Breaking: Rep. Brad Sherman Introduces Articles of Impeachment for Trump

Obstruction of justice
Politics • Views: 33,042

There it is. Today Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA) introduced Articles of Impeachment in the House of Representatives, seeking to remove Donald Trump from office for obstruction of justice in his actions impeding the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s contacts with Russia.

Here’s the document introduced by Sherman, co-sponsored by Texas Rep. Al Green.

Sorry to go off topic so soon, but some segments of white Evangelical Christianity are going berserk today: Eugene Peterson, the paraphraser of “The Message” Bible, a retired pastor and theology professor, says he’s changed his mind on gay marriage and would now perform one. Peterson is now 84 and is apparently giving no fucks anymore.

religionnews.com

As you might expect, other Evangelicals are basically writing him off, kicking him out of the club, condemning him to hell and so on and so forth. It will be interesting to see if the big Evangelical publisher NavPress dumps “The Message” Bible, or if any of the big Evangelical chains (like Lifeway, owned by the Southern Baptist Convention) does the same.

Unless and until multiple Republicans are willing to sponsor and/or co-sponsor articles of impeachment, this is just grandstanding. As I mentioned the other day, we need at least 24 House Republicans to get behind impeachment for it to pass.

It doesn’t strike me as a wise move to file a single article of impeachment. That’s the value in waiting until the various investigations are done. It’s highly likely that there will be multiple grounds for impeachment. And any good plaintiff’s lawyer or prosecutor will tell you, the more causes of action you can state, the better your chances of winning.

Gentle reminder.
Investigations take time. Investigations into a corrupt regime and multiple criminal acts of a cabal/syndicate such as Trump operates takes time to break down into the component parts and identify the individuals involved at each step.

Every day we learn new acts of criminality - including those that the investigators were unaware of. That opens up still new avenues for investigation.

Mueller wont release any report - identifying people to prosecute - until he’s good and ready, and that’s not likely to be for some time to come.

With the staggering amount of corruption involved here, he doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned, such as perhaps leaving Pence out when he’s up to his eyeballs in wrongdoing as well. Or leaving Ivanka out when she’s also included in the loop on emails and other communications.

There’s no way to short cut the investigation. It will be complete when it’s ready.

Of course, Pence is there waiting in the wings for a moment of comedy:

Of course, Rep.Sherman’s impeachment resolution - however well-crafted - is going to go nowhere fast - very fast. But that probably isn’t the point: said point being that being the first Congressman to bring up the I-word in any sort of serious context (and sorry, folks: blogs don’t count) - is something of a no-lose situation: at worst he’s dismissable as a crank (like Rep. Walter Jones of NC - still in the House btw - and his crusade against GWB’s Iraq policy): at best, he’s a Prophet Before His Time. Hopefully, minus the martyrdom…

That’s pretty much the perspective taken here: Voting Off the Apprentice President

Of course, impeachment efforts face a similar hurdle, and GOP resistance will, if anything, be even more fierce. But if the Democrats take back the House in 2018, it’s a new ball game. And even if they don’t, a drive to impeach Trump could produce significant political benefits for the left. A well-organized impeachment movement would shine a spotlight on Trump’s outrageously corrupt actions and demand that Congress take action. This would weaken not only Trump himself but also the entire GOP: Republican lawmakers would be forced to choose between remaining loyal to a widely despised president or distancing themselves from him and risking the wrath of Trump’s ferociously loyal base. Yes, Trump’s massive unpopularity is already trashing the Republican brand, even absent a credible threat of impeachment. But a strong impeachment movement would turn the political pressure up to eleven.

It was about ten and a half months from Clinton’s second inauguration to articles of impeachment being filed against him. And about 4 months after Nixon’s second inauguration that articles of impeachment were drafted against him. Even talk of impeachment of Obama wasn’t until March 2012.

All info per wikipedia.

Aside from the investigation being far from over and wanting the GOP to be the ones who first filed, the other reason I didn’t want to see impeachment brought up this early is I know that the GOP is going to now make this a campaign issue next year. “Vote for us to keep Trump in office!” will be the rally cry and the base will respond. At the same time a lot of the people who might otherwise have supported the DNC against Trump will not want to vote for what they will be 1-2 years of impeachment proceedings and little getting done.

I’m not sure “keep Trump in office” will be a winner as a campaign issue. People who voted for Trump because they believed his promises about health care and jobs won’t have either, and will be disillusioned. Sure, the die-hards will still be there, but they would be anyway.

