Just found myself thinking that the time to show you were “moderate” tonight was before Lee and Moran released their joint statement. After that, you’re proving you’re not a “moderate” by pulling support for the bill, you’re showing you’re a spineless douche who needed the cover of another before you’d “stand up” to your party’s base.

So the GOP has had 8 years to come up with an ACA alternative, fail to do so only to watch their bill fail, and now want to put the demise of the ACA on a timer with the promise that they’ll have a replacement and the voters needed to pass it by 2019.

Arrogance and stupidity, all in one neat little package. How efficient of them.

What a “mavericky” viewpoint!

I realize it makes political/legislative/logical sense: but it would put a serious dent in the GOP’s contemporary Congressional strategy: which is to govern as a one-party tyranny, ignoring (where not dismissing/disparaging/delegitimizing/demonizing) Democrats wherever and whenever they can.

Sad.

Yeah, GOPers are pissed that everything was done in secret. They’re screaming “give us an opportunity! We can fuck up more people if you let us have input!” which is why they want to go back to actual “Senating”. It’s not like their goals are different, they just want to have skin in the game by taking our skin out of the game.

The quote from the letter actually suggests it was only about the President as a means to get her husband killed:

lawhawk  Jul 18, 2017 • 6:17:05am

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Some nasty storms came through last night across parts of NJ and NY, but mostly missed our area.

That’s kind of how Trumpcare will operate. It’s a shitstorm of epic proportions, but only the rich manage to avoid the consequences (unless by consequences you mean tax cuts).

Trumpcare is a tax cut scheme first and foremost. Any straight repeal, let alone repeal and replace is a tax cut scheme for the rich with all the burdens going to everyone else, especially those who are least capable of affording care/coverage.

Last night’s actions by the GOP shows that they have had 8 years to concoct a plan to replace Obamacare and they’re barely able to wrap their tiny little hands around repeal.

Repealing Obamacare in a straight repeal means 20+ million lose coverage, preexisting condition coverage is more expensive, dependents age 21-26 lose their coverage, etc., but the rich get their investment tax cut break. Medicaid expansion disappears too, so millions lose coverage.

Why? The GOP doesn’t have a plan to replace. They never did. None of their plans ever passed the smell test.

It’s why I continue to call Trumpcare and #GOPDontCare malware and vaporware. It’s not a plan so much as a plan to undermine health coverage for all Americans. It will jack up premiums and increase health care costs. It will spur medically induced bankruptcies and increase the uninsured rate to at or above pre-Obamacare levels, and the insurers will again be able to write policies that aren’t worth the paper they’re written on and wont cover even emergency situations due to how they’re written.

The GOP is a sham, and their supporters continue to buy this nonsense. They’re incapable to admitting to error, and the GOP feeds on this by continuing to claim that they’ll do a repeal now and a replacement down the road.

A replacement down the road that will likely end up looking like… wait for it…. Obamacare (because at its heart, the ACA is a hodgepodge of ideas, including ones that the Democrats included to entice GOP votes that never ended up coming). The GOP decided that their strategy would be to claim that all the ACA is socialism and against personal responsibility while it was the GOP (Heritage) that initiated the idea of the individual mandate to get people to pay into the insurance marketplaces.

The GOP has sued relentlessly over ACA implementation, and their biggest win was to avoid the Medicaid expansion. That’s the biggest loss for actual GOPers who live in those states, because GOP controlled states continue to see the worst uninsured rates in the nation. Meanwhile, states with Medicaid expansion have seen some of the biggest declines and stabilization of health providers.

The GOP will undo all this.

But don’t just take my word for it. Take theirs:

Andy Slavitt
Charles Gaba
Topher Spiro

Or maybe, you like someone who isn’t a policy wonk:
The CBO.

Or maybe you want to get a clue on how those in the system think this through:

AARP
AMA
The insurers themselves.

