It is sad that McCain gives a powerful statement on the Senate floor and then proves, once again, that he is all talk and no action. He could reclaim his reputation by doing what is right, but that appears beyond his capability today — and perhaps since it’s been beyond him since he left the POW camp.

“Trump went on a lengthy diatribe about the supposed need to “liberate” cities in the United States from undocumented immigrants.

And he praised Immigration and Customs Enforcement for their crackdown on “bloodthirsty criminal gangs,” pointedly noting to a repulsively gleeful crowd, “We’re not doing it in a politically correct fashion.”

“We’re doing it rough,” he declared.

He rambled on about “our people” being “tougher and stronger than their people.”

And it was crystal clear who he meant by “their people,” and just what he thinks of most undocumented immigrants.”

I can’t say “fuck this guy” enough times. I really can’t.

From the “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” department:

A man attacked a sales clerk in a firearms shop he wanted to rob, but the clerk’s colleague shot him and the attacker died in hospital afterwards, the Prague police write on their website about an incident that occurred in the city’s centre on Monday.

The sales clerk was seriously injured, but his life is not endangered, Prague’s Military University Hospital spokeswoman Jitka Zinke told CTK.

The robber, aged 31, attacked the sales clerk with a knife late in the morning on July 24. He has a criminal history, including drug and violent crime, the police said.

It seems that the woman who shot and fatally injured the attacker acted in defence and did not commit any crime. However, the case is still under investigation, being qualified as a robbery and attempted murder.

TL;DR - man tries to rob a firearms shop with a knife. Literally the embodiment of the adage, “never bring a knife to a gunfight”.

“One day, we might receive a signal from a planet like this,” Hawking says in the documentary, referring to a potentially habitable alien world known as Gliese 832c. “But we should be wary of answering back. Meeting an advanced civilization could be like Native Americans encountering Columbus. That didn’t turn out so well.”

Thing is, unless an alien species has succeeded in bending over the laws of physics and giving them a work-out, there’s no way that any alien species that’s not already on its way here could answer our radio messages in a time span measured in something smaller than decades. So odds are if aliens show up on our doorstep, they were already on their way here and nothing we did made a difference.

I’ve gone on before about academics who become emeriti and their penchance to go wandering off into the intellectual wilderness.

Something similar happens to politicians in office, I propose, especially the Senate, where after enough decades, when they become very old, they just go off into their own definition of whatever adjective/adverb they want to use to describe themselves.

That our system is set up to create a hinderance to change - which is what the Senate effectively became - only makes it worse. This has been lamented many times in the 20th century, when Senators-for-life have proven to be roadblocks to what was needed, even as they had elaborate speeches of how great they were and all the great things they have done.

The whole Connecticut Compromise and its aftermath has been about adjusting our society to fit the whims of this or that group who, through one means or another, has enough power to hold back change.

Nature editorial on a new bit of research in Education:

The digital native is a myth

[…]

The generational difference between the groups goes beyond their numbers of Facebook friends and Twitter followers: it can also help to explain differences in how they buy insurance. At least, that’s according to a report released this week for the insurance industry. Targeting Millennials with Insurance explains that young people aren’t like those who came before and queued passively for cover. They “prioritize holidays”, for one, which might surprise some of them. Because they are digital natives, they “will favor technologically innovative insurance policies”.

But a paper published last month in Teaching and Teacher Education reaches the opposite conclusion. The digital native is a myth, it claims: a yeti with a smartphone. […]

Perhaps the Nature editorial is wrong in asserting that the paper on education refutes the claims of insurance advertising claim. The insurance conclusions could still be true even if one of the premises is false.

Here’s the paper on education:

The myths of the digital native and the multitasker

Highlights

• Information-savvy digital natives do not exist.
• Learners cannot multitask; they task switch which negatively impacts learning.
• Educational design assuming these myths hinders rather than helps learning.

Current discussions about educational policy and practice are often embedded in a mind-set that considers students who were born in an age of omnipresent digital media to be fundamentally different from previous generations of students. These students have been labelled digital natives and have been ascribed the ability to cognitively process multiple sources of information simultaneously (i.e., they can multitask). As a result of this thinking, they are seen by teachers, educational administrators, politicians/policy makers, and the media to require an educational approach radically different from that of previous generations. This article presents scientific evidence showing that there is no such thing as a digital native who is information-skilled simply because (s)he has never known a world that was not digital. It then proceeds to present evidence that one of the alleged abilities of students in this generation, the ability to multitask, does not exist and that designing education that assumes the presence of this ability hinders rather than helps learning. The article concludes by elaborating on possible implications of this for education/educational policy.

I think that has relevance to us in looking at our elections and voter turnout.

No matter how much opinion polls may show younger people being less conservative, and less likely to vote for Trump, we must not think that is wholly descriptive of what will happen in coming years.

