This whole sorry exercise has been the ultimate testament to dysfunction, complete with McCain trotting into town for one last publicity stunt.
The stupid thing is, Obamacare isn’t even that good. This is, after all, the Heritage Foundation’s plan, and a plan that deserved the mockery it got when it was first floated. Only a deranged lobbyist could conceive of a plan to make everyone buy private health insurance and believe that this would somehow reduce the cost of healthcare. It’s madness. And yet here we are, defending it bitterly, because this particular madness stands between Republicans and the poor and elderly, whom the Republicans would much prefer to go away and die quietly once their money has been taken away and after they dutifully vote Republican.
Yes, I’m aware that realpolitik means that working with this flawed plan is better than nothing, and that the realities of America’s pathology mean that actual improvement and reform is a generational task. And I still support Obamacare on the grounds that saving lives is important and that it is good to get Americans used to the idea that healthcare should be a right and a privilege of living in a Western society, rather than a luxury that their owners dole out to the worthy. But it still feels stupid to be defending a plan that Republicans proposed in their delusion and would happily have supported had a black man not signed it. Yet I suppose that’s literally one of the least stupid things in American politics nowadays.
Conservatives can’t seem to get off the idea of repealing the ACA and failing. They’ve been at this for what, the better part of a decade?
Maybe they’d have better luck defunding ACORN again. That way they can put a bill in front of Trump and declare a win.

President Donald Trump has formally nominated Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback to serve as the State Department’s ambassador at large for international religious freedom.
Brownback has served as Kansas governor since 2011. His name has been in the mix for the post for weeks, before the White House announced his pick.
If confirmed, Brownback will serve effectively as the head of the Office of International Religous Freedom within the State Department. In an earlier thread yesterday, I called the US a “sewer” in the context of boycotting travel to that destination, and I wish to explain that comment, prefacing it with the statement that I, too, am an American citizen, who’s lived and worked in the US for 26 years.
My analysis is that, right now, about 1/3rd of the US population is basically Nazis or Nazi-collaborators, about 1/3rd doesn’t give a f*ck about what’s happening, and about 1/3rd are good people. This is a rough approximation, but, I feel, not an incorrect one.
While recognizing the existence of that last 1/3rd, praising and supporting their effort, I still believe that it is not wrong to characterize the US as Trump’s America, in the same breath as I once did with Franco’s Spain or Pinochet’s Chile, or historically others have done when referring to Hitler’s Germany or Vichy France.
There was a fair amount of debate in France when, during the campaign and more recently, President Macron blamed and apologized on behalf of France, first for the crimes committed during the Algerian War, and recently for the infamous Jewish deportation of the Vel d’Hiv.
The Nazi Front National, in particular, took umbrage, objecting that this were not the actions of the “real” France, which during WWII was embodied by De Gaulle’s “Free France” in England. No such argument can be made about the Algerian War, so their argument there relied mostly on all the “good Frenchmen” who only did their patriotic duty, etc.
(Like “hero” McCain who participated in Operation Rolling Thunder in Viet-Nam which killed nearly 100,000 civilians. My dad was in the French Military during the Algerian War and AFAIK, being part of the Medical Corps, he never committed any war crimes, but that wasn’t a period of his service he was particularly proud of, and I never, even once, heard him or anyone else refer to him as a hero. But i digress…)
All the FN’s arguments are true, and there were indeed a lot of good French men and women who not only objected to, but fought against these dark moments of French history, and some paid it with their lives — but even then, I must agree with Macron that the collective responsibility of the nation as a single, legally constituted entity remains, and it was indeed “France” (in an almost Gaullist sense) who was/is responsible.
So we’re back to short-hands such as Vichy France, Franco’s Spain, etc., — and de facto, Trump’s America, which, despite the Resistance and a great number of very good Americans (among which I count myself, and others here), is a sewer.
I will not set foot on US soil until that monster has been removed from power and our country cleaned up and returned to the values it holds dear.

Doubtful - Erodgan was long been relatively lukewarm to EU membership. That was more of a project of former Foreign Minister Davatoglu and former President Abudllah Gul; those two were the biggest proponents of Turkey’s EU membership. Erdogan was always more “Meh” about it. As things stand right now, I’d say Erdogan’s most likely against it as EU membership would serve as an impediment to his delusions of grandeur.

2. There is a stick-and-carrot relationship going on here, but do not look on Europe’s rejection of Turkey as something that drove them to become more authoritarian. Erdogan seems more interested in consolidating power in Turkey than in moving toward membership in the EU.
…and really, regardless of the religious differences, and despite the fact that Turkey was long a secular state, there are enormous social differences between Turkey and the EU: the people and culture in Istanbul and Ankara are fairly modern by European standards, but the rural areas are still very backward.