All of them oppose Trumpcare in its myriad versions. Why? Because they all ultimately do the same thing: they all irreparably damage health care delivery in the US to deliver massive tax cuts to millionaires like Trump.

Now that they control both House and Senate plus the WH, they can’t get past the same baffling BS. Why? Because no plan they can offer will deliver as much to as many for comparable cost.

They’re not even trying to replace with something comparable because they want to get the government out of health care altogether.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before (this is becoming reflexive as I age and get rolly eyes from my kids), but a friend who is in the healthcare industry worked on parts of the ACA. He said it was purposefully constructed—to the degree possible considering a variety of limitations—to link together in ways that would make it very difficult to dismantle. Can’t think of a good analogy, so I’ll go with “bank bag with exploding paint packet that will blow up in the face of anyone who tries to open and steal” (politically, of course, because hospitals and insurance are still finding ways to exploit the ACA in real ways). But apparently McConnell is convinced that it won’t matter to their voters if GOP politicians have purple paint all over their hands and faces.

re: #80 dangerman

the real reason why they’re dealing with razor thin margins and they couldnt pass bcra or any of the other 100’s of repeals over the last 7 years is nobody wanted what they were packaging up and trying to sell

A lot of people seem pretty sure they (GOP) are just messing with us and they will still roll out the healthcare bill as is one way or another. They said it after the House bill passed. They said the week before the 4th they would push it through the week after. They said it all last week…it would be pushed through this week. Some are saying it will still be pushed through.

I expect for some time we are going to hear how the GOP will repeal it and kill insurance altogether.

Apparently what Americans in general think, what the insurance companies warn about and what the medical care industry fear and want has no bearing on the GOP doing what they are going to do.

One-sixth of the economy and we citizens and the real people in the business don’t have any bearing.

That is not politics, that is nuts. Maybe the Fox Facts work, so many moderate and far left liberals believe them too.

Anyone wonder why the left has a hard time in elections? This is a good study of the problem.

60+ attempts to repeal during Obama years were just bluster and bullshit to keep the rubes in line.

Now that they control both House and Senate plus the WH, they can’t get past the same baffling BS. Why? Because no plan they can offer will deliver as much to as many for comparable cost.

They’re not even trying to replace with something comparable because they want to get the government out of health care altogether.

And that is not going to happen. The cows are out of the barn. The kids have left the farm for the big city. The ship has sailed. (More cliches needed).

Remember…even Trump promised his voters good healthcare. They are holding him to it whether he realizes it or not.

Georgia Straight was a Canadian underground paper and was sympathetic to the protesters. The headline is mocking President Nixon’s earlier description of the protesters as “bums.”
The Kent State Massacre and America’s Response

The main article actually recaps Nixon’s attitude immediately before and after the events by quoting not only his May 1 bum reference, but also his May 5 reminder that when protestors act violently they are inviting tragedy.

The shootings occurred on May 4, but there had been several days of increasingly intense protests leading up to it.

More “blaming” than “crediting”, but yeah.

And to say I have zero sympathy for the esteemed Majority Leader and his cretinous colleagues would be overstating the issue considerably.

In a normal political environment this would be a golden opportunity for the Opposition Democrats to make considerable political hay by standing up for the ACA (well, the popular bits of it, anyway), and reminding the electorate (and the media) just WHO it was that got on the right side of public opinion on the healthcare issue.

Just to make sure everyone remembers, we’ve already seen a Timelord regenerate into a woman: The general in the episode Hell Bent who is shot by the Doctor. She was a woman before the prior regeneration, and when she goes back to being a woman she says something to the effect of “How do they fit all that ego in there?”

Darwin could have spent a lifetime studying “Florida Man”

A Florida man faces a list of charges after deputies said he reported a bag of cocaine and some cash stolen over the weekend.

David Blackmon, 35, of Fort Walton Beach, called the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office to report the theft Sunday morning, deputies said.

Deputies said Blackmon described himself as a drug dealer and told them someone had gotten into his car and taken $50 and a quarter-ounce of cocaine from the center console.

