Law enforcement comes out against Texas “bathroom bill”

In a news conference Tuesday, big-city police chiefs called on lawmakers to reject the “bathroom bill,” saying the measure is discriminatory and does not keep the public safe.

The growing list of public officials who oppose Republicans’ efforts to regulate bathroom use for transgender Texans now includes law enforcement.

Police chiefs from three of the five biggest cities in the state gathered at the Texas Capitol on Tuesday to spurn proponents’ claims that such legislation is needed to protect privacy, arguing that proposals being considered by the Legislature are discriminatory, won’t keep people safe and would divert law enforcement resources.

“It may be great political theater,” said Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, “but it is bad on public safety.”

There was a post on my FB feed today about how some Republican finally let the mask slip and admitted on some radio show somewhere that their idea of “health insurance” is to cover catastrophic injury, and that regular doctor visits or elective procedures should be paid for in full by the patients. It’s a pretty clear view into what they want to accomplish by “free-market health care”.

re: #4 Timothy Watson

I’m still catching up on the last thread after getting home from work (where my crappy Internet won’t let me on LGF), but, since when could the POTUS unilaterally rewrite the UCMJ?

Well, LGBT issues are not part of the UCMJ.

That said, actually banning transgender servicemembers would likely require an executive order (one of those things wingnuts claimed they hated as anti-democratic). Twitter doesn’t count.

Lambda Legal and the ACLU have already said “see you in court” if he tries to turn his tweets into such an order.

Transgender service members already in the military can serve openly under a policy started during the Obama administration. While July 1 was scheduled to be the first day openly transgender individuals would be allowed to enlist, Secretary of Defense James Mattis asked for a six-month delay to allow the military to review the plan.

Josh Block, an attorney for the ACLU’s LGBT Project, said his inbox was “completely flooded” with messages from transgender people and their relatives and friends after Trump’s tweets. But he cautioned that it is extremely unclear if and how the Trump administration is going to move forward.

“There are still a lot of question marks on how literally and seriously to take this tweet,” he said. “If they take the really shocking step of pulling people off the battlefield and kicking them out because they are trans, they absolutely have to see us in court.”

If the tweets turn into policy, Block believes it would violate the Constitution’s equal protection clause and the Administrative Procedure Act. The APA protects individuals from “arbitrary or capricious” actions.

I try not to get discouraged, but when I see people I love and admire or artists I love and respect commit suicide or become more and more saddened by the madness we’re in, I find it hard to keep my chin up. It appears they are going piece by piece and making each change they wanted an amendment. Then they vote and it doesn’t pass. The vote tallies are different each time it appears as each Republican has a different thought on each amendment.

But overall it almost makes sure it all can’t pass because as the votes prior have shown, no one likes this as a total.

And, Mitch is making sure everyone can take names on each aspect and how they voted.

Mitch is making sure everyone is going to wear this. He is not going down alone. Everyone is. Even if this is passed you all get to know the details and who to vote against.

When does Mitch do a Boehner and say fuck it? I can always go back home and watch some Kentucky basketball and football, drink some bourbon and go to some Klan meetings out of the limelight.

Edit to add important detail: Kentucky basketball.

MrBWS and I are having our nightly Skype chat.

Bad news: brakes went out on his pickup truck heading back to his apartment after work and he went into the wall on the highway.

Good news: he’s OK and no other vehicles were involved.

He’s on the phone with a neighbor down the road who owns a junkyard and a rollback. He will be rescued sometime in the morning.

We ARE at the pitchfork/torch stage if millions of people lose their healthcare. Trump is piling it on with his absurd tweets about purging transgenders from the military.
The right wing is infected with fatal hubris.
The great flaw in their thinking is that they can count on the police, the military and, ultimately, their own private firearms to protect them and enforce their will when they tear up the Constitution and crap all over American principle.

For clarification, the CBO scored what is effectively McConnell’s blank paper tactic, right?

Basically. But I think this CBO score will make it harder to pass, because stripping 14 million of their health insurance right before a midterm is political suicide.

Trump opened this fucking door during his campaign rallies. He’s never once denounced any sort of violence, he’s encouraged it. Of course RW talk radio and TV have been doing this too, but I honestly cannot remember it being this blatant from politicians unless my memory has faded.

