Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Kodos  Jul 26, 2017 • 7:37:21pm

At the rate we are going this week, I would not be surprised at all to have Donald Trump procalim that his public rallies and all military functions must re-institute the Bellamy Salute to display absolute loyalty to him.

“A week only half over”—today Boston public radio was lamenting that they can’t stop following Trump and are now consistently under-reporting local news, but have pledged to reverse the trend.

Ugh, just don’t see much hope for the future. The Republicans are going to get just about everything they want, everyone’s getting fatigued, the press has hit the “It’s fun to see what Trump will get away with next, it’s not like he’ll hurt us, tee hee” point, and I probably won’t have insurance next year.

Yeah, yeah, I’m too negative so I suck and should go die. But I haven’t seen a single point I can cite for future optimism.

Well now.

Two Notorious ‘Alt-Right’ Figures May Play Key Roles in Russia Investigation

The alt-right’s presence seemingly pervades every corner of the Donald Trump administration, so perhaps it’s no surprise that key players in the extremist white nationalist movement are turning out to be involved in the president’s scandals as well — namely, the ongoing investigation into potential collusion between Russian intelligence and members of the Trump campaign.

Two major alt-right figures — Charles C. Johnson, the white nationalist “Trump’s Troll” who reportedly acted as an adviser to the administration’s transition team, and notorious neo-Nazi hacker Andrew “weev” Auernheimer — have been implicated in the Russia investigation, according to a recent piece by Ben Schreckinger in Politico.

Seeing the Rage Furby facing a stint at “Club Fed” would just warm my heart to no end.

I think they sincerely want to pass something they can call repeal. I think the rational thing to do would be to make bipartisan fixes to the ACA, and claim victory because it was a GOP idea to being with and it took Republicans to get it right. But who knows what is actually going on in the Yertules head.

Renaissance_Man  Jul 26, 2017 • 9:21:37pm

The stupid thing is, Obamacare isn’t even that good. This is, after all, the Heritage Foundation’s plan, and a plan that deserved the mockery it got when it was first floated. Only a deranged lobbyist could conceive of a plan to make everyone buy private health insurance and believe that this would somehow reduce the cost of healthcare. It’s madness. And yet here we are, defending it bitterly, because this particular madness stands between Republicans and the poor and elderly, whom the Republicans would much prefer to go away and die quietly once their money has been taken away and after they dutifully vote Republican.

Yes, I’m aware that realpolitik means that working with this flawed plan is better than nothing, and that the realities of America’s pathology mean that actual improvement and reform is a generational task. And I still support Obamacare on the grounds that saving lives is important and that it is good to get Americans used to the idea that healthcare should be a right and a privilege of living in a Western society, rather than a luxury that their owners dole out to the worthy. But it still feels stupid to be defending a plan that Republicans proposed in their delusion and would happily have supported had a black man not signed it. Yet I suppose that’s literally one of the least stupid things in American politics nowadays.

69
Anymouse 🌹  Jul 26, 2017 • 9:26:44pm

WASHINGTON/BUJUMBURA —

Instructors of the six Burundian teens who disappeared last week in Washington say the kids’ parents do not seem concerned about their disappearance, and likely knew the teens would not come back to Burundi.

The parents have not made any public statements about the students, who apparently ran away on July 18 while in the U.S. capital for an international robotics competition. Two of the students were reported Friday to have entered Canada, while the whereabouts of the other four are unclear.

The principal of Iteletique High School, which two of the missing students attended, says the teens gave their parents some advance warning about their plans.

“Talking with parents, they told us that once the kids arrived there, they [the kids] told them they may not come back,” Esperence Niyonzima told a reporter for VOA’s Central Africa Service in Bujumbura.

“It seems the parents are not worried, they were not worried for the kids’ unknown whereabouts,” she said.

Kansas Gov. Brownback nominated as ambassador at large for religious freedom

President Donald Trump has formally nominated Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback to serve as the State Department’s ambassador at large for international religious freedom.

Brownback has served as Kansas governor since 2011. His name has been in the mix for the post for weeks, before the White House announced his pick.

If confirmed, Brownback will serve effectively as the head of the Office of International Religous Freedom within the State Department. That office is charged with promoting religous freedom as a key objective of U.S. foreign policy, according to the State Department’s website. The office’s mission is to monitor “religious persecution and discrimination worldwide, recommend and implement policies in respective regions or countries, and develop programs to promote religious freedom.”

Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines  Jul 26, 2017 • 10:30:34pm

Who was the most evil Nazi? That choice might be the most competitive in history, but this monster is certainly in the running:

Oskar Dirlewanger Oskar Dirlewanger (26 September 1895 - 7 June 1945)[1] was a German military officer who served as the founder and commander of the infamous Nazi SS penal unit “Dirlewanger” during World War II. His name is closely linked to some of the worst crimes of the war. He also fought in World War I, the post-World War I conflicts, and the Spanish Civil War. He died after World War II while in Allied custody, apparently beaten to death by his guards.

Dirlewanger is invariably described as an extremely cruel person by historians and researchers, including as “a psychopathic killer and child molester” by Steven Zaloga, “violently sadistic” by Richard Rhodes, “an expert in extermination and a devotee of sadism and necrophilia” by J. Bowyer Bell, and “a sadist and necrophiliac” by Bryan Mark Rigg. World War II historian Chris Bishop called him the “most evil man in the SS”. According to Timothy Snyder, “in all the theaters of the Second World War, few could compete in cruelty” with Dirlewanger.

Dirlewanger mostly led death squads in the field but he was briefly commandant of the labor camp at Stary Dzików. This led to an investigation for abuse, brutality, and other offenses and his removal back to the front. Yes, he was court martialed for abuse and brutality. By the Waffen SS. Let that sink in. He was later involved in the suppression of the Warsaw uprising, where he oversaw an orgy of rape and sadistic murder on an unheard of scale.

At the end of war he was captured by the French, who thoughtfully left him in the custody of Polish guards. He was soon dead. His cellmate, a Luftwaffe officer, said the guards beat him to death. Some think the Luftwaffe guy did it. The French called it “natural causes.” There were many rumors that he had escaped, so many that the Federal German government dug up his carcass in 1960 and had him positively identified by forensic dentists.

(I posted this because, despite a lifelong interest in World War II, I had never heard of this devil until today.)

In an earlier thread yesterday, I called the US a “sewer” in the context of boycotting travel to that destination, and I wish to explain that comment, prefacing it with the statement that I, too, am an American citizen, who’s lived and worked in the US for 26 years.

My analysis is that, right now, about 1/3rd of the US population is basically Nazis or Nazi-collaborators, about 1/3rd doesn’t give a f*ck about what’s happening, and about 1/3rd are good people. This is a rough approximation, but, I feel, not an incorrect one.

While recognizing the existence of that last 1/3rd, praising and supporting their effort, I still believe that it is not wrong to characterize the US as Trump’s America, in the same breath as I once did with Franco’s Spain or Pinochet’s Chile, or historically others have done when referring to Hitler’s Germany or Vichy France.

There was a fair amount of debate in France when, during the campaign and more recently, President Macron blamed and apologized on behalf of France, first for the crimes committed during the Algerian War, and recently for the infamous Jewish deportation of the Vel d’Hiv.

The Nazi Front National, in particular, took umbrage, objecting that this were not the actions of the “real” France, which during WWII was embodied by De Gaulle’s “Free France” in England. No such argument can be made about the Algerian War, so their argument there relied mostly on all the “good Frenchmen” who only did their patriotic duty, etc.

(Like “hero” McCain who participated in Operation Rolling Thunder in Viet-Nam which killed nearly 100,000 civilians. My dad was in the French Military during the Algerian War and AFAIK, being part of the Medical Corps, he never committed any war crimes, but that wasn’t a period of his service he was particularly proud of, and I never, even once, heard him or anyone else refer to him as a hero. But i digress…)

All the FN’s arguments are true, and there were indeed a lot of good French men and women who not only objected to, but fought against these dark moments of French history, and some paid it with their lives — but even then, I must agree with Macron that the collective responsibility of the nation as a single, legally constituted entity remains, and it was indeed “France” (in an almost Gaullist sense) who was/is responsible.

So we’re back to short-hands such as Vichy France, Franco’s Spain, etc., — and de facto, Trump’s America, which, despite the Resistance and a great number of very good Americans (among which I count myself, and others here), is a sewer.

I will not set foot on US soil until that monster has been removed from power and our country cleaned up and returned to the values it holds dear.

Doubtful - Erodgan was long been relatively lukewarm to EU membership. That was more of a project of former Foreign Minister Davatoglu and former President Abudllah Gul; those two were the biggest proponents of Turkey’s EU membership. Erdogan was always more “Meh” about it. As things stand right now, I’d say Erdogan’s most likely against it as EU membership would serve as an impediment to his delusions of grandeur.

1. North Korea is still technically a Democratic People’s Republic…

2. There is a stick-and-carrot relationship going on here, but do not look on Europe’s rejection of Turkey as something that drove them to become more authoritarian. Erdogan seems more interested in consolidating power in Turkey than in moving toward membership in the EU.

