Donald Trump’s Horribly Inappropriate Speech to the Boy Scout Jamboree Violated the BSA’s Own Code of Conduct

Donald Trump continues to plumb new depths in horrible behavior, with a nasty political speech to the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree. You can watch the whole thing above, but here are some tweets that will let you know what was happening if you can’t stand watching this disgusting person.

LGF contributor “Wheatdogg” points out that this was an egregious, outrageous violation of the BSA’s own Code of Conduct:

When I was involved as a Scout leader, I had the impression the BSA was apolitical, despite its conservative leanings. The national leadership needs to be read the riot act to allow Trump to politicize a Jamboree.

From the BSA Scouters Code of Conduct

5. I will respect and abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Boy Scouts
of America, BSA policies, and BSA-provided training, including but
not limited to, those relating to:
a. Unauthorized fundraising activities
b. Advocacy on social and political issues, including prohibited use of
the BSA uniform and brand
c. Bullying, hazing, harassment, and unlawful discrimination
of any kind

(PDF page iv)

From the Rules and Regulations:

Participation in Public Functions
Scouters must, when practicable, cooperate in
connection with civic or other public gatherings of
a nonpartisan and nonpolitical character in a way
that gives youth members an opportunity to
render service in harmony with their training
instead of merely taking part in parades in their
uniforms.

(PDF p. 5)

Policy Concerning Political Questions
The Boy Scouts of America must not, through its
governing body or through any of its officers,
chartered councils, Scouters, or members, involve
Scouting in political matters. However, this must
not be interpreted to prevent the teaching of ideals
of patriotism and good citizenship as required to
fulfill the Boy Scouts of America’s purpose.

(PDF p. 6) ibid.

If you’re on Twitter, please retweet this to let the BSA know you won’t accept this horrible display.

Not at all upset at the kids, nor even the jamboree organizers if they can claim to have been blind-sided. But if this crap isn’t loudly disavowed, somebody needs to take the fall.

the boy scouts have always been a kind of american paramilitary organization. societally, we’ve never really wanted to train 14 year-olds to engage in small unit tactics with actual weapons, but much of what scouts do trains them to do that kind of stuff. so the fact that they get together at a rally and cheer the fuhrer isn’t really all that surprising.

tr*mp and the GOP are a cancer on the nation. Here we have a blatant attempt to corrupt the BSA into serving the RWNJ agenda.

Just for fun, imagine the RWNJ howls of outrage had President Obama tried to get boy scouts to lobby in favor of the ACA.

Trump also pressed Price to win the support of West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R), who has expressed skepticism of the GOP plan due to its drastic cuts to Medicaid. A few hours earlier, Trump claimed Senate Republicans had “not done their job in ending the Obamacare nightmare.”

“He’d better get Senator Capito to vote for it,” the president said of Price.

‘We could really use some more loyalty, I will tell you that,” Trump told the crowd of Scouts.

The only way the BSA can be taught a lesson over this is to withhold support unless an apology is received from the national organisation. If they won’t give it, they are unredeemable.

From the previous thread:

re: #280 TedStriker

I see that, as LGF’s friendly neighborhood Scouter, I’m gonna take a lot of heat for Trump being an ass at the National Jamboree and (some of) those in attendance acting just as much like asses…and that’s OK.

Right now, as a lowly assistant Scoutmaster, I don’t see much I can really think to do right now, other than as DD said, which is to write letters directed up the chain.

Again, I’m so mortified right now.

I’m not bashing on you. You can protest, and if they don’t apologise, you can leave. That said,

re: #289 Anymouse 🌹

I’m glad the Boy Scouts threw me out when I was a teen for being an atheist after seeing this disgusting display.

An organisation built on bigotry can only maintain itself through hatred. Whereas the Girl Scouts are becoming more inclusive, the Boy Scouts are becoming more hateful.

I was devastated when the Boy Scouts threw me out. I’d already been banned from certain events because I did not have a father to attend with me. My mother pointed out that I would remember their treatment one day, because I would see them do it again.

I have mixed feelings about the boy scouts organization. Much of what they do is good, but they are more political than they say they are, and those politics tilt RWNJ.

Vigilance by BSA national leadership is needed to prevent the BSA from becoming some kind of fuhrer-jugend.

