“…An American institution since the colonial days, the grand jury has long played an important role in Criminal Law. The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says that a person suspected of a federal crime cannot be tried until a grand jury has determined that there is enough reason to charge the person.”

Carried over from the previous thread, because by the time I dug up the information and posted it, the thread was dead.

This idea of Kushner’s to put government data “on the cloud” (on private servers IOKIYAR) is probably related to the fact his brother owns a piece of a computer company that does exactly that … as you recall, the firm Opengov (structured to do this) was invited to sit at a conference with Trump along with Facebook’s and Apple’s and other major tech companies CEOs.

Kushner Family Owns Piece of Valley Start-Up at Trump Tech Confab (Goes to the Silicone Valley Business Journal, more at the link from July 14):

Palantir Technologies Inc., the Palo Alto analytics unicorn co-founded by Peter Thiel, apparently wasn’t the only venture-backed company at a White House tech roundtable organized last month by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that OpenGov Inc., a Redwood City startup whose CEO had a prominent seat between the CEOs of Akamai and VMware, is part owned by Thrive Capital — a venture firm run by Kushner’s brother, Joshua.

OpenGov’s 1,500 state and local government customers use it to streamline and improve the transparency of their budgeting while better tracking and evaluating how money is being spent.

It is used in every state but three — Louisiana, South Dakota and Vermont — and in about a third of California’s cities and counties, including in San Jose, Palo Alto and Cupertino.

Jared Kushner was on Thrive’s board when it invested in the company over several rounds going back to 2013. He sold his interest in Thrive to his brother in January and left the board at that time.

Of note, Opengov is worth only a tiny fraction of companies such as Microsoft or Facebook. However, if Opengov were to get a contract with the Feds, Kushner’s family stands to make a stack of money as high as Pike’s Peak.

Remember, when dealing with conservatives, always look for the way they are trying to make money out of the government they claim to hate.

Very Sane Trump Mob Demands Total Muslim Jew Globalist HR McMaster’s Head on a Stick (Goes to Wonkette), more at the link:

Better get your scorecards out, because there’s an all new round of White House Thunderdome underway! Trump yelling at Jeff Sessions is so last week of July — the new fight is National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster versus the foul spawn of Steve Bannon and Michael Flynn, McMaster’s predecessor. Wednesday, we looked at the weird wordvomit that got Bannon pal Rich Higgins fired from the National Security Council. Wednesday night, McMaster up and fired Ezra Cohen-Watnick, a young twerp Flynn brought to the NSC as senior director for intelligence programs. When Flynn was booted and McMaster took over the job, Cohen-Watnick — who was handling sensitive intelligence information at the tender age of 30, and was the guy Devin Nunes, “recused” shitweasel chair of the House Intelligence Committee, relied on in his heroic quest to give the White House secret intelligence he got from the White House about “unmasking” and “wire tapps” — was one of the first people McMaster wanted to get rid of, because the CIA reportedly couldn’t stand him. But Cohen-Watnick had the love of Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner to keep him warm, so he went to Trump and asked to be kept on, and the president overruled McMaster.

But dynamics, as they say, have shifted, and now Cohen-Watnick is the third Bannonista in three weeks to get shitcanned. The other, now former senior director for the Middle East Derek Harvey, got the boot last week. Harvey had earlier this year presented McMaster with a list of NSC “holdovers” from the Obama administration and insisted they be fired as “Deep State” adversaries of Trump, but McMaster said nah, no way.

If you are planning to travel to Wyoming for the eclipse, the state has put width and weight restrictions on vehicles, including recreational vehicles for Aug 20-22. This is due to anticipated heavy traffic due to the solar eclipse. (Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle are the best spots to view the eclipse, due to length.)

The state will block entry on those days to such vehicles. Vehicles that already have permits will not have them honoured on those days.

For details, see the Wyoming Department of Transportation Website.

dot.state.wy.us

In Nebraska, oversize vehicles will be prohibited from August 18 to August 22.

dot.nebraska.gov

Nebraska also has a map of the eclipse route, along with travel tips for the eclipse that would be good in any state.

They are emboldened by the belief that no one will do anything about it.

We’ll have to see. I don’t expect the GOP-controlled Congress to do anything until the moment hits when they think they might lose reëlection bids.

We’ll have to see if Mr. Mueller’s or Mr. Schniderman’s investigations have enough merit to warrant (pun intended) subpoenas or indictments.