Right after Trump was elected I posted a link to a historian who discussed that the whole arc of history narrative is just that - a narrative, not an inevitability.

Likewise, I propose, we must be careful to not fall into a myth of demography.

Unfortunately, especially given the voter disenfranchisement in red states, it may be necessary to appeal to these voters — but not on the race issue. For them, you can focus on the economics and attacks on big business and the banks.

OTOH: a direct quote from a gun fanatic friend: “I will say that one thing I enjoy about Trump is his implicit slogan: Screw Political Correctness.” His motivation for his support of Trump was anti-Hillary fanaticism. The biggest issue, imho, is employer mandate. Once that goes, so goes a lot of people’s healthcare. And they are thrown into something that will likely be unsustainable.

Eric Trump was going on about the same kind of thing:

The Trump and GOP are dehumanizing their opposition. It makes it far easier to deprive people of human and civil rights if you don’t consider them people.

It’s also easier to deprive 20-30 million people of health coverage if you don’t think they’re people or worth covering.

70
lawhawk  Jul 26, 2017 • 6:13:28am

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Eric Trump was on Faux News pumping out the agitprop about the economy and other issues.

He thinks the economy is going great thanks to his dad. That’s even though Trump hasn’t passed a budget or implemented any economic policy that would change the multi-year trajectory of economic growth. This is the economy he inherited from Obama. The same economy and policies he slammed all during the campaign.

So, of course Eric transitioned to how the economy is better for miners now that Trump’s in office.

That’s simply not true and the multidecade trend is that mining is a dying industry - fewer people are needed to do the same or greater output, and coal mines are closing because it doesn’t make economic sense to keep them open.

So what does a Trump twit think of these facts? They think that want ads showing need for position is proof that the industry is bouncing back.

Right.

Let’s go to an apt analogy. Sears and Macys are businesses that have been around for more than a century. They employ tens of thousands of people in 100s of stores. Except both are suffering because changed economic circumstances (Internet sales) are killing their businesses (both) and poor business decisions - like forgoing Internet sales in the first place when you started out as a mail-order business (Sears).

Both are closing 100s of stores and thousands of people are losing their jobs.

Despite that, both will continue hiring people for remaining stores and even hiring people for shutting down businesses. That’s how businesses operate. It doesn’t change the fact that hiring a handful overcomes the 1000s who lose their jobs.

This is the derp we’re up against. People who don’t understand facts, logic, or instead substitute their own idiocies for reality.

The same applies to the health care debate, where the GOP are pushing a plan that would strip coverage from 20-30 million Americans and the GOP calls this freedom. It’s the freedom to gain a medically induced bankruptcy so that a millionaire can retain a bigger paycheck or tax refund at the end of the year.

This is the craven GOP that Trump heads, and Trump will sign anything put before him (when he remembers why he’s even there to sign something in the first place).

Good metaphor, but discussions of how many lose coverage are understatements. The loss is not only to those who have coverage, but loss of eligibility for those who still have not joined up. There are millions of those still to be reached.

And reach those people before they permanently fall for both-sidesing and whataboutism, blame “both parties” and either 1) hear the double-headed siren song of Susan Sarandon and Jill Stein or 2) give up and live their lives in squalor and misery.

Trump thinking:

Trump reality:

He’s going to lose control of the House and Senate in ‘18 if he takes health care away from his base. There are not enough shiny objects, like kicking transfolk out of the military, to distract them for 16 months.

Is anyone even remotely surprised?

Tucked deep inside more than 200 pages of text is a tiny provision, recently added by the House Appropriations Committee, designed to defang the so-called Johnson Amendment — a section of the tax code that bars churches (a broad legal term that includes most faith groups) and other tax-exempt nonprofits from explicitly endorsing political candidates.

In its current form, the bill would effectively defund attempts by the IRS to take action against churches who violate the amendment by engaging in explicit political action. Any movement on the issue would necessitate a 90-day waiting period and require agents to notify two congressional committees and get sign-off from the head of the IRS. Nonprofits that lack a faith affiliation, meanwhile, would still be beholden to the amendment.

This isn’t the first attempt to hobble the statute. President Donald Trump has promised to “totally destroy” the Johnson Amendment, and weakened its enforcement in an executive order he signed back in May. The move, in turn, was celebrated by Religious Right leaders who have long championed repealing the provision as part of their “religious liberty” agenda, arguing it inhibits their free speech.

But experts say the GOP-led effort may be about something else, as the law is almost never enforced to begin with. Instead, the impetus for repealing the Johnson Amendment — especially quietly — may have less to do with ‘religious liberty’ and more to do with using religion as a means to create a new form of political power.

