The Chappaquiddick incident happened July 18, 1969; just two days before the Apollo 11 Moon landing. The Tate LaBianca murders were just 6 weeks later, and Woodstock a week and half after that. The world really seemed to be spinning out of control that summer, somewhat as it does this summer.

My sister and BIL are at Red Rocks tonight seeing Ween, VIP style. I am absolutely eating my heart out, as I have been a fan for 20+ years and my family, who don’t really see Ween as the musical forte that I do, are seeing them tonight at MF RED ROCKS.

re: #28 Flying Squirrel Girl

I saw them at Red Rocks when they released La Cucaracha. They played like 30 songs, but I could tell that Gener just wasn’t into it, he’d saunter behind the band and sit down on Stage Rock and smoke for whole songs, did that more than a few times. During their hiatus Aaron came to the little mountain town next to where I live and played a free show in the park, he mostly did Billy Joel covers.

Have you heard Gener’s Ween set he did with Umphrey’s McGee at Summercamp? That’s what got the ball rolling, IMHO, for the band to get back together, that was the most fun the man had playing music in years, you could tell in the performance.

I got out of Texas partly because the inmates have taken over the asylum under Reverend Howlin’ Mad Abbott, so politically this doesn’t surprise me.

I have to say, though, that I didn’t think anybody even lived in that building. I passed it many times going to Penderey’s spices and “decrepitude” was the vibe. In my mind it was the biggest building on the westernmost end of the east-to-west-running Shit Belt between 20 and 30.

(As opposed to the OTHER Shit Belt, which runs N-S in Arlington between Cooper and 360)

I’ve seen Ween in a lot of places. One of my favorites was in Vail at the 8150 in 1999ish. When they played Voodoo Lady the whole place started jumping, and all the mike stands on stage started swaying, and you could see all the band members making eye contact like WTF?

Power went out in Rockwall. According to reports, the whole city went dark briefly. My neighborhood was dark for an hour. So, I pulled out my telescope. In addition to seeing Jupiter and Saturn, I found globular cluster M70, and then looked up what that meant. It’s a group of stars in orbit around the Milky Way, about 35K light years from earth.

It’s a beautiful sight in binoculars. Summer visible in the mid latitudes of the Northern hemisphere, I used to drive up to the mountains with my binos to go star gazing and would appreciate M70 for its grandeur.

Wow!
Harvard Faculty Move to Ban Frats and Sororities, Calling Their Effects “Heartbreaking”

Whatever goes on during hazing week (or punch week, or whatever)-followed by heavy underage drinking every other week-may be exiled from Harvard’s premises. This morning, a committee of Harvard faculty members recommended that, starting in 2018, the college forbids incoming students from joining “fraternities, sororities, and similar organizations.”

In a 22-page report on The Harvard Crimson, the committee states that, though the college has already moved to get rid of gender-exclusive student groups, the culture of abuse at USGSOs (“Unrecognized Single-Gender Social Organizations” including fraternities, sororities, and similar “final clubs”) is too engrained to fix.
…..snip…..
The committee was formed after President Faust announced in a letter last year that the college would discourage Greek life by barring members from leading Harvard-recognized organizations, sports teams, and would not receive recommendations from the dean. It now recommends that the school follows examples set by Williams, which outlawed frats in 1962, and Bowdoin, which outlawed frats in 1997 and phased them out with a non-nationally affiliated College House system.

So, it looks like these Greeks too will soon be history.

Altamont was later that year. Don’t forget that Project Intercept was interrupting drug traffic, causing dealers to switch to heroin, which was easier to smuggle and much more profitable.

That also helped bring the happy hippy dreams of the 60’s to a rather ugly halt.

I considered joining a fraternity at Indiana University for about fifteen minutes.

Mostly because my older brother had been a member at Purdue University and the frat house was directly opposite the geology building: I was a geology major and that would’ve meant sleeping in until 7.45 for an 8am class.

But that was not enough to convince me.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

So what have the GOP come up today as a means to deflect attention from Russia-Trump mess?

Collusion isn’t a crime? Yeah, that’s an oldie (from earlier in the week) but still being plied.

There’s Kellyanne trying to play word games (she should leave that up to Weird Al).