…and really, regardless of the religious differences, and despite the fact that Turkey was long a secular state, there are enormous social differences between Turkey and the EU: the people and culture in Istanbul and Ankara are fairly modern by European standards, but the rural areas are still very backward.

re: #141 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The whole Turkish EU issue as you noted predates Erdogan and is fairly complicated. I’m just going to point out that as it regards Turks and integration in Europe, there are other examples where the whole “different cultures” argument seems to be exposed as a lie.

I’m going to pick on Germany, because they have their own Turkish integration problem that starts off immediately following WWII with their guest workers programs. Fast forward to the 90s and you have multiple generations of the descendants of these workers who were born in Germany, spoke German, went to German schools, listened to American music and were to a large extend German culturally, but weren’t actually allowed to become German citizens. At the same time you had the German government providing a right of return and citizenship to Germans born in eastern Europe under communism, people who in many cases did not speak German, were not born in Germany, had no experience with democratic government and market economies and were culturally very much eastern European. The different in how these Germans and the Turks were treated was not the result of “cultural” differences, it was flat up prejudice.

Or we could move on to France and their endless battle to keep Muslim women from wearing traditional clothing and covering up at the beach among other things.

Now, me when I see that the two most powerful EU members have these huge longstanding problems with Turks and Muslims based largely on prejudice, I’m not inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt that they’re operating fully above the board when they use “cultural differences” for decades as a reason not to move at least hesitatingly toward EU membership for Turkey while at the same time they begin admitting nations like Poland and Hungary that until recently were Soviet satellite states with communist economies and authoritarian governments and who actually have less experience with representative democracy and respect for constitutional and institutional norms than Turkey did at the time.

There’s no mechanism for kicking a member state out of the EU. With a 2/3 vote in Parliament they can use Article 7 to suspend voting privileges for a member state, but that’s a particularly high bar especially given that the members from Poland and Hungary can almost certainly be counted to vote no if either of them is targeted.

I’m not seeing any good results from the EUs threats. I’m seeing some good results from a bunch of pissed off Polish citizens taking to the streets.

My opinion is that you’re blinded to the prejudices that exist within the EU and France in particular in much the same way a person living in a lily white city in the Midwest is blinded to the racism and prejudice in the US.

Germany has since changed its laws so that anyone born in Germany to legal resident parents is automatically German.

They have not always been models of acceptance and tolerance, but I have found that they are moving in the right direction.

Nor will they extend their definition of “tolerance” to any culture that treats women as second-class citizens.

Yes, and it was definitely a good step forward and I agree that Germany is moving in the right direction, but the underlying prejudice is still there. I’d like to think that if it were put up to a vote, birthright citizenship in the US would still pass, but I’m beginning to doubt it.

I agree regarding the tolerance of cultures that treat women as second-class citizens. I wasn’t aware that Turkey treated women as such. When I checked, they even had more liberal abortion laws than some EU countries like Poland and Ireland, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there weren’t other issues.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. The GOP noise machine is set to ruptured eardrum (condition not covered under Trumpcare), and Ryan is on the march with his nonsense about how he’s doing the people’s business all while the only people he seems to care about are millionaires like Trump.

McConnell in the Senate continues pushing for a version of Trumpcare that will strip health coverage from tens of millions of Americans. The latest iteration of this is the “skinny” plan, which is just as destructive as all the rest, except the GOP thinks that delaying the effects in some way somehow obscures the fact that it ultimately separates the same number of people from their coverage.

The GOP isn’t above busting the rules, ignoring tradition, and screwing millions of Americans to push for tax cuts for millionaires like Trump. Why? They can’t stand the legacy of a black guy providing health coverage to millions of Americans that weren’t able to get coverage before.

And while that shit show is ongoing, Trump’s busy screwing over the LGBT community that never had any reason to trust Trump in the first place. Trump’s position on transgendered people in service is pandering to the Bible Thumpers while screwing over patriotic LGBT who are serving in our nation’s armed forces.

Sessions is getting out of Washington - for a few days.

This is really odd, considering I just heard the news that Trump is coming to Brentwood, LI (just a few miles from here) tomorrow to gloat about putting the hurt on MS-13.

When the original announcement was made a few months ago, Sessions made the appearance by himself. Looks like Trump is going to show up to take credit.

Oh. Maybe not that odd, after all.

A 44% tax?

That’s pretty much what Clinton was proposing and the GOP were slamming her for a tax hike.

