So we learned that none of Trump’s staff knew he was going to break out the “fire, fur(r)y, and frankly, power, the likes of which this world has never seen before”, line. They tried to walk it back, and today he doubled down.

I guess the Drumpf hasn’t read his history books (big surprise!).

First of all, Bernie, if you seriously buy the White House staff’s excuses that this is Trump trying to provoke action by China, you’re a moron.

And second, hand over that “peacenik” card, fucker, you just forfeited it (again).

I have an idea — let’s bomb North Korea with donuts. Once the people get a taste, they’ll overthrow the Kim regime just to get more.

Back when I was in High School, my mom would take in rescue cats. It was my job to get them used to being around people, which meant I would spend several weeks with a feral cat in a closed bedroom. During this time, I would teach them to use the litter box, the joys of fresh food and water, and with the help of a denim jacket and some garden gloves, that being touched by a human could be a good thing.

First, I’m fairly sure he was talking about Burr.

Second, our electoral system is quite different than what Hamilton and the other Framers had in mind. Hamilton argued that electors should be chosen at the district level and that they should not be bound to a particular candidate.

Third, I doubt they envisioned a nation with 330 million people living in it. The 1790 census counted about 3.9 million, which is about the population of the city of Los Angeles today. It is actually fairly amazing that we operate under mostly the same structure today as we did then

Pretty funny that one of the smoking guns was the “like” for Saul Alinsky on one of their fake Facebook pages, which is still more evidence of utter cluelessness.

Techno-libertarians: a weak link in democracy’s defence against authoritarians

And what’s happening to democracies in the digital age? Liberal democracies - the ones that demand free elections, independent courts, and promote the rule of law - have been stunned by how the technology can be turned against them by authoritarian nations.

“With the benefit of hindsight, it is now apparent that the democracies long failed to realise that a new era of competition was underway between autocratic and democratic states,” writes Christopher Walker of the National Endowment for Democracy.

Yet the attitude of a lot of thinking in the tech community remains adversarial to the governments which ultimately must protect them.

Taken as a whole, this tends to support an unfortunate conclusion I reached some time ago: These people are not stupid (as they are often accused of being); they are evil, morally deficient. They do exhibit great ignorance at times but, as with creationists, that ignorance is willful, the result of conscious choice.
If they really were stupid, actually lacking in intelligence or the opportunity to gain knowledge, one could forgive them or try to educate them. They are, instead, cruel and dishonest and they revel in the election of one of their own to the presidency. The GOP has, in effect, identified moral deficiency as a widespread characteristic in the general population and weaponized it into a voting bloc.
This is a very harsh reality, a hard pill to swallow, but it does seem more and more to be the truth. It is the real nature of the conflict in which we find ourselves, a conflict that we cannot afford to lose.

No one is smart enough to be President. The virtue is to be humble enough to be President, recognizing that the real job is to assemble and trust enough bright people to meet the challenges. Obama could do that, gathering the collective wisdom that was to be had.

Cemetery not putting its best foot forward?
Whole new meaning for “one foot in the grave?”
Where the Walking Dead finish their walks?
Decaying foot horrifies grieving family as they bury grandfather

Mourning gave way to the macabre at a New Jersey cemetery where a beloved grandfather’s burial uncovered a moldering bare foot from an adjoining grave.

The devastated family of Cleveland Butler, 85, received a second and unexpected jolt when the body part appeared from the dirt as his blue casket was lowered into the ground at Mount Holiness Memorial Park.

“This was a very traumatizing situation, first dealing with losing my father and then this,” daughter Sandra Butler told the Daily News.

“I couldn’t even look at it. It was too much and no one said anything to us. It was like business as usual for them. They just dumped the dirt in the plot like it was normal, like it’s nothing to them.”

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Trump’s doubling down on the fire and fury nonsensical ravings, now claiming that we’re 2 Fire and 2 Fury. Because nothing says you’re in control of a shit show like claiming your threat of nuclear annihilation isn’t sufficient to convey your threat. Killing isn’t good enough when you can overkill.

It gets even worse, when Trump goes and quotes Fox and Friends and then claims that the US is now locked and loaded and ready to deal with North Korea.