What I fear is that amongst liberals, if the New York AG or Special Counsel decide they do not have enough evidence to bring any charges, they will think “the fix is in.” That would be a disaster if liberals throw the justice system under the bus the way conservatives want to.

Charles Pierce on grand juries:

See, here’s the thing about grand juries. They don’t go away. They don’t care whom they steamroll. They don’t care about how good the chocolate cake is at your country club. The Electoral College is irrelevant to them. Your gold commode does not impress them. Grand juries are rampaging beasts eagerly going where the prosecutors want them to go. All of this is true of any grand jury anywhere at any time. In Washington, the beast is bigger and the rampage more ferocious than it is anywhere else. …

They can’t rein it in. If Mueller wants to look at how the Trump Organization did its business with Russian interests before the president* even thought of being president, he can do that. If he wants to conduct exploratory surgery on Jared Kushner’s financial records, he can do that, too. If he wants to examine the working conditions in the Chinese factories where Ivanka’s line of shoes are made, it’s off to Asia we go. Meanwhile, congresscritters on both sides of the aisle are pushing legislation aimed at protecting Mueller from presidential retribution. In other words, as Blackstone once put it, shit’s getting really real.

Anymouse 🌹  Aug 4, 2017 • 12:22:24am
Using Bureau of Justice Statistics data, the news site FiveThirtyEight found that federal grand juries declined to return an indictment in 11 of the 162,000 cases that U.S. attorneys prosecuted in 2010. That’s a no-indictment rate of less than .007 percent. Keep in mind that this figure applies to federal cases — aggregate data for state grand jury decisions is harder to come by — so the numbers aren’t directly comparable, but it does give a sense of how rare a no true bill is in any type of grand jury.

On this side of the pond:
The Stockholm Holocaust memorial - A restoration of human dignity and a warning against inhumanity

Next to Berzelii Park in Stockholm is a memorial to approximately 8,500 European Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis during World War II. Covering an entire wall within the courtyard of Stockholm’s Great Synagogue, each of the individuals listed on The Monument to the Memory of the Holocaust Victims was a relative of a survivor who avoided extermination and settled in Sweden.

“The monument is meant to serve as symbolic tombstones for those who have no marked graves. It is an attempt to give the victims back their personal identity, and dignity, which the Nazis and their accomplices tried so hard to obliterate,” said Roman Wroblewski, a second-generation Holocaust survivor who conceived the idea for the monument in autumn 1993.

Like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the Stockholm Holocaust memorial is a name monument, a type that lists the names of individuals who were killed in the same general timeframe and location. In several respects, however, the Stockholm Holocaust memorial is unique.

And in the section of conservatives behaving badly, there are reports that former right-wing alliance finance secretary Anders Borg showed his … endowment … and threatened the host during a party in the Stockholm archipelago, according to Aftonbladet.

My sister paid for the whole thing. I’m told it was $30,000+ for the weekend.

I attracted every child at the wedding with my guitar and voice. So I sang some Ween. “The Stallion, Pt. 3” and “Take Me Away” were quite popular. I made the children dance with a lick by Phish (the song “Guyute). My sister said I was the best thing to happen for all the children at her wedding. It was fun and surreal!

Meanwhile, the Dallas Morning News is on the case.

Donald Trump and the political action committees for Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Lindsey Graham, John Kasich and John McCain accepted $7.35 million in contributions from a Ukrainian-born oligarch who is the business partner of two of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s favorite oligarchs and a Russian government bank.

During the 2015-2016 election season, Ukrainian-born billionaire Leonid “Len” Blavatnik contributed $6.35 million to leading Republican candidates and incumbent senators. Mitch McConnell was the top recipient of Blavatnik’s donations, collecting $2.5 million for his GOP Senate Leadership Fund under the names of two of Blavatnik’s holding companies, Access Industries and AI Altep Holdings, according to Federal Election Commission documents and opensecrets.org.

Marco Rubio’s Conservative Solutions PAC and his Florida First Project received $1.5 million through Blavatnik’s two holding companies. Other high dollar recipients of funding from Blavatnik were PACS representing Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker at $1.1 million, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham at $800,000, Ohio Governor John Kasich at $250,000 and Arizona Senator John McCain at $200,000.

In January, Quartz reported that Blavatnik donated another $1 million to Trump’s Inaugural Committee. Ironically, the shared address of Blavatnik’s companies is directly across the street from Trump Tower on 5th Avenue in New York.

Well now. Things are getting mighty interesting, I’d say.