This is just stupid. That Democrats support LGBT service in the military is implicit, they don’t have to make it a key plank in their campaign to get the people who oppose these actions to vote for them. At best, it’s a gotcha question, or campaign attack add that is pretty easy to swat aside by wrapping oneself in the flag and appealing to patriotism, service and sacrifice. These are people who are willing and able to serve and sacrifice for their country and they are being denied the opportunity by small people who shirked their opportunity to serve.

Imagine feeling safer in a one-party oligarchy with constricted civil rights than in your own ostensibly democratic, free country. The irony is not lost on me.

Let’s just say I’m genuinely happy that I’m not living in the USA right now.

But it was his description of that process that was most revealing, and it got an appropriately bewildered look from host Chris Cuomo:

“Now, he’d be willing to accept a repeal-only bill. I actually think that’s the most likely bill to come out of the Senate is a repeal with a two-year delay that gives us two years to put the replacement pieces in. But I’ve always thought it would be wiser to bring them in, you know, one rifle shot at a time of the repairs that are there, rather than try to do it all in one bill.”

King just compared Trumpcare to a double tap. I couldn’t have said it better myself, other than to multiply that by hundreds of thousands.

I totally get it. I live in Canada now and appreciate people not wanting to come to the US. I am an old, white woman. I don’t expect many problems but even I am uncomfortable. I get it.

I am still an American patriot. I love America (for good and for bad) and when it’s bad, I want to do whatever I can to help make it better.

Nothing personal to Lupin or anyone else, but this is like my husband and his nine brothers and sisters. Only they can beat up a sibling. That’s what I’ve gotten from some people I debate online. As soon as they learn I live abroad, all my arguments are null and void. Somehow I am not an American if I don’t live in America.

Chinese expats have a similar problem. Even students coming back from a few years in the USA or UK are treated with suspicion or even disdain. Leaving China for study or work somehow makes them less Chinese in the eyes of nationalists.

Dad’s family came before Ellis Island. We know when my mom’s maternal grandparents came. Her dad’s parents too but have yet to locate teh record. It’s such a moving scene to me because that really could be anyone of our story’s. My mom’s maternal grandfather wasn’t even 18 years old when he left Slovakia for here.

My father’s family came illegally to avoid the Nazis in Poland. Thus, I am one of the people Rep. Steve King wants deported if the GOP can get their overturn of birthright citizenship.

I ain’t rich. Unlike the commentator above who described the USA as a “shithole” and those who say they are planning to leave, I can’t afford it. Moreover, no one would take me in as an immigrant anyway due to my epilepsy and lack of education or wealth. (And by the way, the USA is not a “shithole,” it has some shitheads. There is a difference. I imagine you can find those in any country.)

I had some out-of-stater challenge me at the gas station in the county seat yesterday. He demanded to know “what right” I had sporting Gold Star Family license plates on my car. (Usually when I get a question about them, they want to know who in my family died in warfare, then thanks me, which I find awkward but accept.) I’m guessing that came about because of my long hair and olive skin.

The assholes need to be pushed back (I am thinking of wearing Nazi triangles on my clothes for the next village board meeting - red for political enemy [socialist] and black for disabled [life unworthy of life]. I’ll let folks ask about those.)

Charles, it looks like LGF (and many other websites) will soon be banned in Russia.
Russia Passes Bill Banning Tor, VPNs
Excerpts (bolding is mine):

The Russian Federation Council has approved a bill that would outlaw the use of virtual private networks, the Tor network, anonymous mobile messaging services and internet proxy services in general.

The bill requires ISPs to block any websites that allow the use of VPN services. Lawmakers said that the move was prompted by concerns about the spread of terrorist-related materials; others said that the crackdown is a move to enforce censorship and limit dissent and political opposition.

It’s one thing to require ISPs to block particular kinds of internet services, but by my reading, this law goes FAR beyond that.

Names, photos, and home addresses of fighter pilots in the Air Force.
Names, photos, and home addresses of everybody in a police register, which are believed to be classified.
Names, photos, and residential addresses of all operators in the military’s most secret units that are equivalent to the SAS or SEAL teams.
Names, photos, and addresses of everybody in a witness relocation program, who has been given protected identity for some reasons.
Type, model, weight, and any defects in all government and military vehicles, including their operator, which reveals a much about the structure of military support units.

A group of concerned doctors, nurses, midwives, and hospital administrators, including CMQCC medical director Elliott Main, started a maternal mortality review board to pore over each death in detail and identify its root causes. Pretty quickly, hemorrhage and preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced severe high blood pressure) floated to the top of the list as the two most common — and preventable — causes of death.

It’s difficult to overstate how revolutionary this simple first step was in the arena of maternal health. About half of US states still don’t formally review the causes of maternal death on a regular basis to find out which deaths are preventable and how to stop future similar deaths from occurring. The US National Center for Health Statistics hasn’t even published an official maternal mortality rate since 2007 — that’s how low-priority this issue is.