Ummm, the US has been ready to deal with North Korea since 1953. There’s a ceasefire, not a treaty. It has been a state of war all these decades, and the US has battle plans to deal with all kinds of contingencies to address the conflict on the Korean peninsula.

It’s almost as though Trump just realized that there’s this big building across the Potomac called the Pentagon. It’s got 5 sides. It’s yuge. And did you know that they do these things called plans and wargaming to identify scenarios that we can use to kill our enemies and hear the lamentations of the women? It’ll be great!

And not just, oh yeah we can be Twitter cool on inane stuff but on Russiagate he engages, as if they have any credibility.

I mostly enjoyed his takes over the months because he was an optimistic fighter with some specialized professional knowledge to create interesting and not batshit takes.

I’m frustrated with our country and angry at a lot of my fellow citizens and I guess his schtick is starting to irritate me. Was a long week. We saw nuclear war threats fly and voter suppression efforts move forward.

Good day all.
I like Tyler Rogoway. Gear head military nerd and excellent rant writer.

In reference to Trumps NK rhetoric and belligerence.
thedrive.com

What a stupid, short sighted, and downright reckless thing to say considering what’s at risk. In fact, using rhetoric like “fire and fury” make it sound like Trump and Kim deserve each other and it lowers the bar once again in regards to what’s expected from the historically steady hand and calming tone of the American Presidency. It’s tough guy talk for tough guy talk’s sake, and it plays right into the hand of Kim Jong Un’s paranoid notions, propaganda machine and adversarial view of the US and its allies. Above all else, it is trolling for escalation and for a response from the North Korean regime. And that is exactly what we got.

Why the hell would Donald Trump Jr. have in his possession a NSC brief? How did he get it, and why was he the one to send it along to Trump himself? This isn’t normal, especially when Junior isn’t part of the United States government in any capacity.

The problem isn’t that Trump was upset with the firing of the guy who wrote it. Well, that’s not the biggest problem. It’s that Trump’s upset with the crazies being fired and not those who are competent.

North Korea’s leadership got exactly what they needed at a time when their regime is under pressure because crop failures have once again occurred and they’re facing a famine. They again get to cast the US as the bogeyman and that the regime is acting to defend the country against the capitalist aggressors.

Trump’s bellicosity plays right into Jong Un’s hands and Trump thinks that this is brilliant.

Trump has only one position for everything he does. Reactionary extremist. If there’s a more extreme position, he takes it.

Issue threat of nuclear annihilation.
North Korea immediately responds by seeing the red line and jumping it with a threat against Guam.

Trump has no where else to go now that he’s already played the nuclear card. Once you’ve nuked the country into oblivion, there’s no where else you can go with the threat.

Trump tries anyways, by going 2 fire 2 fury(ious). This is the policy of a madman and a moron.

Of course, Trump supporters think this is all grand and that this will show North Korea (it isn’t).

Zedd points out the obvious. Trump makes threats but doesn’t back them up with anything. It’s all bluster all the time. He claims that the US is prepared, but no forces are in theater. No forces are even being pushed into the theater. No naval units are being activated or sent to the region beyond what is already in the region.

In other words, Trump’s bellicosity is an empty threat - and Jong Un knows this. He reads the papers. He sees everything Trump’s doing and Trump’s playbook is known to everyone because he’s a reactionary know-nothing.

No one who runs for President is humble. You have to have an inflated sense of self to think you can manage this job. OTOH, you can be both arrogant and have a mission to help others. You don’t have to be modest to be dedicated to making this country and this world a better place.

So, as I’ve been waiting for - China has spoken (more or less). Even though it’s not an official statement, which I’m still waiting to hear. Nonetheless, it gives me some idea of what they’re thinking.

China, North Korea’s most important ally and trading partner, has reiterated calls for calm during the current crisis. Beijing has expressed frustration with both Pyongyang’s repeated nuclear and missile tests and with behaviour from South Korea and the United States, such as military drills, that it sees as escalating tensions.

“China should also make clear that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten US soil first and the US retaliates, China will stay neutral,” the Global Times, which is widely read but does not represent government policy, said in an editorial.