While that wall gets built…
Skeleton Crew
Season starts with shrimp boats lacking workers

“…He didn’t mince words when citing the difficulties the fleet faces this year, namely, a dire shortage of workers from Mexico.

The situation is caused by the failure of Congress to renew the H-2B Returning Worker Program, leaving boat owners and shrimp processors in a lurch. Andrea Hance, executive director of the Texas Shrimp Association, said as much as 20 percent of the Brownsville-Port Isabel fleet will stay tied up rather than heading out for the new season, which starts July 15.
Many boats that do go out will do so with skeleton crews, which means they won’t be able to handle as many shrimp. Adding insult to injury is the fact that this season is projected to be the best in years, Hance said.

“All the indicators show, with low fuel prices, there’s an abundance of shrimp out there and the prices have remained fairly stable,” she said. “This was going to be our year.”

A shortage of crew members also means boats won’t be able to head as many of the shrimp they do catch, which decreases the value. Head-on shrimp is worth about $2 less a pound at the dock than headless, Hance said.

The industry is fighting a misperception that it would rather hire Mexican H-2B visa workers than U.S. workers because they’re cheaper, Hance said, though the truth is that finding Americans to crew shrimp boats is practically impossible despite the industry’s best efforts. brownsvilleherald.com

The shrimp industry has a substantial impact on the Texas economy, though nothing on the magnitude of the cattle industry, for instance, thus it’s hard to get lawmakers’ attention, she said. An exception is state Rep. Rene Oliveira, D-Brownsville, who was among the speakers at Monday’s blessing ceremony and blamed the visa situation on “failed policies in Washington.” Hamstringing the Texas shrimp industry just further hands the advantage to foreign shrimp producers, he said.

The ones suffering aren’t the Republicans.

This detail about American workers, though.

The few who do respond to want ads rarely come back after the first day. Those who make it through training and head out to the Gulf on a boat more often than not have to be brought back in a matter of days. Crewing a shrimp trawler is hard, dangerous work, Hance said.

“When we put an inexperienced person on this boat, there’s probably about a 95-percent chance that person will quit in the first week, so you’re asking that boat owner to turn the boat around, use the fuel to get back,” she said. “It costs the boat owner and the crew because they’re not able to fish.”

Inexperienced crew members are also a big liability for boat owners, which is another reason many are choosing to leave their vessels in port, to avoid the risk, Hance said. The Mexican H-2B workers, in contrast, usually know their way around a shrimp boat by the time they get here, she said.

The historical footnote I find most interesting is that the Tyler impeachment was led by former President John Quincy Adams who was at that point serving in the House. I honestly couldn’t imagine a scenario in modern politics where a retired president ran for office again. Then again, if Jerry Brown would have won in 1992, I could definitely see him deciding to get back into politics like he did.

The Littoral Combat Ship Is A Disaster And This Is The Solution

This week the U.S. Navy published details on what it’s after for its next surface combatant, the FFG(X), or guided missile frigate. This move is designed to shift away from the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) originally envisioned to perform many different tasks and afford the Navy greater flexibility in operations. But the reality that’s emerged is that the LCS really can’t survive most combat scenarios, so here’s what the service needs now.

[…]

Most of the reasons given recently by the Navy and the Trump administration for continuing production of the failed LCS program was to keep the shipyards that build it working, thus keeping the skilled workforce in place so when the new frigate design was ready for production, it would be smooth sailing for the new warship.

As discussed on the previous thread, once again taxpayers are being fleeced to keep the War Machine funded. But, let’s not provide health care for our fellow citizens….

The Littoral Combat Ship Is A Disaster And This Is The Solution

As discussed on the previous thread, once again taxpayers are being fleeced to keep the War Machine funded. But, let’s not provide health care for our fellow citizens….

Part of the problem was that the LCS project was supposed to settle upon a single design and go with that, but the Navy (or, rather their Congressional allies) argued that building both designs would be “good” because it would keep the respective shipyards working. So it doesn’t surprise me in the least that they’re arguing to continue production while the FFG(X) program drags along to designing a replacement.

The Supreme Court justice would be the most impracticable, I think. There’d have to be a long time between presidency and seat at the bar to avoid potential conflicts and recusals. And by that point, the nominee would probably be too old.

Then again, there were rumors Huntsman was considering a run in California for either governor or the Senate. But that’s mostly fizzled out. It’s also been an incredibly long time since someone held office in two different states, I would think.