Now would be an excellent time to demonstrate said vigilance.

They’ve been like this for a long, long time. Like the GOP, they operated in dog whistles and code. Their own inner RWNJ is coming out now.

My banning from the BSA for my (lack of) religious beliefs is precisely why when my son was old enough to enquire about joining himself, I was able to tell him that the BSA “doesn’t want our kind.” My son never joined.

Our troop meetings were held in a Baptist church. One of my Scoutmasters was an Evangelical preacher. I saw the writing on the wall when I was a Cub Scout, that I was going to be shunned one way or another down the road because I never went to church on Sunday when all the other Scouts around me did. I’m surprised I made it all the way to the Life rank before I was shunned, to be honest.

The church was across the street from us. In Philly. The troop was in the basement. My parents either by purpose or whatever always had me do the walk. You want it? Go. Get it. I was told at the age of 9 by the “adults” there that I was “not the type of “person” they needed.” They turned me down. Out. LEAVE. And I was not alone. My grade school buddy was rejected the next night. Imagine that. No parents, and you cowboy up and walk into that at 9 fucking years old and get shit on. Story of my young life…. Formative years…

Thing is I have *great memories* of this place. It’s where I learned to shoot a rifle. It’s where I slept outside in a teepee for a week, where I saw a bear for the first time. The epic games of capture the flag, all the things I learned about wilderness travel, the horseback rides into the backcountry for some fishing, I could go on.

“Mom? I want to join the Cub Scouts”…Ok. Good luck. You know what to do. And I did. I went to the Methodist church to sign up. I was like 8 1/2 freaking years old.

In the end it’s all about the bear.

Boy Scouts Allow Transgender Scouts, Still Ban Atheists
patheos.com

All that said, it’s worth pointing out that the BSA still bans openly atheist scouts from joining the organization at any level. The Scouting Oath calls on boys “To do my duty to God and my country” while Scout Law honors “reverence.” If leaders find out you’re an atheist, they can kick you out (and they’ve done just that).

(Story of a person who was a Boy Scout, spent two decades as a leader, then was told to sever all ties with the organisation because he could not be an effective role model as an atheist.)

I’m married to a basketball coach and I don’t have time for the urban super mom life. My two boys each get to pick one activity, no more.

Both of them came home from school at one time or another wanting to do Scouts. I told them that would be it, there will only be one. The oldest cared more about theater, youngest, basketball. No Scouts.

I was relieved. I don’t think our boys would fit well in the organization for a lot of reasons. But my best friend, an agnostic to the core, was an Eagle Scout and feels scouting was very good for him as a kid.

So, I’m highly ambivalent and glad the boys chose other interests.

And fuck Donald Trump, of course.

This is going to hurt Scouting. Every adult leader needs to immediately do everything possible to denounce this behavior and distance themselves from it.

It’ll wind up becoming a Junior NRA with a smaller, more hyperpartisan membership base with wealthy benefactors like the Koch brothers.

Cheechako  Jul 24, 2017 • 6:05:47pm

I was also a Scout many years ago. Didn’t last very long. Every time we went on a camp-out, it rained. Miserable experience.

When my boys were growing up I got roped into being a Cub Master followed by being the Troop Scoutmaster. No-one else was willing to take the job. Plenty of “We’ll be here to help, but…”. The worst part was living in a college town with plenty of single moms going to college who wanted “a positive male influence on their young boys”. Of course they never had time to pitch in and help.

The part I dreaded most was the annual one week camping trip at the Council’s Scout Ranch.

One or two dads/moms would volunteer to go along but when the time came they always had other thing that were more important to do. I was terrified being the only adult (male) camping with a dozen or so young boys. The shower were gang showers so I never showered with the boys. I was scared shit-less some kid would make unfounded accusations of wrong doing. At night I had to keep my distance from where the boys camped.

After two seasons of this crap I quit scouting altogether.

I achieved Life rank in the Scouts and was kicked out because I declared myself an agnostic to my troop. My Scoutmaster asked me in front of everybody “Do you believe in God, do you believe in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?” I said “I don’t know.” “If you don’t answer in the affirmative, you don’t belong in the Scouts.” I won’t ever forget it. It was embarrassing. I was 13. I’m an atheist now.

