Even if they got lucky and smoked NK before Kim Jong Un could retaliate they’d still fuck up a good portion of Asia and set a bunch of dominoes falling that would seriously mess shit up in many countries around the world.

There is no safe play here except NOT hitting the red button.

The Trump nuclear meltdown has certainly revealed a lot of misconceptions about nuclear weapons, from their real effects to the President’s authority to use them.

It has also been an opportunity to educate people.
The increasingly popular Nukemap simulation is a great tool for this, if a bit grim.

I devoutly hope Trump can be reined in somehow before the lessons get to the level of practical experience.

Nuke map is good for immediate effects but is weak about longer range fallout and prevailing winds. That’s what will be much more likely to kill me as I sit due east from Minot. It would be good to have as equally easy to use tool for fallout prediction but they aren’t any better at it now than when the F/V Lucky Dragon 5 got fried in 1954.

Oh no—the DNC insulted Nina and her revolution with water and donuts. What horrible, horrible people…

“They tried to seduce us with donuts and water,” she said. “They’re pompous and arrogant enough to say to the people, you’re not good enough to be on our property — and, oh by the way, we’re just gonna hand you donuts and water over the barricade. That is insulting. Absolutely insulting.”

She is such a twit. Oh, and Nina, here’s a dollar—buy a fucking clue…

Turner said, the incident remains unresolved: DNC chair Tom Perez “would be wise” to call her to apologize, she said, quickly recalling his weakness with progressives in the tight chair’s race earlier this year against Ellison, now serving as DNC deputy chair. “Chairman Perez won, but the energy was behind Congressman Keith Ellison,” said Turner.

Yeah—energy—that’s the ticket—votes, uhhhh.

My mother worked as office manager to a small company that produced testing materials. Among them were tests that were designed to test cognitive ability in people of other languages, even primitive people. They were designed using shapes and drawings. I started work there, gathering and stapling tests and instructions together at a penny a staple, back about 1960. Ended up working with their first computer, an IBM 1130 (1120? forget), and worked my way through college that way.

The Mensa Society requires an IQ in the top 2%. This means that well over 6 million Americans are eligible to join. About 57,000 actually belong, less than 1% of those eligible.

Intelligence, as expressed as an IQ score, is the relative ability to solve problems.

Knowledge is what many people today call alternative intelligences. (See also alternative medicine.)

The issue is not whether you can work your way around a library or the frontier, it is how fast you can learn to do that.

Five unnamed military members have sued Donald Trump over his three-tweet transgender ban. (I can’t even imagine I have to type three-tweet ban.)

The claim is that they relied on the DOD policy toward transgender military members, and Trump’s tweets to end that would be unconstitutional. They seek an injunction against such a ban should it come. (The White House has issued no formal guidance to the Department of Defense.)

I’m not sure that military members can sue the President; at least from my understanding of the chain-of-command that is not permissible. (The idea of being able to sue superiors over orders would cause the breakdown of the chain-of-command.) I suppose that would depend on whether a court saw this as a constitutional question or no.

At least you had a choice. I was yanked out of fifth grade from my walk-to-the-neighborhood school in November and transferred to Fairfax Counties’ “enriched” program at a school 15 miles away (driven and picked up by my mom, every day). Good news: I was with other kids who were bored to tears sitting in the classroom. Bad news: I was known as “enrichee” by the kids in the neighborhood.

The rest of fifth, sixth, and seventh grade were spent in the program. Then my dad, who was first at HQMC and then sent to Chu Lai came back from the war and we were stationed in Marietta, Ga. for two years. He was posted to the Pentagon afterwards and we moved back into the house in Annandale for my last two years of high school.

