Scientists Fear Trump Gang Will Suppress New Disturbing Report on Effects of Climate Change

The anti-science right is in charge of the federal government
Politics • Views: 27,879

In 1990, Congress passed the Global Change Research Act, requiring the government to compile a report on the effects of climate change every four years. And it’s time for the next one.

The National Academy of Sciences has already approved the draft of the report, but in the age of the Trump Horror, the scientists who worked diligently to produce it are very concerned that it’s going to be suppressed or altered — with good reason, because Trump has filled these agencies with right wing climate change deniers.

And the conclusions of the new report are seriously disturbing: Government Report Finds Drastic Impact of Climate Change on U.S.

WASHINGTON — The average temperature in the United States has risen rapidly and drastically since 1980, and recent decades have been the warmest of the past 1,500 years, according to a sweeping federal climate change report awaiting approval by the Trump administration.

The draft report by scientists from 13 federal agencies, which has not yet been made public, concludes that Americans are feeling the effects of climate change right now. It directly contradicts claims by President Trump and members of his cabinet who say that the human contribution to climate change is uncertain, and the ability to predict the effects are limited.

“How much more the climate will change depends on future emissions and the sensitivity of the climate system to those emissions,” a draft of the report states. A copy of it was obtained by The New York Times.

This is one of the most awful things about the rise of the far right in US politics — they’re dominated by religious fanatics and anti-science cavemen.

I hope I’m wrong, but I have very little doubt that the Trump gang is going to try to shove this report under the rug, or demand changes to its conclusions. Fortunately, there are still good people in these agencies who are leaking reports like this to the New York Times and the Washington Post.

Ya think Wikileaks might leak these reports? It should be the kind of thing they would do, if they were an “independent journalism entity” and not the Mouth of Paurton

They’ll be nothing in any government report on climate that is not already known in the academic community and published in some form elsewhere.

Not that this should deter Wikileaks, should they want to prove they are more than Kremlin stooges.

If we want to talk climate, look at those photos from New Orleans.

It is folly to think that NO can be inhabitable in another century. A couple of feet of sea level rise and flooding will be the norm, not the exception. A few feet more and there will be no dry land.

I’m happy that the draft of this report has come out. I’m sure the final report will have stupid changes made to it for stupid reasons by blinkered ideologues in the tr*mp administration, and it will be good to have evidence of their tampering.

Of course, anyone who cares about evidence of this kind is most likely already voting anti-Republican.

This from the linked article is entertaining:

The subject of Google’s ideological bent came up at the most recent shareholder meeting, in June. A shareholder asked executives whether conservatives would feel welcome at the company. Executives disagreed with the idea that anyone wouldn’t.

“The company was founded under the principles of freedom of expression, diversity, inclusiveness and science-based thinking,” Alphabet Chairman Eric Schmidt said at the time. “You’ll also find that all of the other companies in our industry agree with us.”

So of course conservatives won’t fit in.

“…The DoJ lawyers point to an 1867 precedent that courts may not “enjoin the president in the performance of his official duties”, but CREW cites several examples to the contrary in more recent decades. And the brief observes that asking Mr Trump to divest himself of business interests does not—or should not!—have anything to do with his duties as president. If Mr Trump’s lawyers mean that taking “foreign and domestic governmental benefits does affect his executive decisions”, the brief says, “that is all the more reason to put an end to it”.

If we want to talk climate, look at those photos from New Orleans.

It is folly to think that NO can be inhabitable in another century. A couple of feet of sea level rise and flooding will be the norm, not the exception. A few feet more and there will be no dry land.

Has Harry Shearer chimed in about this or is he still whining about how evil Hillary is????

Good. Very mainstream primetime audience.

So I think I want to do an experiment in Anymouse’s small town.

I’ve often wished I had more resources to gift the town with a good number of subscriptions to at least one major newspaper with a national profile. I’m not certain if we’d see what each of us may think we would in response to empowering this access to information but damnet I want to try.

I’m very worried about a lot, as we all are. The media as institution and cultural landscape is such an important part of why we’ve continued to exist as a democracy and at the same time it’s dancing around and not honoring the moment and the resistance to a great attack on our democracy.