“If the US and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so,” it said.

Preservatives are distributed through the vascular system. A clot, blockage, or even just compression of a vein or artery will mean tissue isn’t perfused. This must have been a very extreme case.

Pigmented preservatives are also used to contribute a “life-like” coloring, and obstructions or occlusions can result in multi-hued cadavers.

I also have an idea for the phone box scene, since rows of phones will probably not exist in the future:

Case walks through a crowd. For people carrying phones, he hears them ring as he passes. He also begins to hear his name as he walks by people answers, in statements like “No, I’m not Case, I think you have a wrong number.”

Not a bad idea, to be honest. It’d work.

Neuromancer is indeed a highly influential work; I admit, I’ve never read it myself.

Fucking brilliant:

Let’s pick booting transgenders from the military to try and curry favor with evangelicals and banning them going forward to “save $8 million in health costs” to try and curry favor with the fiscal conservatives.

What will that actually cost? Well, let’s see the cost of training replacements for all those folks? The costs of lawsuits, etc., and carry the zero.

Yeah, it’ll be nearly $1 billion dollars in added expense just to do what Trump wants.

His earliest stuff is OK - passable pulp. He didn’t really hit his stride until the mid-1920’s. The French novelist Michel Houellebecq described the story as the first of Lovecraft’s “great texts” and I’d tend to agree.

I’ve read it, and I am not too surprised most people haven’t. It is a difficult and complicated read, and a lot of it is seriously outdated. It has that grim, dystopic feel that is very popular right now, though, so perhaps the movie will do well if they don’t try to follow the book too closely (they’d never have time anyway). I didn’t like it much, but I am not actually a fan of grim dystopia, so everyone should ignore me.

H. Beam Piper, is the Piper in question, some consider his works as being seminal in the concept of alternative history, mostly short stories, but some novels as well.

but, the point I was trying to make that the genre, while it has some general characteristics, the folks that are considered tent poles encompass a pretty damn big tent :-)

Most of the works I referenced are from the 50s thru the 70s, but nowadays, you’ve got everything from hard science based stalwarts like Niven and Pournelle to fledged space opera from Weber (with quite a bit of nerdy military based physics) to world building from Bujold (Vorkosigan saga) and dark epic fantasy from guys like Cook (The Black Company springs to mind), its still a thriving genre each group having a LOT of good storytellers.

Mitch is doing head math about who’s putting money behind Trump, and the durability of that 20-someodd % fanbase. The GOP has built an internal political structure where Trump’s prideful ignorance and spouse-abuser greatest hits work even better than normal.

Step One was: share a conjugal bed with rabid weasels.
Step Two—assume the weasels will pull their weight in the relationship and accept personal boundaries—is not working out so great.

At this point it a shitheel-off: the institutional fuckery of McConnell versus the medicine tent fuckery of Trump.

Should we start the countdown to the firing of Callista-Bot from her cushy ambassador gig?

Gingrich joined a growing list of GOP elders to lend their sympathy to McConnell, the embattled political veteran with a frustratingly short list of accomplishments during the Trump presidency, perhaps due in part to the bombastic executive himself.

“Notice, as much as I admire the President, and as much as I think he’s handling North Korea well, I think he’s handling the Senate about equally badly,” Gingrich said, adding: “The president is on the field. You know? He’s not an owner sitting up in the box. He’s one of the players.”

Gingrich said Trump had erred in trying to achieve uniform support for the Obamacare repeal effort among Senate Republicans, rather than trying to pressure a couple of Democrats to support the bill.

“I disagree with this entire strategy, if it is a strategy,” he said, noting Trump would “do well to read Mitch McConnell’s book.”

Well, if that “Obamacare stabilization bill” is truly “bipartisan” - then the threat of a Trump veto is pretty hollow. Assuming all Democrats will sign off on some sort of bill, and enough Republicans to marginalize the wingnut fringe, then the possibility of an override will loom pretty large.
But that’s just speculation: unfortunately, it’s a doubtful proposition that the wingnuts won’t be able to stand in the way of any bill that’s not going to be another TrumpCare horrorshow.