Mind you that the marginal rate isn’t the same as the effective rate, so the GOP would likely screw around so that even though there’s a higher rate, they’d end up paying far less than someone in a lower tax bracket because their income is treated different (like say cutting capital gains tax rate significantly, which is where many millionaires see much of their income generated).

It’s rather sad that Ryan and McConnell have both found themselves reduced to providing cover to the “moderates” in their caucuses in the same fashion: “Just lie back and think of tax cuts.” Not crafting popular bills, not spurning their wingnut backbenchers, but just promising that they’ll still respect them in the morning if they’ll whore themselves out this one time.

If the US electoral system was like France’s, then we would have seen Trump, like Marie Le Pen, winning a place in the runoff election but then coming in second in the final vote…

Not necessarily. if the system was like France, there would have been four leading candidates in the first round: Trump, Hillary, for sure, Bernie almost certainly, and — Ted Cruz? Kasich? That’s harder to speculate. Only the top two would have been at the second round, and I’m not 100% convinced that this four-way split would have ineluctable led to a Trump/Hillary match.

German birthright citizenship is not automatic: it only applies to children of legal resident immigrants who have been there for more than three years, but can be obtained retroactively after parents have met the minimum stay requirement.

That was the case with my daughter, form 1998, her younger siblings (born after 2000) were German at birth.

And my opinion is that you don’t know very much about the situation here and are regurgitating what you’ve read in a well-meaning but hopelessly mired in generalities American newspaper.

In any event, as always, your original argument was of the strawman-type, based on future hypothetical what-ifs (in effect, “what if the EU became as bad as the US”) while mine was based on some very harsh realities that are impacting the entire planet right now.

Besides, I’m hardly the only who’s made the decision to boycott travel to the US.

Actually, my original point was that the US is a fairly big and diverse place that ended up with the Shitgibbon because of an archaic voting system and voter suppression efforts in some of the states. Not visiting New York City or LA because the “country” is a cesspool only makes slightly more sense than not visiting Paris because Poland, especially considering that size and nature of the cesspools in the US and Europe aren’t really all that different, France just managed to avoid digging up their sewers in the last election in due to the nature of their system and let’s be honest because they recoiled from voting for their version of the Shitgibbon when they saw ours.

Now I sort of understand the reasoning behind not traveling to the US if you expect to be hassled by ICE, but realistically not travelling to liberal areas is a horrible way to fight the damage Trump is doing. States like California, Massachusetts and New York, along with major urban areas in even in deep red states are the key players resisting Trump. They’re also trying to do things like independently abiding by the terms of the Paris agreement. Trump’s already implementing policies that hurt the economies of these areas. His anti-immigrant, antiscience, anti-health direct impacts key parts of the economies in this areas. Tourism in many of these areas is also suffering. Europeans reinforcing Trump’s efforts don’t hurt Trump or his voters. They hurt the people opposing him, they make it more difficult to resist. If you actually want to impact Trump and his MAGAts, you’re going to need to be a little more selective.

So now Cheeto Pendejo is threatening the state of Alaska.

Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly threatened to isolate Alaska after a senator from the state voted against the President’s health care motion.

Senator Lisa Murkowski was one of seven Republicans who rejected the measure to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act, one of Mr Trump’s key policy pledges, during a vote on Tuesday.

Later in the day Ms Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, the other Republican senator for Alaska, allegedly received calls from the Department of the Interior warning them that the state’s future was now under consideration.

The messages, which came directly from the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, were “troubling”, Mr Sullivan told Alaska Dispatch News.

Alaskan regulatory issues which require support from the federal government, including permission to expand oil drilling in the National Petroleum Reserve, may now not be approved, it is feared.

I think you are missing one of the important and major changes with the ACA.

Well, Trump can say anything (and usually does), but if it’s up to the Senate, Mitch McConnell’s opinion is likely to be of more importance.

I really have no idea what the Senate rules are vis-a-vis formal “recess” vs. “pro-forma session” (whether it’s a simple majority vote or whatever), but it’s a fairly safe bet that if there is any way for McConnell to manipulate them to 1) screw Democrats and 2) benefit Republicans, he’ll be on it like stink on sh*t….

re: #219 Targetpractice

Remember when the media was fawning over this guy just a few days ago:

[Embedded content]

Josh Marshall has a good post up that addresses Trump’s ability to make people destroy themselves.

We’ve discussed at some length how President Trump destroys everything he touches. Trump’s own damaged, malignant personality is no great mystery. The world has no shortage of malicious predators or others who are so damaged that they sow chaos and hurt wherever they go. It’s our national misfortune that Trump has attained such power. But the existence of such a person is no mystery. There’s no shortage of them. What is difficult to understand, what requires some explanation is the way Trump is able to destroy those around him. Not once or twice but again and again, repeatedly, in a pattern so consistent that it becomes more inexplicable over time as new victims appear insensible to the unmistakeable pattern they have seen unfold along with us.