How are you not all in on an attack to your very existence? Hmmmm…we’ve faced arguments with Twitler voters that drill down the same way. This is surely fed by weaknesses in our collective history/institutions that were never addressed (no Confederate?). It’s complicated and I know this, but we have the conversations now, finally or we get swept up by a foreign power who is happy to exploit our needed reckoning so they can get cheaper oil. Many are happy to push the access to information as a strategy to backfire on us because of varied grievances here they exploit and cause they don’t effing have or appreciate it.

So I’m still thinking it all through but I’d love to gather a few funds to flood Anymouse’s town with varied media resources to see how it works out.

Thoughts y’all?

The easiest thing is to make sure the library has current subscriptions to a wide variety of decent publications, both domestically and English versions of foreign material, for a year, and see what happens.

For a few hundred NYT or WaPo subscriptions? That’s legit why it was appealing to me. I don’t have it obviously but that’s not a lot considering what were trying to get across and learn. Or maybe I am way off.

re: #127 JordanRules

For $125 each and every resident in Anymouse’s town would get an online subscription of The Washington Post for a month. From what I understand, Anymouse is the only person with internet in his town.

A daily New York Times paper delivery to every resident in Anymouse’s town would cost $29,250.

Maybe not, but it is a small town, and the publicity for such a gift might garner enough attention to make it worthwhile. Mrs. AM would certainly have an idea whether or not that would do any good. It is more affordable than to send a lot of newspapers and magazines around (although the USPS would sure love it!). Perhaps a majority of those might get thrown in the trash.

re: #133 teleskiguy

Thanks for the calculations TSG! I think a 30k experiment is worth it and that aligns with a digestible figure in my mind. Of course I don’t know how to get that. But what’s about to happen with Sinclair makes it worth exploring IMO.

re: #134 retired cynic

Good input! Maybe NYT isn’t the right gateway because of the reputation. There are other options that might not as quickly get chucked into the trash.

re: #135 JordanRules

A lot of people just don’t Read. I could distribute Newsweek to the homes in the little town near me, about the same size, and I’d bet over 3/4 of them would hit the trash. A lot of people aren’t comfortable reading. I’m not saying they can’t read, but they haven’t done much of it. And these are people I like, for the most part, and they are not stupid, by any means. A lot of things they can do much better than I can.

The easiest thing is to make sure the library has current subscriptions to a wide variety of decent publications, both domestically and English versions of foreign material, for a year, and see what happens.

I’d go this route, plus fund an internet connection, online subscriptions and at least three computers/tablets for the library. Ask Anymouse where folks linger to shoot the breeze and the bull — library? diner? town hall? Would be easier to get permissions and and might be more useful to provide a couple of newspapers and magazines for that location than to try to get subscriptions for individuals.

But talk to AM. He’ll know the town influencers and local hangouts.

re: #136 retired cynic

Yep I get that and I could be way off on any value derived for sure. And I said I’m not sure what we’d find. Previously I’ve been very clear about folks in his town actively choosing their foul ideaology and proximity to anything that challenges it. Decency is decency.
Still, if could do it right now though, I would try. Shit, I’m about trying right now. Maybe we can start to erase imaginary enemies.

So flooding of resources could mean more than reading material maybe.

Internet is a two-edged sword — lets people find the echo chambers as well as the broader viewpoints. But maybe the library can filter some of the worst cesspools with a net-nanny tool, and justify it by protecting the teenagers. (if there are any teenagers). Mrs. AM may have some helpful observations.

re: #140 CleverToad

No doubt! I’d feel silly not “allowing” the full internet even though I know they enter it with an extreme bias that puts me at risk over the long haul.

And I’m not a free speech absolutist, but I think I’m struggling in that space.

I’m sorry, my Internet service went out (again).

It might be more economical to send one copy to the Public Library of the New York Times and the Washington Post.

For just a single subscription of each, I will look into the prices and see if I can simply afford to do that myself.

Our state laws require net-nanny tools; as such our library has had such a system for a few years.

The net nanny server can be overridden by my wife or the assistant librarian, but requires a request at the circulation desk. (That ensures minors don’t have access to particular sites without permission.)

In a sense Katrina helped, it showed everyone exactly how bad things were, in time to do something about it.

Can I just point out… significant portions of the Netherlands are below sea level. If you care enough to build proper sea walls, this is doable.