Chris Matthews showed a couple minutes. When Trump went into complaining about Hillary’s 33,000 deleted emails and how ‘they’ wanted to take his victory and the crowds hope for a great America away they switched away with Matthews saying something like “his handlers put that in there, you can tell because he had to try to read it off the teleprompter.” And that was it.

Throughout the evening MSNBC shows they’d play some of his crazier lines and then took him apart.

That rally really was scary. He is building his army of supporters to attack if they try to kick him out. I hope the Republicans are watching the monster they built because he is turning those same Trump army members against them too.

That could well be what he’s thinking - as to whether it succeeds or not, that’s a different matter.

The greater fear on my part is that such an “army” could easily turn into a white supremacist domestic terrorist movement. Sort of like Posse Comitatus or The Order on steroids, inflamed by alt-right rhetoric that they’re victims of a so-called ‘white genocide’ (aka, the Honkeycaust).

Sadly, in the worst case scenario, we could be looking at a decade or so of far-right domestic terrorism, primarily aimed at America’s metropolitan areas and their residents.

153
lawhawk  Aug 4, 2017 • 6:27:00am

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump’s busy touting the economic numbers that came in today, which match 14 quarters of economic growth under Obama. The same figures Trump would bash as bogus/hoax figures under Obama he’s touting as great and a sign he’s doing wonders for the economy.

Trump has done nothing to affect the economy. Nothing. No budget, and his regulatory actions to date are barely perceptible as a function of the economy. They’ve barely registered.

Of course, that doesn’t stop mental midgets like James Woods from claiming that it’s pathological the hate for Trump.

Pathological is a great word… to describe Trump and his fact-free supporters.

Pointing this out, however, has caused my timeline to become a shit show of MAGAnomic bullshit. The block button is being liberally applied for sheer dumbassery (and more).

Good Morning from muggy & flash floody Southern California. Local am radio news is abuzz with stories of *gasp* Mexican military speedboats at Dana point. Well no, our military got new stealth coastal speedboats for special operations. TheDrive has the info buried in a story about these boats deploying to the Middle East.

This ties into this mornings epistemic closure, various kinds of ways how we fool ourselves. Something weird in the sky is more likely Boeing than aliens. If you hear hooves on this continent you think horses not zebras. But some cases are more extreme.

When your fantasies seem to come true in a Donald Trump rally speech, you tune right out of TV shopping, put down the third morning beer and listen carefully. ‘Cause The President Of The United States just proved all your delusions accurate. Trump’s now spending 3 weeks at Bedminster at one of his Emoluments violation golf courses playing golf at a rate not seen since Ike. Heck, a few news outlets are calling it a working vacation.

Those same outlets didn’t identify Obama vacations as such; they complained Obama was taking vacations. Trump attacked Obama for vacations and playing golf, and yet Trump’s playing golf and vacationing at a far greater clip than Obama did.

They’re left to making personal attacks on Mueller.
They’re left to projecting all of Trump’s behaviors on to their enemies/opponents. We see this with James Woods and the rest of the Trump twits.

The reality is that Trump has lived in a bubble of his own creation and it’s a fact-free zone. He populates it with people who tell him exactly what he wants to hear, and boots those who don’t. He is a needy craven old man who can’t do the job he sought out, and instead is left bullying and projecting his failures on to others.

All the while, the criminal activities of those around him continue to be investigated by Mueller, the FBI, and Congress.

The right wingers last gasp is that they’re wondering why the investigations are taking so long.

Right. We’re just a couple of months into the investigation into Trump by Mueller. Yet, years after investigating Benghazi, Trump and his nitwit brigade are still complaining that Hillary wasn’t investigated enough despite all those investigations and testimony given found no wrongdoing.

Yeah, on some unconscious level, they recognize they may well be truly screwed.

You know, regarding the bolded part, honestly……..winning the presidency is probably the single worst thing that ever could’ve happened to Trump. He’s now under a level of scrutiny he’s never experienced and he can’t just BS, bully, or buy his way out of it. I would imagine that for him, this must be a truly disconcerting experience; this situation is simply beyond his comprehension.

“Civil war”, who against who? The scared, armed, guns for all (of the right color) “patriots” against the blood thirsty killers around every corner? Seems against these blood thirsty killers the “patriots” would be hard pressed for a win. Or maybe against those wimpy, unarmed liberals? Seems those wimpy liberals are not a threat to these scared, armed “patriots” so why bother to be armed everywhere? So many disparate feelings to rectify in such a small cranium.

Trump has done nothing to affect the economy. Nothing. No budget, and his regulatory actions to date are barely perceptible as a function of the economy. They’ve barely registered.