Paul Manafort Spends Afternoon Making House Look Presentable for Next FBI Raid (goes to The Onion)

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Embarrassed by the piles of clutter in virtually every room, former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort reportedly spent the afternoon Wednesday making his house look presentable before the next predawn FBI raid. “The next time the FBI shows up at my door without advance warning, this place is going to be spick and span,” said Manafort, who fluffed couch cushions, folded a basket of freshly washed laundry, and then went room to room to empty waste baskets, noting that the house was so messy that the agents searching for incriminating documents must have thought he was a total slob. “It was humiliating standing there and watching them rifling through my desk drawers, which were just crammed with loose papers and unopened junk mail. Then I almost died when they were rummaging around under the couch and discovered the missing television remote, pieces of popcorn, and these huge clumps of dog hair—at that moment, with all those FBI officers crawling around, I wished more than anything that I had vacuumed.” At press time, an extremely anxious Manafort was hoping the FBI agents that had just entered his home wouldn’t notice he had forgotten to dust around the bookshelf.

My schools did not have things such as gifted programmes. My wife (who went to school in St. Louis) did.

When we were in Germany in 2015, our group toured a gifted school run by the government, which provided education tracked to the particular skills of the student. The headmistress of the school noted that there was considerable resistance when the school started some twenty years ago, but is now broadly supported by the community. Graduates from that school have entered into all sorts of technology, engineering, or science jobs.

Germany views such schools as a way to compete with other nations to advance their economy.

Our esteemed host Mr. Johnson has a tweet quoted in a Raw Story article.

Anthony Scaramucci made an indirect reference comparing himself to Monica Lewinsky.

As Mr. Johnson alluded in his response, Mr. Scaramucci may not have thought out exactly what that meant.

“Ryan Lizza is the Linda Tripp of 2017. People know,” Scaramucci claimed. “And he is up at night not being able to live with himself.”

The Internet on Wednesday exploded after Scaramucci likened Lizza to Tripp, noting in that analogy, the ex-communications director was comparing himself with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Russian Surveillance Plane Soars Over the Pentagon, Capitol, and Other Washington Sights (goes to the Washington Post), more at the link:

A Russian surveillance plane soared through secure airspace over Washington on Wednesday, presumably collecting intelligence as it traveled near the Pentagon, the Capitol and other government buildings, two U.S. officials said.

The Russian Air Force Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft made the flight through the Treaty on Open Skies, which Russia, the United States and 32 other nations have signed. The treaty established criteria under which countries can make unarmed observation flights over the soil of other treaty members in an effort to promote transparency and international arms control efforts, according to the State Department.

The Capitol Police issued an alert Wednesday that warned that an “authorized low-altitude aircraft” would enter restricted airspace between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The alert did not state who owned the plane, but said it “will be large and may fly directly over the U.S. Capitol.”

But good lord, can you imagine turning on the news (or checking in here at LGF) and seeing it reported that the FBI raided Trump Tower?

Holy shit - it would dominate the news for at least a couple of days. Trump’s spokesghouls would be going into full-on, unhinged meltdowns on all the talking head shows.

Trump would break Twitter if that happened. Either that, or his cellphone would catch on fire from the nonstop tweet barrage.

Well, all of Trump Tower is likely not of interest to the FBI, just the parts the Trump family inhabits.

That said, what would happen regarding the Secret Service trailer outside the tower on the sidewalk? Would they resist the FBI, or would they help?

I can’t imagine the Secret Service interfering if the FBI shows up with a warrant. They’d stand aside and let law enforcement get on with the job.

They would indeed. There’s not much that the SS could do if FBI agents show up with a valid warrant. Maybe shadow them to ensure that they’re not digging anywhere other than where the warrant specifies, but it’s not like they’re paid to keep Trump’s secrets.

Off-topic: I am growing in my beard whilst waiting for the call-back from the Coen Brothers’ production company on whether I get in as an extra in their mini-series.

I looked at the beard closely in a mirror today. To me, it seems to make me look haggard and ten years older (particularly with the white and grey whiskers in it, though I don’t have any of that in my hair).

My wife thinks it looks great. (She thinks all beards look great, except possibly douchebro goatees.)

This leaves me in a quandary, as I would never tell my wife how to fix her hair or such. As soon as the filming is over (or sooner if they don’t pick me), I intended to go to a barber and have this concertina wire cut off my face. But she likes it… .

