Back when I was in High School, my mom would take in rescue cats. It was my job to get them used to being around people, which meant I would spend several weeks with a feral cat in a closed bedroom. During this time, I would teach them to use the litter box, the joys of fresh food and water, and with the help of a denim jacket and some garden gloves, that being touched by a human could be a good thing.

Third, I doubt they envisioned a nation with 330 million people living in it. The 1790 census counted about 3.9 million, which is about the population of the city of Los Angeles today. It is actually fairly amazing that we operate under mostly the same structure today as we did then

Taken as a whole, this tends to support an unfortunate conclusion I reached some time ago: These people are not stupid (as they are often accused of being); they are evil, morally deficient. They do exhibit great ignorance at times but, as with creationists, that ignorance is willful, the result of conscious choice.
If they really were stupid, actually lacking in intelligence or the opportunity to gain knowledge, one could forgive them or try to educate them. They are, instead, cruel and dishonest and they revel in the election of one of their own to the presidency. The GOP has, in effect, identified moral deficiency as a widespread characteristic in the general population and weaponized it into a voting bloc.
This is a very harsh reality, a hard pill to swallow, but it does seem more and more to be the truth. It is the real nature of the conflict in which we find ourselves, a conflict that we cannot afford to lose.

I’ve been asking people if they have read Neuromancer, especially since there is getting to be a push for a movie. I have found one person that has read it, and I work at an engineering company. It’s just surprising that one of the most influential sci-fi books still has so few readers.

I’ve read it, and I am not too surprised most people haven’t. It is a difficult and complicated read, and a lot of it is seriously outdated. It has that grim, dystopic feel that is very popular right now, though, so perhaps the movie will do well if they don’t try to follow the book too closely (they’d never have time anyway). I didn’t like it much, but I am not actually a fan of grim dystopia, so everyone should ignore me.

H. Beam Piper, is the Piper in question, some consider his works as being seminal in the concept of alternative history, mostly short stories, but some novels as well.

but, the point I was trying to make that the genre, while it has some general characteristics, the folks that are considered tent poles encompass a pretty damn big tent :-)

Most of the works I referenced are from the 50s thru the 70s, but nowadays, you’ve got everything from hard science based stalwarts like Niven and Pournelle to fledged space opera from Weber (with quite a bit of nerdy military based physics) to world building from Bujold (Vorkosigan saga) and dark epic fantasy from guys like Cook (The Black Company springs to mind), its still a thriving genre each group having a LOT of good storytellers.

They’re not standing up to Trump, they’re trying to handle him, and by extension his base.

This is where the press is letting us down. Their “read” of the situation is dramatic—one of resistance and defiance—but if you look at the words (and the votes) the GOP is desperately trying to keep Trumpism serviceable. They’re expressing distaste while still calculating use-value.

And what is especially not happening is any reaching across the aisle in a visible fashion…the axiom is still that anything to the left of them is axiomatically wicked.

Taking queer studies almost two decades ago…this has been is the background of LGBT issues for awhile.

For example, lesbian events and discussion that excluded trans women and slid into rhetoric from TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminism) were an issue back then. And gay men insistent on their masculinity—fighting gay = effeminate coding—didn’t necessarily feel a kinship with MTF or FTM people.

That article’s getting big pushback, and it’s very heartening, but unfortunately not everyone’s a perfect ally.

Reminds: Back in the 60s, British Leyland produced a commercial for the (iirc) MGB in which the car was parachuted from the back of a cargo plane and landed in the desert, where a James Bondish character in a tuxedo got in and drove away. In the first take, the parachutes reportedly failed and the car impacted like a bomb, leaving a fairly expensive crater. I think you’ve answered your own question right there. Unfortunately for President Obama, proposing entering into a big, far-reaching trade pact like the TPP was not what was going to sell in 2016. And even though it was not exclusively a US proposal, that made little difference to its opponents: lefties for the reasons outlined above, and rightward-leaners based mainly on the “job-sucking” aspects of the “Asian NAFTA” it was (mis?)characterized as. When the outlines of the pact became (rightly or wrongly) part of the political discourse, having to renegotiate the whole thing to remove all the objectional provisions was a non-starter: easier just to kill the whole thing .

