Mueller Crosses Trump’s “Red Line,” Expands Investigation to Include Trump’s Businesses

What timing
Politics • Views: 32,399

Yesterday we noted that in his latest interview with the New York Times, Donald Trump attacked special counsel Robert Mueller, and hinted that he might fire Mueller if the investigation expanded to include Trump’s business transactions.

Today Bloomberg reports that Robert Mueller’s investigation has expanded to include Trump’s business transactions.

The U.S. special counsel investigating possible ties between the Donald Trump campaign and Russia in last year’s election is examining a broad range of transactions involving Trump’s businesses as well as those of his associates, according to a person familiar with the probe.

FBI investigators and others are looking at Russian purchases of apartments in Trump buildings, Trump’s involvement in a controversial SoHo development in New York with Russian associates, the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow and Trump’s sale of a Florida mansion to a Russian oligarch in 2008, the person said.

The investigation also has absorbed a money-laundering probe begun by federal prosecutors in New York into Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Trump’s threats are really working for him; let’s hope he keeps it up. We don’t know if the timing of Trump’s warning and Mueller’s expanded investigation is just a coincidence, but it’s certainly LOL-worthy.

I don’t think it is a coincidence. I think DT knew it was coming, because of subpoenas being in the air, and he fired a shot across the bow. Mueller may have speeded it up a day or so just for the LULZ, but I bet he just said, shure!, and kept plowing straight ahead.

“Mr. Nevel, you and your people, you talk about reparations,” Congemi said to Nevel, who is white. “The reparations that you talk about, Mr. Nevel, your people already got your reparations. Your reparations came in the form of a man named Barack Obama.”

“Get out of here!” someone can be heard yelling at Congemi.

“My advice to you, if you don’t like it here in America, planes leave every hour from Tampa airport,” the candidate continued. “Go back to Africa! Go back to Africa! Go back!”

Morale Is Low At The Justice Department As Trump Again Attacks Jeff Sessions

“I would say the mood is one of sober resignation,” a current Justice Department attorney who has served over the past two decades told BuzzFeed News in a written message. “I’m not hearing anyone complain about the criticism of Sessions himself (who commands little respect), but Trump’s attitude that the AG, and by extension the Department as a whole, exists solely to defend him is deeply concerning. The same goes for his inexplicable chumminess with Putin.”
…..
“You have a president who is criticizing an attorney general who he picked for essentially following the rules of legal ethics,” the former DOJ attorney said, referring to Trump’s criticism of Sessions for recusing from the Russia probe. “And that invites the kind of question that, ‘When I, a career prosecutor, has to follow the rules of ethics, what does that mean for me?’”

How the 2000 Election in Florida Led to a New Wave of Voter Disenfranchisement

Before the election, Florida sent its county election supervisors a list of 58,000 alleged felons to purge from the voting rolls. Florida was one of eight states that prevented ex-felons from voting. The felon-disenfranchisement law dated back to 1868, when the state banned anyone with a felony conviction from voting unless the governor issued a pardon. The law targeted newly emancipated African-Americans, who during slavery were far more likely to be arrested than whites, including for such offenses as looking at a white woman. This racially discriminatory policy was still on the books in 2000. Blacks made up only 11 percent of registered voters in the state, but 44 percent of those on the purge list, which turned out to be littered with errors.

Quick OJ Related Hot Take by me:

1. OJ is a murderer. I’ve never met a conflict free murderer, but whatevs Juice.
2. The LAPD framed a guilty man. Mark Furhman is going to be frothing at the mouth tonight on FOX.

Number 1 and 2 mean nothing relative to today(for me at least).

Regardless of how you feel about Simpson, his 33 year prison sentence in the armed robbery case was bullshit. He only received that sentence, I believe, because he was found not guilty in the murder case. His sentence should have been a maximum of 10 years. He is getting out of prison about when he should have been.

Parole in general in this country can be a pretty fucked up prospect. While we all nominally understand how parole works in this country, the process is different state to state, and those differences can produce differing results. The appointments to the parole boards are sometimes controlled by the Governor of a state. The politics of a chief executive can often wind up overriding the correct decision of a parole board.

How the 2000 Election in Florida Led to a New Wave of Voter Disenfranchisement

Was a little shocked when we first ran into that on FL voter registration drives. (The shocking part was how “normal” and unremarkable it was in the communities.) Even Alabama has a much more rational and fair approach to felon’s rights, thanks to a local ex-con pastor who has been busting the state’s chops for years.

I looked up the Nevada parole board members. All of them have been appointed by Gov. Sandoval, but all of them have educational, legal, or training backgrounds that I feel would support going into that hearing today predisposed to granting parole. As in they probably knew the armed robbery sentence was incorrect on the merits, and they were going to correct it today. A reminder that he did have a parole hearing in 2013 where it was denied.