From a former NH senator today:

Dear Rep. Kuster: President Trump’s threat to rain down “fire and fury” on North Korea is like pouring gasoline on a fire. It’s crazy.

Donald Trump is impaired by a seriously sick psyche. His sick mind and reckless conduct could consume the lives of millions. The threat of nuclear war is steeply on the rise.

You must not take comfort in the system of checks and balances. The president alone has the authority to launch nuclear weapons, the only restraint being the advice of senior advisers who might be present at the time of crisis, and Donald Trump has shown repeated contempt for informed and wise counsel. He is sick of mind, impetuous, arrogant, belligerent and dangerous.

Donald Trump should be relieved of the powers of the presidency at the earliest date.

I urge you to support HR 1987, the Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity Act, which, would establish a commission to determine whether the president is mentally fit. I have asked Rep. Shea-Porter to do the same and have asked Sens. Shaheen and Hassan to lead an effort in the Senate.

HR 1987 is consistent with the intent and the wording of the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Either the Cabinet or a body created by Congress, may find the president unfit for reasons of health, whereupon his powers are transferred to the vice president.

Serious crises are bearing down on us.

We cannot leave our national security and our families’ safety in the hands of a president whose poor judgment, belligerence, vindictiveness and reckless impetuosity constitute an indictment of his mental health.

Donald Trump is seriously sick. He is dangerous. As a citizen, a former U.S. senator and 12-year member of the Armed Services Committee, I urge you to act once. This is an emergency.

Regards,

GORDON HUMPHREY

re: #107 Barefoot Grin

One of my students yesterday commented that there’s something seriously wrong with Trump - he’s completely abnormal and it’s extraordinarily dangerous that such a man should have access to WMD’s.

As she noted, it’s quite fine for him to be the President of a small, benign and relatively boring country, like say, Moldova - that’s all well and good, as he can do little harm in the international arena. But certainly not POTUS. That could pose a genuine existential danger to everybody.

today’s thought / question:

When you wake up and start your internet day, after email and social media (obligatory cat pix or whatever), do you have a regular routine? For me it’s this, in order:

Electoral-vote.com The votemaster (and zenger) used to go mostly quiet between elections - there wasn’t much to do. I bet they must not be happy waking up every freakin morning saying “now what the hell happened last night, will I ever get a vacation?” They are not usually first / breaking. I have always found their analysis to be cogent, very objective and sober. They create a fair perspective.

Next is Political Wire.com So I know “What’s Going On” I check back periodically throughout the day.

Then here to LGF, for, well, you know.

For the rest of the time, between work and everything else, i rotate through the Usual Suspects or go wherever links lead me.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump was again up early this morning railing about McConnell. What’s Trump going on about? Doesn’t he have a tee time to get to? You know, a morning round and then an afternoon round, followed by visiting the catering hall to see if there are any brides or bridesmaids to check out?

Seriously, Trump’s know-nothing advisers are continuing to screw the entire nation because Trump himself is a know-nothing who refuses to take advice from anyone who doesn’t tell him what he wants to hear. Trump needs positive reinforcement (hence the stories claiming that he needs to get affirmation messages regularly from staff).

He’s a needy, greedy, racist asshat who is running the country headlong into a war no one wants, all because his oversized ego can’t handle the fact that he’s a failure at everything he’s done in the WH. The ability to nominate a right winger to the Supreme Court when the GOP controls the Senate isn’t hard especially when he was selected for you Trump.

Everything else? No budget. No policy of your own that is more than empty platitudes and talking points.

Trumpcare was what Ryan and then McConnell cobbled together despite having years to get something better (or so they keep claiming - it was never about being better than Obamacare, it was always about gutting Obama’s landmark achievement and gutting the safety net to deliver massive tax breaks to the rich). Trump railed on the campaign trail that he had a better way too, and yet there’s no sign of any policy there either.

No one should expect any policy from Trump and his cronies. They’re too busy breaking stuff in the federal government to care about creating policy. Creating policy is hard. Breaking functioning government is easy: nominate and appoint incompetent, ignorant, and malicious regressive know-nothings to all the key positions.