So yeah, with all due respect to former Scouts here at LGF, fuck the Boy Scouts. And fuck Fuckface Von Clownstick.

The Scouting Oath as its treated is you must have a belief in a god. Doesn’t matter which god (which is why there are scouting organisations around the world). But the god part is a must. Without that, you can be denied membership or kicked out if discovered.

Judaism is fine. Jews believe in a god. However, with the Hitler Youth rally Trump held this afternoon, if I was a Jewish (or Muslim) scout I’d be headed for the exits.

The same is true of America should we come to fight one another over these mounting authoritarian excesses. In our case a small or a prolonged civil war render the same result.

While local leaders may interpret the by-laws of the Boy Scouts as they choose, the by-laws remain in place. Switch leaders, move to a different place, someone up higher gets pissed off, and -boom- the atheist is out.

Best recommendation for parents with atheistic children is to inform them “they do not want our kind.” Regardless of the kindness of the individual Scoutmaster, the rules are “no atheists.”

I wonder how many parents had a talk with their kids about what Trump was saying, how many talked about the possibility of losing their insurance, or the fact that others would be losing it, and that Trump was very unpresidential? I know the number is greater than zero.

Part of me believes McCain has had a wakeup call with his cancer. Maybe he will think of others less fortunate than him who will actually have to pay out of their pockets for any sort of treatment that will likely not be as good as his… and vote NO on Trumpcare.

The rest of me realizes it’s John McCain and he always votes the party line.

The guy has yet another chance to be a hero (of sorts) for his country. We all know he’s going to throw away everything he’s already lost.

As a reminder …

New findings, for instance, show that the Trump Foundation’s largest-ever gift — $264,631 — was used to renovate a fountain outside the windows of Trump’s Plaza Hotel.

Its smallest-ever gift, for $7, was paid to the Boy Scouts in 1989, at a time when it cost $7 to register a new Scout. Trump’s oldest son was 11 at the time. Trump did not respond to a question about whether the money was paid to register him.

It’s time for Banjo to have a younger brother. It’ll be interesting having two cattle dogs in the house, but I remember Banjo’s puppy days. He’d run to the door and bark to be let out, and as I walked over he’d look up as if to say, “Never mind” and pee on the floor in front of the door. That didn’t last too long…he was a fast learner.

I was a Jew Scout. Loved the hiking.

The objective here is to enter essentially a blank bill, and McConnell then switches in an amendment which becomes the bill (and wipes out any amendments proposed by Democrats).

Don’t be fooled: This is the real thing. Republicans will vote for anything (see the earlier comment today by Richard Burr … apparently he would vote to castrate himself and sell his wife into sex slavery with Islamic State, as he said he would “vote for anything”).

All they care about are two things: a) Their racist desire to wipe President Obama from the history books, and 2) more tax cuts for those who don’t need them.

I did my part to keep up the pressure today, even if it was only calling my shitbag Senators, Cruz and Cornyn. I called both in their south TX and DC offices, and let them know that the American people will remember their votes tomorrow. I also shared my personal story about my mom being denied coverage after her breast cancer diagnosis. I have my script ready and will call again first thing in the morning, FWIW.

Tomorrow I will call Cruz and Cornyn while my son is taking his driving test.

It all comes down to:
Lee
Murkowski
Heller
Portman
Capito
Moran

My unedumacated scorekeeping, which sometimes means as much as the paid “experts” at times:

Lee — easy yes. Grandstanding about how the bill isn’t bad enough for his own tastes won’t matter, esp. if it’s a bait-and-switch. Honestly, Rand could do the same.
Murkowski — either a no or abstain
Heller — likely cave
Portman — DEFINITE cave, even if it makes the Sanctimonious AF John Kasich even more of a goddam political dynamo in Ohio. FFS.
Capito — likely cave
Moran — likely cave

Either way, we’re fucked tomorrow.

Just occurred to me that we may finally (after 10 years) see Julian Assange release a “leaked” Russian document: Plans for a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States if Trump is about to be removed from office.
The putative rationale would be to keep rabidly anti-Russian atheist/gay/journalist forces from consolidating their control and threatening the Motherland. The real purpose, of course, would be to intimidate Trump opponents with a terrifying bluff.

