Foretelling.

I try to read Trump tweets and consider what will be known three days ahead. It all changes.

So, he may already be out ahead of himself and we will find he was very private about his second talk with Putin. We will find they were “out in the open” but no one could be near due to bodyguards/Secret Service, etc.

All subject to change.

From earlier today:

Here is my response:

I am a veteran in a family full of veterans and active duty people. I am 47, which means I’m old enough to have grown up when guns were not toys, but were treated with respect. (My grandfather would have slapped a lot of gun owners these days upside their heads and taken their guns the way they act now.) Asking for input from Veterans is falling into the appeal-to-authority fallacy, and really, we’re not necessarily that much of an expert on the issue. In fact, there would be no way this country could have the kinds of restrictions on firearms that we had in the military.

Having said that, there are two things to discuss with this issue. The first one is easy, which would be my suggestions for gun laws. Most are fairly straightforward, and attempts have been made to implement some of them:

1. All guns should be registered with their owner. Any sales must include a notification of transfer of ownership.
2. Medical professionals, judges, or the police should be able to recommend suspension of gun ownership. Citizens should be able to make reasonable recommendations to police in this matter, where the police will investigate.
3. Every new gun owner needs to be taught the NRA’s code of conduct regarding firearms and be expected to follow it. Failure to follow it in handling guns should be grounds for losing access until retrained.
4. Large weapons should be stored at a shooting range.

The second thing to discuss, though, is the current myth about guns in this country. And until we overcome these, there is nothing that can be done.
1. “Your guns can be used to overthrow the government.” All it would take is a missile to your property to end that real quick.
2. “Guns protect you in assault.” Most of the time they don’t, and a lot of times get turned on the owner.
3. “The NRA cares about your gun rights.” No, the national organization doesn’t. They care about sales. They have been silent numerous times where police have killed someone who had a gun near them, but did not pull it out. And not all of the victims were black.
4. “Carrying a gun deters violence.” If that were true, Europe and Canada would be rampant with killings and we would be free of them. In fact, it’s the other way around by a wide margin. And the margin is entirely due to guns.

What all of these really boil down to is that most people do not understand that guns are only good at one thing: Killing. They do not deter. There will always be a bigger gun. And if people do not respect them enough, and respect those around them enough, we will not change the number of needless deaths in this country.

From 1933 to 1995 the Democrats were almost always in control of both houses of Congress. 40 years in a row (1955-1995) for the House is especially impressive.

That’s probably why US politics more or less worked in the second half of the 20th century.

Anymouse 🌹  Jul 18, 2017 • 7:35:00pm

I just got a pants-on-fire call from the village clerk that I had to get over to the village hall right away to pick up a water sample kit to do an emergency sample.

Yeah, no. The sample is for radium (a seven-year test), and is not an emergency that needs to be done right now. I can do it in the morning.

The odd thing though is she said she texted my landline about eight times before she tried to make a voice call. (The clerk lives in the county seat where they have cell service.)

I talked to the other water operator about this, and she noted that there is now technology where you can send texts to landlines. They convert the text words to synthesised voice if you accept the text.

The trick is those texts on a landline service can take a couple days to go through, and cost north of $50 per text.

The strange thing here is our clerk knows I have a landline (everyone in town does). Why she would send a text to my telephone when she could at worst leave a message on my answering machine makes no sense.

The other water operator is also on the board. She said if the clerk tries to turn in a claim for texts to my landline (since that is not a free service), she would reject it out-of-hand.

So tomorrow I have to go to one of the wells and draw a test for radium and uranium. (Uranium naturally occurs in water here so testing is mandatory - our reverse osmosis units in homes are set up to take that out of the water.)

Lawrence O’Donnell is just saying Mitch McConnell has to have that vote for full repeal because he doesn’t want to be seen as weak and defeated and that he didn’t quit. And many of the Senators that want to lay low are pushing Mitch to not have the vote for it will hurt them at home.

They will have a very tough time passing anything more on this bill. It is in full Rigor mortis. That’s a zombie they are talking about now. The GOP women of the Senate will give cover to the male weaklings that don’t want to be associated with a no or a yes vote and they will kill the zombie.