There’s even Junior and others complaining that how can anyone be talking about Russia-Trump when it wasn’t even a thing when those meetings occurred:

Yeah, about that:

But leave it to Stonekettle to sum things up concisely:

AFAIK, the Constitution makes no provisions for removing several corrupt officials from office, as the Founding Fathers never anticipated an entire executive branch being corrupt. It would take Congress to file articles of impeachment, and officers of the federal courts being bold enough to serve or arrest members of the administration on criminal charges. We have no precedents for this kind of situation.

Alternatively, the “court of popular opinion” could induce several of these fuckers to resign rather than be removed from office.

The GOP power is slipping right now.

Look at the trouble they are having with the healthcare legislation. It is a must-do for them since they have been promising repeal and replace for 7 years. Reports are they are going to hold a vote, maybe tomorrow, but those same reports are saying they already do not have enough votes to get it through.

That makes them look rather bush-league and McConnell not as powerful as he thinks he is.

Trump doesn’t help. So, the party needs to do something to, well, do something.

Also, this week’s Donny Jr. email mess is changing the whole outlook of the congress. Rachel was saying last night that behind closed doors, there are more and more GOP congress people talking about joining up with the Dems more on healthcare and in the investigations.

It is also being said the big money like the Kochs have grown frustrated with healthcare and realize it might be time to call off the dogs. I think they are figuring out the medical industry and even the insurance industry doesn’t want it, and actually wants the ACA too.

Out front we see them all acting like nothing is wrong. Behind the scenes I think things are getting to a breaking point. Something has to give.

What is the path of least resistance if the GOP starts to see they need to save the party and protect their big money backers?

Dump Trump.

Watching the Downfall of a Presidency in Real Time

The good news for those who want to see justice done is that this scandal not only resembles Watergate but also The Godfather — albeit a Godfather where every Corleone is a Fredo and not a single lawyer is as crafty as Tom Hagen, despite the fact that Little Donald’s private attorney has a history of defending clients from mob families. The level of stupidity of the conspirators is staggering: Not the least of the week’s news is that Kushner thought he could get away with omitting this Trump Tower meeting on the government questionnaire he filed to get his security clearance. (The $2.5 million that Charles Kushner donated to Harvard to gain his son admission was not money well spent.) My other favorite detail of the week (so far) is that Rob Goldstone, the former British tabloid writer and Miss Universe entrepreneur who served as the Trump campaign’s Russian middleman, posted on Facebook that he was “preparing for meeting” at Trump Tower on the day it took place.

Now it’s every man (and his lawyer) for himself as the president, having hidden from the press and the public ever since he returned home from his Yalta-themed tête-à-tête with Vladimir Putin, escapes to France, of all places. His press secretary is also in hiding, as is his chief of staff, Reince Priebus, who as recently as Sunday dismissed the Donald Jr. story as a “nothingburger” — Trumpspeak for the Nixon press secretary Ron Ziegler’s designation of Watergate as a “third-rate burglary.” About the only administration stalwart not remaining silent is the vice-president, whose statement following the release of the Donald Jr. emails let it be known that he was “not aware” of the Trump Tower meeting and that it had taken place before he joined the campaign. Mike Pence has clearly been boning up on Gerald Ford, and may already be brooding about the risks entailed if he should eventually be in the position to pardon the 45th president.

It was inevitable. In general, the GOP leadership has been dumbing down for the better part of three decades now. The Peter Principle, hard at work.

Since the days of Lee Atwater, Republicans have been pushing forth more and more watered-down versions of their ‘evil genius’ - Atwater to Rove to dim bulbs like Conway and Priebus. They kept going back to that particular well until the water they’re pulling out now is all but undrinkable. The balance has tipped way over onto the ‘evil’ side minus the ‘genius.’

You gotta read the whole thing. Rich is really good at snark, and Carp is right there with him. Here’s another snip that’s glorious.

There will be no single smoking gun that will bring down this White House. It will be death by firing squad — or perhaps a sequence of firing squads — as the whole story inexorably pours out of the administration’s smoldering ruins. This week’s bombshell has the feel of gallows humor. Trump Jr.’s panicked release of the self-incriminating emails is tantamount to picking up a loaded gun and shooting himself in the head. Why did Little Donald not do what the Trumps always do in these situations — let the press (in this case the Times) go ahead and report its incriminating findings, rail against leakers, and then dismiss the latest incontrovertible evidence of wrongdoing as “fake news”? Was Little Donald trying to protect his father from even worse revelations? To take down his brother-in-law even as his brother-in-law (a possible source of the emails) tried to take down him? To deliver a message from or to the Kremlin?