Powder and crack cocaine as well as a crack pipe were found inside the vehicle, deputies said. The money was nowhere to be found.

Blackmon was booked on charges of cocaine possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest without violence, jail records show. He remains in custody in lieu of $4,000 bail.

A third, related problem is the yawning gap between reality and the apocalyptic rhetoric GOP lawmakers deployed against President Barack Obama. I heard a comment last night Mitch pulled the bill to help protect his members. I guess that goes both ways. Other GOP Senators don’t have to say they would have voted no too and Mitch and henchmen don’t have to be embarrassed by the others voting no.

Mitch will still be flapping the jaw saying he is going to keep working, but that too is all show.

From the linked article…

The current political climate is already looking dicey for Republicans as the 2018 midterms loom. Democrats have a 50/40 lead on the generic Congressional ballot. Much gets made of Donald Trump’s unpopularity and certainly it’s true voters don’t care for him- only 41% approve of the job he’s doing to 55% who disapprove. But Trump comes out looking positively popular compared to Paul Ryan (24/57 approval) and Mitch McConnell (18/58). Congress overall has an 11% approval rating, to 75% of voters who disapprove of it. Democrats should have the opportunity next year to turn them into bogeymen much as Republicans have with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in recent years.

Any wonder why they are having trouble getting the healthcare act passed?

Trump is actively engaging in sabotage of a functioning government program so as to cause its collapse.

Trump wants millions of people to suffer so that the GOP can turn around and say that they can now repeal the program because it isn’t working.

It isn’t going to work because the GOP is sabotaging it. Trump is sabotaging it.

This is extortion. This isn’t how a negotiator works. It certainly isn’t how government operates or is supposed to function.

The GOP has abdicated its role as legislators and governing. Instead, it’s intent on gutting federal government roles so as to further empower and enrich a privileged few on the backs of everyone else in the nation.

I imagined it. I thought this was going to happen the minute they invited in the crazy Tea Party wingnuts.

Adoptable American babies, especially healthy white newborns, have been scarce ever since single mother stopped being the most embarrassing possible thing. this all comes back to that asinine position that McConnell took when 44 came to office. Okay, I get that he’s a racist prick, but making a broad assumption that not everyone in his party actually is (yes, maybe a majority, but not all of them) couldn’t anyone in that fucking caucus tell him that he was going to ruin the fucking party with this bullshit? I mean we’ve got nearly 150 years behind us with the civil war, 50 years with the Civil Rights Act and here these guys are, playing with people’s lives because the majority of this nation elected a black man to its highest office twice and for reasons that defy any kind of self-examination, they simply cannot get over it.

How fucking myopic is that?

If there was an iota of actual proof that the GOP actually disagreed with the ACA itself and it not just being a piece of legacy legislation for not just Obama, but the Democrats as well, they would have found something to present to the public that wasn’t just an ever changing array of shit, offered up on different styles of bread.

and now we fast forward to today, where the leadership of the GOP is so caught up in their own racism, that they’ve sold the entire country out to a foreign power to try and seize power and erase 44 from the collective national memory.

It’s fucking pathetic how the GOP has internalized their racism as policy. Everything else is just window dressing nods to the nazi’s, evangelicals and 1%.

He doesn’t know how politics works. He doesn’t know that he already had 45-48 votes willing to go along with this crap show.

He only had to convince another 2-5 Senators, and he failed. His negotiating prowess is nothing but shiite. He can’t negotiate his way out of a paper bag.

There’s a reason for that. He’s a con artist who has no grasp of policy, how to overcome political differences, or anything else.

But when this fails, he wants to make sure that it’s not his fault. It’s gonna be someone else’s fault he couldn’t seal the deal.

Some reports said he didn’t have the senators that were undecided at the dinner meeting last night. And those Senators cut him and Mitch at the knees during that dinner.

Yeah, mighty fine politics there Trump.

I think he is too intimidated to actually talk with anyone that stands up to him.
