Paul Ryan: GOP will ‘stick the landing on tax reform’

“It [tax reform] is more important to us than anything that we get tax reform done,” Ryan told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo. “Because we think it is absolutely critical for strong economic growth.”

And yet everyday we are told how the “Trump economy” is booming with a record high stock market, low unemployment, positive job growth….what gives??

Martin Longman has a good essay on verifying our vote. Nothing really new; just a good summary.

The way things stand, I can’t blame people for lacking confidence in the integrity of the result. In general, if a system is vulnerable to hacking, it will be hacked. The protections we have in place are clearly insufficient to give the people confidence, and that’s a dangerous situation for a system that relies on the consent of the governed.

After some research: He has ten days or it’s a pocket veto, unless Congress adjourns. Another interesting effect of Democrats not closing shop.

So, if he doesn’t sign it, Congress can act in ten days.

From research, it’s a pocket veto. Congress would have to override the veto.

Edit: I stand corrected.

Pocket Veto. If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.

I dunno: with a competent Administration in office, I’d be thinking this is all a carefully-choreographed dance-routine;
1) So Far:
Congress enacts sanctions to piss of the Russians: Trump “regretfully” agrees to sign on: Russians retaliate by booting US personnel:
2) Next steps:
Trump sends the Secretary of State senior diplomatic people Ivanka to Moscow to talk things over: in a couple of days, there’s a huge public BFD ceremony where it’s announced “all differences are resolved” : nobody is expelled: we get our property back, they get their property back (the ones Obama seized); President Asshole gets to dump on Obama some more - and, buried in all the onanistic boilerplate: a veto of the sanctions bill, with the Administration’s “promise” to “revisit the issue as the situation warrants”.

Of course, this is presuming a competent Administration; with the Trump circus, who knows….

re: #45 Eclectic Cyborg

Yes, the money has to flow if it is part of the law.

The only way to turn off a spigot is to turn off the entire funding machine, i.e., a shutdown of the government because a funding bill has not passed.

This is basically what Trump is threatening. He’s willing to let the entire US government go without funding.

But coming from a guy who liked bankruptcy court in order to skip paying, we should not be surprised by this.

As far as I know, never has there been a case where the Secretary of the Treasury refused to disburse money that was required by law.

Funding bills in Congress are done so the checks don’t bounce. Of course US Treasury checks never will bounce because the Fed will accept said checks at their window in lieu of Fed notes.

If Congress prevents the bill’s return by being adjourned during the 10-day period, and the president does not sign the bill, a “pocket veto” occurs and the bill does not become law.

It’s the majority party who decides when they’re in session and when they’re in recess.

While Republicans control the Senate now, the only way they can formally adjourn — which would set up a period when recess appointments are allowable — is to pass an adjournment resolution. The problem is that Democrats can filibuster that resolution, which they would do to prevent Trump from making recess appointments.

Naaah, I think it’s the other way round: the Congressional GOP (House and Senate) could probably care less about what hacks/ideologues/idiots Trump appoints to all those vacancies, assuming he’d even bother: Dems keeping Congress (House? Senate? I’m unclear on the rules) in pro forma session is what’s more-likely to piss them off. Not enough to avoid their vacations, though: they can still gripe about Democratic obstruction from their home computers/cellphones.

Oh no he didn’t. Oh yes he did!

New Jersey governor Chris Christie got in the face of a Chicago Cubs fan and said “Yeah, you’re a big shot” after the fans in attendance at Miller Park on Sunday afternoon were reportedly teasing him, according to Ben Hutchinson of WISN 12.

In a video, Christie can be seen holding some nachos before going nose-to-nose with the Cubs fan. The Cubs fan was asked by one of the people around him what did Christie say and the fan replied: “You want to act like a big shot?”

I read on the njdotcom site yesterday that Christie claims he’s never read the memes that were created after he and his family were the only ones on a beach on the 4th of July. He went on to say those memes “hurt” his kids more than anything else in his eight years in office.
Is there anything he won’t lie about? I would think they’d be most hurt to know their dad has a 15% approval rating, which indicates he’s a failure in his job.

Why would this trouble Trump? Russians overpaid him for his properties. That is the Trump business model. Allow hostile countries to pay him mucho dollars and then he engages in policies that will help them (except, of course, if Congress intervenes).

Let’s see if the anti-Russian law actually takes effect. Or if the GOP backs out after all if Trump doesn’t sign the legislation.

At this point i suspect Republicans probably don’t want him making recess appointments either and are more than happy to let the Dems continue regardless of their griping about obstruction.