[…]

I puzzled over this for some time. Eventually I sensed that Trump wasn’t inducing people’s self-destruction so much as he was acting like a divining rod, revealing rot that existed already but was not apparent. It may seem like an odd comparison. But I’m reminded of the effect in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series where the cursed pirates appear to be flesh and blood bodies. But the moonlight reveals them as desiccated skeletons, animated but undead. The rot was there but hidden. Trump is the moonlight. Perhaps better to say, to invert our metaphor, Trump is the darkness.

But it still feels stupid to be defending a plan that Republicans proposed in their delusion and would happily have supported had a black man not signed it. Yet I suppose that’s literally one of the least stupid things in American politics nowadays.

Obamacare is more than just the individual marketplace. It addresses lack of transparency on health care costs (transparency being a means to help consumers make better and cheaper costs for comparable treatments, etc.) There’s little reason that if two doctors have similar records on procedures that one would cost $1000 in one place but $2000 at the hospital the next town over. Or that MRI or CT scans cost $500 in one hospital or $2,000 at the next. Etc.

Transparency on costs is one aspect. Another is the Medicaid expansion, which was what seriously drove down the uninsured rates where states bought into it. The states that refused are the ones with the highest uninsured rates.

Add to that the dependent care coverage to age 26 and the preexisting condition/lifetime caps changes, and it goes beyond the individual mandate to purchase insurance through a marketplace.

It’s also modeled on the MassCare plan, and that helped drive uninsured rate to historic lows in the state.

The entire point of the individual mandate was to give the GOP an attempt to buy-in and support Obamacare, but they decided to oppose everything they previously stood for.

Single payer is perhaps a better outcome than what we have now, but transitioning from multiple private insurers wont be easy. Medicaid/Medicare for all might be the preferred outcome - and both of those programs are responsible for constricting costs since the purchasing power of both programs helps stem the hikes in costs seen year over year for decades. GOP opposition to Obamacare on the basis of an annual premium hike is also misleading since there’s transparency on Obamacare plans not seen elsewhere in the private (employer based) marketplace. Likewise, opposition to Obamacare because there’s a single insurer in some areas is bullshit - employers give their employees one option too and it’s not like we have a choice about that. Insurers have decided it is more cost effective not to compete in some areas because they don’t have a network set up there.

Speaking of networks, the ACA allows insurers to sell equivalent policies across state lines, but they’ve refused to set up plans on that provision because it is cost prohibitive to set up a network somewhere they don’t operate. All the policies in those other states would be out-of-network, and therefore not cost-competitive to the people in those other states who’d buy a plan compared with in-state in-network plans.

When the GOP did that, they were the majority. It’s the majority leader who decides when they’re “officially” in session, even if it’s just a fake in-session that somebody opens/declares no quorum/closes every day.

The last part of Dubya’s term, when Dems were majority, it was Jim Webb who did the official open-close every day during nobody-here sessions (“cause I’m the new guy, and ‘cause I live in Virginia.”)

Actually, given Donald Trump’s typical “business model”, it’s probably fairly easy to “crash a casino”: since he probably had little interest (or incentive) in running the casinos as casinos, per se. IIRC, he simply promoted them using his name (and borrowed money), then leveraged the hell out of them, and sold them off to other suckers investors at inflated values: values likely SO inflated that the huge cash flow from the casino operations was, in effect, irrelevant.

IOW, smoke-and-mirrors bullshit painted and gilded and slapped with a big gaudy “TRUMP” sign - like I said, his typical business model….

I honestly can’t say what it’s like to actually run a casino as I’ve never done it, but the general consensus, at least here, is owning a casino is like having an ATM machine that spits out free money 24/7.

Trump made a classic blunder in opening a business: he opened two casinos in a small city that was barely able to support four existing casinos. Atlantic City is not like Vegas. It’s a small town, which did not have especially good transportation. To sell his investors on his casino projects, Trump said he would use Trump Air to fly people in from NYC and elsewhere. He didn’t. Only high-rollers and celebrities came in by helicopter. Everyone else came in by coach, like plebes.

To build his casinos, Trump borrowed a lot of money. They were over-leveraged, and the market in AC was already saturated. Plus, there were two Trump casinos competing against each other, and against four other “name-brand” casinos, which had been there for a few years already.

