I saw them at Red Rocks when they released La Cucaracha. They played like 30 songs, but I could tell that Gener just wasn’t into it, he’d saunter behind the band and sit down on Stage Rock and smoke for whole songs, did that more than a few times. During their hiatus Aaron came to the little mountain town next to where I live and played a free show in the park, he mostly did Billy Joel covers.
Have you heard Gener’s Ween set he did with Umphrey’s McGee at Summercamp? That’s what got the ball rolling, IMHO, for the band to get back together, that was the most fun the man had playing music in years, you could tell in the performance.

I got out of Texas partly because the inmates have taken over the asylum under Reverend Howlin’ Mad Abbott, so politically this doesn’t surprise me.
I have to say, though, that I didn’t think anybody even lived in that building. I passed it many times going to Penderey’s spices and “decrepitude” was the vibe. In my mind it was the biggest building on the westernmost end of the east-to-west-running Shit Belt between 20 and 30.

I’ve seen Ween in a lot of places. One of my favorites was in Vail at the 8150 in 1999ish. When they played Voodoo Lady the whole place started jumping, and all the mike stands on stage started swaying, and you could see all the band members making eye contact like WTF?

In addition to seeing Jupiter and Saturn, I found globular cluster M70, and then looked up what that meant. It’s a group of stars in orbit around the Milky Way, about 35K light years from earth.

Harvard Faculty Move to Ban Frats and Sororities, Calling Their Effects “Heartbreaking”
Whatever goes on during hazing week (or punch week, or whatever)-followed by heavy underage drinking every other week-may be exiled from Harvard’s premises. This morning, a committee of Harvard faculty members recommended that, starting in 2018, the college forbids incoming students from joining “fraternities, sororities, and similar organizations.”
In a 22-page report on The Harvard Crimson, the committee states that, though the college has already moved to get rid of gender-exclusive student groups, the culture of abuse at USGSOs (“Unrecognized Single-Gender Social Organizations” including fraternities, sororities, and similar “final clubs”) is too engrained to fix.

The committee was formed after President Faust announced in a letter last year that the college would discourage Greek life by barring members from leading Harvard-recognized organizations, sports teams, and would not receive recommendations from the dean. It now recommends that the school follows examples set by Williams, which outlawed frats in 1962, and Bowdoin, which outlawed frats in 1997 and phased them out with a non-nationally affiliated College House system.
So, it looks like these Greeks too will soon be history.

I couldn’t afford it, either. I did join a musical “fraternity for women” at the U of IL, but we had monthly meetings in a small room, with a “tea” afterwards. Quite staid.
My alma mater has no fraternities or sororities. There were cliques, though. You either had a ski pass to Crested Butte or you didn’t.

Mostly because my older brother had been a member at Purdue University and the frat house was directly opposite the geology building: I was a geology major and that would’ve meant sleeping in until 7.45 for an 8am class.

AFAIK, the Constitution makes no provisions for removing several corrupt officials from office, as the Founding Fathers never anticipated an entire executive branch being corrupt. It would take Congress to file articles of impeachment, and officers of the federal courts being bold enough to serve or arrest members of the administration on criminal charges. We have no precedents for this kind of situation.
Alternatively, the “court of popular opinion” could induce several of these fuckers to resign rather than be removed from office.

The GOP power is slipping right now.
Look at the trouble they are having with the healthcare legislation. It is a must-do for them since they have been promising repeal and replace for 7 years. Reports are they are going to hold a vote, maybe tomorrow, but those same reports are saying they already do not have enough votes to get it through.
That makes them look rather bush-league and McConnell not as powerful as he thinks he is.
Trump doesn’t help. So, the party needs to do something to, well, do something.
Also, this week’s Donny Jr. email mess is changing the whole outlook of the congress. Rachel was saying last night that behind closed doors, there are more and more GOP congress people talking about joining up with the Dems more on healthcare and in the investigations.
It is also being said the big money like the Kochs have grown frustrated with healthcare and realize it might be time to call off the dogs. I think they are figuring out the medical industry and even the insurance industry doesn’t want it, and actually wants the ACA too.
Out front we see them all acting like nothing is wrong. Behind the scenes I think things are getting to a breaking point. Something has to give.