The whole Turkish EU issue as you noted predates Erdogan and is fairly complicated. I’m just going to point out that as it regards Turks and integration in Europe, there are other examples where the whole “different cultures” argument seems to be exposed as a lie.
I’m going to pick on Germany, because they have their own Turkish integration problem that starts off immediately following WWII with their guest workers programs. Fast forward to the 90s and you have multiple generations of the descendants of these workers who were born in Germany, spoke German, went to German schools, listened to American music and were to a large extend German culturally, but weren’t actually allowed to become German citizens. At the same time you had the German government providing a right of return and citizenship to Germans born in eastern Europe under communism, people who in many cases did not speak German, were not born in Germany, had no experience with democratic government and market economies and were culturally very much eastern European. The different in how these Germans and the Turks were treated was not the result of “cultural” differences, it was flat up prejudice.
Or we could move on to France and their endless battle to keep Muslim women from wearing traditional clothing and covering up at the beach among other things.
Now, me when I see that the two most powerful EU members have these huge longstanding problems with Turks and Muslims based largely on prejudice, I’m not inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt that they’re operating fully above the board when they use “cultural differences” for decades as a reason not to move at least hesitatingly toward EU membership for Turkey while at the same time they begin admitting nations like Poland and Hungary that until recently were Soviet satellite states with communist economies and authoritarian governments and who actually have less experience with representative democracy and respect for constitutional and institutional norms than Turkey did at the time.

There’s no mechanism for kicking a member state out of the EU. With a 2/3 vote in Parliament they can use Article 7 to suspend voting privileges for a member state, but that’s a particularly high bar especially given that the members from Poland and Hungary can almost certainly be counted to vote no if either of them is targeted.
I’m not seeing any good results from the EUs threats. I’m seeing some good results from a bunch of pissed off Polish citizens taking to the streets.
My opinion is that you’re blinded to the prejudices that exist within the EU and France in particular in much the same way a person living in a lily white city in the Midwest is blinded to the racism and prejudice in the US.

Yes, and it was definitely a good step forward and I agree that Germany is moving in the right direction, but the underlying prejudice is still there. I’d like to think that if it were put up to a vote, birthright citizenship in the US would still pass, but I’m beginning to doubt it.
I agree regarding the tolerance of cultures that treat women as second-class citizens. I wasn’t aware that Turkey treated women as such. When I checked, they even had more liberal abortion laws than some EU countries like Poland and Ireland, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there weren’t other issues.

That’s pretty much what Clinton was proposing and the GOP were slamming her for a tax hike.
Mind you that the marginal rate isn’t the same as the effective rate, so the GOP would likely screw around so that even though there’s a higher rate, they’d end up paying far less than someone in a lower tax bracket because their income is treated different (like say cutting capital gains tax rate significantly, which is where many millionaires see much of their income generated).

I don’t think this is likely to happen, but it does sort of set things up for Trump/Bannon to have their cake and eat to. When “Tax Deform” passes, they’ll be able to claim that they wanted raise taxes on people like Trump, but Congress wouldn’t go for it and they ultimately signed it anyway only because of all the other tremendous stuff in the bill, believe me it’s fantastic.

German birthright citizenship is not automatic: it only applies to children of legal resident immigrants who have been there for more than three years, but can be obtained retroactively after parents have met the minimum stay requirement.
That was the case with my daughter, form 1998, her younger siblings (born after 2000) were German at birth.

Actually, my original point was that the US is a fairly big and diverse place that ended up with the Shitgibbon because of an archaic voting system and voter suppression efforts in some of the states. Not visiting New York City or LA because the “country” is a cesspool only makes slightly more sense than not visiting Paris because Poland, especially considering that size and nature of the cesspools in the US and Europe aren’t really all that different, France just managed to avoid digging up their sewers in the last election in due to the nature of their system and let’s be honest because they recoiled from voting for their version of the Shitgibbon when they saw ours.
Now I sort of understand the reasoning behind not traveling to the US if you expect to be hassled by ICE, but realistically not travelling to liberal areas is a horrible way to fight the damage Trump is doing. States like California, Massachusetts and New York, along with major urban areas in even in deep red states are the key players resisting Trump. They’re also trying to do things like independently abiding by the terms of the Paris agreement. Trump’s already implementing policies that hurt the economies of these areas. His anti-immigrant, antiscience, anti-health direct impacts key parts of the economies in this areas. Tourism in many of these areas is also suffering. Europeans reinforcing Trump’s efforts don’t hurt Trump or his voters. They hurt the people opposing him, they make it more difficult to resist. If you actually want to impact Trump and his MAGAts, you’re going to need to be a little more selective.