[Embedded content]

I’m going to disagree with you here. Trump has enacted several policies that impact the economy over both the short and long term, almost all negatively. His actions on immigration and travel have already impacted the education, medical and tourism segments of the economy and are probably causing lower job growth numbers. These policies will likely impact long term job and economic growth as well, given that a substantial portion of our entrepreneurs come from these immigrants and major urban areas that drive our economy depend on immigrants as a source of labor for everything from food service workers to corporate CEOs.

The Story Behind Jared Kushner’s Curious Acceptance Into Harvard

Charles Kushner differed from his peers on the committee in another way; he had a criminal record. Five years after Jared entered Harvard, the elder Kushner pleaded guilty in 2004 to tax violations, illegal campaign donations, and retaliating against a witness. (As it happens, the prosecutor in the case was Chris Christie, recently ousted as the head of Trump’s transition team.) Charles Kushner had hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, who was cooperating with federal authorities. Kushner then had a videotape of the tryst sent to his sister. He was sentenced to two years in federal prison.

I completed my analysis, which justified my hunch. Of the 400-plus tycoons on Harvard’s list—which included people who were childless or too young to have college-age offspring—more than half had sent at least one child to the university.

I got into a shitshow on Twitter with a bunch of MENA Christians with a serious persecution complex in the past two days, and this one just proves how self-absorbed they are:

Claim to be proud Christians, but refuse to acknowledge the suffering of other Christians who aren’t like them. Kind of like Chaldean Christians in Michigan who voted for Trump thinking they would be safe from harm, until ICE agents started arresting undocumented Chaldeans with criminal records awaiting deportation back to Iraq.

And the ironic thing is this: when shit gets real for them, they are always begging for help from Hispanic and black churches when their civil rights get violated (even though they regurgitate tired RWNJ talking points). The same ones they slag off because they claim they never spoke out on their plight.

Sessions and Coats are busy complaining about leaks and how they’re going to go after leakers.

The entire reason there are so many leaks is because this is an incompetent WH and everyone is fighting to stay around. That means screwing over everyone else to show their personal loyalty. It means throwing everyone else under the bus.

It means leaking all kinds of salacious stories and indications that Trump is beyond incompetent in his job/role as president.

The incompetence and leaks starts with Trump himself. He created this culture of craven incompetence. The leaks are spewing forth like a burst sewer pipe precisely because Trump has treated this like a game. He doesn’t care about the consequences of his or his admin’s action - only that the people around him are loyal to him.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Baltimore officials Thursday that if the city wants to participate in a new federal crime-fighting program, they must cooperate with Trump administration immigration enforcement efforts that the state attorney general says could be unconstitutional, at a jail they do not control.

The state, not the city, operates the Baltimore city jail. And Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh has issued an opinion that honoring so-called administrative detainers — requests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that individuals suspected of immigration violations be held for up to 48 hours after they’re scheduled to be released — could violate their constitutional rights.

In a letter sent Thursday to Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis, the Department of Justice asked Baltimore and three other cities to show that they will honor the requests if they want to participate in the new Public Safety Partnership program.

“The Department of Justice is committed to supporting our law enforcement at every level, and that’s why we’re asking ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions to stop making their jobs harder,” Sessions said in a statement.

Neither Davis nor the Police Department controls when the city jail holds or releases detainees. The facility is run by the state Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

Trump initial budget policy document would have slashed the Coast Guard budget by 12%. That’s at the same time Trump was saying we needed more border security; the Coast Guard protects our borders - you know, the seas and oceans that border our neighbors and they are tasked with drug interdiction and stopping human trafficking.

How exactly would a wingnut vs. dem civil war take place?

Would folks in Alabama get in their trucks and just start shooting people at random from Massachusetts (who voted for Republican Mitt Romney) or would they just start shooting people who look like they vote for Dems in huge majorities?

Hmmmmm?

It would play out like this. Dems win back the house in 2018 and hold their own in the Senate. They impeach Trump for blatant crimes unearthed by Mueller. The crimes would have to be bad enough for the Republicans in the Senate to agree to impeach as well.

The Trump fascist crowd would cry foul and refuse to accept whoever was put in place to replace Trump. That would mean even Pence. If Pence is removed as well and Pelosi is put in place I would imagine some states would stop complying with the federal government and be in open defiance and talk about succession would be pretty loud. If they did succeed then I suppose CW2 would occur.

Before full out succession by certain states a lot of open defiance and maybe some really ugly stuff involving dark people. All fueled by the right wing media and AM radio.

