Here We Go Again: Sessions Discussed Trump Campaign Matters With Russian Ambassador, Contrary to Sworn Testimony

Time for your weekly Washington Post bombshell
Politics • Views: 34,833

We already knew that Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions had uh, forgotten his meetings with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the Trump campaign, but today we find out that even when he finally copped to those meetings, he still wasn’t telling the whole truth.

Because it turns out that US intelligence agencies were monitoring Kislyak’s communications with Russia officials, and he told them he had indeed discussed campaign-related issues with Sessions.

Russia’s ambassador to Washington told his superiors in Moscow that he discussed campaign-related matters, including policy issues important to Moscow, with Jeff Sessions during the 2016 presidential race, contrary to public assertions by the embattled attorney general, according to current and former U.S. officials.

[…]

One U.S. official said that Sessions — who testified that he has no recollection of an April encounter — has provided “misleading” statements that are “contradicted by other evidence.” A former official said that the intelligence indicates that Sessions and Kislyak had “substantive” discussions on matters including Trump’s positions on Russia-related issues and prospects for U.S.-Russia relations in a Trump administration.

Sessions has said repeatedly that he never discussed campaign-related issues with Russian officials and that it was only in his capacity as a U.S. Senator that he met with Kislyak.

“I never had meetings with Russian operatives or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign,” Sessions said in March when he announced that he would recuse himself from matters relating to the FBI probe of Russian interference in the election and any connections to the Trump campaign.

I can’t believe that I am still using the word unbelievable.

I know what would happen in an honest administration but what happens in this one?

Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended his honor before the Senate Intelligence Committee, rejecting the “appalling and detestable lie” that “I participated in any collusion that I was aware of, any collusion with the Russian government to hurt this country, which I have served with honor for 35 years, or to undermine the integrity of our democratic process.”

It seems more and more like the Russians played the Trumpistas like a fiddle. They knew how these snakes would lie about meetings with Russian contacts, and are now in the process of slowly leaking the truth bit by bit to undermine not only Trump but the entire US political system.

Talk about a long game.

Florida Teens Will Face Charges after Filming a Man Drowning in a Retention Pond and Uploading It to Social Media

Essentially, four teenagers last week filmed a disabled father of two drowning in a retention pond, and commented and laughed until he sank below the wastewater.

Initially, the sheriff did not bring charges though the teens were identified immediately, because he said there was nothing in Florida law he could charge them with.

The prosecutor did some digging, and came up with a law that applies to medical examiners, that requires reporting of a death to officials. The teens did not do that, the law is written as “persons” not medical examiners, so the prosecutor had them charged under that statute. He says this will be a test case for Florida.

Never.

A kakistocracy (English pronunciation: /kækɪsˈtɑkɹəsi/) is a state or country run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens. The word was coined as early as 1600s. It was also used by English author Thomas Love Peacock in 1829.

Some points:

1. The WaPo link deadends at their paywall: any way around this?

2. Much as I’d love to see ol’ Jeff get booted back to Alabama (if not Guantanamo) in disgrace, the WaPo “bombshell”, as linked, seems just a tad on the thin side. I mean, I’m sure it’s all true (I have exactly zero doubt-benefits to donate to this abominable Administration), but these allegations would look a lot better with something a little more substantial than “officials said” for attributions ( tho I know that’s not always possible).

3. I wonder what sort of Twitter ragegasm this is going to elicit from you-know-who: either a full-bore (lunatic) defense, or an excuse to fire Sessions’ sorry Confederate ass?

That it happened could also be related to the victim being from Australia where you assume (correctly) that the police are not going to shoot you when you call for help.

I’m glad the prosecutor dug around till he found a suitable statute. In Texas, failure to summon aid is a crime so they could have been charged here. Failure to render aid is also a crime if it can be shown that doing so would not be unduly hazardous. Too bad it’s not illegal to raise a pack of savages or the parents could be charged too.

Based on what I’ve witnessed in watching Sessions operate for years, it wouldn’t surprise me if he thinks he’s above the law because, after all, he is Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, and in Alabama, that means something. Sessions has been a fraud for years, and most voters in Alabama still think he’s an honorable man. Imagine that!

Neither did I, fern. I read it as business as unusual in America. It’s a shame, but it’s so true that millions of Americans think the lives of some of us are more valuable than others’ lives. What I’ve noticed about Ms. Damond’s case is that no one on the Right side of the political divide is blaming her for her own death, calling her a thug, or saying other disparaging things about her, but when George Zimmerman gunned down Trayvon Martin, many on the Right blamed the poor child for his own demise. There was no sympathy expressed for him, and he was a child.

I particularly like the $0.99 I got the State of Indiana to refund me for some pricing error they made on vehicle registrations years ago that belatedly got corrected.

Where does Gov. Abbott fit in all of this?

State Governors appoint the replacements for US Senators who do not complete their terms, for whatever reason. Unless otherwise specified, I think Texas is one of the majority of states that require the replacement Senator to stand for reelection at the next General Election to serve out (if reelected) the remainder of the original Senator’s term.

It’s Texas: G8d knows what awful wingnut Abbott might appoint - Senator Louie Gohmert, anyone?

It seems more and more like the Russians played the Trumpistas like a fiddle. They knew how these snakes would lie about meetings with Russian contacts, and are now in the process of slowly leaking the truth bit by bit to undermine not only Trump but the entire US political system.

Talk about a long game.

OR… Someone tied to Trump leaked it so there’s an excuse to fire Sessions to instill a new AG who hasn’t recused himself and can tell Mueller to take a hike.

Not to go all CT and such but trust is low. Everywhere.

Russia didn’t play Trump like a fiddle, they played conservative politicians and voters like a fiddle. Any corrupt bigot would have done for them. Hell, if Steve Bannon had run, the GOP voters probably would have gone for him.

Some. But not as many. Trump had a reputation. And a personality. All bullshit of course but there nonetheless. Bannon wouldn’t have won. Trump won in his name and celebrity.

Judging from pictures of its construction, it does not have a complete hull, and was never intended to be seaworthy. Plus, there was a notable lack of the magical gopherwood needed to build a floating zoo.

But, it could be reassembled on a barge to join all the other floating “riverboat” casinos on the Ohio, which never actually cruise the river but are permanently moored in their home ports. Amazing little loophole in the casino gambling laws of those states.

A far better use would be to reuse the lumber to build Habitat houses, instead of immortalizing Ken Ham’s monument to his own vanity.