Or better yet, leave 100s of positions unfilled, because who knows when you’ll need an Ambassador to South Korea or to Japan or France or that the Defense Department still has unfilled key positions.

Trump, and his idiot supporters who rail about the Deep State, ignore that the leaks are coming from the White House itself by people who are tied to Trump and are intent on saving their own power by throwing others under the bus.

That might be how Trump runs his businesses into the ground, but that’s not how you should run the federal government.

The most important graf to keep in mind when dealing with Trump and his cabal of cronies:

Why would he want to provoke people?

Federal grand jury investigations can be like a Game of Thrones plotline. To finish you, federal prosecutors don’t necessarily have to prove that you already committed a crime — they can simply play upon your human flaws and get you to finish yourself. High-profile defendants are routinely taken down not based on the initial crime they committed, but by their reckless response to the investigation — they’re ended not by the crime, but by the ineffectual coverup. Mueller knows what he’s doing, knows that he’s dealing with unusually volatile personalities particularly unsuited to patient inaction, and is probably counting on people to react foolishly, self-destructively, and criminally to startling events like a search warrant.

Mueller is an expert. He’s a professional. He knows what he’s doing and has surrounded himself with other professionals who are experts in their respective fields of criminal justice. Trump and his cronies are anything but experts at anything. They’re reactionary and impatient. They’re notoriously incapable of being disciplined.

Mueller knows all this, and will be acting accordingly. It’s as though he’s using the warrant to flush out game (consider the Trump admin as a flock of geese or ducks in a pond waiting to get lined up and shot down).

I’m not. No one is saying that Mueller is the good guy or that what we end up with is any better (Pence). Frankly, any investigation into the admin has to look at Pence and his involvement at every step too - what he knew and when he knew it, particularly in relation to Flynn, Manafort, Page, and Kushner and their lies/omissions about their contacts with the Russians and foreign agent status.

If he didn’t know, but should have, that’s an omission that goes to his inability to ask the right questions. Or a failure to do due diligence.

If he knew, then he’s complicit in the coverup of the ongoing scandal - covering up contacts with the Russians that he knew or had reason to know were illicit.

Is that response like a “even if it were a BS warrant, I’d be cool with it” kinda thing? I haven’t seen anything to suggest abuse of the process. That’s what made this Manafort wakeup call so relevant for me. Not only is it a great tool overall as Lawhawk suggested but it’s likely only able to be used if it’s deemed very necessary, so it’s a twofer.

I’ll go back and see if I can lift the comment entire.

Guess we know what Trump will be tweeting later today. A judge agreed that the State Dept hasn’t done enough to search for emails relating to Benghazi among Clinton and key officials at State Dept.

They’re still going on about this, despite zero evidence of a coverup or any malfeasance.

It’s just more chaff for Trump to throw out there while his own criminality is being investigated by: FBI, Mueller, House committee, and Senate committee. Oh, and apparently the NY AG’s office.

I have fully expected Trump and the RepubliKKKlans to indict Hillary over Benghazi, the e-mails or Bill talking to Lynch. RIght now I look at the Facebook pages of several of my brainwashed relatives and they are having a collevtive orgasm over this.

Like the rest of the Republican base their hatred of the Clintons TRUMPS everything else. They won’t rest until the entire Clinton family has been jailed.

Damn, I still remember family members cheering when Bill’s dog Buddy died.

Belafon  Aug 10, 2017 • 6:27:55am

From the guy who was forced out of the Air Force for asking, in 1973, if there was a way to verify that the president was sane:

Like any good student with a sensitive question, Harold Hering approached his teacher after class, out of earshot from his classmates.

“How can I know,” he asked, “that an order I receive to launch my missiles came from a sane president?”

It was 1973. President Richard M. Nixon was seriously depressed about Watergate. Hering, an Air Force major who rescued downed pilots in Vietnam, was training to be a missileer — the guy who turns the keys to commence nuclear Armageddon.

“I assumed there had to be some sort of checks and balances so that one man couldn’t just on a whim order the launch of nuclear weapons,” Hering, now 81, told Radiolab in a remarkable interview earlier this year.

