What’s More Dangerous: Leaks, or an Incompetent President Unfit for Office?

The leaks are a symptom, not the disease
Opinion • Views: 51,344

When transcripts of Donald Trump’s calls with foreign leaders were published yesterday by the Washington Post, many people were disturbed that this information was leaked to the press, pointing out that it’s dangerous and destabilizing when a president’s private calls don’t remain private.

And now, our far right Attorney General Jeff Sessions has announced a crackdown on leaks, threatening to begin subpoenaing reporters who publish leaked information.

But this is precisely the wrong lesson to learn from this incident. My take on it is much more in line with this one by Brian Beutler: Keep the Trump Leaks Coming.

The most immediate effect of the disclosures, though, wasn’t to recenter the national political debate on the question of Trump’s obvious unfitness for his job, but to prompt a separate debate over the propriety of the leak.

“Leaking the transcript of a presidential call to a foreign leader is unprecedented, shocking, and dangerous,” argued The Atlantic’s David Frum. “It is vitally important that a president be able to speak confidentially—and perhaps even more important that foreign leaders understand that they can reply in confidence.”

National leaders should indeed need to be able to trust that their discussions with one another will remain secure. But we are far from the point where foreign leaders assume transcripts of their calls with Trump, let alone future presidents, will end up on the front pages. Many have been quick to assume that this leak will have a chilling effect on U.S. relations with other countries, without stopping to ponder the likelihood that some foreign leaders might be relieved to learn that factions within the U.S. government are taking extraordinary steps to weaken this particular president.

If there are norms worth fretting over here, they aren’t the ones that govern whistleblowing, but the ones that should govern what U.S. political leaders do when the president is too incompetent to serve. It is because of their cowardice—their refusal to uphold norms they were elected and appointed to guard—that these transcripts leaked in the first place.

Are leaks like this dangerous? Maybe so. But in my opinion it’s far more dangerous that we have an incompetent, incoherent buffoon in the Oval Office — in an administration that’s increasingly dominated by extreme right wing military members. And that danger needs much more attention, because it’s destroying the standing of the United States in the world community and putting us all in very great peril.

Sessions compared the massive amount of leaks ongoing to those under Obama.

That’s a great comparison. An administration that was competent with no scandals, let alone investigations versus one in chaos from day 1 (actually from day one of Trump entering the campaign in 2015).

Trump has been a swirling mass of chaos and criminality from the get-go. Nothing he’s done to date has quelled any fears. His actions and statements have revealed a man who is completely out of his element and incapable of speech/conduct befitting the office of the President. He doesn’t know a goddamned thing about anything, and he’s surrounded himself with people who will tell him what he wants to hear, rather than what he needs to hear.

The leaks are coming from all across the White House and his agencies - they’re his staffers. These aren’t some deep state bullshit. It’s vendettas by staffers against others in the WH because they figure throwing others under the bus will help them stick around longer. This too goes back to Trump valuing loyalty over competence.

We’re reaping the folly of all that Trump has done.

As for punishment, it appears that the stocks are still legal in this country.

In United States v. Gementera, the defendant was convicted of mail theft and sentenced, among other measures, to stand in front of a post office for eight hours wearing a sandwich board that read: “I stole mail. This is my punishment.” The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld this sentence, finding that the district court did not impose it solely for the purpose of humiliation, but also to serve the criminal-justice goals of deterrence and rehabilitation. The Ninth Circuit further found that the alternative sentence did not violate the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment because it was “within the limits of civilized standards” and was not coupled with a lengthy prison sentence. Gementera suggests, in short, that the U.S. Constitution permits judges to sentence a criminal to the stocks in at least some cases.

In 1989 the Arkansas town of Dermott passed a curfew law punishable by up to thirty days in jail for the offender and up to two days in the stocks for the offender’s parents. The city almost immediately removed the stockade punishment because, among other things, the city did not have a stockade and had allocated no funds to build one.[

Normally I would be against humiliating punishments like this, but this is the Pharma Bro we are talking about. Worth a try anyway.

well, I can imagine the outrage from the far right regarding the issues with Trump… why? because places like Fox News aren’t talking about it.

So now the question is, why aren’t they talking about it?