The stupid thing is, Obamacare isn’t even that good. This is, after all, the Heritage Foundation’s plan, and a plan that deserved the mockery it got when it was first floated. Only a deranged lobbyist could conceive of a plan to make everyone buy private health insurance and believe that this would somehow reduce the cost of healthcare. It’s madness. And yet here we are, defending it bitterly, because this particular madness stands between Republicans and the poor and elderly, whom the Republicans would much prefer to go away and die quietly once their money has been taken away and after they dutifully vote Republican.
Yes, I’m aware that realpolitik means that working with this flawed plan is better than nothing, and that the realities of America’s pathology mean that actual improvement and reform is a generational task. And I still support Obamacare on the grounds that saving lives is important and that it is good to get Americans used to the idea that healthcare should be a right and a privilege of living in a Western society, rather than a luxury that their owners dole out to the worthy. But it still feels stupid to be defending a plan that Republicans proposed in their delusion and would happily have supported had a black man not signed it. Obamacare is more than just the individual marketplace. It addresses lack of transparency on health care costs (transparency being a means to help consumers make better and cheaper costs for comparable treatments, etc.) There’s little reason that if two doctors have similar records on procedures that one would cost $1000 in one place but $2000 at the hospital the next town over. Or that MRI or CT scans cost $500 in one hospital or $2,000 at the next. Etc.
Transparency on costs is one aspect. Another is the Medicaid expansion, which was what seriously drove down the uninsured rates where states bought into it. The states that refused are the ones with the highest uninsured rates.
Add to that the dependent care coverage to age 26 and the preexisting condition/lifetime caps changes, and it goes beyond the individual mandate to purchase insurance through a marketplace.
It’s also modeled on the MassCare plan, and that helped drive uninsured rate to historic lows in the state.
The entire point of the individual mandate was to give the GOP an attempt to buy-in and support Obamacare, but they decided to oppose everything they previously stood for.
Single payer is perhaps a better outcome than what we have now, but transitioning from multiple private insurers wont be easy. Medicaid/Medicare for all might be the preferred outcome - and both of those programs are responsible for constricting costs since the purchasing power of both programs helps stem the hikes in costs seen year over year for decades. GOP opposition to Obamacare on the basis of an annual premium hike is also misleading since there’s transparency on Obamacare plans not seen elsewhere in the private (employer based) marketplace. Likewise, opposition to Obamacare because there’s a single insurer in some areas is bullshit - employers give their employees one option too and it’s not like we have a choice about that. Insurers have decided it is more cost effective not to compete in some areas because they don’t have a network set up there.
Speaking of networks, the ACA allows insurers to sell equivalent policies across state lines, but they’ve refused to set up plans on that provision because it is cost prohibitive to set up a network somewhere they don’t operate. All the policies in those other states would be out-of-network, and therefore not cost-competitive to the people in those other states who’d buy a plan compared with in-state in-network plans.

IIRC, he simply promoted them using his name (and borrowed money), then leveraged the hell out of them, and sold them off to other suckers investors at inflated values: values likely SO inflated that the huge cash flow from the casino operations was, in effect, irrelevant.

Trump made a classic blunder in opening a business: he opened two casinos in a small city that was barely able to support four existing casinos. Atlantic City is not like Vegas. It’s a small town, which did not have especially good transportation. To sell his investors on his casino projects, Trump said he would use Trump Air to fly people in from NYC and elsewhere. He didn’t. Only high-rollers and celebrities came in by helicopter. Everyone else came in by coach, like plebes.
To build his casinos, Trump borrowed a lot of money. They were over-leveraged, and the market in AC was already saturated. Plus, there were two Trump casinos competing against each other, and against four other “name-brand” casinos, which had been there for a few years already.
So, you had a recipe for disaster. Much of the proceeds had to service debt. Traffic was low, because of competition, poor accessibility and a weak economy. As I understand, the Trump casinos were not all that special — so there was no particular reason to gamble there, as opposed to the others.
That’s how you lose money running a casino. By being stupid.

Likewise, opposition to Obamacare because there’s a single insurer in some areas is bullshit - employers give their employees one option too and it’s not like we have a choice about that. Insurers have decided it is more cost effective not to compete in some areas because they don’t have a network set up there.
Speaking of networks, the ACA allows insurers to sell equivalent policies across state lines, but they’ve refused to set up plans on that provision because it is cost prohibitive to set up a network somewhere they don’t operate. All the policies in those other states would be out-of-network, and therefore not cost-competitive to the people in those other states who’d buy a plan compared with in-state in-network plans.

