Scrambling to work with a Trump administration, when the traditional structure of government is absent. Basically forget public servants, politicians need to visit regularly and curry favour.
A report has called for new public service approaches for Australian government dealings with the United States, suggesting traditional bureaucratic practices and diplomatic traditions will prove ineffective with the Trump White House.
Sydney University’s United States Studies Centre has called for personal engagement with key Trump Administration figures and senior members of Congress to be prioritised over traditional diplomatic overtures by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as “bureaucratic dysfunction” sets in at the US State Department because of staff vacancies and political turf wars.
It says inter-agency process, including those established with DFAT, are absent and action by Australian public servants and diplomats will be less effective because key American personnel are not in place or are holdovers from the Obama administration and not respected by Trump appointees.
DFAT actions through embassies in Canberra or Washington are less likely to filter up the chain to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson when necessary, made worse by Mr Trump’s delay in naming an ambassador to Canberra and a politically weakened State Department.
“Australian bureaucrats have been hampered in engaging their American counterparts by the lack of appointments to senior Trump administration roles, a weak State Department and an inter-agency process that has limited influence over the president’s decisions,” the report said. …..the Trump administration’s modus operandi does not reward deep bureaucratic engagement by foreign officials.

Definitely no offense detected. I like the Kennedy quote and considering the Sessions mess and the BSA debacle it seems like a good time to give it some eyes. Donald Trump has frequently railed against those leaking information, especially intelligence material, to the media.
Now, however, it appears the president himself has inadvertently confirmed the existence of a covert CIA programme.
Mr Trump issued a series of tweets attacking the Washington Post on Monday evening, including one that referred to a story about the termination of US efforts to aid rebels fighting to oust Syria’s President Bashar Assad.
Mr Trump is reported to have made the decision nearly a month ago, after an Oval Office meeting with national security adviser H.R. McMaster and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Report Says Missile Defense Test Failed Because Sailor Pushed The Wrong Button
According to Defense News, the test’s failure occurred because a sailor in charge of tactical data links inside the Combat Information Center aboard the USS John Paul Jones—the Navy’s ballistic missile defense test ship—pressed a button that resulted in the command self-destruct of the experimental missile as it was hurtling towards its target. The button in question is used to designate incoming targets as hostile or friendly. The sailor supposedly pushed “friendly” by accident which resulted in a data-link transmission to the missile to end its intercept immediately. It did just that by blowing itself to smithereens.

Incompetent and incapable of doing the job.
Trump hires only the best.
Check that, Trump hires only loyalists; competence is irrelevant— lawhawk (@lawhawk) July 25, 2017
Being incompetent is a prerequisite for being in this administration. It isn’t an excuse for seditious or other criminal activities.
And yet, the GOP continues covering for this administration all while they’re forging ahead with a bill that absolutely guts the safety net destroying Medicaid and Obamacare, all so they can rub out Obama’s signature legacy achievement.
That goes to the single minded nature of the GOP to redistribute wealth and benefits to the rich from everyone else. Their tax plans are the same. Even Trumpcare is a tax plan that guts health coverage for tens of millions of Americans (who are in bottom 50% of the income range) so that millionaires like Trump get fat tax breaks.
Trump will sign anything put before him, because that’s what he cares about. He doesn’t care about what the repercussions of these bills are. He doesn’t care that he’s breaking all his campaign promises about how he’ll have more coverage for more people at lower cost than under Obamacare. That’s not what the GOP is doing - they’re simply repealing, because replacement is impossible. They’ve got vaporware despite 8 years of claiming they had a better way.
Turns out that has always been a lie. All the GOP has done on health care is lie. That’s all they’re still doing.
Pence is out front today spewing nonstop lies about how Trumpcare will be better than Obamacare, when the CBO savages the GOP plans and shows that Trumpcare will leave Americans other than the rich in a far worse off position. That’s a feature, not a bug with Pence, Trump, or the GOP.
The GOP response? They want to gut the CBO so that they can’t do proper scoring (that’s after they tried to force the CBO to change how they score so that they can make their shifty trickle down tax plans look better than they actually are).

Trump was going on this morning on Twitter about how he’s doing a trade deal with the UK and complaining that the EU is protectionist:
As always, Trump slams our allies and close trading partners - chaos here in the US and the disruptions he’s making to the international order benefit Putin and Russia.
But Trump is protectionist. Oh well…..
re: #98 Barefoot Grin
I wonder about the quality of Chinese chicken that’s supposedly now allowed into the US market. Makes a guy think seriously about becoming a vegetarian.
Fairly certain that Chinese chicken treats killed my Sami a few years ago. I’ll take a pass on the imports. (If they keep up the labelling requirements.)

re: #111 makeitstop
The whole BSA debacle has planted this song in my head.
The lyrics, for those unfamiliar:
The future teaches you to be alone
The present to be afraid and cold
“So if I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists”
Bullets for your brain today
But we’ll forget it all again
Monuments put from pen to paper
Turns me into a gutless wonder
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
Will be next, will be next, will be nextGravity keeps my head down
Or is it maybe shame
At being so young and being so vain
Holes in your head today
But I’m a pacifist
I’ve walked La Ramblas but not with real intent
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
And if you tolerate this then your children will be nextAnd on the street tonight
An old man plays with newspaper cuttings of his glory days
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next

Anyone think Trump will acknowledge he was out of line at the Boy Scout Jamboree and say he was sorry?
Yeah, I can’t believe I typed that too.
I look at it as Trump turning off more and more people in a bipartisan way. Sooner or later he might start to make it extremely* clear he is killing the Republican party and they are going to have to do something about it.
*It is already pretty clear he is hurting them, these are not normal times. These are extreme times.