I had that sit down with my mother when I was thirteen or so, when the Scouts threw me out.

“They don’t want our kind” has stuck with me my whole life. I never forgot her attempts at trying to console me.

I passed that on to my son before he joined, sparing him the Boy Scouts cruel treatment of those not like themselves. “We are not their kind.” He never joined after he learned why I was banned. The BSA for all its alleged goodness covers its bigotry well. It is not worthy of support until it changes, and it won’t.

I am sorry you have to do this with your son. I guarantee you the BSA will not renounce this Nuremberg rally of children today.

The key will be in the next day or so. We know Trump is a fool. What to watch for is how the BSA responds to this.

So far, the only response has been to delete negative comments from their Facebook wall.

I would really like to see the inclusive and caring Girl Scouts open themselves up to all children interested in Scouting. They can call themselves “The Scouts.”

Perhaps I am wrong about how the BSA will respond to this, but I don’t think so.

What Trump did today was heinous, however, the real test of character for the BSA is how they respond. Since they went to court to keep atheists out of their group, I am not hopeful.

Scared of their shadows? That describes the Faux news audience to a T. They could easily be induced to pressure GOP senators to remain loyal and not vote for removal or, at an earlier stage, to call in all markers and sacrifice all future cooperation to stop an investigation and impeachment. The investigation is where we are now, and we are already seeing this line of attack. The idea is not to frighten Mueller or even Congress, they know better, but to frighten the base.
After all, these are people who believe that crime is spinning out of control when it has actually declined by nearly half since 1980.

The rules still apply in the BSA. All it takes is one official in the BSA and out you go (hence the court fight mounted and lost against the BSA).

The rules are clear that you must believe in a monotheistic god. While a particular scoutmaster or such might not enforce that rule, a superior might, or the next one might, or if you move the next group might, &c.

Not being pressed on the issue doesn’t mean that they can’t. All it takes is one objection by a wingnut and that’s it. (I wasn’t ousted by my scoutmaster: I was ousted by folk above him. The rules haven’t changed.)

MICHAEL ZUCCHET, SAN DIEGO CITY COUNCIL: Let me just read you from the judge’s statement. He says, “Not only does the Boy Scouts of America concede that it is a religious organization, but it insists that its religion is, in fact, fundamental to its purpose and mission.”

Secular alternatives to the Boy Scouts of America:

quora.com

A group that encourages discrimination, that has bigotry as national policy, and that goes to court to fight to keep discriminating, is not a group that deserves your membership. Those who support the opportunities in the Boy Scouts and who wish to have positive impact can do so through a number of other groups, and the quickest way to push the Boy Scouts to change their policy would in fact be for all of those people at the local levels who DON’T support discrimination to give an ultimatum and then walk away if the Scouts refuse to end the discrimination. Meanwhile, demand that Congress stop all government funding of the Scouts — would we be okay with our tax dollars continuing to support a group that went to court to fight for their right to refuse admittance to blacks and Jews because they believe those people are inferior?

More at the link, with alternatives to the Boy Scouts.

Bitching at the BSA does not work; it never has. Like anything else, what will work is if people leave.

Boy Scouts kept secret files to help alleged child molesters cover their tracks.

How is that different from the Catholic Church?

A Los Angeles Times review of 1,600 confidential files dating from 1970 to 1991 has found that Scouting officials frequently urged admitted offenders to quietly resign — and helped many cover their tracks.

Volunteers and employees suspected of abuse were allowed to leave citing bogus reasons such as business demands, “chronic brain dysfunction” and duties at a Shakespeare festival.

The details are contained in the organization’s confidential “perversion files,” a blacklist of alleged molesters, that the Scouts have used internally since 1919. Scouts’ lawyers around the country have been fighting in court to keep the files from public view.

Seth Meyers just did a segment on a WSJ piece about Sean Spicer. According to the report, Spicer wanted a mini fridge so he too the white house staff’s fridge late one night.

You’d think that a press secretary’s salary could pay for that or maybe Spieey is just a ladron.

Re-purposing it. Quite different, since he ranked higher. It’s just socially normal where they are. (Mooch, of course, would have done it sooner.)