Now it’s every man (and his lawyer) for himself as the president, having hidden from the press and the public ever since he returned home from his Yalta-themed tête-à-tête with Vladimir Putin, escapes to France, of all places. His press secretary is also in hiding, as is his chief of staff, Reince Priebus, who as recently as Sunday dismissed the Donald Jr. story as a “nothingburger” — Trumpspeak for the Nixon press secretary Ron Ziegler’s designation of Watergate as a “third-rate burglary.” About the only administration stalwart not remaining silent is the vice-president, whose statement following the release of the Donald Jr. emails let it be known that he was “not aware” of the Trump Tower meeting and that it had taken place before he joined the campaign. One issue I’ve touched on here and there in my posts on the Russia probe is my abiding sense that especially the younger generation of Trumpers: Kushner, Don Jr., et al. just don’t seem to grasp the magnitude of the trouble they’re in, or at least the magnitude of their legal exposure. I can’t point to any one piece of evidence. It’s more like every piece of evidence. The signs I’m going on are a mix of public evidence, things we see unfolding in the newspapers, and my own reporting. They just don’t act like people who get what they’re dealing with and are acting accordingly.
The abiding sense I get is not simply that they don’t know the magnitude of the legal threat but that they don’t understand the nature of the threat either. They don’t seem to get that a big, sprawling federal investigation like this, untethered from the political chain of command and led by one of the top law enforcement professionals of his generation, trundles onward with a perfect indifference to whether you win the morning or kill it in 10 or a 100 different news cycles. Those things just don’t matter. And yet my sense at least is that Jared Kushner thinks he is helping himself by knifing his brother-in-law - as though if Don Jr is at the center of a media firestorm for a few days, Mueller will just forget about him.

The GOP power is slipping right now.
Look at the trouble they are having with the healthcare legislation. It is a must-do for them since they have been promising repeal and replace for 7 years. Reports are they are going to hold a vote, maybe tomorrow, but those same reports are saying they already do not have enough votes to get it through.
That makes them look rather bush-league and McConnell not as powerful as he thinks he is.

When I saw this, I was struck by a couple things. First, Trump has, by all appearances, a solid floor at 40%. For 40% of America, this guy is exactly what they want, and everything that everyone else sees - the racism, the corruption, the staggering incompetence - they either don’t see, or don’t care about, or actually embrace.
Now, the Administration that claims that they’ll produce economic growth consistently higher than 3% is working on a plan to reduce LEGAL immigration by 50%. This, to anyone with a brain, would make the already impossibly heavy lift of 3% growth even more impossible. Someone posted the productivity growth necessary to achieve 3% growth WITHOUT cutting immigration. It would require productivity growth most of America hasn’t seen in my lifetime.

This is what you get when 40% of America is immune to facts and rational thought, to the extent that they don’t have a clue where economic growth comes from. I am reminded of an online conversation with a Conservative a few years ago. He said - I shit you not - that what America needed was for all Americans to stop spending so much, to live within their means, buy only what they need. This, he said, would lead to the greatest economic boom we’d ever seen.
He believed this. In his mind, economic growth comes from personal virtue, not from demand for goods. His belief is the opposite of reality, it is easily refutable in ways a 10 year old could understand. Yet he clung firmly to it, because that’s what he believes.
This is our problem now. 40% of Americans have lost their mooring in reality, and they managed to elect a President and a Congress similarly unmoored from reality.

And then there is the thinking that what is happening with the polling is they ask for self-identified Republican registered voters. What if there are less self-identified Republican voters overall? Like Joke Scarborough saying he is now an independent.
If there are less Republicans identifying, the polls are still going to show a decent number support Trump. But come voting time, there are also now less voters overall.

The writers give a very brief history of American fundamentalism. They also name-drop Rousas J. Rushdoony, who was the proponent of the “reconstructionism” mentioned above. (Rushdoony wanted to bring back Old Testament law, complete with capital punishment.) The writers walk a careful path between out ad out secularism and fundamentalism, wanting Christian/Catholic input in the modern world, rather than having a holy war or Holy Roman Empire mentality.
Like I said this is tough to read, but take it in small bites—I think the Pope is saying he’s not liking the current fundamentalist marriage to the state.

In actual practice, it ends up feeling like an either/or to a lot of women in the sciences because of a number of factors, including graduate school (I have so much admiration for those who manage to pull off both a Ph.D. and a baby at the same time because hahahahahaha no) and the pressure to be extremely productive the first few years following your graduation (postdoc/pre-tenure) if you want to get a tenure track position (and tenure itself). You might be 35 by the time it’s all “settled” and you know you have a stable job/environment. It absolutely requires a spouse willing to do their share of the heavy lifting and then some, probably, and there’s still all the society pressures that say that women should be doing the majority of this shit, a nontrivial amount of which women have ingrained into their head so you’re fighting your urge to feel guilty about not doing as much.
Oh, that tenure committee is likely made up of dudes who have no idea of the kind of juggling this requires also. (So yes, some of this is definitely tied directly to academia, but let’s face it, science is kind of shitty from a work/life balance perspective so the challenges are still going to be present in industry. And I am speaking primarily from the viewpoint of a research scientist here, which sort of requires a Ph.D. these days.)
There’s a lot of areas this could be improved so it doesn’t feel so much like an either/or. I’m hoping that it will. Some of the bigger name universities are at least paying lip service to that sort of thing now, and while I remain unconvinced that this is necessarily being embraced 100%, it might mean changes are slowly going to happen. Hopefully.