Hering was wrong. And decades later, so is anyone who thinks President Trump, having recently threatened “fire and fury” for North Korea, can’t order a nuclear attack anytime he darn well pleases, even from a fairway bunker on the golf course.

Just ask Hering.

Back in 1973, the drama that followed Hering’s question did not, as he hoped, fundamentally alter the fate of the world, but it certainly reshaped his life. Forced to retire, Hering took up a career with a less dangerous set of keys: long-haul trucking…

All these years later, Hering does not regret asking the forbidden question. After driving trucks, he became an addiction counselor to homeless people at the Salvation Army. He lives in Indiana. He still worries.

“It bothers me immensely that the only area there is not a check and balance is the one that could literally result in the end of the world,” he told Radiolab. “That seems strange to me.”…

That also addresses another question the other night—whether the military personnel up and down the chain might act “normal” and not advance the attack. Hering’s forced removal illustrates that these people are selected, trained, tested, and retained precisely because they will not act “normal”.

The process is the PRP. Unfortunate oversight—Trump doesn’t have to be in it.

I wish I could say “this isn’t normal”, but this is precisely what ‘normal’ would have been had the segregationists suspended elections, should they have realised they would soon lose control of Congress, before the Civil Rights or Voting Rights acts were proposed.

The sad part is, we had Russia’s and Germany’s descents from free elections to authoritarianism to look at.

And that Trump may be even more dangerous than Putin. Nominations for “Righteous Among the Nations” were supposed to be closed forever, but I’m pretty sure that if the fascists don’t rule the entire world after this is all over, there’ll be people who need to be added to that list.

This is…interesting:

As Joseph Bottum wrote in “An Anxious Age,” mainline Protestants created a kind of unifying culture that bound people of different political views. You could be Catholic, Jewish, Muslim or atheist, but still you were influenced by certain mainline ideas — the Protestant work ethic, the WASP definition of a gentleman. Leaders from Theodore Roosevelt to Barack Obama hewed to a similar mainline standard for what is decent in public life and what is beyond the pale.

It says something that seven months after his departure from the presidential stage, a codgy scold like Brooks has essentially assigned Obama to a place in the national pantheon. After years of his party’s birtherism and all-around hysterical Obama-is-a-Gay-Muslim-Brotherhood attacks, Brooks is starting to recognize the depths to which we have sunk since January (or November or June 2015).

ObserverArt  Aug 10, 2017 • 8:32:35am

All the talk of Nuke bombs and Hiroshima got me to thinking about some local Columbus Ohio history that tied in.

Paul Tibbets, the pilot of Enola Gay the plane that delivered the first bomb on Japan was a Columbus resident. After he retired from the Air Force he moved to Columbus to become part of Executive Jet Aviation, later to become NetJets. He was president of the company until he retired.

I came across this in his Wiki page and did not know of it prior, though I remember all the coverage of his death in the local media. It’s kind of sad and yet it shows the dichotomy of what dropping the first nuke bomb did to his life.

Tibbets died in his Columbus, Ohio, home on 1 November 2007, at the age of 92.[55][83] He had suffered small strokes and heart failure during his final years and had been in hospice care.[8][84] He was survived by his French-born wife, Andrea,[80] and two sons from his first marriage, Paul III and Gene as well as his son, James, from his second marriage.[8][84] Tibbets had asked for no funeral nor headstone as he feared opponents of the bombing might use it as a place of protest. In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated,[85] and his ashes were scattered over the English Channel,[86] which he had flown over many times during the war.[84]

Link to his Wiki page for anyone that might not be familiar with him.

yeah, ive said this a time or two the last few days. i am settling in with the idea that post election, it is congress, as a unified, constitutional body, is 100% to blame for every new outrageous thing that happens every freakin day

yes, congress is craven, self centered, focused on their own power and agenda and all that.

meanwhile they have totally abdicated their constitutional responsibilities, and their -thrust upon them- ability to be the adult in the room.

they’re not doing anything, to check, balance, impede, direct, steer, rein in, return to normalcy, a 3 year old who got the keys to the car, managed to get the door unlocked, open, sat down, adjusted the seat, insert the key, get it started, put it in gear, and on and on

they are delegitimizing their own existence by doing…..nothing as step by step, inch by inch…

how much how far?