I remember everything that took place during the Obama administration that saw the light of day…

Snowden and Manning
ethics of drone warfare
the withdrawal out of Iraq
the lack of withdrawal from Afghanistan
healthcare - ad infinitum
jobs
infrastructure
sequester

now much of this was hard stuff to discuss, but the news media demanded the discussions and the discussions were had….

Now we have the far right essentially ignoring the constitutional crisis that is ongoing and are essentially leaving it up to twitter, facebook and other news outlets describe what is taking place. It’s otherwordly… to simply disregard what is going on.

The rush to nationalism that the likes of Souza and Gorka desires is part of a wider trend of reactionary anti-modernism.

Here’s a take on the changes going on in Turkey:

How Erdogan’s Identity Project is Shaping Turkey’s Schools

[…]

WPR: What is the current state of Turkey’s education system, and are the problems it faces new or longstanding?

Dr. Lisel Hintz: At its most basic, Turkey’s education system, like many of its other institutions, is a mess. Part of this has to do with the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government’s response to the coup attempt that took place on July 15, 2016. The massive wave of purges that followed were ostensibly aimed at rooting out supporters of exiled Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen. But the purges also served as a vehicle for eliminating elements of Turkey’s opposition within the police, military, judiciary, civil service and other government branches, including education. In total, approximately 150,000 people have been fired from their jobs and 50,000 people have been arrested under a state of emergency that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has continued to renew as a way of justifying multiple decrees carrying the force of law. Like all other targeted institutions, Turkey’s education system, from the primary to the university level, suffers from gaping holes left behind by those fired—holes that are often filled based more on party loyalty than on professional merit.

[…]

Loyalty - that is the only qualification a tyrant desires in his underlings.

A little something about my new avatar.

The Arditi del Popolo (The People’s Daring Ones) was an Italian militant anti-fascist group founded at the end of June 1921 to resist the rise of Benito Mussolini’s National Fascist Party and the violence of the Blackshirts (squadristi) paramilitaries.[1] It grouped revolutionary trade-unionists, socialists, communists, anarchists, republicans, etc., as well as some former military officers, and was co-founded by Mingrino, Argo Secondari, Gino Lucetti - who tried to assassinate Mussolini on 11 September 1926 - the deputy Guido Picelli and others. The Arditi del Popolo were an offshoot of the Arditi elite troops, who had previously occupied Fiume in 1919 behind the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio, who proclaimed the Italian Regency of Carnaro. Those who split to form the Arditi del Popolo were close to the anarchist Argo Secondari and were supported by Mario Carli. The formazioni di difesa proletaria (Proletarian Defense Formations) later merged with them. The Arditi gathered approximately 20,000 members in summer 1921

Wow, he really is a mini-Trump.

From Lawhawk’s link:

The conviction, even as a mixed verdict, was a shattering defeat for the divisive Mr. Shkreli, who said before the trial that he was “so innocent” that the judge, jury and prosecutors would apologize to him afterward.

Of course, the year before, Trump also wanted Obama to play one of his golf courses (because of course he wanted the money/high profile visit).

Or maybe this one - that apparently refers to Obama’s first term trips/golf rounds:

Trump’s already halfway to Obama’s four year total in just 7 months or so.

He’s donating it and that will likely constitute a charitable deduction. Trump makes money from every trip to a Trump property because of the way they bill all those trips to the government. Trump tower is billing the USSS for space. Same at the Trump hotels, etc. and ultimately all that money flows back to Trump.

Each and every one of those constitutes an emoluments violation too.

Yup. And the only way he doesn’t gain any benefit from this is if he doesn’t add that as a charitable deduction when he itemizes his deductions.

Knowing all that we know about him and his business dealings, the odds he will leave a deduction or credit (deserved or not) on the table is somewhere between slim and none.

Basically, we’re reaching, or even surpass, the Godzilla threshold.

The divide between the NeverTrump Republicans who never waivered, and those Republicans who dived into Trump headfirst is interesting. When the first Dana Loesch NRA ad came out, a number of the former said things like, “What happened to her? She used to be sensible!”

I’ve thought the same of friends who seemed like actual principled Conservatives but who went nuts after Obama was elected.