I think the only way they’ll worry about him within the GOP is when he becomes poison to the base. Right now, Trump is more popular with the GOP base than the other GOP elected officials are.

Ah. That puts us in the situation of dialing-in a percentage by variably defining “Nazi”. If we make it broad enough, we’re at c.30%. Narrow enough, and we’re in better shape. Reducing that, many of the generation that fought the Nazis might be defined as Nazish.

For what it’s worth: A Copy and Paste from CandL:
The Mormons took over the BSA, long ago, and turned it into a drooling conservafilth hate cult.
My former mother-in-law had been a Cub Scout den mother for decades. But because she wasn’t christfilth, they told her she could no longer be in charge of anymore troops. She cried for hours over being betrayed that way.
When these traitorous trash declared that no atheists were welcome in their organization, my atheist ex, an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, sent back all of his awards/badges, and told them what they could do with them for insulting all of his hard work in their worthless club. He also canceled the thousands of dollars a year he sent to them through his CFC. When they called him to plead with him not to cancel the money, he said he’d donate again when they stopped being deluded bigots. Until then, they could fuck right off.
And he’s never given a dime to them since.

Remember, as the anti-politician, DT is somehow exempt from the rules and conventions that govern politics for nearly everyone else. Starting with conflict of interest issues…
But as long as he is President and his party has a majority of Congress, do not look for him to be called to face consequences for anything. At most, he will toss a few of his own people under the bus and then whine about how they were victims of an unfair witch hunt.
I’ve been trying to call Robby Portman’s Columbus Office all morning to get in one more vote no to him, but his line has been busy the entire time.

I agree with you, I definitely think there is probably room for a new organization. I think the Boy Scouts actually get critiqued from both directions in a way that isn’t necessarily incompatible. Many people compare the skills taught in the old Scouts and existing Scouts and find them a bit lacking, at the same time the organization isn’t exactly friendly and open to many demographics. It would be interesting if you could fuse together some of the old school skills with a more accepting social environment and updated values.

re: #60 HappyWarrior
I meant to wish you a Happy Birthday yesterday and missed it (family craziness and the like). Have fun and enjoy being 30!
So, don’t know how I missed this bit of pop-culture doggerel. Victor Willis is back with the Village People.
An out-of-court settlement reached in New York last week has ended a 10-year-legal battle between original Village People lead singer Victor Willis and Paris-based Scorpio Music and its U.S. affiliate, Can’t Stop Productions.
The out-of-court settlement, which was announced Tuesday, comes on the heels of oral arguments that took place May 11 before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena. A ruling on the appeal could still be made, if the appeal is not withdrawn. But it would have no effect on the binding settlement, which follows a precedent-setting 2012 music copyright case in a San Diego court.
As a result of last week’s settlement, Willis is set to rejoin the Village People. He co-founded the pioneering disco music group — best known for such enduring hits as “Y.M.C.A,” “In the Navy” and “Macho Man” — in 1977. He hopes to begin performing with the group by August, with a new album to follow.
“I’ve come full circle, back to something I started and created 40 years ago with the help of my partners,” Willis said in a Tuesday interview with the Union-Tribune.
I remember the Village People from my childhood - and yeah, Victor Willis is, for me at least, the one and only voice of the group.

But that is secondary.

They kept us as slaves: AP reveals claims against church
SPINDALE, N.C. (AP) — When Andre Oliveira answered the call to leave his Word of Faith Fellowship congregation in Brazil to move to the mother church in North Carolina at the age of 18, his passport and money were confiscated by church leaders — for safekeeping, he said he was told.
Trapped in a foreign land, he said he was forced to work 15 hours a day, usually for no pay, first cleaning warehouses for the secretive evangelical church and later toiling at businesses owned by senior ministers. Any deviation from the rules risked the wrath of church leaders, he said, ranging from beatings to shaming from the pulpit.
Just had one of those “Ah hah!” moments. Last year I walked by a group of panhandlers, apparently a family, on my way into a mall in Weatherford. There was a couple and 3 small children. They had a well crafted sign in perfect English informing passersby that the man had lost his job and they needed money for milk for the children. A security guard was trying to talk to the group in Spanish, he had apparently already tried English. They didn’t seem to understand Spanish either, at least not well to really communicate. I recognized something in the man’s accent though and offered to help. I translated the security guard’s English warning into Portuguese. Sure enough, the family was Brazilian. I told them they had to leave because what they were doing was illegal. I also asked how they had gotten the sign. The man said it came from “a church.” He did not really know what it said. I tried to give them the address of my church’s outreach program, which was close by and could help with food but they wouldn’t hear of it. The security guard called, not the police, but CPS because the group had children out in the heat begging. The group piled into the minivan and left. The vehicle had North Carolina license plates.