I found Seattle’s weather: It’s hiding here in the DFW area. I just drove through 25 miles of fog, some of it so thick visibility was less than 200 feet. And it didn’t end at either end of my drive.

Summer has gone on holiday in Germany, 60° degrees and rainy all day, might clear up a bit but temps will be down into the 50’s…

I can’t find it and my google fu is failing me.

re: #224 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I have been searching for a cartoon that shows a cleaning woman with a humbly lowered head knocking on the door of an English professor and saying “It is I”.

This is totally driving me nuts. One of my “catch phrases” is…Who’s a good boy? immediately followed by “I AM?!”

It doesn’t take much to drive me nuts.

Sir John Barron  Aug 10, 2017 • 9:21:40am

Saw Dunkirk last night.

It was well-done but in a sense, a narrowly-told story: for example, there was nothing about the German approach and its ultimate delay that greatly enabled the rescue. There wasn’t any portrayal—except at the end—of Churchill or the nation’s political leadership.

But the story itself is quite a bit itself anyway without much of the context. The story is told through three parallel time shots involving 3-5 sub-plots. One subplot involves one of the small boats and its crew that embarks on its rescue mission across the channel. A second subplot involves the soldiers on the beach; a third centers around an RAF pilot (the Tom Hardy character) sent to fight off the Luftwaffe and protect the ships seeking to get the soldiers home. These three main plots are gradually brought together by the end of the film, partly through the usage of other characters and situations.

In the late 80’s I had an insurance policy that cost me $60 per month - with a $5,000 deductible. It was not really health insurance, it was just bankruptcy insurance in case I got hit by a truck or the like.

Pretty soon now, none of these assholes are going to even know which side they’re on.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich criticized President Trump on Thursday for lashing out against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Gingrich, an outspoken supporter of the President, said both Trump and Senate Republicans are responsible for failing to fulfill campaign promises of repealing Obamacare, calling it a “collective failure.”

“The fact is, with a very narrow margin, 52 people, Mitch McConnell got 49 out of 52. I think the President can’t disassociate himself from this. He is part of the leadership team,” Gingrich said, appearing on “Fox and Friends.” “He is not an observer sitting in the stands. He is on the field. It was a collective failure.”

And here’s the basic difference between men’s and women’s health care needs; something that conservative men (especially conservative men of a Certain Age) don’t seem to want to understand.

Most guys, can very easily go from adolescence well into middle age without ever needing a doctor. Ever.

Women, not the case.

If we want to get pregnant. If we want to not get pregnant. If we’re not even sexually active at all — somewhere around 80% of us get UTI’s, yeast infections, endometriosis, heavy cramping, etc. We ALL need a doctor. Anybody who questions this assertion, who tries to make it an argument about “sluts”… the mother superior at your favorite convent will confirm that ALL WOMEN NEED DOCTORS.

Driftglass will not be happy BoBo is quitting.

He’s already got an article up about it.

You see, future historians, it’s not that there was no evil in our politics. There was. There was also depravity. And cravenness. And cowardice. And racism. And misogyny. And greed. It got very bad and it nearly broke us, because for many, many years, one side of the American political spectrum — the Conservative side — was allowed to get away with actively cultivating and rewarding paranoia and rage and racism and contempt for facts because it won them votes and it was good for ratings.

But of all of those who profited personally, politically and professionally from debasing our media and corroding our politics, the worst of them were those who knew better. Those like Mr. David Brooks, who made a whole career out of building a monster, and then frantically scuttled away and blamed everyone but themselves when the monster they made kicked the laboratory door off its hinges and then ran amok, nearly destroying the country.