And honestly I thought the same of friends on the left who went BernieBro, or even farther, like my idiot brother.

I’ve had to conclude that no, they WEREN’T sensible, even when they seemed like they were. They were ALWAYS this bad. It’s just that they hadn’t had either an excuse or an outlet for their madness.

A severe case of the Holier Than Thou’s. Or perhaps Bernier Than Thou. Soros is bad because he supports Democrats, not TRUE PROGRESSIVES!! You know he supported Hillary Clinton, who as we all know is Just As Bad As A Republican - if that Republican supported higher taxes on the wealthiest, regulation of business, a strong social safety net, universal healthcare, womens’ rights, minority rights, etc.etc.

Oh, and Kamal Harris? She’s supposedly tainted by having been a prosecutor, who threw people in jail (after they were found guilty).

Soros is just the new Rothschilds. A way of hitting the antisemitic dog whistle and riling up the racist base. It plays well to the modern left because they’ve conflated everything Jewish with their opposition to Israel and West Bank settlements in particular, as evidenced at this year’s Dyke March in Chicago where Jewish attendees were expelled for displaying Pride Flags with the Star of David on them.

Okay, the weather here the last few days must have been brought in from elsewhere.

Wednesday was a fairly typical warm Bay Area Summer day - 80s-90s down the Peninsula, fog moving in through the gaps in the late afternoon/early evening. Went to bed with the temps in the low 60s.

Thursday, woke up to high overcast, not the usual low marine layer. 70 degrees at 8 AM. HUMID, like >75% humidity. Still 70 degrees at 11 PM when I walked the dogs and humid enough that I was sweating.

Today, I awoke to the gentle patter of rain. RAIN? Rain. Still high overcast, all day, and humid again.

Some other place has our weather. I wonder how they like the afternoon winds.

So, will this be a year we will not be hearing of fires in the brush and trees of California? That would be a good thing.

Many people cannot conceive of people not having a god or gods, and NOT feeling something missing.

Not to shit on believers, but I cannot count the number of times I’ve been told by Believers trying to get me to believe in their particular Invisible Friend that they knew how I felt, that they, too once had that emptiness in their heart, but now it’s full!

I point out, gently or not as appropriate, that they don’t live in my head, and they don’t have any idea what I do or don’t feel. And no, I don’t feel an emptiness.

I totally will never begrudge people their beliefs. I just want people to afford me the same luxury.

re: #187 Teukka

Here was the paper in Nature Climate last week:

Less than 2 °C warming by 2100 unlikely

The recently published Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projections to 2100 give likely ranges of global temperature increase in four scenarios for population, economic growth and carbon use1. However, these projections are not based on a fully statistical approach. Here we use a country-specific version of Kaya’s identity to develop a statistically based probabilistic forecast of CO2 emissions and temperature change to 2100. Using data for 1960-2010, including the UN’s probabilistic population projections for all countries2, 3, 4, we develop a joint Bayesian hierarchical model for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and carbon intensity. We find that the 90% interval for cumulative CO2 emissions includes the IPCC’s two middle scenarios but not the extreme ones. The likely range of global temperature increase is 2.0-4.9 °C, with median 3.2 °C and a 5% (1%) chance that it will be less than 2 °C (1.5 °C). Population growth is not a major contributing factor. Our model is not a ‘business as usual’ scenario, but rather is based on data which already show the effect of emission mitigation policies. Achieving the goal of less than 1.5 °C warming will require carbon intensity to decline much faster than in the recent past.

The problem with predicting the future climate has little to do with physics and everything to do with the erratic decisions of humans.

We do not know if we’re going to head towards a war, an apocalyptic war, of our own making. Heck, Trump may have already sent us down such a path.

In reference to ” We find that the 90% interval for cumulative CO2 emissions includes the IPCC’s two middle scenarios but not the extreme ones” : I’ve sort of guessed that on my own some time ago. I thought for some time the RCP4.5 scenario would end up being closest to the truth, because I believe we only do a little bit of mitigation, not a great amount.

Resource constraints keep the worst-case scenarios from happening.