So, you had a recipe for disaster. Much of the proceeds had to service debt. Traffic was low, because of competition, poor accessibility and a weak economy. As I understand, the Trump casinos were not all that special — so there was no particular reason to gamble there, as opposed to the others.

That’s how you lose money running a casino. By being stupid.

Good points - IIRC, shortly after Trump opened his casinos in Atlantic City, there was a major economic downturn. That certainly compounded his error (though in fairness, that’s a situation beyond his control).

So when do we get to find out about this guy’s connections to the Trump family? Soon, probably.

This case has the Bitcoin world in a tizzy, because Vinnik allegedly obtained or laundered funds stolen from the Mt Gox Bitcoin exchange in Japan. The heist led to Mt Gox shutting its doors, and its CEO, Mark Karpeles, is on trial in Japan for mismanagement of the company.

BTC-e, the exchange associated with Vinnik, was a shady outfit. Its location, leadership, and storage procedures were all shrouded in mystery, but remarkably it chugged along, allowing users to trade Bitcoin and other digital currencies, rubles, euros, pounds and dollars, all with minimal KYC and AML requirements.

A match made in heaven, so to speak.

It’s a carousel of cronies for Trump who can’t keep anyone in key positions for more than a few months - and he’s only been in office for a few months.

Trump’s busy throwing decisions to the wind and no one knows what’s going on. Everyone’s leaking in the WH, including Trump, Mooch, and everyone around them because that’s how they roll - they think this is a reality show and that in order to stay in good graces with Trump that they have to throw everyone else around them under the bus and paint others as being disloyal to Trump.

This is the personification of dysfunctional. Under the definition of dysfunctional in the dictionary, there’s a picture of the Trump WH.

re: #260 lawhawk

Thanks lawhawk. I was going to get into Renaissance_Man’s post more, but didn’t have the time to take on his rather cavalier view of the whole of the ACA. I just wanted to point out one huge change he missed mentioning.

Only someone with little understanding of market economics would opened two casinos in a saturated market in a sluggish economy. So, we can either conclude Trump is an idiot, or that he planned for the projects to fail, expecting to skate away from crushing debt by declaring bankruptcy.

He was only at the ExIm Bank for a month (started June 19, 2017).

And a quick search turns up the info that the Ex-Im Bank (which has been a GOP bete noir for years for some reason) was slated to get the hook: until earlier this year, when Pres Trump apparently changed his mind about it - and, not coincidentally, I’m sure, decided to name a friend/crony/stooge (Tony Mooch) to run it.

I saw a YouTube video the other day which explained how the house wins at roulette. The wheel has an equal number of red and black numbers, and odd and even numbers, so theoretically the house would have no statistical advantage over the bettors (for a fair game). But the wheel has two additional green “cups”, marked with zeroes, which are considered neither even nor odd. Those two extra places for the ball to land tip the odds in the house’s favor, so over the long run, the house makes thousands each day on a roulette table.

Best odds for gamblers is generally blackjack if you stick to a strategy, of course the rumor is that some penny slot machines odds can actually favor the gamblers.

Even with even odds though, the house is generally going to win against an individual as they can better weather a losing streak than individual players.

I don’t think Trump has an inkling of how DC politics actually works. He thought he could bully his way to a win and be given the keys to the castle.

Weird thing is that RNC PR BS didn’t leak anything. As far as I know, those financials are public records.

Of course they are: but does anyone think that Kellyanne’s pratings are meant to have any sort of factual grounding? The real “audience” here, I think, are Trump’s media lackeys and their viewer base (i.e. Fox Nation droolers) who are only going to hear “Reince Priebus” and “leaks”. The talking-heads will probably tut-tut and tsk-tsk over it (in between jabbering about Hillary Clinton’s emails), and/or sputter in outrage. Outcome: Priebus looks bad for seemingly shivving Dear Leader’s esteemed and trusted attorney (Mooch) - next stop: under the bus…..

Viagra makes erections possible when constricted blood flow interferes with the normal operation of arousal brain chemicals; fight-or-flight feelings produce a different set of brain chemicals, arousal isn’t an issue (until *after* the battle. Surviving when you felt you might not is a huge turn-on).

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks!

today’s thought experiment, re “the wall”

here’s the core
campaign: “we’re going to build a wall and get mexico to pay for it”
today: house bill includes funds to build the wall

forget everything else - videos, quotes, tweets, parsing the word “pay” (tariffs, future payback), some secret devious plot that’ll come out later, even that mexico publicly said time and again they werent going to pay for any wall — these are just reasons, excuses so forget it all

one simple question for the world’s greatest negotiator:

did we miss when you sat down and discussed this with mexico? some summit? proposals? talks?
days of meetings to hammer out the best deal ever?

nope.
you never even tried

you chickened out cause you knew you’d lose

quite right, although any bill expanded in conference would still have to pass the same Senate gauntlet that has dumped the BCRA and the straight repeal on their asses. Assuming there isn’t also some trickery in the conference that evades the reconciliation limits. But if that were possible, why not have the Senate vote on such a measure now?