Someone told Trump there is this thing called “recess appointments”. That is when he started attacking Sessions in an attempt to get him to resign. The Senate GOP members will not let him replace Sessions with a recess appointment - but they are very happy to blame democrats for this “obstruction”. Keeps them cosy with Trump and Sessions.

In April 2013, a little more than two years before Trump rode the escalator to the ground floor of Trump Tower to kick off his presidential campaign, police burst into Unit 63A of the high-rise and rounded up 29 suspects in two gambling rings. The operation, which prosecutors called “the world’s largest sports book,” was run out of condos in Trump Tower—including the entire fifty-first floor of the building. In addition, unit 63A—a condo directly below one owned by Trump—served as the headquarters for a “sophisticated money-laundering scheme” that moved an estimated $100 million out of the former Soviet Union, through shell companies in Cyprus, and into investments in the United States. The entire operation, prosecutors say, was working under the protection of Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov, whom the FBI identified as a top Russian vor closely allied with Semion Mogilevich. In a single two-month stretch, according to the federal indictment, the money launderers paid Tokhtakhounov $10 million.

Tokhtakhounov, who had been indicted a decade earlier for conspiring to fix the ice-skating competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics, was the only suspect to elude arrest. For the next seven months, the Russian crime boss fell off the radar of Interpol, which had issued a red alert. Then, in November 2013, he suddenly appeared live on international television—sitting in the audience at the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. Tokhtakhounov was in the VIP section, just a few seats away from the pageant owner, Donald Trump.

It snowed that night, hard. I never got to test out the V-12 engine, had to drive slow all night. My date and I were the only sober kids in that car that night.

Got home after 2 a.m., mom was still up, sitting in the living room reading. I walked in and she said “OK, you’re home. I’m going to bed.” And that was it.

It is a lovely cool evening here, after a warm, but not hot day. Tomorrow may well be different-National Weather Service is predicting a high around 95°. Yuck.
But I was able to get some baking done today, and I washed one of the cars without dealing with heatstroke, so that’s all good. I also tracked down the origin of several weevils wandering around the kitchen. A bag of rice, which was quickly disposed of. I don’t think they got into anything else, but I will remain alert for a few days.

Good evening, all. Considering the previous few posts here, I debated whether things had gone too far downhill…

We hit 107º here, yesterday. *Much* cooler today, well, um…106º.

I knew there was a reason I don’t live where you do.
They’ve dropped our forecast temperature for tomorrow a bit, but Tues./Wed. are still supposed to be hot. The weird thing is this heat will actually be more intense in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle will be in the 90°s mid-week.

My brother and his wife are going camping with friends in northwestern CA this week. They’re concerned about hiking in the heat they’ll be seeing even at 5000’.
(Meanwhile we traded cars so they could have our Forester with its higher clearance. I could barely get his car with all its sensors and beeping into the garage. There was plenty of room, but the “safety systems” didn’t agree.)

We’re having a terrible infestation this year here in west central Illinois. Much worse than usual.

New York as well. Heard a story about it on the radio earlier.

Hey—Nikki’s an ACCOUNTANT (not a very good one, but…)

When she was running for governator, AP story said:

On the campaign trail, state GOP gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley frequently cites her experience as the accountant for her family’s clothing store, saying she oversaw its growth to a multimillion dollar operation, and the state needs such skills.
But records obtained by The Associated Press show the family company has been penalized three times since 2003 for not paying taxes. In each case, the taxes were at least 19 months past due.

Two of the tax liens were for failing to pay corporate income taxes and one was for not turning over taxes withheld from employee checks. The company paid nearly $4,000 to remove them, with 43 percent covering penalties and interest. Credit records on the business show it frequently pays operating bills more than a month late, compared with an industry average of 10 days late.

I’m not sure what happens in So Cal, but they do occasionally close parks up here largely for fire danger on very hot, dry days.

Not finished yet - long! But so far, very interesting re-visit with F. Lee Bailey. Good night now!

The Rise and Fall of F. Lee Bailey, the Lawyer Who Set O.J. Simpson Free

More than 20 years ago, Bailey helped Simpson beat murder charges. Now, with Simpson up for parole, the bankrupt, disbarred Bailey opens up about his own incredible saga.

Lee Bailey is forever ready to share brutal opinions on the lawyers who have crossed him over the years. Marcia Clark, who in the midst of a row during the O.J. Simpson trial called him a liar? “A harridan,” he growls. His Simpson co-defense counsel and ex-friend Robert Shapiro? “At least mildly sociopathic.” David McGee, the United States Attorney from Florida who doggedly pursued Bailey for helping himself to millions of dollars the government said was not his to spend? “Totally dishonest.”