Oh, and despite Fox’s huffing and puffing about Senators’ supposed “fallout from opposing Trump” - it looks like the only ones who seem to looking at difficulty are the ones in already-marginal seats: hard to see a lot of them being shoved aside by Trump-cultists (Alabama, maybe, aside).

Look at how hard Newt is trying to couch his criticism. Praising NK response, inserting a dig against Obama.

They’re not standing up to Trump, they’re trying to handle him, and by extension his base.

This is where the press is letting us down. Their “read” of the situation is dramatic—one of resistance and defiance—but if you look at the words (and the votes) the GOP is desperately trying to keep Trumpism serviceable. They’re expressing distaste while still calculating use-value.

And what is especially not happening is any reaching across the aisle in a visible fashion…the axiom is still that anything to the left of them is axiomatically wicked.

Even if they find a way to wrap up Trump—push him to quit or retire (and blame Democrats) things aren’t going to get better, because they’re locked in with a base that’s further radicalizing.

Taking queer studies almost two decades ago…this has been is the background of LGBT issues for awhile.

For example, lesbian events and discussion that excluded trans women and slid into rhetoric from TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminism) were an issue back then. And gay men insistent on their masculinity—fighting gay = effeminate coding—didn’t necessarily feel a kinship with MTF or FTM people.

That article’s getting big pushback, and it’s very heartening, but unfortunately not everyone’s a perfect ally.

Nobody understood what the TPP was, and Bernie and Trump sold the same reductionist image.

They accepted at face value that it was a failure because it didn’t bring “jobs” to the US…but that was never the point. The point was to keep existing agricultural jobs competitive and to pip other trade agreements that would further shut out US farmers.

Brings new meaning to the term “car bomb.”

Reminds: Back in the 60s, British Leyland produced a commercial for the (iirc) MGB in which the car was parachuted from the back of a cargo plane and landed in the desert, where a James Bondish character in a tuxedo got in and drove away. In the first take, the parachutes reportedly failed and the car impacted like a bomb, leaving a fairly expensive crater. To add insult to injury, the Federal Trade Commission forced the withdrawal of the ad, on the grounds that the car in the later, more successful, take was not truly ready to drive when it landed, since the battery had to be installed and petrol put in the tank before the pseudo-Bond could drive it away.

I think you’ve answered your own question right there. Unfortunately for President Obama, proposing entering into a big, far-reaching trade pact like the TPP was not what was going to sell in 2016. And even though it was not exclusively a US proposal, that made little difference to its opponents: lefties for the reasons outlined above, and rightward-leaners based mainly on the “job-sucking” aspects of the “Asian NAFTA” it was (mis?)characterized as. When the outlines of the pact became (rightly or wrongly) part of the political discourse, having to renegotiate the whole thing to remove all the objectional provisions was a non-starter: easier just to kill the whole thing .

Trump has decided that Mitch McConnell is his errand boy:

President Donald Trump laid out a path for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to get back in his good graces: replace Obamacare, overhaul the U.S. tax code and find a way to pay for big infrastructure improvements.

Oh, is that all? *eyeroll*

While Trump sits on his fat ass and watches Fox news, reads his ‘feel good about yourbadself’ briefing, tweeting nonsense about the stuff Fox mentioned in the morning, practice a few putts, eat funky crap food, watch ‘fake news’ at night so you can be good and pissed to start the next day off with bitchy crazy tweets before another round of Fox and Friends get the whole routine rolling again.

And he works so hard…no one will believe how hard he works. This I can tell you.

The big thing, though, is they’re closer. They are in the position the US declared itself to be in the late 1800s/early 1900s with regard to South America.

That was one of the big goals of TPP, to create and strengthen ties between the US and Pacific countries to counter Chinese influence. Failure of that will not only allow China to become stronger in Asia, but Mexico and South America as well.

No one who runs for President is humble. You have to have an inflated sense of self to think you can manage this job. OTOH, you can be both arrogant and have a mission to help others. You don’t have to be modest to be dedicated to making this country and this world a better place.

As the nuns taught us: “Humility is truth.” Anything else is false modesty.

Obama knew how smart he was, how smart he wasn’t, and how smart he had to be.