The conference remains tricky in the sense that it’s a more secretive process than even this dark and silent Senate one.

Speaking of horrors. A ride at the Ohio State Fair here in Columbus broke last night and flung some riders off of it. One young person was killed and several others are hurt some critically.

I don’t go to the fair anymore, but I never trust rides that are not permanent.

Here is some video and a story from the local NBC news.

NBC4i - One dead, seven injured after Fire Ball ride malfunctions at Ohio State Fair

Iframe

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The Columbus Division of Fire says one person is dead and five critically injured after a ride malfunctioned at the Ohio State Fair.

Tyler Jarrell, 18, of Columbus, Ohio, was pronounced deceased at the fairgrounds. Seven others were injured and transported to area hospitals

At least four of the victims remained hospitalized as of late Thursday morning. Medical officials say three of the victims will require more surgery as well as rehab due to the injuries.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin says one of the rows of seats on the Fire Ball ride “snapped off.”

Ohio Governor John Kasich said the Fair will be open Thursday; all rides will be closed until they are inspected again. Kasich said Fire Ball had been inspected several times, including by a third-party company. Ohio Department of Agriculture chief ride inspector Michael Vartorella said the inspection process is lengthy, as the ride has several pieces to it.

Kasich also said that 11 rides did not open at all on Wednesday. At least four were still closed after inspections.”The fair is about the best things in life, and tonight with this accident it becomes a terrible, terrible tragedy,” he said.

Amusements of America is the company providing rides at the State Fair this year. More information about the Fire Ball can be found on their website. It is described as an “aggressive thrill ride.”

Ohio Gov. John Kasich released a statement Wednesday evening:

“I am terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio’s fair. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those grieving and injured. I have ordered a full investigation into this incident and have ordered that all fair rides be shut down until additional safety inspections can be completed.”

Rides are inspected each year in the week leading up to the fair. Rides are also subject to spot inspections through the time the fair is open.

Wednesday was the opening day for the Fair, which runs until Aug. 6.

The Ohio State Fair released the following statement on their Facebook page:

This just popped up on my FB feed from a friend. Can any AZ Lizards make a recommendation?

URGENTLY NEEDED!
Sad but true…
Does anyone know a good criminal defense attorney in Tucson AZ?
Several evenings ago, a dear twenty-something friend of my daughter’s was sitting in her Tucson living room watching a movie with her boyfriend. There was a knock on the door. My daughter’s friend got up and answered the door.
Four policemen burst into the room and arrested both the woman and her boyfriend for “domestic violence”.
I suspect they hit the wrong address.
Both have since been charged with assault and/or domestic violence.
This is insane and they need legal assistance immediately.
I thought I’d ask my FB pals if they had any leads on a solid lawyer in that otherwise very nice town in Arizona.
You can PM me a name/number if you have one.
My daughter is furious and freaked out.
I’m just trying to help.

Thanks!

re: #477 Stanley Sea

While we live in a challenging time in a country divided along political lines, the focus of Scouting remains the same today as every day. (JUST WHAT IS THAT FOCUS?)

Trustworthiness, loyalty, kindness and bravery are just a few of the admirable traits Scouts aspire to develop - in fact, they make up the Scout Oath and Scout Law. (AS IS CHEERING AT HORRIBLE THINGS SAID BY A LUNATIC)

As part of our program’s duty to country, we teach youth to become active citizens (CHEERING POLITICAL OPPONENTS MANY DON’T KNOW), to participate in their government, respect the variety of perspectives and to stand up for individual rights. (IF THAT WAS THE KIND OF PARTICIPATION THEY SUPPORT, NO THANKS)

Few will argue the importance of teaching values and responsibility to our youth — not only right from wrong, but specific positive values such as fairness, courage, honor and respect for others. (YOUR VALUES WERE ON DISPLAY)

For all of the adventure we provide youth such as hiking, camping and zip-lining, those activities actually serve as proven pathways and opportunities to develop leadership skills and become people of character. (IF WHAT WAS SHOWN IS CHARACTER, YOU’RE DOING CHARACTER WRONG)

In a time when differences seem to separate our country, we hope the true spirit of Scouting will empower our next generation of leaders to bring people together to do good in the world. (THANKS BUT NO THANKS TO THAT LEADERSHIP)

Took them three days to come up with this?