I take the dried ones and put them in full size into my slowly cooking pot of chili. After about an hour or so, they soften and then when they get to that stage I squeeze them with a spatula and the deep roasted brown goodness flows out into the sauce. Ummmmm. Nice and rich. Essentially one can predict with some confidence that people don’t change very much.

It takes a dramatic event - to change an individual, to change a society, quickly (by which I mean within a few years.)

So unless we do go into a global war of a magnitude of WWII (scaled up for population growth), it’s not unreasonable to expect economies to try and keep trudging along as they have.

Do people grow fruit trees anymore? Back when I was a kid in my northern part of Ohio, people all had at least one type of fruit tree in their yard.

We had great little peach trees and one apple tree. There were apple and cherry trees all up and down the street.

My father also fought the birds and neighborhood kids over his strawberry patch.

Had to run the kids away from the peaches too. Yard wasn’t fenced in. Those peaches were the bomb. Little dark red skinned and bright orange red fruit. Tough trees to grow though, very prone to frost.

Pie material galore. So yes, there were pies! My mom was a hell of a pastry, pie, cake and cookie master.

In a way, I’m a little glad to not have that much of that stuff around…I’d be 250 lbs. But growing up it was great.

We have an Asian Pear, Bartlett Pear, and Meyer Lemon trees. Our climate is marginal for all of them—some years we don’t get enough chill hours for pears, sooner or later a frost will kill the lemon. An actual lemon merengue pie, all from scratch, is not to be dismissed.

That video on the letter in Nature Climate was a bit misleading.

Just watching it and not reading the actual letter, you’d think that 2C was a likely estimate and achievable, even if 1.5C is not.

I guess they do this to try and not give out disheartening news. The idea is that you want to encourage people, not have them give up.

But the letter is pretty clear that the median in the distribution of estimated temps, at the end of the century, is 3.2C.

And that is a big difference.

At 3.2C above the pre-industrial levels, the average surface temperature will be quite a bit higher than in any of the inter-glacials of the past couple of millions of years, the Pleistocene.

And it gets worse. Unless you believe the universe ends in 2100, warming will continue beyond then.

Rarely do you see estimates given for the year 2200. I suppose the fear is that is so far away that people will just ignore it. And indeed, people do ignore it.

But the changes from the emissions of the 21st century will continue into the 22nd. And emissions will continue too, even at a greatly reduced flux (due almost certainly to resource limitations.)

The future is looking like it will be rather radically different than what we had in the recent past.

I don’t grow it in my yard, it is way too cold (I am north of you about an hour outside of Detroit). I got a sapling and have had it now for about four years. It’s beautiful now…not huge or anything. This year, it looked beautiful until like April…then we let it get just a tiny bit too dry and poof! no more leaves. It came back beautifully but we were very bummed. No lemons this year.

Oh yeah. Northern Ohio has some great peaches especially all up around Lake Erie and south of that maybe 80 miles. It all depends on not getting too late a frost though. if they prove that there was a conspiracy enacted upon the US elections with the assistance of foreign agents by financial, intelligence and political means, I really want these people arrested. If found to be guilty, well, I’m so mad I’m not sure that my better angels are on duty anymore…

In this case, the subversion of the political process should have repercussions, they’ve not only betrayed their country, they are ethically and morally bankrupt as people.

we already have obstruction of justice and perjury on the books, I’m at the point where we need to clean the GOP’s house for them.

America is resilient and complicated, besides we need more than one set of voices to run things

Massive peach growing regions are East and North of us. This tower in Clanton might have been the inspiration for the storyline in House of Cards. (It was in pink primer for about a year, and the kids couldn’t go by it without laughing.)

[Embedded content]

Well, you didn’t hear about Georgia Peaches for no reason.

The nice thing about growing fruits and veggies is each region has it’s own flavor depending on the type of plant/tree that grows in the region. The same types of plants will take on different flavors from south to north, east to west.

Colder harder winters give a different sugar content and consistency in the fruits flesh compared to southern.

But it’s all good!

as much as I hate Trump I really want all of these charges and innuendos to be wrong but I fear that they are not. I see Trump going down in history as being the only President being thrown in prison.

Sorry guys, been slammed with work so I wasn’t able to respond to anybody from the last post.

Repost from downstairs:

re: #281 ObserverArt

Hey! I missed seeing you around.

