It has also been an opportunity to educate people.
The increasingly popular Nukemap simulation is a great tool for this, if a bit grim.
I devoutly hope Trump can be reined in somehow before the lessons get to the level of practical experience.

Nuke map is good for immediate effects but is weak about longer range fallout and prevailing winds. That’s what will be much more likely to kill me as I sit due east from Minot. My mother worked as office manager to a small company that produced testing materials. Among them were tests that were designed to test cognitive ability in people of other languages, even primitive people. They were designed using shapes and drawings. I started work there, gathering and stapling tests and instructions together at a penny a staple, back about 1960. Ended up working with their first computer, an IBM 1130 (1120? forget), and worked my way through college that way.

Knowledge is what many people today call alternative intelligences. (See also alternative medicine.)

The claim is that they relied on the DOD policy toward transgender military members, and Trump’s tweets to end that would be unconstitutional. They seek an injunction against such a ban should it come. (The White House has issued no formal guidance to the Department of Defense.)
I’m not sure that military members can sue the President; at least from my understanding of the chain-of-command that is not permissible. (The idea of being able to sue superiors over orders would cause the breakdown of the chain-of-command.) I suppose that would depend on whether a court saw this as a constitutional question or no.

At least you had a choice. I was yanked out of fifth grade from my walk-to-the-neighborhood school in November and transferred to Fairfax Counties’ “enriched” program at a school 15 miles away (driven and picked up by my mom, every day). Good news: I was with other kids who were bored to tears sitting in the classroom. Bad news: I was known as “enrichee” by the kids in the neighborhood.
The rest of fifth, sixth, and seventh grade were spent in the program. Then my dad, who was first at HQMC and then sent to Chu Lai came back from the war and we were stationed in Marietta, Ga. for two years. He was posted to the Pentagon afterwards and we moved back into the house in Annandale for my last two years of high school.

My schools did not have things such as gifted programmes. My wife (who went to school in St. Louis) did.
When we were in Germany in 2015, our group toured a gifted school run by the government, which provided education tracked to the particular skills of the student. The headmistress of the school noted that there was considerable resistance when the school started some twenty years ago, but is now broadly supported by the community. Graduates from that school have entered into all sorts of technology, engineering, or science jobs.
Germany views such schools as a way to compete with other nations to advance their economy.

I’m not. No one is saying that Mueller is the good guy or that what we end up with is any better (Pence). Frankly, any investigation into the admin has to look at Pence and his involvement at every step too - what he knew and when he knew it, particularly in relation to Flynn, Manafort, Page, and Kushner and their lies/omissions about their contacts with the Russians and foreign agent status.

Paul Tibbets, the pilot of Enola Gay the plane that delivered the first bomb on Japan was a Columbus resident. After he retired from the Air Force he moved to Columbus to become part of Executive Jet Aviation, later to become NetJets. He was president of the company until he retired.
I came across this in his Wiki page and did not know of it prior, though I remember all the coverage of his death in the local media. It’s kind of sad and yet it shows the dichotomy of what dropping the first nuke bomb did to his life.

I found Seattle’s weather: It’s hiding here in the DFW area. I just drove through 25 miles of fog, some of it so thick visibility was less than 200 feet. And it didn’t end at either end of my drive.

Saw Dunkirk last night.
It was well-done but in a sense, a narrowly-told story: for example, there was nothing about the German approach and its ultimate delay that greatly enabled the rescue. There wasn’t any portrayal—except at the end—of Churchill or the nation’s political leadership.
But the story itself is quite a bit itself anyway without much of the context. The story is told through three parallel time shots involving 3-5 sub-plots. One subplot involves one of the small boats and its crew that embarks on its rescue mission across the channel. A second subplot involves the soldiers on the beach; a third centers around an RAF pilot (the Tom Hardy character) sent to fight off the Luftwaffe and protect the ships seeking to get the soldiers home. These three main plots are gradually brought together by the end of the film, partly through the usage of other characters and situations.

I think one reason the Republicans sort of got away with using the premiums rising under Obamacare as a scare tactic was most Americans get insurance through employers and never really looked at the costs. I guess they never understood why their co-pays and deductibles kept going up and up and their coverage (they never looked at) kept getting less and less.
But Obama, the scary man came and suddenly they paid attention to the details and now it was a problem. It left an imprint that insurance bad because Obama, when it was a mess before.

GOP lies also deflect attention from their own actions - like refusing to expand Medicaid, which would further stabilize costs.
The ACA expanded transparency to the system, so we know more about health costs than before - and the GOP is exploiting what we now know of health costs as a claim that it is broken and that ACA is to blame.
None of these lies are sustainable and are disproven, but they take more time.
So what we get is Trump promising during the campaign that he’d come up with a better plan than Obamacare that covers more and costs less, and then never does anything beyond the empty platitude. Congressional GOPers who had years to propose a plan are all like - where’s my vaporware/malware dude?! And lo and behold, the GOP produces crap sandwiches and shit on a stick and calls it Trumpcare v.x… It’s all the same nonsensical ravings from lunatics who don’t understand how the concept of insurance works.
They think that healthy people shouldn’t be subsidizing costs for everyone else, when that’s how all insurance works. It’s predicated on having a large enough pool of people to cover costs for payouts - whether it’s life insurance, car insurance, renter’s insurance, home insurance, or health insurance.
Every single GOPer from Ryan and McConnell on down either ignore how insurance works, or they don’t know (and don’t care).
It’s all so much bullshit that even Bullshit Mountain needs another mountain of bullshit to handle the flow.

tr*mp stupidly poured gasoline on a fire, and this is the result. North Korea has pretty much locked itself into firing missiles supposedly intended to land near Guam but not on it.
Just about any US administration would view this as sufficient provocation for a major strike on North Korea. A competent US administration would have a reasonable chance of preventing this from escalating into all-out war with China.
With the bozos we actually have in charge, escalation to Chinese involvement seems certain.