Wasn’t there some scandal associated with Starr at Baylor University? I dimly remember it…..something like he covered up a series of sexual assaults or something.

In any event, Starr is the last fucking person on the face of the planet who has room to talk about “fishing expeditions”.

I swear a lot of conservatives think no one has a memory. Like a Newt Gingrich…they think after some time they can recycle themselves and everyone will have forgotten their pasts.

And then there is Trump that thinks people don’t remember what he said last week because he can’t remember what he said 5 minutes ago.

I agree; that’s pretty much how it would go down. If Trump and Pence were both impeached and removed, and Pelosi becomes a caretaker POTUS until 2020, yeah, the Trumpites would lose their shit and most likely, there would not only be loud and open talk of secession, there’d likely be violence as well.

in regards to Starr’s remarks about Mueller not going on a “fishing expedition” for his special investigation made me want to respond IOKIYAR and then I remembered, Mueller is in fact a REPUBLICAN…..

this is what is so incredibly crazy about what is going on…

we have a President who has in fact already admitted to Obstruction of Justice, that’s what did in Nixon and these guys (Congress) haven’t even blinked yet…

We toss Perjury on top of that for the likes of:

Sessions
Kushner
Manafort
Flynn

again, already documented cases of that in place, either by forms omission or statements made in front of Congress. Again, nothing about this being done by Congress other than the watching of the investigation unfold.

So we had Starr, take roughly three years to uncover a willingly provided blowjob when he started investigating real estate transactions and we have roughly six months of Mueller, actually impaneling a Grand Jury for crimes when Starr didn’t even have a crime to prosecute.

times like these just make you want to be on the survivor council and vote these fuckers off the island.

Trump wants the authoritarian dummies who fall for his bullshit to go berserk when he’s brought to justice.

All he cares about is Trump. His supporters can get themselves killed by law-enforcement, or kill their own neighbors who aren’t on-board the “Trump-train”(wreck), and he’s fine with that.

It’s a personal decision, informed consent. Embrace family planning now, or it will have to be imposed from without and random —disease, natural disaster, a government or a religion, a king, a employer …

It’s economically stupid not to have a national and world policy on “Comprehensive Sex Ed and Cost Free Birth Control.”

So, that’s the same checklist that he had up at the start of his run in the WH.

You’d think they’d have added to the list. Nope.

They’re still stuck on stupid and can’t move past the fact that they’ve barely gotten beyond the EOs they initially ran with. That goes to the lack of a policy shop and inability to move policy forward in any substantive or orderly manner.

That again is entirely on Trump and his incompetent staff/admin. They don’t know how to do any of this stuff, and Trump’s worthless when it comes to pushing policy because he’s got the attention span of a gnat.

It’s a saving grace that he’s this incompetent. The slightest bit of competence would have meant the end of Obamacare and so much more.

Saw an article in the Atlantic that made an interesting point:

He is also unusually clear and complex in his discussions. Some publications, most notably STAT, have picked up on a marked decline in the president’s vocabulary and syntax over past statements. But while Trump is brash and unprepared in these calls, he is comparatively articulate—raising the possibility that he is intentionally dumbing down his speech in public, not only in rallies and speeches but also in press interviews, where he is sometimes entirely incoherent.

432
lawhawk  Aug 4, 2017 • 11:43:33am

This is the level of batcrap insanity the GOP is devolving into:

Donors suing to get their money back from the GOP because the GOP couldn’t repeal Obamacare. They’re actually claiming fraud.

The donors wouldn’t entirely be wrong either. The GOP leadership has perpetuated a fraud: they led everyone in their party to think that they could or should repeal Obamacare and that they had a plan. Turns out they couldn’t even agree on the repeal part.

But the donor suit will be thrown out because this is a political question, and the politicians lost the critical votes. The donors were stupid enough to buy this baffling BS. Just don’t expect the donors to learn anything from this episode.

Man, say what you want about Rick Smith, but he deals up pure, uncut snark with the best of them.

With the news that special counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury to investigate Russia’s election-tampering and the Trump campaign’s role in it, Thursday was the single worst day in the single worst week of the Trump presidency.

Even before this devastating news, if you wanted to pick a week where the Trump administration got its ass handed to it at virtually every turn, this would be it. At almost every moment in the news cycle, Team Trump was getting beaten like a rented mule. The fallout of the Anthony Scaramucci firing is barely cool to the touch, and already this week’s pile of steaming radioactive waste from this White House is hip-deep.
Virtually nothing is going right for Trump.