I mean, the argument itself is a false premise to begin with. A ‘fake’ vote doesn’t magically invalidate a real one, and it doesn’t magically count all one way. That’s just not how it fucking works at all. Add on top the rarity as you pointed out, we’re still stuck with the same solution in search of a problem that this has been from the bloody start.

It’s Disneyland to the Disneyeth power as far as the crowds go. It takes all day, or sometimes camping from the day and night before to do almost anything worth doing there.

Not surprising that the extreme Right hates the fact that universities (except those run by Rightwingers) teach such “controversial” topics as evolution. They prefer the electorate to be dumb and get its worldview from Breitbart and Fox News.

Oh lookie! I got a letter from Bernie Sanders asking me to sign up for an ‘aggressively progressive’ newsletter. Oh, goodie! It comes with a postage paid reply envelope so I can send money, and a nice clean white surface on the back of the subscription card so that I can send them a nice reply telling them that it’s cool to be progressive, but it’s stupid to lose elections over it. Go home, Bernie.

The executive summary for this report should read something like this:

The Trump administration has been a world-class shit-show since well before inauguration day. The fact that the most important issue from that day in Trump’s tiny mind was delusions about his crowd size compared to Obama’s crowd size was an exceedingly accurate portent of everything that was to come after.

Trump is completely incapable of being either truthful or non-criminal. His every waking moment is devoted to narcissistic delusions, with occasional interruptions for lies and criminality. Hunter S. Thompson once famously noted that Nixon was so crooked he needed a servant to screw him into his pants each morning. Trump makes Nixon look like the best parts of Christ, Buddha, Confucius and Mohammed synthesized.

Nothing in US Federal politics can be remotely close to normal or acceptable until Trump is impeached and removed from office, and Republicans and his voters are fully remorseful for the damage that they have done by supporting this abomination.

Trump wants a talk-radio host to be the USDA’s chief scientist

Yesterday, the Trump administration formally named its candidate for the Department of Agriculture’s undersecretary of research, education, and economics, a post that serves as the agency’s chief scientist. Its choice? Sam Clovis, who has no scientific background but is notable primarily for having been a conservative talk-radio host. If approved by the Senate, the US’ attempts to understand climate change’s impact on agriculture will be led by someone who called climate research “junk science.”

Clovis, who has also taught economics and management at an Iowa liberal arts college, was an early supporter of Trump’s candidacy. He’s been working at the USDA as a White House advisor since shortly after Trump’s inauguration. Suggestions that he’d be nominated to this position have been circulating for a while, but his official nomination only came yesterday.

….

In 2014, when Clovis was running for senate in Iowa, he did an interview with the state’s public radio station in which he was asked about climate change. After the interviewer highlighted the widespread acceptance of climate change within the scientific community, Clovis responded by saying, in effect, that scientists were trying to fool him. “I have looked at the science, and I have enough of a science background to know when I’m being boofed,” he said. (Pro Publica checked and found that Clovis had never even taken an undergraduate level course in any science.)

This is in part due to any semi qualified person telling him to go fuck himself.

As far as I know the company that runs the SDCC only runs it, Wondercon, and the Alternative Press Expo.

I always wondered about that…thinking maybe there was a west and east versions. I never thought to look into it until I saw the comments here today. Thanks.

FCC Commissioner Ajti Pai instituted an obsolete rule (the “UHF Discount” rule) whose only benefit was to aide fascist operation Sinclair Broadcasting’s illegitimate purchase of Tribune Broadcasting.

Lumpy would have been far too stupid to think of such a crooked move.

True and Pai is trying to do away with Net Neutrality too.

Paid Off’s killing of Net Neutrality is a 100% slam dunk fait accompli. He’s corrupt in every which way but Sunday.

I have a hope that should that happen some very creative types will create an alternate net or something that allows us to get around the big companies. Whenever there is a chance for money to be made, someone will step up.

Who knows, maybe there will be Amazon Net, or NetX run by someone like Elon Musk.

Quick vacation anecdote:

Making a sand castle with my 6yo who insists on using dry sand. I tell her to go closer to the water to get the wetter sand. She insists and I tell her I have 35 years of experience and she should take my advice.

She builds her dry-sand castle and it falls over quickly.

I turn to my wife and tell her this is what Hillary must feel like.

You’re much more optimistic than I could ever be. We’re headed for the literal Dark Ages as Paid Off greedily counts the millions he pockets from Sinclair and Comcast.

I’m not sure how that would work. I have to connect to the Internet through my telephone company. Therefore my telephone company can restrict where I go (including Amazon if they were to set up some competing service).

Moreover, Amazon could itself restrict access through its own service.

Setting up a competing Internet would require setting up all the infrastructure already present in the Internet. That would be a massive expenditure to set up something that already exists. All I can see would happen is that existing corporations will work to carve out their own little bubbles on the Internet where they allow some things and deny others, all originally paid for with tax money.