I try not to get discouraged, but when I see people I love and admire or artists I love and respect commit suicide or become more and more saddened by the madness we’re in, I find it hard to keep my chin up. I sometimes just don’t want to get out of bed, my own anxiety and depression have become notably worse over the last several months and being surrounded by red state toolbags isn’t helping.

Yay, Russian wants to invest in our healthcare system.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman’s LetterOne (L1) fund said on Monday it has launched L1 Health unit in the United States and is targeting up to $2-3 billion of investments in the global healthcare sector over the next three years.

The fund has been actively expanding abroad, investing in energy assets and other sectors, including the U.S. ride-hailing service provider Uber Technologies Inc.

Fridman pocketed about $12.5 billion after selling his stake in Anglo-Russian oil producer TNK-BP three years ago to Kremlin-controlled Rosneft (rosn.mm). He has said he wants to turn LetterOne into a major international player.

Neither Fridman nor LetterOne were ever subject to international sanctions over the Ukrainian crisis and the billionaire is not seen as particularly close to the Kremlin.

9:04 PM - Jul 26, 2017

Sure is. He’s a sick and strange man. People are learning they should lock their doors, the President is out there.

Just think of all his fantasy statements we’ve heard about. Like “I’d date her is she were not my daughter”

Or the classic “You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.

The bit he pulled in the damn oval office with the Irish reporter, making her come to him at his desk and saying she had a “‘nice smile on her face”.

Let alone: “…blood coming out of her eyes. She had blood coming out of her…wherever!”

Dude is a creep. Always has been. And, a bunch of Americans voted for him.

When the Zimbabwe dollar was launched, it was originally on par with the Rhodesian dollar. The Rhodesian dollar was at par with the US dollar.

Yup. The Trump base by-and-large hasn’t abandoned him, the third-party voters are still claiming moral superiority, and the giant group that stays out of elections claiming “both sides are the same” or “government doesn’t affect me” are still sitting on the sidelines.

Until there is movement amongst one or more of those groups, things can (but won’t necessarily) get worse.

The Republicans got a ruling from the Supreme Court during the Obama Administration effectively ending recess appointments (as long as someone gavels in the Senate for a couple minutes it is considered in session). The Democrats can now use that against the GOP.

Theoretically the President can fire any cabinet member for any reason, but firing the Attorney General while Trump is swirling round an investigation is particularly thorny. Nixon did it to get Robert Bork to fire Archibald Cox.

The question is if there are enough Republicans who still care about the institutions of the House, Senate, and Judiciary to care. That is an open question at this point.

Trump and Republicans Treat Their Voters Like Morons

The whole thing is worth reading.

It starts:

As Republicans struggle to figure out which spectacularly unpopular, viciously cruel and perfunctorily considered version of their health-care bill they want to become law, one former member of the House leadership has come out with an extraordinary admission about what a scam the whole project is. In an interview with Elaina Plott of Washingtonian magazine, former House majority leader Eric Cantor, who was defeated in a primary in 2014 by a tea party extremist, explains that Republicans knew they were lying to their base about their ability to repeal the Affordable Care Act, but they just couldn’t help themselves:

“To give the impression that if Republicans were in control of the House and Senate, that we could do that when Obama was still in office … .” His voice trails off and he shakes his head. “I never believed it.”

He says he wasn’t the only one aware of the charade: “We sort of all got what was going on, that there was this disconnect in terms of communication, because no one wanted to take the time out in the general public to even think about ‘Wait a minute—that can’t happen.’ ” But, he adds, “if you’ve got that anger working for you, you’re gonna let it be.”

“This is the most astonishing moment I’ve ever experienced in the Judiciary Committee,” said Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.). “To take a question about the firing of James B. Comey and turn it into a question about Hillary Clinton? The chairman has left the room. Justice has left this room. Common sense has left this room. A lot of stuff has left this room, and maybe never entered it.”

I used to have a favorite store on Highway 61 south of Redwing MN. It was a knick-knack store called Wooden It Be Nice.

My favorite is a biker bar down here called Suck Bang and Blow.

There used to be a biker bar in my hometown called The Lazy “S.” It got too rowdy after a few years and was effectively shut down by the town and local law enforcement. It’s a vacant building to this day.

Husband and I have decided to keep the son in BSA, but he is writing a letter of protest and we are withdrawing our national funding.

Let me know if he gets anything more than the lame-ass boilerplate reply I got today.