And of this writing, the David Brooks’ of our world are once again doing what they did after the Fall of Bush: washing their hands (and heads) of any responsibility for the ruin they helped to create —

Fair enough but there is a vacuum in our society that Donald Trump is exposing (and not filling as he points out). That vacuum was not created by Brooks and his ilk but propped up by him and others like him.

I see it like our society was like a sandcastle on the beach. The high tide of cultural changes came in and washed it away. Brooks et al fought against moving it further inland. Trump is trying to build a wall around it.

I think one reason the Republicans sort of got away with using the premiums rising under Obamacare as a scare tactic was most Americans get insurance through employers and never really looked at the costs. I guess they never understood why their co-pays and deductibles kept going up and up and their coverage (they never looked at) kept getting less and less.

But Obama, the scary man came and suddenly they paid attention to the details and now it was a problem. It left an imprint that insurance bad because Obama, when it was a mess before.

Our ‘furanda’, attached to the bedroom window, has hog wire and heavy-duty nylon screening that works even when there’s a loose cat out there. The Manx likes to ‘sharpen’ his teeth on the hog wire when it’s time to intimidate.

That breed seems to carry a deep cat aggression trait. Afraid to see if that’s dogs and possums and rats and… That cat stays in if possible. Sweet with people tho.

re: #286 ObserverArt

Righteous Rant!!!

GOP lies from before implementation of ACA until now, ignoring that costs were rising by double digits before ACA but slowed after ACA implemented (and current spike in premiums is entirely due to Trump sabotaging CSRs).

GOP lies also deflect attention from their own actions - like refusing to expand Medicaid, which would further stabilize costs.

The ACA expanded transparency to the system, so we know more about health costs than before - and the GOP is exploiting what we now know of health costs as a claim that it is broken and that ACA is to blame.

None of these lies are sustainable and are disproven, but they take more time.

So what we get is Trump promising during the campaign that he’d come up with a better plan than Obamacare that covers more and costs less, and then never does anything beyond the empty platitude. Congressional GOPers who had years to propose a plan are all like - where’s my vaporware/malware dude?! And lo and behold, the GOP produces crap sandwiches and shit on a stick and calls it Trumpcare v.x… It’s all the same nonsensical ravings from lunatics who don’t understand how the concept of insurance works.

They think that healthy people shouldn’t be subsidizing costs for everyone else, when that’s how all insurance works. It’s predicated on having a large enough pool of people to cover costs for payouts - whether it’s life insurance, car insurance, renter’s insurance, home insurance, or health insurance.

Every single GOPer from Ryan and McConnell on down either ignore how insurance works, or they don’t know (and don’t care).

It’s all so much bullshit that even Bullshit Mountain needs another mountain of bullshit to handle the flow.

North Korea called Trump “senile” and “bereft of reason”.

North Korea has accused Donald Trump of acting “senile” while he takes a working vacation “on the golf links.”

General Kim Rak-gyom, commander of the North’s strategic rocket forces, insulted the US President in response to his threat to unleash “fire and fury like the world has never seen” against the reclusive state.

In comments made via state media, Mr Kim said Mr Trump was “extremely getting on the nerves” of his soldiers by making comments showing his “senility” again.

He said “sound dialogue is not possible with such a guy bereft of reason who is going senile.”

I don’t know about anyone else here, but it makes me a little uncomfortable when I find myself in agreement with the DPRK.

I read most of it. Brooks may well be correct.

That said - go back and read what Brooks was writing before Trump was elected. He was cheerleading and covering for Trump and pushing the anti-Clinton narrative that helped to damage her campaign.

And now that the guy that he cheered for and propped up and helped get elected has turned out to be the complete fuckup everyone here knew he was going to be, he wants to walk away, just like that?

No. Just fucking no. He helped bring all this about. He gets no excuse note. Nope.

Brooks did the exact same pattern in relation to W Bush. Brooks was the biggest W cheerleader on the planet, until the accumulated weight of W’s disasters couldn’t be ignored. After that, Brooks shamelessly turned both-siderist.

I think this GOP dysfunction applies to more than health care. It applies to everything. They don’t even have a plan for tax cuts, which is like the grand inquisitor showing up for a witch burning without a sermon to justify the murder.