I think the failure to down-select, as planned, to one class of ship originally wasn’t about keeping shipyards working. Decision to build prototypes of both ships to trail against each other (not typically done with big ass warships) was due to seeing the potential of the trimaran Independence- class, but being risk averse.
If someone had had the gnads to choose one design before building, which is normal, the program would be years ahead now.
Also, the programs biggest problems has been developing the “mission modules”.
The typical problem with US arms procurement, striving for the “leap ahead” technology.

Way to soon. Should have waited for Mueller’s investigation and final report.

And for Trump and company to continue to subvert the country for Russia?

Sign me up as a “nope.” Trump has already admitted to the items in the impeachment filing. Gets every Republican on record where they stand.

Moreover, the GOP has got to be stinging over last night’s Oklahoma special elections, the elections in NH and NY that also flipped seats, and the close races in MT, GA, and KS. They can’t afford to spend money like they did in the national congressional races.

Oklahoma in particular had zero precincts: NONE, that went for Obama in 2008 and 2012. There is the House of Delegates election in Virginia this year, along with VA and NJ governor.

The longer the corruption and suspected espionage continues, the more damage to the Republic. Let the GOP try to defend this.

This is a result of the complete alternate world that conservative cult media has created for its followers. They are only barely able to communicate with the rest of the species. They speak only in allegory, using words that have little meaning to the rest of us, but which communicate whole tracts to each other, because they all understand the same common mythology.

‘Clintons’ is a bad word, therefore they use it. Roughly translated, it means ‘an evil conspiracy against the pure of heart’ in this context. It’s difficult to translate into normal human speech.

Conservative cultists have become the Tamarians of Star Trek, communicating only in allegory and metaphor. Their phrases mean nothing to us, but we don’t share a common mythology - we don’t live in the same universe.

Ayep, pretty much every 80s-era weapon procurement program that planned to “leap ahead” has turned into a bloated, problem-plagued mess. Difference is that the Navy and Air Force have the weight in Congress to get their programs pushed forward, while the Army and Marines have gotten fucked at both ends.

Its a political statement that obstructing justice is a BFD. If the Democrats gain control of the House in 2018, they can amend it to add all the new charges resulting from Mueller’s investigation.

I know some Berners that say Clinton and Obama are both neocons and the whole North Korea mess is both of their faults.

Well, after I ran into the Bernie Bro in the wild who called me an imperialistic warmongering neo-liberal shill… . (I challenged the person if he knew what those words actually meant, and he did not respond).

My wife the former Libertarian was called a neo-conservative neo-liberal communist yesterday. (Those don’t even go together.)

Most obviously, we have Donald Trump Jr., who received an email from an acquaintance asking explicitly whether he’d be interested in the Russian government’s help in the campaign, and instead of responding, “Please don’t contact me again” and informing the FBI, he said, “If it’s what you say I love it” and forwarded the email on to his father’s closest adviser (also his brother-in-law, Jared Kushner) and the campaign’s chairman, who apparently both had the same response.

re: #143 Dr. Matt

Trump: “And from day one I want fracking and everything else to get energy prices low and to create tremendous energy,” he said during the interview. “We’re going to be self-supporting, we just about are now. We’re going to be exporting energy - he doesn’t want that. He would like Hillary where she wants to have windmills. He would much rather have that because energy prices would go up and Russia as you know relies very much on energy.”

Incomprehensible rambling from Trump who sputters and lacks any rational sense.

We’re going to be self-supporting. Okay. Sounds promising. Tell me more.

We are just about are now. So, Obama’s energy policy didn’t screw America, but we’re close to energy independence? Gotcha

We’re going to be exporting energy. We are now dumbass. The EIA has these statistics and stuff that’s widely available. Usage/import/export. All of it. None of your idiotic advisers bothers with these details, because you don’t have any use for them.

He doesn’t want that. I’m assuming that’s a Putin reference, but who the heck knows.

He would like Hillary where she wants to have windmills. Clinton said she wants to make more alt-energy, to lessen reliance on foreign oil (and oil generally). Higher oil prices help nations like KSA and Russia and oligarchs like Putin. Higher oil prices also incentivize countries to develop alt-energy and shift from oil to cheaper/more reliable energy sources like nat gas and even invest in wind, solar, nuclear, etc.

He would much rather have that because energy prices would go up and Russia as you know relies very much on energy. This is the opposite outcome from the preceding sentence. More alt energy investment means less reliance on oil, which means oil price drops due to lower demand. For someone who claimed to go to Wharton, you really don’t get basic supply/demand.