Hmmm…. someone’s been paying attention :)

Tax brackets are a straight math issue (both for the taxpayer and for the IRS to compute and for Congress to identify specific revenue as adding, neutral, or add to debt).

But that’s not simplification. Simplification means addressing items of income, deductions, exclusions, credits, and includes depreciation and NOLs.

It means addressing capital gains and treatment of income by and from nonprofits. It means addressing the mortgage interest deduction and state and local taxes.

Looks like the Russia thing has the potential to create something of a schism in the GOP.

Bucking Idaho’s two GOP senators, the Kootenai County Republican Party has approved a resolution praising Russia for resisting a “progressive globalist agenda.”

The county Republican Central Committee narrowly passed the resolution on Tuesday favoring friendlier relations with Russia and condemning the Russian sanctions bill that was sponsored by Idaho GOP Sen. Mike Crapo and passed overwhelmingly by both the U.S. House and Senate.

The resolution praises Russia and denounces Crapo and Idaho GOP Sen. Jim Risch for supporting the measure. It also calls for them to “re-examine their foreign policy orientations” and adopt “an anti-globalist, America-first foreign policy orientation.”

Lindsay Nothern, communications director for Crapo, said Wednesday his office didn’t know about the Kootenai County GOP resolution.

Deductions? Are you worth more than $2mm? Everything is deductible. If not, 1040EZ for you.

i understand what you’re after. i guess i wasnt clear

on the campaign trail, simplification is always talked about in terms of the number of pages of tax code. in the legislature that’s ignored and “simplifying” the brackets comes into play (which is really the tax cut - or hike)

its those thousands of pages that define what’s income if you dont earn a salary, own an unincorporated business, what expenses can be deducted from gross sales, what income is exempt (child support) or not (alimony) and on and on. defining taxable income - essentially the tax base, is extremely tricky

as for 1040 deductions (and i assume that includes credits and above the line stuff), eliminating all of them for anyone under 2m income (or did you actually mean “worth” and how would you ever measure that?) would be a terrible unleveling of the national playing field

then you’d have to greatly expand the 1040ez which would be counterproductive to it’s purpose because currently it only recognizes wages, interest and unemployment as income. nothing else, and there’s lots of other types of income that is and should be taxed.

while some public policy can and does creep into taxation, taxing can be fair and equitable. or simple. it generally can’t be both fair and simple at the same time

its the complexity that makes it more fair (imo)

And I have an inkling some of those pissed off commenters were Trump’s voters that took a chance on the outsider. They may be feeling a little foolish and are going to lash out to make themselves feel better about fucking up so bad.

Taking a beating in the comments. Deservedly so.

Too bad I can’t read the comments. Oh well. Not sure if they’re down or my work computer won’t allow it.

That’s one of those “if looks could kill” sort of moments.

Great photo - I’ve always found the one of Sophia Loren giving Jayne Mansfield the side-eye to be one of my faves as well.

This one, from the same photoset, is even funnier, IMO. Might be sorta NSFW, so in a private tag.

I guess all that OxyContin obviously damaged Limbaugh’s brain. Either that, or he’s so desperate that he’s managed to convince himself of utter bullshit.

Trump: So how do we hoodwink the public about this?

Sessions: I got it. You go to Twitter and start insulting me. The media will love it, and I don’t mind.

Trump: And I love insulting people. But what if we fool the dopes on our own side?

Sessions: We can let some of them in on it. Don’t worry this scheme of ours won’t leak.

Trump: Great idea. So bigly.

Hmmmm, not really a directive. DJT probably thinks it was. He might not get the whole chain of command thing. You give an order to Mattis, and he orders the military, probably some paperwork involved, some papertrail with the reasons, etc.

Until the costs can be charged to an appropriation, it doesn’t exist. Ain’t no orders gettin’ cut.

It’s obvious he doesn’t. He still thinks he can send out a memo and the underlings will just snap to it and get it done. And it’s clear that there was no thought put into implementation, at least none that the JCoS got.

Just like if he said it from a podium on tv

You pick up the phone and clarify. You wait for something in writing to verify

This ain’t the immediacy of war

Hard to tell what Abramson is trying to get at. Half the thread is trying to determine if Trump’s tweets are “directives” or not, half seems to be whether or not Gen. Dunford ought to be cashiered for mutiny.

As long as Mattis hasn’t relayed the order Dunford is golden. At that point Dunford kicks it down. Then the Service staffs get a grip on it, then it’s Halloween, then…