If I were a pager, I would do this one up, as it hearkens back to something out of LGF’s political past:

A Font Is at the Heart of Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Legal Troubles

A font might just be the political death knell for Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently embroiled in legal troubles that began with a 2016 leak of documents popularly known as the Panama Papers. According to a report of a joint investigation team probing the source of Sharif’s family wealth, a property deed dated 2006 was typed in Microsoft’s Calibri font. That’s mysterious, because the font apparently did not debut until 2007.

More good reading from Josh: The Big Trumpers still don’t get the trouble they’re in. Emphasis mine.

One issue I’ve touched on here and there in my posts on the Russia probe is my abiding sense that especially the younger generation of Trumpers: Kushner, Don Jr., et al. just don’t seem to grasp the magnitude of the trouble they’re in, or at least the magnitude of their legal exposure. I can’t point to any one piece of evidence. It’s more like every piece of evidence. The signs I’m going on are a mix of public evidence, things we see unfolding in the newspapers, and my own reporting. They just don’t act like people who get what they’re dealing with and are acting accordingly.

The abiding sense I get is not simply that they don’t know the magnitude of the legal threat but that they don’t understand the nature of the threat either. Again and again they seem to think the legal vulnerability can be trumped by good news cycles or getting the press to focus on some other individual. They don’t seem to get that a big, sprawling federal investigation like this, untethered from the political chain of command and led by one of the top law enforcement professionals of his generation, trundles onward with a perfect indifference to whether you win the morning or kill it in 10 or a 100 different news cycles. Those things just don’t matter. And yet my sense at least is that Jared Kushner thinks he is helping himself by knifing his brother-in-law - as though if Don Jr is at the center of a media firestorm for a few days, Mueller will just forget about him.

Here is an example of what I’m talking about. This is from Mike Allen’s morning Axios email.

The view in Kushner’s orbit is that the brutal new revelations are more P.R. problems than legal problems. And if he makes progress with his Middle East peace efforts, perceptions would be very different.

Again, this strikes me as a profound and dangerous naïveté. These are certainly not PR problems. Prosecutors, meanwhile, really don’t care how well you’re doing on the policy front. But even if you grant the nonsensical premise - that grave legal problems can be managed with good PR or even substantive policy successes - this is an inane statement.

Annnd, here’s something else to worry about: How Canadian researchers reconstituted an extinct poxvirus for $100,000 using mail-order DNA

Eradicating smallpox, one of the deadliest diseases in history, took humanity decades and cost billions of dollars. Bringing the scourge back would probably take a small scientific team with little specialized knowledge half a year and cost about $100,000.

That’s one conclusion from an unusual and as-yet unpublished experiment performed last year by Canadian researchers. A group led by virologist David Evans of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, says it has synthesized the horsepox virus, a relative of smallpox, from genetic pieces ordered in the mail. Horsepox is not known to harm humans—and like smallpox, researchers believe it no longer exists in nature; nor is it seen as a major agricultural threat. But the technique Evans used could be used to recreate smallpox, a horrific disease that was declared eradicated in 1980. “No question. If it’s possible with horsepox, it’s possible with smallpox,” says virologist Gerd Sutter of Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany.

This is what happens when you’ve got a reactionary know-nothing criminal syndicate running things. They are all about enriching themselves and don’t even bother to understand the consequences of their actions or the harms they bring to the nation.

It’s all goal oriented: can we profit from this.

Can you meet with Russians to help win election? Yes. We’d love it - ignoring that it’s expressly prohibited under federal law. They don’t care about the law - Trump never has. He has no use for contracts or limitations under the law. His supporters think all this is grand, because they think that Trump running roughshod over the Constitution will somehow help them. The GOP continues enabling for the same reason (to get rid of the safety net, they’ll use Trump to pass whatever crap they want). Trumpcare is cover for Russia-Trump, and vice versa.

Both are mortal threats and perils for the nation. Both are direct assaults on Americans, whether they realize it or not.

Thanks for that. Good comments all!

Does dumping Trump rid us of Sessions and all the other Russia supporters? Will we still be under the Kremlin’s thumb for…god only knows what, since we know the RNC was hacked but nothing was released? It’s obvious Rohrbacher is compromised.

And at this point, and I am sure this was part of the Kremlin’s desires, while I never trusted the GOP (even moreso now), I am finding trust slipping across all lines. The Nation playing kumbayah with Russia. Bernie doing the same. Jill Fucking Stein.

At this point, who in American politics is actually pro-America?