The big thing, though, is they’re closer. They are in the position the US declared itself to be in the late 1800s/early 1900s with regard to South America.

That was one of the big goals of TPP, to create and strengthen ties between the US and Pacific countries to counter Chinese influence. Failure of that will not only allow China to become stronger in Asia, but Mexico and South America as well.

What do averages have to do with hiring practices at a company that famously hires fewer than one percent of applicants? In the name of the rational empiricism and quantitative rigor that the manifesto holds so dear, shouldn’t we insist that it only cite studies that specifically speak to the tails of the distribution — to the actual pool of women Google draws from?

For example, we could look to the percentage of women majoring in computer science at highly selective colleges and universities. Women currently make up about 30 percent of the computer science majors at Stanford University, one key source of Google’s elite workforce. Harvey Mudd College, another elite program, has seen its numbers grow steadily for many years, and is currently at about 50 percent women in their computer science department.

Yet Google’s workforce is just 19 percent female. So even if we imagine for a moment that the manifesto is correct and there is some biological ceiling on the percentage of women who will be suited to work at Google — less than 50 percent of their workforce — isn’t it the case that Google, and tech generally, is almost certainly not yet hitting that ceiling?

Well, if that “Obamacare stabilization bill” is truly “bipartisan” - then the threat of a Trump veto is pretty hollow. Assuming all Democrats will sign off on some sort of bill, and enough Republicans to marginalize the wingnut fringe, then the possibility of an override will loom pretty large.
But that’s just speculation: unfortunately, it’s a doubtful proposition that the wingnuts won’t be able to stand in the way of any bill that’s not going to be another TrumpCare horrorshow.

Oh, and despite Fox’s huffing and puffing about Senators’ supposed “fallout from opposing Trump” - it looks like the only ones who seem to looking at difficulty are the ones in already-marginal seats: hard to see a lot of them being shoved aside by Trump-cultists (Alabama, maybe, aside).

If everyone would just stop calling it Obamacare and tell Trump it was now The Make America Great Again Affordable Care Act, he’d probably okay it.

Just make sure when you go in to get him to sign the bill, you keep everyone else away that could suggest something different, You need that 10 minute window to lock him into the last good thing he heard about it.

Obama related to the name is really the only change the fat rat wants to make anyway. And allow him to say Obamacare is Repealed.

I know a guy that does t-shirts. He uses an ink jet with textile dye inks and just prints one shirt so he can photograph it and put it up on his web store(s). It allows him to do a proper photo. He also produces the first few orders with the ink jet. If the shirt looks to be a winner, he will then go to a production run.

It even will do a double pass of white on a black shirt and not look grey.

I used to silk screen T-shirts back in the ol’ art college hanging with bands days. It would have been something to have that tech then.

I have a bread box, but I also have a house and counter space to hold it. Functional nostalgia! I had to do some searching to find it — bought when I also had a big galumph of a Shepherd/Lab/Husky mix who could reach anything left on the counter or stove. He never figured out how to get the breadbox open, but I’ve yet to figure out how he managed to lick an entire stick of butter off a glass butter dish AND get the lid back on.

Bread doesn’t last long enough ‘round these parts to get moldy. Czechs eat a lot of bread. A one-kilo loaf will last the average family of three or four about five days or so, if that long.

China holds a lot of power here. Not only do they have far more competent leadership but they also have the American manufacturing sector by the balls.

China has already stepped into developing regions — Africa and SE Asia, mostly and now Latin America — that the USA has been ignoring for years. The Silk Road initiative will tie cooperating Asian nations literally and economically (through debt service) to China for decades. China has paid for new buildings in African countries and created new businesses which employ local workers, while gaining cheap access to Africa’s natural resources. Trump’s numbskulled “America First” isolationism will give China even more room to expand its influence throughout the world.

To be fair, China has somewhat of an advantage over American development aid: China has few requirements about environmental or occupational safety, and doesn’t ask questions about how nations deal with dissenters. It does, however, demand debt repayment on time. And China has a well known penchant for re-interpreting treaties and agreements in its favor. Take Hong Kong’s handover treaty, for example.

So, developing nations may welcome Chinese aid now, but down the line, they will wish they hadn’t.