My father spoke Slovak. He could carry on a basic conversation with the Russian couple across the street where I grew up. The wife used to get so excited being able to speak to someone other than her husband. My dad would ride along probably only getting enough to have a basic idea.

As a little kid I would stand there next to my dad amazed. The tone and delivery of Russian is very different to a little kid that has only heard English. It was the 50s early 60s.

My mom’s maternal grandfather, native Slovak learned some Russian too since he spent sometime in Siberia and grew up not too far from the borderlands of the Russian empire. I think Slovak and Russian are more closely related than Russian and Slovene. Not sure though.

All your homes on that service have RO filters? Geez, past those filters there is very little of anything. We run that here at home, but it’s about finicky Orchid species and the fertilizer for them being all dialed in for that kind of water. We tweak the ph a bit maybe.

Yes. The village installed an RO unit in every home and business (that was before I got here), after the EPA lowered the standard for arsenic in water.’ The EPA and the state demanded that towns (primarily on the High Plains) comply with the new standard.

Because of the size of our town, it was considerably less expensive to buy an RO unit and have it regularly serviced than install a water treatment plant in a town of 128.

*sigh* I see that quite a few clueless lefties (no one here, thankfully) are still trying to slut shame Melania Trump with her old modeling pictures.

KNOCK IT OFF, PEOPLE! THAT IS A REPUBLICAN TACTIC, BASED ON THEIR HYPOCRITICAL NOTIONS OF “MORALITY!”

Besides, which is worse, posing naked or voluntarily supporting Trump?
Personally, I would be sorely embarrassed if someone inexplicably posted a nude picture of me, but I would be trembling in fear of hellfire in spite of my agnosticism if I belonged to the Trump administration.

Personally, I wouldn’t care what Melania did then or now. That’s her business. There are plenty of moral scolds on the left who want to tell you what you “have” to do to behave as well.

Pathetic. Anything to divert from the fact that the President is a Russian colluding dipshit. You know what, I think this shows that deep down that many of them wanted Clinton to win, it’s easier to sell Clinton bullshit to their rubes than spend 24/7 defending an ass like Trump.

Honestly, I probably hate McConnell more than I do Trump. Fuck that turtle-faced piece of shit and his Kill the Poor bill.

That’s just it. It’s not the poor, is everyone whether you get insurance on your own or through your employer. Preexisting conditions apply to all. Lifetime limits, too. No insurance insurance, shitty policies that cover little, having to get special insurance for maternity, recissions during chemo. All that good stuff is hardly about the poor alone. They get fucked to be sure. So do the olds. And those who are not healthy.

It’s all of us. All of us.

Sent to Wonkette’s tip line. Let’s see if Rebecca does anything with it.

My wife just finished making a Fifties wrap dress from a Butterick pattern she ordered from the vintage pattern site a couple days ago.

I’m guessing in a few weeks all our clothing is going to have the Fifties and Sixties look.

Well technically Trump never even blamed Bernie in the first place. He blamed Democrats and some Republicans.

I don’t really care what a woman chooses to do with her own body, and that includes a future first lady.

The wingnut obsession with Michelle Obama was hypocrisy and hatred of a black woman. It had nothing to do with her bare arms.

I mean he led a few rallies against Trumpcare, so that’s something I guess. But I would also say that Senate Democrats only played a small role themselves, not like there was much they could do considering how Republicans completely shut them out of the process. But this (tentative?) victory goes to the grassroots.

Exactly. As I’ve said before, for someone who gets praise from admirers for being not a typical politician, I think Sanders is more typical politician than they admit. That doesn’t mean he’s bad person but it’s something had Clinton pulled a stunt like this, the bros would have been outraged about.

As I’ve said. He wants to be a Democrat when it’s trendy to be one but he’ll revert to independent status when it suits his interests and you know what, that’d be fine if not for one little wrinkle, his instance on telling the Dems how to run their party and the talk about running again in 2020.

They’re both Slavic languages. However Slovene is a South Slavic language and Russian is a East Slavic language. According to my Slovene cousin, most Slovenes learn English and German as their secondary and third language.

There’s about 1000 years of divergence. Think English and German.