As absurd as the Trumpian defenses have been this week and for his whole campaign-presidency, I can’t help but wonder if Team Hillary would have been better off taking the “We didn’t do anything wrong, suck it” defense on the email business instead of apologizing for it. When the final Comey surprise dropped the week before the election it felt like a bombshell, but shouldn’t have been. I felt like we were all conditioned to react in fear to it, as if we were always waiting for the next shoe to drop about it. But I wonder what impact a more belligerent or dismissive attitude towards the whole phony scandal might have been.

Maybe the reality is that Team Clinton’s response was a mix of things and without a Fox News-Rush Limbaugh Talk Radio network to poo-pah any allegations on her behalf, she was ultimately in trouble no matter what response she put forward.

It doesn’t seem too far fetched that this group of Mean Kids figured they could let the Old Man prattle on and wreck shit and attract all the attention (and take the resultant shit) while they funneled more and more money into the Trump coffers.

The fly in the ointment is contained in Josh Marshall’s piece - they’ve all led sheltered, pampered lives where they’ve always been able to get away with anything. When I saw this, I was struck by a couple things. First, Trump has, by all appearances, a solid floor at 40%. For 40% of America, this guy is exactly what they want, and everything that everyone else sees - the racism, the corruption, the staggering incompetence - they either don’t see, or don’t care about, or actually embrace.

Now, the Administration that claims that they’ll produce economic growth consistently higher than 3% is working on a plan to reduce LEGAL immigration by 50%. This, to anyone with a brain, would make the already impossibly heavy lift of 3% growth even more impossible. Someone posted the productivity growth necessary to achieve 3% growth WITHOUT cutting immigration. It would require productivity growth most of America hasn’t seen in my lifetime.

This is what you get when 40% of America is immune to facts and rational thought, to the extent that they don’t have a clue where economic growth comes from. I am reminded of an online conversation with a Conservative a few years ago. He said - I shit you not - that what America needed was for all Americans to stop spending so much, to live within their means, buy only what they need. This, he said, would lead to the greatest economic boom we’d ever seen.

He believed this. In his mind, economic growth comes from personal virtue, not from demand for goods. His belief is the opposite of reality, it is easily refutable in ways a 10 year old could understand. Yet he clung firmly to it, because that’s what he believes.

This is our problem now. 40% of Americans have lost their mooring in reality, and they managed to elect a President and a Congress similarly unmoored from reality.

And with that, I leave you with this thought…

I think Rachel mentioned Grassley is one of the Republicans that has grown tired of Trump family antics this week with the Donny Jr. revelations. She said it seemed many Republicans are really grumbling but it is all behind the scenes.

They have to put on their Fox faces for the cameras still, but that may not last too much longer.

If we hear some Republican Senators (not named McCain or Graham) come right out and say there is most definitely a Russian connection and the Trumps worked directly with Russians to gain advantage in the election…it is over for Trump and gang.

I wonder if General Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord would’ve had to come up a category for Kushner and the Trump family.

“I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.”

It was only at the end of the hearings, when the existence of secret recordings were revealed, that he dropped into the 30’s.

What finally drove dubya into the low-20s (even below the crazification factor of 27%, no less) was a failed war, Katrina, and the financial crisis - the last one especially since it had the greatest personal impact to those who otherwise supported him. And all three things together led to a crucial convergence: the stench of incompetence and being a “loser.”

So…the only thing I can see cracking through cheeto benito’s floor is either a similar mishandled crisis that hits trumpchumps where it hurts, or some sort of personal scandal that makes him look like such a gross, creepy loser that even they’ll be embarrassed by it (so…him being the recipient of “trickle-down” from underage hookers, perhaps…?)

And those numbers may never go lower for Trump.

Which makes me wonder why we trust those numbers after the mess we saw with polling numbers in November. Many now think the people that voted for Trump never admitted in the polling they would vote for Trump. Maybe they were embarrassed but took the leap anyway.

So, are those same too embarrassed now to admit they don’t support him?

And then there is the thinking that what is happening with the polling is they ask for self-identified Republican registered voters. What if there are less self-identified Republican voters overall? Like Joke Scarborough saying he is now an independent.

If there are less Republicans identifying, the polls are still going to show a decent number support Trump. But come voting time, there are also now less voters overall.

April:

If the NYS GOP want to win the 2018 governor’s race, however, stalwarts of party could take into account a handful of considerations to realize that Donald Trump, Jr., might be the candidate they are looking for

May:

In May 2017, Trump Jr. met with Republican National Committee officials to discuss the party’s strategy and resources.