Good points - IIRC, shortly after Trump opened his casinos in Atlantic City, there was a major economic downturn. That certainly compounded his error (though in fairness, that’s a situation beyond his control).
Only someone with little understanding of market economics would opened two casinos in a saturated market in a sluggish economy. So, we can either conclude Trump is an idiot, or that he planned for the projects to fail, expecting to skate away from crushing debt by declaring bankruptcy.

Trump made a classic blunder in opening a business: he opened two casinos in a small city that was barely able to support four existing casinos. Atlantic City is not like Vegas. It’s a small town, which did not have especially good transportation. To sell his investors on his casino projects, Trump said he would use Trump Air to fly people in from NYC and elsewhere. He didn’t. Only high-rollers and celebrities came in by helicopter. Everyone else came in by coach, like plebes.

That’s how you lose money running a casino. By being stupid.

Tyler Jarrell, 18, of Columbus, Ohio, was pronounced deceased at the fairgrounds. Seven others were injured and transported to area hospitals
At least four of the victims remained hospitalized as of late Thursday morning. Medical officials say three of the victims will require more surgery as well as rehab due to the injuries.
Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin says one of the rows of seats on the Fire Ball ride “snapped off.”
Ohio Governor John Kasich said the Fair will be open Thursday; all rides will be closed until they are inspected again. Kasich said Fire Ball had been inspected several times, including by a third-party company. Ohio Department of Agriculture chief ride inspector Michael Vartorella said the inspection process is lengthy, as the ride has several pieces to it.
Kasich also said that 11 rides did not open at all on Wednesday. At least four were still closed after inspections.”The fair is about the best things in life, and tonight with this accident it becomes a terrible, terrible tragedy,” he said.
Amusements of America is the company providing rides at the State Fair this year. More information about the Fire Ball can be found on their website. It is described as an “aggressive thrill ride.”
Ohio Gov. John Kasich released a statement Wednesday evening:
“I am terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio’s fair. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those grieving and injured. I have ordered a full investigation into this incident and have ordered that all fair rides be shut down until additional safety inspections can be completed.”
Rides are inspected each year in the week leading up to the fair. Rides are also subject to spot inspections through the time the fair is open.
Wednesday was the opening day for the Fair, which runs until Aug. 6.
The Ohio State Fair released the following statement on their Facebook page:
“Our hearts are heavy for the families of those involved in last night’s tragic accident. We have shut down all rides until the state has inspected each and every ride again and deemed them to be safe. Gates will open at 9 am and other activities will resume as scheduled.”

Four policemen burst into the room and arrested both the woman and her boyfriend for “domestic violence”.
I suspect they hit the wrong address.
Both have since been charged with assault and/or domestic violence.

But that’s not simplification. Simplification means addressing items of income, deductions, exclusions, credits, and includes depreciation and NOLs.
It means addressing capital gains and treatment of income by and from nonprofits. It means addressing the mortgage interest deduction and state and local taxes.
Looks like the Russia thing has the potential to create something of a schism in the GOP.
Bucking Idaho’s two GOP senators, the Kootenai County Republican Party has approved a resolution praising Russia for resisting a “progressive globalist agenda.”
The county Republican Central Committee narrowly passed the resolution on Tuesday favoring friendlier relations with Russia and condemning the Russian sanctions bill that was sponsored by Idaho GOP Sen. Mike Crapo and passed overwhelmingly by both the U.S. House and Senate.
The resolution praises Russia and denounces Crapo and Idaho GOP Sen. Jim Risch for supporting the measure. It also calls for them to “re-examine their foreign policy orientations” and adopt “an anti-globalist, America-first foreign policy orientation.”
Lindsay Nothern, communications director for Crapo, said Wednesday his office didn’t know about the Kootenai County GOP resolution.

i understand what you’re after. i guess i wasnt clear
on the campaign trail, simplification is always talked about in terms of the number of pages of tax code. in the legislature that’s ignored and “simplifying” the brackets comes into play (which is really the tax cut - or hike)
its those thousands of pages that define what’s income if you dont earn a salary, own an unincorporated business, what expenses can be deducted from gross sales, what income is exempt (child support) or not (alimony) and on and on. defining taxable income - essentially the tax base, is extremely tricky
as for 1040 deductions (and i assume that includes credits and above the line stuff), eliminating all of them for anyone under 2m income (or did you actually mean “worth” and how would you ever measure that?) would be a terrible unleveling of the national playing field
then you’d have to greatly expand the 1040ez which would be counterproductive to it’s purpose because currently it only recognizes wages, interest and unemployment as income. nothing else, and there’s lots of other types of income that is and should be taxed.
while some public policy can and does creep into taxation, taxing can be fair and equitable. or simple. it generally can’t be both fair and simple at the same time
its the complexity that makes it more fair (imo)