From that article:

And at the moment of its greatest peril (so far anyway), Trump’s White House descends into disarray, backstabbing and outright terror as staffers start to lawyer up and wonder how they’re going to escape their current employment without being publicly disgraced (at a minimum). As The Post reports:

The White House has been thrust into chaos after days of ever-worsening revelations about a meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a lawyer characterized as representing the Russian government, as the president fumes against his enemies and senior aides circle one another with suspicion, according to top White House officials and outside advisers.

At this point, you have got to think there are moles in the WH that are in talks with the FBI. Someone wanting to escape not just current employment but lawyer fees and possible jail. Someone there is going to be talking to the Mueller team. Has to be.

That’s kind of irrelevant here because the charges for an impeachment don’t matter. The only thing that matters are the vote counts in the House and Senate.

Not really, though. You need 67 votes on at least one charge for impeachment. So if you have 5 articles of impeachment, that gives you five chances to get 67 votes. For example, you might not get there on Obstruction of Justice, but you could get there on Abuse of Power or Dereliction of Duty.

But this is treating impeachment as if it were a normal legal proceeding where things like facts matter to the jury or judge. Not so in Congress.

There will be no impeachment without Republican votes, and those votes aren’t going to be swayed by any evidence presented in Congress. How impeachment looks politically in their home state or district will be the only thing that can cause Republicans to break ranks.

Awww crap. Reading this thread catching up and my damn Super-Max internet lie detector just blew up from all the Trump lies about.

It can only handle so many lies at one time and apparently it reached max tried to count more and just got hot, started to smoke and then it died. I’ve had it around since GW and it got some pretty high counts, but was always able to handle ‘em.

Looks like I need a bigger model. I’m looking at the Max-a-Million model. They claim they have never had one break yet…but I don’t know.

They’re gonna need to make a major upgrade for Trump and the firehose of bullshit he spews on a minute-to-minute basis.

I am really loving these two sentences. They feel like they came from a genteel memoir of an insane life.

Small dogs often have a sense of self-worth out of proportion with their size (we had a Westie when I was young; that dog would run straight at any other dog and finally caught hell from a German Shepard). The dachshund took any chair or table as his personal burrow and if our feet drifted into his zone he took it as a personal affront. He bit my wife twice but never caught me. Not for lack of trying. When my wife was in her final months of pregnancy, though, he followed her everywhere and stuck near her and the baby. Overall, he was a wonderful character.

When my wife worked for Microsoft, she was often in contact with people at Kaspersky. I showed he the news story from last week alleging they were tied to KSB, and she said she’d reach out to her primary contact there about it.

She never heard back. The company may have locked down any info getting out

I don’t know what to make of this, but it’s kind of interesting.

From November 2014 through January 2015, five months before he announced his bid for the Presidency, Donald Trump fired off nine weird tweets to two Russian accounts about running for President. And this, as far as I can tell, hasn’t been reported anywhere.

All these tweets are still live. At least for now. You can read them here; just search “Russia” and scroll down. Two of the accounts were @VladimirRussia7 and @russiannavyblog, and they’ve since been deactivated, and I believe @russiannavyblog deleted his account last night, after I first retweeted his Trump tweets. I’m close to certain he’s ex-CIA, but more on that in a little. Anyway, those handles are dead, but the tagged accounts on some of these tweets are still active, including one apparently belonging to a British medical journalist and human rights activist Dr. Rita Pal; someone with the handle @russia890; and, of course, @monkiekaty.

re: #155 Big Beautiful Door

Its a political statement that obstructing justice is a BFD.

I agree with the need to make the statement and I’m glad someone finally took this step. If anything, it isn’t soon enough — it should have happened right after Trump fired Comey and said he was doing it to obstruct the Russia investigation.

My only complaint about it is that, given that it was a political statement, the text itself is almost entirely legalistic. In particular, it only uses terms like “obstructed .. a federal investigation” into “Russian state interference” and “possible collusion”. I would have liked to have seen a more political argument: that this was aiding and abetting Watergate-like crimes (stealing private information) by a foreign government. And that allowing this would lead to the end of American democracy, replacing it with an authoritarian state that calls on foreign allies to quash opponents with further criminal actions.

Yeah, usually it’s supposed to automatically do it when the lease expires on the IP address. If the service that scans the lease expiration is shut off (or if the system clock is acting wonky), the lease may fail to expire on the client computer, but the server still tries to talk to a new IP address.