June:

However, one member of the Trump family has begun a running commentary in response to Comey’s testimony — Donald Trump Jr.

July:

…casting Trump Jr. as someone who just wants to hunt, fish and run his family’s real estate business…”The kid is an honest kid”

From the heir apparent to “just a kid, wants to hunt and fish.”

Yeah, he hasn’t even had a crisis yet, or at least not one of his own making.

I don’t trust Grassley anymore, not that I ever much did. But he’s been predictably wingnut in the past few years. Maybe he’ll surprise me.

It will be the economy. When Trump and his merry band of little con men finally manage to drive the economy into a deep recession and further Republican austerity policies and tax cuts fail to do anything but dig a deeper hole, he’ll hit Bush popularity levels.

Interestingly, Turks of my acquaintance have the same general observation of Erdogan, their own little tin-horn would-be Sultan. If Turkey’s economy craters, the long-simmering discontent will skyrocket and finally blow up in the AKP’s collective face.

Well, let’s be honest. It’s not our marriage. If it works for them, then it is a good marriage. I’m really tired of people thinking their values are universal. Marriage as a romantic institution is not the only facet of marriage.

Yup. Bill and Hillary’s marriage is their business. I also suspect it’s a lot more romantic than Newt and Callista’s or Donald and Melania’s.

For sure. And there is something to be said that she did stay by him. He definitely made some mistakes but you know what, I know lots of couples where one of the partners has made mistakes and they worked things out. Newt is the dude who cheated on his sick wife and Donald is the dude who bragged about his sex life to the tabloids for his kids to see. It really says a lot that the RR sees both men as moral.

OK, I’ll be the first to say this is an extremely tough read, but I think it’s an important read. It’s from the English edition of La Civilta Cattolica, which is pretty much the voice of the Pope. Writings published here are scrutinized by the Vatican first.

Basically, the Vatican is expressing concern over “spiritual warfare,” “prosperity theology,” “reconstructionism (dominionism)” and fundamentalism. The writers give a very brief history of American fundamentalism. They also name-drop Rousas J. Rushdoony, who was the proponent of the “reconstructionism” mentioned above. (Rushdoony wanted to bring back Old Testament law, complete with capital punishment.) The writers walk a careful path between out ad out secularism and fundamentalism, wanting Christian/Catholic input in the modern world, rather than having a holy war or Holy Roman Empire mentality.

Like I said this is tough to read, but take it in small bites—I think the Pope is saying he’s not liking the current fundamentalist marriage to the state.

re: #405 The Vicious Babushka

Why is that an either/or?

For her, because she’s an idiot who wants women to be barefoot and pregnant. At least, that’s what I get out of her Twitter profile.

In actual practice, it ends up feeling like an either/or to a lot of women in the sciences because of a number of factors, including graduate school (I have so much admiration for those who manage to pull off both a Ph.D. and a baby at the same time because hahahahahaha no) and the pressure to be extremely productive the first few years following your graduation (postdoc/pre-tenure) if you want to get a tenure track position (and tenure itself). You might be 35 by the time it’s all “settled” and you know you have a stable job/environment. It absolutely requires a spouse willing to do their share of the heavy lifting and then some, probably, and there’s still all the society pressures that say that women should be doing the majority of this shit, a nontrivial amount of which women have ingrained into their head so you’re fighting your urge to feel guilty about not doing as much.

Oh, that tenure committee is likely made up of dudes who have no idea of the kind of juggling this requires also. (So yes, some of this is definitely tied directly to academia, but let’s face it, science is kind of shitty from a work/life balance perspective so the challenges are still going to be present in industry. And I am speaking primarily from the viewpoint of a research scientist here, which sort of requires a Ph.D. these days.)

There’s a lot of areas this could be improved so it doesn’t feel so much like an either/or. I’m hoping that it will. Some of the bigger name universities are at least paying lip service to that sort of thing now, and while I remain unconvinced that this is necessarily being embraced 100%, it might mean changes are slowly going to happen. Hopefully.

First thing that came to my mind — the logic implies that you have to have six smart SONS to fulfill the requirement, because the girls are stuck being baby-makers themselves. *pffft*

As also noted, IQ is not a direct 1:1 inheritance. My dad had an IQ in the genius 180+ range (before he drank it down to 140). Five kids are all above-average IQ but ain’t none of us at his level.