Cheers. I’ll try to be on here during the day, but since we moved our office to another building in north Dallas, the setup here has also changed. I’m right next to my boss so I don’t get to go on here and read the comments let alone respond to them because I don’t want the awkward situation of where I’m spending more time doing things other than work. It sucks, but it is what it is.

re: #400 Jebediah, RBG

Everything OK?

I guess they are with myself, but not with the world, of course.

When the Manchester terrorist attacks happened, I was on a flight from Detroit back to Dallas. When I found out that the bombing happened at a fucking Ariana Grande concert of all things through scrolling on FB, my heart stopped and I did not want to go on ANY site that would talk about that attack, because I was fearing the worst. I did not get on any social media platform, avoided the news, avoided websites that talk about politics (such as LGF unfortunately), avoided music sites that would report on the Manchester attack like FACT Magazine or Mixmag or Billboard, and did not even watch TV for a bit. When I arrived in Dallas, I had my ear buds on and made sure I didn’t look at ANY TV screens when I was coming back. I even told my friend who picked me up to not play any music because I didn’t want to hear about it. Since I was planning on staying off social media for Ramadan anyways, it was just a bit early, but I avoided all of those sites while fasting.

Was it a coward move? Perhaps so, but when something like that happens at a concert for a pop star that kids adore, I had no fucking idea how to react. And the fact that it happened in a city like Manchester, a city that I hold dear to since it was responsible for spawning some of the greatest bands of all time like New Order and The Stone Roses, I was at a loss of words and had trouble coming up with an appropriate reaction, even coming from me.

I’m still hesitant on finding out what transpired there exactly. All I know is that Da’esh took responsibility for the attack and accidentally stumbled upon a Telegram convo of those pricks cheering the attack.

Trouble is people like Trump don’t go to jail. He’ll get a pardon, with lots on hand wringing about healing the country.

I do console myself with the idea that he will have to live with the rejection, the biggliest and hugiest rejection the world has ever seen. Sure he’ll retain a few loyal fans/minions but it will rip his black shrivelled heart to shreds knowing the word Trump will come to mean useless and dishonest. Trumpian will replace Nixonian as a byword for corrupt.

For hot try the Peruvian Rocoto. Rocoto Relleno is a stuffed version from Arequipa. Not for the faint of heart though. Mild is 50,000 on the scoville scale, up to 250,000. If you ain’t crying when eating it, you ain’t trying. Cooking tames it a little, but numbness of the mouth soon sets in.

In the interests of transparency it is my single favorite food on the planet.

Yep. There will be no civil war just a bunch of people who want to move on out of embarrassment.

Trump will live out his life giving speeches in Eastern Europe shrieking his innocence and bilking the remainder of his loyal base.

He will go down in history as the biggest disgrace ever to occupy the White House until the effort, 40 years from now, to explain how he was right after all.

the thing is, I have a HS friend, incredibly devout… last week, he and some of the other members of his church were busy building houses for fellow Christians in Peru, with money that they raised for this kind of effort… that’s what I think of when I think of Christians… there are plenty of people of faith out there that are busy doing good deeds and living their lives in such a fashion that I believe would have found favor with how the New Testament was written. The thing is, they don;t wear their faith as some kind of badge of honor, they don’t proselytize, they simply do.. they give of themselves and their time because its what they believe is the best way to express their faith and show what it means to them..

the funny thing is, like Clinton voters, you rarely see them on twitter or the evening news….

Which efforts will probably work out about as well as the “alt” bio of James Buchanan I once read a review of. Synopsis: Old Buck was an unappreciated genius in keeping the country from devolving into civil war: except that Abe Lincoln came along and blew everything up.

I have a feeling that will look like brilliant scholarship compared to “Trump Revisionism” - which will probably start up the day after he’s tossed out of the WH, if not sooner.

As someone who has had that word in his vocabulary for more than 60 years, it is clear what the word was and what it meansmin that context - intense fact-checking. What she intended to accomplish by using it is a different story and I think it was to stir up a nontroversy and make us look illiterate.

seeing as how the first “fisking” as such occurred in 2001 or 2, how can you have been using it for 60 years?