I’m a woman in computer science. Let me ladysplain the Google memo to you.
Updated by Cynthia Lee Aug 11, 2017, 10:20am EDT
vox.com

If, as the manifesto’s defenders claim, the population averages do not have anything to say about individual Googlers, who are all exceptional, then why is Google the subject of the manifesto’s arguments at all? What do averages have to do with hiring practices at a company that famously hires fewer than one percent of applicants? In the name of the rational empiricism and quantitative rigor that the manifesto holds so dear, shouldn’t we insist that it only cite studies that specifically speak to the tails of the distribution — to the actual pool of women Google draws from?

For example, we could look to the percentage of women majoring in computer science at highly selective colleges and universities. Women currently make up about 30 percent of the computer science majors at Stanford University, one key source of Google’s elite workforce. Harvey Mudd College, another elite program, has seen its numbers grow steadily for many years, and is currently at about 50 percent women in their computer science department.

Yet Google’s workforce is just 19 percent female. So even if we imagine for a moment that the manifesto is correct and there is some biological ceiling on the percentage of women who will be suited to work at Google — less than 50 percent of their workforce — isn’t it the case that Google, and tech generally, is almost certainly not yet hitting that ceiling?

re: #176 Jay C

If everyone would just stop calling it Obamacare and tell Trump it was now The Make America Great Again Affordable Care Act, he’d probably okay it.

Just make sure when you go in to get him to sign the bill, you keep everyone else away that could suggest something different, You need that 10 minute window to lock him into the last good thing he heard about it.

Obama related to the name is really the only change the fat rat wants to make anyway. And allow him to say Obamacare is Repealed.

I know a guy that does t-shirts. He uses an ink jet with textile dye inks and just prints one shirt so he can photograph it and put it up on his web store(s). It allows him to do a proper photo. He also produces the first few orders with the ink jet. If the shirt looks to be a winner, he will then go to a production run.

It even will do a double pass of white on a black shirt and not look grey.

I used to silk screen T-shirts back in the ol’ art college hanging with bands days. It would have been something to have that tech then.

I have a bread box, but I also have a house and counter space to hold it. Functional nostalgia! I had to do some searching to find it — bought when I also had a big galumph of a Shepherd/Lab/Husky mix who could reach anything left on the counter or stove. Bread doesn’t last long enough ‘round these parts to get moldy. Czechs eat a lot of bread. A one-kilo loaf will last the average family of three or four about five days or so, if that long.

Trump’s attorney general Jeff Sessions, while vehemently opposing marijuana legalization, also rejects the idea that medical marijuana could solve the opioid crisis.

Noted medical scientific researcher Jeff Sessions hasn’t observed its usefulness in this context.

re: #234 Eclectic Cyborg

China holds a lot of power here. Not only do they have far more competent leadership but they also have the American manufacturing sector by the balls.

China has already stepped into developing regions — Africa and SE Asia, mostly and now Latin America — that the USA has been ignoring for years. The Silk Road initiative will tie cooperating Asian nations literally and economically (through debt service) to China for decades. China has paid for new buildings in African countries and created new businesses which employ local workers, while gaining cheap access to Africa’s natural resources. Trump’s numbskulled “America First” isolationism will give China even more room to expand its influence throughout the world.

To be fair, China has somewhat of an advantage over American development aid: China has few requirements about environmental or occupational safety, and doesn’t ask questions about how nations deal with dissenters. It does, however, demand debt repayment on time. And China has a well known penchant for re-interpreting treaties and agreements in its favor. Take Hong Kong’s handover treaty, for example.

So, developing nations may welcome Chinese aid now, but down the line, they will wish they hadn’t.

Do they still make bread boxes? I remember years ago joking around with a friend who said they had bought me something and I asked “is it bigger than a bread box?”, and she had no idea what a bread box was.

We still have one. Roll top style.

Looks close to this one:

I just bought this bread box last winter when a mouse got at a loaf of bread that was on my kitchen counter (it chewed through the bag). I like it a lot.

I use my oven as a toaster to avoid the toaster oven taking up space!

I can’t imagine that a bread box really keeps bread fresh…?

Oh the things we discuss on LGF!

We keep the wrapper on ours even in the box.