There used to be a pipeline where stupid conservative ideas would get polished into some semblance of plausibility in their think tanks, and then when they got into power they’d march forward with that irritating inevitability of the W Bush years.

Republicans Blame Election Losses On Democrats

WASHINGTON, DC—Republican officials are blaming tonight’s GOP losses on Democrats, who they claim have engaged in a wide variety of “aggressive, premeditated, anti-Republican campaigns” over the past six-to-18 months. “We have evidence of a well-organized, well-funded series of operations designed specifically to undermine our message, depict our past performance in a negative light, and drive Republicans out of office,” said Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman, who accused an organization called the Democratic National Committee of spearheading the nationwide effort. “There are reports of television spots, print ads, even volunteers going door-to-door encouraging citizens to vote against us.” Acknowledging that the “damage has already been done,” Mehlman is seeking a promise from Democrats to never again engage in similar practices.

So I caught a bit of Louise Mensch’s schtick on twitter earlier today. She was busy tweeting about the line of succession, and mysteriously jumped from Orrin Hatch to Mattis.

After Trump, you’ve got Pence and then Ryan. From there:

3 President pro tempore of the Senate Orrin Hatch (R)
4 Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (R)
5 Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin (R)
6 Secretary of Defense James Mattis (I)
7 Attorney General Jeff Sessions (R)
8 Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke (R)
9 Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue (R)
10 Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross (R)
11 Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta (R)
12 Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price (R)
13 Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson (R)

This is well understood and yet she gets basic info wrong. Yet, we’re going to believe that she’s got the dirt on the indictments, or the process of how the federal courts and the federal investigations are proceeding and what they’re acting upon, whereas Preet Bharara doesn’t?

Yeech. I need a shower.

Maybe the assumption is that Tillerson and Mnuchin would some how be wrapped up in the imaginary GOP RICO indictment? But your list is correct, the level of ignorance is rather amazing.

If we ever end up in a situation where we are possibly looking the presidency being filled by the Speaker of the House, let alone the President Pro Tem of the Senate, we are going to be staring at a constitutional crisis that would make a collaboration between Aaron Sorkin and Vince Flynn seem tame in comparison.

this is actually multi sided

- he doesnt understand trade deficits per se

- and he still cant get through his thick skull that foreign relations are not transactional

I have a feeling Donny would have been one of those people that on their first acid trip would think of things in such a different manner than his usual thoughts of greed and control. His past might also enter into it and it would all have caused him to lose his shit big time and end up crying like a baby.

Holy crap. Those are bloody expensive. #14 welding glasses (which are quite sufficient) are only five dollars. They will also work over the lens/light sensor of a camera.

You got me poking around and found these:
amazon.com

I just mapped out on graph paper that I can cut this up to cover the three sets of binoculars I have around the house.

Our family of 5 is dashing up to Wyoming from Denver area to see how close we can get to totality. Hacking my binoculars with your inspiration is a nice upgrade over the cheap eclipse glasses we already have. Thanks!

tr*mp stupidly poured gasoline on a fire, and this is the result. North Korea has pretty much locked itself into firing missiles supposedly intended to land near Guam but not on it.

Just about any US administration would view this as sufficient provocation for a major strike on North Korea. A competent US administration would have a reasonable chance of preventing this from escalating into all-out war with China.

With the bozos we actually have in charge, escalation to Chinese involvement seems certain.

[Diplomats] also believe Trump’s foreign policy is chiefly driven by an obsession with unravelling Barack Obama’s policies. “It’s his only real position,” one European diplomat said. “He will ask: ‘Did Obama approve this?’ And if the answer is affirmative, he will say: ‘We don’t.’ He won’t even want to listen to the arguments or have a debate. He is obsessed with Obama.”

Summer has gone on holiday in Germany, 60° degrees and rainy all day, might clear up a bit but temps will be down into the 50’s…

Similar situation here in Colorado where temps have topped in the high 70s for long enough I was hoping it was an early autumn.

No such luck, unfortunately, and we’re headed back above 90 beginning next Tuesday…
