found one at such a great price because I paid more for mine.

I think he’s about as concerned about the GOP anymore as Charles is. That doesn’t mean he isn’t a conservative with whom I disagree on many levels…

I read the quote as sarcasm.

re: #20 Blind Frog Belly White

Then we get Paul Ryan. Then Hatch.

It’s turtles assholes all the way down.

as i’ve said before, that’s fine. if the PeeTUS and the VPget taken out, no legislation will possibly move through congress, and it will nuke the gop for at least a generation. Having one set of P/VP forced to resign might be viewed as tragic. Having the second set resign will strike people as carelessness.
